ive been unable to use my computer for almost 3 days and I need it for work.
I installed linux to my xp computer.
I have one hard drive that is 500gb
its partioned to: 440gb {XP} + 60gb {Ubuntu}
Grub will not boot to xp it only boots into linux. i mostly use xp. and even if i wanted to change to ubuntu i only have 60gb of space to do so >.<
and a further notice... i dont want to change to JUST linux.
See this articleIt says that win 95/98 machines wont work for more than 49.7ys continously. my question is , following the lines of above article , does linux distros (ubuntu in particular) have any such issues ?
View 1 Replies View RelatedI turned on my computer today (running Ubuntu 10.10) and it will go to the login screen where it shows the time at the bottom right and the restart and shutdown button, and also my computer name in the middle of the screen but it does not show my account name. My mouse and keyboard work fine there is just know where to login at. I'm still pretty new to ubuntu so I'm not to sure where to begin.

I have been unable to open my Downloads folder for 2 days now. I've tried everything. I can get into every other folder on my machine though. I also have 103GB free space on my machine. Is there perhaps a limit on the amount of data I can have per folder? I'm running 64bit Ubuntu.
View 1 Replies View RelatedHave installed Ubuntu Lucid and I'm unable to restart the computer. Doesn't work using the power icon in the top right or using sudo reboot from the termial - I have to hit the reset button to get the computer going again. The problem is only related to restart - shutdown works as it should. When I try to reboot, the screen goes black aside from a narrow band of crimson on the far left of the screen; it freezes at that point. I've had a look through the var/log/messages and saw nothing that was an obvious problem, but then again it's not something I've ever had to look at before. Tried adding acpi=off as an option but that seemed to make no difference.
Not sure whether it's relevant, but specs are 3ghz Core 2 Duo; ATI 4850;4gb ram; Gigabyte motherboard with Intel p31 express chipset.
I'm trying to set up a simple computer that will be used to run an IRC bot only. All it needs is an active internet connection, some processing power and for Ubuntu 9.10 to install correctly.I've got all of those BUT the working install When I run the installer, I have to use Safe Graphics Mode to be able to get it through the setup screens (not much RAM). Everything is great, except for that when it starts up the partition manager during the install, it says it can't create a ext4 file system also, it says it has a problem with creating 2 other partitions and that Linux won't be able to detect changes until a restart.

I have them connected directly using 1394 to increase speed of large transfers. The internet network and 1394 have different IP address scemes. Internet 192.168... 1394 10.0.0...
I am having problems getting the two computers to communicate with each other. I can ping the server's ip address and and it loops back. Same with the XP's IP address. I can't ping each other.
ifconfig shows my eth0 and eth1 connections are up. The eth1 Link Encap says UNSPEC.(Don't know if that means anything.)
I am having trouble trying to use a 1.44 MB floppy drive on my computer. I have tried to mount the drive on my computer, but all I get is the following message:
Unable to mount location No media in the drive
One post mentioned that if I were to type "id" in a terminal, the floppy would be recognized as "25(floppy)". I tried that, but "25(floppy)" didn't come up.
Also, when I tried using KFloppy to format a floppy disk, I got the following message:
Internal error: device not clearly defined
However, when I used the 'lsmod' and "cat /etc/fstab" commands, they strangely seem to recognize that my computer has a floppy.
I am attaching documentation to this post for analysis. This documentation includes information about a failed attempt to format a disk using Disk Utility. Also, I am using Ubuntu 10.04 (Lucid Lynx) as my operating system.
I've just upgraded from 10.04 to 10.10 (32 bits). Everything seemed to be working great until I tried to hibernate; now it just goes into a blank screen and the "crescent" hibernation/suspend blinking LED on my Lenovo X200 just keeps blinking, and I had to force-shutdown the computer to turn it off. In short, hibernation doesn't work for me in 10.10. This didn't happen prior to the upgrade.

