General :: Partitioning For Dual Boot OpenSUSE And Windows 7?
Jan 25, 2010I have a 2 year old Acer laptop running Windows 7 from a 160 GB HDD. This is currently divided into C:/ for Windows and D:/ for data with two small hidden partitions for Acer Utilities and Windows reinstall.
I ran OpenSUSE v11.2 from a LiveCD and decided I would like to dual boot it with W7. I downloaded the full 4.2 GB OpenSUSE Install DVD and ran that as recommended. All went well until I reached the Partitioning stage where the Intelligent Partitioner refused to offer any option other than delete all the Windows partitions and create a single extended partition for OpenSUSE.
It offers (without option):
Delete Windows /dev/sda2 70 GB impossible to resize (25 Gb are free under W7)
Delete Windows /dev/sda3 70 GB although 40 GB are free
Create Extended /dev/sda2 140 GB
Create swap /dev/sda5 2 GB even though I have 4 GB RAM
Create Root /dev/sda6 20 GB ext4
Create Home /dev/sda7 115 GB ext4
The whole HDD is currently formatted to NTFS as a factory default.
Is their a way to resize sda2 and/or sda3 to install OpenSUSE as their is lots of free space available for this installation?

There is a partition and it has 10 GB (Primary Partition) unlike C it is 100% free and another has 15 MB also free and it is called the EFI System Partition.So to dual boot, how should I prepare the partitions? Do I need make a new partition in what is now drive C?
Keeping at least 45 GB for Windows 7.I have ready to install, Ubuntu Netbook 10.10. Considering trying others as well, like Fedora, Mint or Ubuntu Netbook 10.04.2.
General :: Partitioning - Dual Boot Windows 7 And Slackware 13.0
Oct 13, 2009My current laptop (purchased off of a local computer store owner, I think it's brand is generic but it is called a SPARTAN for those that need to know) is running windows 7 professional and I am attempting to install Slackware 13.0. Now, I did the whole partitioning thing under windows (computer>manage>etc.) but for some reason whenever I boot the DVD to install it seems like it cannot read my hard drive. I then went directly into setup > target partition and I notice that it is reading my hard drive because my two partitions that windows exists on is there.
Now, what is says when I use cfdisk is that it seems to be reading the DVD and it gives me an error saying that the disk is read-only (which I see why). Is there a step I'm skipping while preparing the hard drive while under windows or is there just something wrong with my computer completely? I tried to read the readme and attempted to use fdisk but it's really confusing for me considering I have never used terminal type code before (except random DOS commands). I can get it installed in virtualbox but I just can't install it on the main computer. If it's worth mentioning, I downloaded the DVD ISO off of the website.

Oct 7, 2010We were trying to install w7 on a reserved partition. W7 did not like the partition (whatever we tried).
Since we had 3 hard-drives, on the allocated drive we deleted all partitions and set the partition table type new to MSDOS (yast etc.....).
W7 installed fine. We did not time it, but it appeared that 11.3 installs faster plus considering 11.3 installs quite a number of applications.
There are plenty of postings re integrating W7 to the Grub-menu.
This system went through several Suse updates, hardware upgrades, basically was all over the place.... we did a "new" install of 11.3 allocating its own hard-drive.
Install......fine, and Grub entered W7 to the menu. Worked ! Mounted the windows partition to /home/yourusername/windows
So, if you really (?) need W7 and have a spare hard-drive, this maybe is a clean solution.

Jan 9, 2011I successfully partitioned my desktop with Gparted and made it into an XP/Ubuntu dual boot.
Now i'm trying to do the same with my netbook (eee pc 1000he), and the existing partitions look funny:
How should I change this to prepare for installing Ubuntu? Can I just install to the unallocated space on the extended partition? I don't need optimal efficiency here, I just need to know where to install Ubuntu for a workable dual boot.
It's confusing to me that Windows is on an extended partition, and also that /dev/sda2 has the boot flag (this drive contains nothing but two undeletable folders titled "amd 64" and "i386"). This set-up is the result of a Windows re-install at a sketchy computer shop.

Oct 5, 2010I currently have Windows 7 installed on my laptop and I would like to dual boot w/ Fedora on the same hdd.I have two NTSF partitions, I shrunk my D drive 50GB for ext4 & swap.I've tried both liveusb-created & unetbootin to create a bootable USB to install Fedora.Anaconda starts up and I get through most of the install configuration, I set up GRUB & the partitions. Once I proceed to the next screen I get missing ISO image 9660 error My laptop doesn't have a DVD drive. It seems like a lot of people are getting this error, but I have found no concrete solution though.
How do I put the image on the drive? Windows can't read ext4 and I haven't been able to find a program that can.I have a USB to SATA adapter that I could hook up a DVD-ROM drive too, but I don't know if fedora will pick up on it.

sda1 Windows NTFS (primary-active and boot and system)
sda5 Linux Swap (logical)
sda6 Linux Ubuntu ext3 (root)
sda7 Linux Ubuntu ext3 (home)
sda2 other
I have Grub2 installed, which provides me the choice at boot to start either Ubuntu or XP. This currently works fine.
I want to clone this hhd and transfer to a new, larger hhd, and have several questions, since I don't want to make a mistake with something so crtical. 1) Which software is generally considered the safest, most reliable and easiest to use (dd, Gddrescue, Clonezilla, Paragon, Macrum Reflect, Easeus, Drive Image XML, or something else)?
2) Which software will be able to copy and include both operating systems in the partitions to be cloned?
3) Will that software change the booting process or options in the cloned copy in any way? I've read where using Easeus corrupts Grub2 and thus requires re-installing Grub2!
Are there any other concerns, considerations or factors I need to consider in cloning the hhd; e.g. prior formatting an external hhd, and with what file system? I've also read where FAT32 would be the choice, but don't really know for sure.

