View 4 Replies View RelatedI turned on my computer today (running Ubuntu 10.10) and it will go to the login screen where it shows the time at the bottom right and the restart and shutdown button, and also my computer name in the middle of the screen but it does not show my account name. My mouse and keyboard work fine there is just know where to login at. I'm still pretty new to ubuntu so I'm not to sure where to begin.

I'm running Maverick on an Acer AO521 netbook. I've got a k125 processor and an ATI Mobility Radeon HD 4200 series video card.Since upgrading to 10.10 with the new version of gnome my computer has started getting stuck on blank screen when booting the GUI. Not every time, but most times i boot.If I boot to command line through GRUB there's no problem. When I try to run gnome from the command line i get the same problem.

I reboot the computer by pressing the reset-button (ctl-alt-del doesn't work) and after reboot it flashes the update-tool processing a kernel-update. Then it flashes back to login screen and hangs. Another reboot I only get to login screen and it hangs. When booting into recovery mode, it hangs on

Computer hangs and sometimes won't reboot.
When it hangs I have seen this message a few times:

Also when the machine boots up I get a message saying something about IOMMU should be set in BIOS, but I can not find any such setting in BIOS. I do not know if this is related to the hanging.
I thought I had a hard drive problem at first so I tried a different hard drive. Same problem.
The mother board is an ASRock N68C-S.
One other thing, where is the file located that boot up messages are written to?
A few times a day my computer suddenly hangs. Often programs are not responding, or having strange behavior. I suspect the memory banks in my computer. This is what i caught on the SSH session from another computer.

I have a Dell desk top PC, running WinXP and Ubuntu 10.04 LTS with a Ge-Force FX 5200 video card. In trying to get both monitors to work properly I thought it would help to reinstall Nvidia binary X.Org driver V173. After I removed the driver I tried to restart the computer with Umbuntu, it hangs up at the Ubuntu logo. I can boot with the live disk, I also tried to reinstall the Nvidia driver But the machine still will not boot from the hard drive, it will boot into Win XP normally.hould I just reinstall Ubuntu or fix the problem I created? My skills working in Terminal are minimal

View 3 Replies View RelatedI installed Ubuntu in my PC alongside winXP. I downloaded the ISO and mounted it using a virtual image software (PowerISO used in winXP). I installed Ubuntu using wubi in a 20GB partition. During installation it asked me how much space should I give, I gave it 11gb. Everything went fine. I rebooted but now the computer hangs during startup. I went to verbose mode to see what the error is and found out that everything is ok. The last line that apears is "Setting sensors limit [OK]" and then nothing happens. I have tried every option (safe graphic mode/ demo mode etc etc) but the computer hangs.
View 1 Replies View RelatedI have spend way too much time on this and it still fails. I installed the debian 8.3.0 AMD64 CD1 iso image on an empty external USB 1TB Western digital My passport Ultra. I use the graphical install method and the installation process of Debian appears to go fine, except it informs me at one point I am missing some nonfree firmware for something with wifi, but that shouldn't relate to this.
*FYI I put GRUB on the external hdd, sdb in this case.
*windows 7 is on the internal hard drive and I excluded it from the boot sequence

I reboot my computer and it hangs with a flashing - in the upper right corner. Never even gets to GRUB. For awhile I thought I might have partitioned something wrong, but I am now convinced that isn't likely. I tried countless number of different partition configs. Separate /boot partition and I also tried using guided partitioning.
I mounted the partitions of the external hard drive using another OS and GRUB appears to be there. So it is there.
I know some Western digital hard drives have added priopertary firmware crap, so I tried installing on a external Seagate drive and it still hangs. I tried installing linux mint on the Western Digital drive and it works fine!
BIOS settings fine. USB settings fine. I tried booting via the boot menu and moving the USB HDD to the top of the list.
I also tried installing with Debian Live on a USB, but that actually has more problems for some reason. I can never get passed the partitioning phase because it fails to create /boot or /swap partitions saying something about how they are still in use and another thing about how the partition table hasn't been updated in the kernal yet.

I'm using Debian Stretch with Gnome and Cinnamon. My desktop computer sports an nvidia geforce 970 gpu (this may be relevant, and it is the reason I had to go with stretch.) I'm not a very experienced linux user but I get along fine.
I'm sharing my computer with my mom and whenever we have to switch users, the computer seems to shut down for 35 seconds: the screen doesn't receive signal anymore. After a new user is chosen, it takes another 35 seconds to get to her session. This is embarassing because my os runs on an ssd and everything else is nice and fast. At first I thought it may be a matter of us two not using the same window manager or not using the "default" window manager, but changing window managers didn't work.
Today I learned about the existence of /var/log/syslog and I decided to check what happened to it when I switched users. I can't post the whole log of what happens because it is too big, but I put it on pastebin : [URL] ....
I understand almost nothing of what is written here, but I saw some interesting things:
- after 35 seconds intervals where nothing is logged, there is a stall on cpu detected (lines 68, 500)
- my gpu seems to have something to do in all this
After some time (thirty second - a few minutes) computer hung (screen froze, I couldn't switch to console, only hard reset helped). From log message I suspected graphic card and I replaced it to some other based on PCI Express (GeForce 6200). It's better. Computer works fine during office work (OO, Firefox, ...), but after being a few minutes in 3D mode (e.g. game with graphics 3D) hangs in the same way.
The last messages in log are always code...
I performed a clean install of Fedora 15 from DVD and it goes fine until the end when the install program says to reboot the computer. Once I do that, the computer hangs before Grub loads, i.e. just after all of the BIOS messages, so there isn't any error message to indicate what is wrong. I had no issues with Fedora 14.
View 3 Replies View RelatedI installed on this laptop two OS : Windows XP SP3 with drivers for M11 from Toshiba download site Fedora 14 64 bits I have no problem running Windows but sometimes when I run Fedora I hear fan starting to run at full speed then computer hangs. When this occurs, I must power off it using switch then reboot and I lost my work. I try to run Memtest86 during a full night and I did not get any error or hang.
Is there somebody who already installed Fedora 14 on Toshiba Tecra M11? kernel is 2.6.35.10-74.fc14.x86_64 and my graphic card worked fine with hardware acceleration out of the box.

I just installed Ubuntu Lucid yesterday, and I'm dual-booting with Windows 7. (They're on separate physical drives if that's relevant.) I've discovered that whenever I restart the computer, it doesn't matter if it's from Windows or Ubuntu or just hitting the reset button, it hangs at "Loading Operating System." If I start it cold, though, it usually works fine. I tried Googling but I couldn't seem to find anybody else with this problem. I'm guessing it's a GRUB problem? Does anybody know how to fix it?

My PC is x64 compatible, although ubuntu will not install.
I don't get to any gui, it says ubuntu will continue install in 5 seconds, at 0, nothing happens. The CPU light is flashing, but nothing happens.
After about 10 minutes, it reboots, but when the HP splash screen shows (Before the boot selection screen) it just hangs. I have to do a hard shutdown to boot back up.
I am using wubi for install.
I chose a folder with 1.8 GB for syncing to the ubuntu one server. I have two questions:
1) ubuntuone-syncd has been using 99% cpu (at times) for two days now. Is this normal?
2) the syncing is EXTREMELY slow. I don't have any bandwidth limitations set and there seems to be very little data getting uploaded. Is this normal?
I hope somebody has a solution to this annoying situation: right after restart my system is very fast (at least for me), but after few days it slows down to the point when using it becomes a waste of time. As soon as I restart everything is OK. Usually I keep open 1-2 Open Office files, couple large PDFs, and some Firefox tabs at the same time, nothing special. No gaming/video on this rig, just basic internet and text processing. Here are my specs:

Am I wrong thinking that I have enough juice to keep these windows open? Maybe there is a way to tweak something?
My laptop running Ubuntu 10.10 had suddenly go to a dark gray screen that will not take any kind of input other than holding to power button down for 5 seconds. I'm not running any new or odd programs just Firefox, Openofice writer, and Pidgin. When I turn the computer back on I do not see any kind of an error message. I'm looking for any advice that will help me find the cause of the problem.