Sep 1, 2010I have ubuntu 10.4 installed in xp. Ubuntu tells me I have 50 gigs HD space yet the folder tells me I only have 700 mgs and I am getting a warning of not enough space on the computer. My question is. Is this due to windows claiming the space and not allowing enough to be used by ubuntu? If I delete windows and make this computer all linux will that help?

Oct 23, 2010I'm trying to create a dual-boot system, and have been following the instructions here. However my hard disk has bad sectors, and GParted won't let me resize the Windows partition. It tells me to use ntfsresize with --bad-sectors as an option, after having done some checks, all of which I've done. I've successfully shrunk the NTFS volume in this way -
when I boot into Windows, it says the hard drive is the size I set it at. However, the Ubuntu installer and Gparted still see the Windows partition taking up the entire hard drive. So, for the installation, do I have to set the size of the volumes manually, or is there a way to make Ubuntu see what ntfsresize has done?

Jul 28, 2011I was attempting dual boot my computer (ubuntu 11.04 and windows 7) and when I got to the stage to allocate drive space I accidentally formatted the largest partition of my hard drive to a linux swap. My computer froze while it was formatting the drive and I was forced to power off my laptop. Windows was my original operating system and was installed on the partition that is now formatted (or maybe not because of the crash during the formatting) as a linux swap. Therefore my windows no longer works and I cannot restore my computer for a backup because it wont let me restore it to the partition that is now a linux swap. Now when I boot from the linux install cd I get an error and am not able to install ubuntu or format/allocate drive space. Is there a way I can reformat and fix my harddrive so I can them restore windows.

Jan 22, 2011I have only known about Linux software for the past couple of weeks. I want to install Ubuntu 10.10 on an older desktop I have so I can become more familiar with it. I am average in knowladge about Windows OS and MS-DOS. I tried to install Ubuntu and I get an error message about the harddrive. The CD I am booting with will load on my other PC with Windows XP on it. I have only let it run on it long enough to verify that it is bootable.
I have made a floppy boot disc following the instructions on another Linux site about Ubuntu. I have also tried to boot my alternate PC with the floppy and it boots up. The harddrive on my working PC is a Maxtor 40gb formatted with NTFS file system. The harddrive in the older desktop is a Western Digital 80GB WD800LB-55DNA0.It worked fine with Windows XP on it. I also made a Western Digital DATA Lifeguard for DOS floppy and it boots with it.

Feb 23, 2010A few weeks back I was trying to install this (alongside windows 7) and no matter what I tried it would not install. I tried both 9.04 32 bit and 9.10 64 bit. Each screen (language, keyboard, etc) took about 20 minutes to load, and when I finally got to the install it always stopped at about 2/3 percent, giving some type of I/O error. No matter how many times i reburned and redownloaded. (old thread if you're curious)
I eventually gave up but then realized I had an old xbox hard drive hooked up that I cannot boot or read or do anything. It was set as hard drive 0 in windows hard drive manager or whatever. So I unplugged it. Now my windows drive is drive 0, and I have a second internal drive.
I finally got back to installing this. I avoided the graphical installer at first because it was so slow, opting for the alternate cd. It went fast but when I tried to partition it was unclear to me which disk i was partitioning. Doesnt matter because when i clicked ok, it froze at 0% for 30 minutes so i had to do a hard restart. Windows ran the disk check, etc, etc, I checked the disk management in windows and it was just a single windows partition as it should be.
So I tried the graphical cd again instead. It goes really fast through the screens now, HOWEVER it will not detect my drive 0 windows drive! Just my second internal drive which of course I can't install on without wiping the entire thing. I have installed kubuntu 9.04 dual booted with windows xp on this exact hard drive, over a year ago successfully, so I don't get it. What do i do??

Nov 23, 2010I just started working with Linux over the weekend. I do have a working dual booting system but it's not configured exactly how I want it to be. Currently Windows 7 Ultimate and Ubuntu are on the same hard drive but different partitions. The Windows boot screen comes up and I can select Windows or Ubuntu fine. Grub comes up when I select Ubuntu and I can successfully select any choice in the menu and it will run properly.
Everything works great now so you may wonder why I even want to keep tinkering, well, it's not working how I want it to. This is what I want it to do. I want Windows 7 on disk 0 and Ubuntu on disk 1. I want each OS to have it's own hard drive. I want Grub to be the only boot loader that comes up with the option to select Ubuntu or Windows. I want to skip the window's OS selection screen all together. I can modify Grub, I've already done some of that on my work computer.
I've been installing from windows. Should I use a CD instead? Would that accomplish my goals without doing anything special?

Feb 15, 2010It's pretty much as simple as that. I am simply wondering if anyone knows of a tutorial of some kind or can explain how to partition around, in order to exclude bad data blocks on a busted hard drive. This is on a computer I just set up to run Karmic Koala. On another forum someone mentioned that there is a way to do this, and that is the only way, to my knowledge to "fix" said hard drive.On a complete side note, does anyone know if an Intel 965 is supposed to work with Karmic out of the box, if you will? I haven't gotten a chance to check it specifically for this, and there seems to be no mention of this chipset with Karmic on these forums.