View 2 Replies View RelatedI did it the wubi.exe way this time and I installed ubuntu 10.04 64-bit on my brand new HP dual-core 64-bit with win7. I was super happy to see it install too, because I've definitely missed using ubuntu in the past few days while setting this computer up.
However upon reboot, I see the usual "choice" menu. I choose ubuntu... it then goes directly to grub menu. I click the generic (I also tried safemode too) and I then only get full screen of code with a blinking curser at the bottom. Nothing else happens so I eventually have tp hard shut down. I sure wish I could screenshot all of that code... it's way to much to type out though, sorry.
I already tried the i915.modeset=1 and the i915.modeset=0 after quiet splash tricks,because yes, I do have an Intel. It's a brand new computer though, I thought only older intel cards had thar problem?
I also tried a fresh install of 9.10, even 9.04 (with live cd's that I know work)... same thing. A screen full of code after clicking "Try without...."
every since i upgraded to 9.10 Karmic Koala i can no longer connect my camera or my camera phone to the computer to get my pics off..
View 2 Replies View RelatedDone a fresh install of Fedora 13 - it's the only os on the computer. Everything appeared to go well, but I'm unable to restart the computer. It gets to a point where it says restarting and just hangs there. Had a bit of a search through the forums and I see this was a problem for some people with earlier versions but haven't seen much mention past Fedora 10, and there doesn't seem to be a universal fix that's worked for everyone so not sure what I should be doing. There was some mention of the problem being related to nvidia drivers, but my video card is an ATI 4850 so that seems to rule that out as a possible cause. I've had several years using Linux (mostly Ubuntu and openSUSE) but hardly any experience with Fedora.

I recently setup motion on one of my computers with a USB camera. On that computer if I type [URL] I can see my live video. If however I type [URL] on that computer or any other on my wireless network, I get a page cannot be displayed. I checked that UFW was disabled and I am able to ping the motion computer from any other computer on my network. Also I am not sure if it matters but I do have apache installed on my motion computer as well. why I cant view my live video from different computers I am using Ubuntu 10.4 on all computers

I'm on asus G60Jx laptop with nvidia gts 360m. I'm not the only one to have this problem. It's my third message on this forum about this because no one answering me after 5 bump. I ask for help in ask ubuntu. I got "install ubuntu 10.04 and upgrade it, it don't take so much time" ok, I'll do that, but for 11.04, can I expect to be able to use the liveCD installation or I will install 10.04 to upgrade it after? I know that I can't change nothing for 10.10 but a bug is bug, and I wish that my computer will be more supported, thank to all. And this time, answering to me please and show me how can I report this. I know that I can use ubuntu-bug but I didn't found the fine section.
View 9 Replies View RelatedI've been running Fedora 10 in a computer with Asus motherboard,M2V, but I want to move the hard drive with Fedora 10 installed on to another computer with Asus motherboard,M2NPV. The reason I mention both motherboards by their name is because both of them are almost identical except for the boards.
When I try to boot Fedora 10 in the one with M2NPV, the boot process complains that it can't find the root file system.
The Fedora OS was installed on one hard drive with the following partitions:/boot partition LVM Volgroup partition swap partition.
It appears to me that the boot loader can't find /boot partition and thereby the initrd.img.
I tried to rebuild initrd.img, but the rescue disk could not find the installed OS.
I cant get cups to open on my computer http://localhost:631/ wont open for me either.
View 2 Replies View RelatedI have a server in my house with webmin and virtualmin installed et i made a mistake.Ive created a virual server and ive change the lan ip adresse. 192.168.2.30 ive change it for 192.168.2.31.Now of course nothing work. Im not able to connect via ssh via another computer.So, on the server i write ifconfig and it tell me the adresse is 127.0.0.1 and no more adresse like 192.168.x.x.
View 2 Replies View RelatedI wanted to create another panel on my computer. I created one, which formed directly above one that I already had (at the bottom of one of my two screens). Just out of curiosity I asked it to autohide. That was a big mistake. Now, I am unable to right click to remove or change the panel (the right click menu doesn't appear). This is true for all my panels. I thought logging out might fix it. No luck. Restart. No luck. Now my "top level" panel won't load, which means I don't have access to any of the main menus at all. Basically, the only think I can access at this point is what is on my desktop.

About 70% of the time, my computer is unable to find any wireless signals whatsoever, despite being right next to the router. When it does find the signal it connects fine and runs great, but most of the time it doesn't show any signals at all. I can't find any pattern to when it does or doesn't find the signal. My result for the "sudo lshw -C network"

unreachable computer's ifconfig reports xxx.xxx.xxx.37 but when I ping that address from another computer it says "Destination Host Unreachable" (all the other computers on the LAN can ping each other except this one particular computer)I can ping other computers from the unreachable computer just fine...
View 9 Replies View RelatedI went into Yast and disabled the SYSLOG service, ignoring the warning of which services would be affected, I went ahead anyway and stopped it. Sure enough, a handful of other services stopped as well.Now I have almost recovered the PC from this foolish mistake of mine, the only problem I seem to be stuck with is I am now unable to locate the computer on my LAN by hostname ... does anyone know which service I should restart please (if it helps, the computer can resolve DNS names such as Google.com OK)?

I noticed that I could no longer type anything into the search bar on Firefox without an error message appearing. So I thought it best to restart the computer then. When restarting, the loading screens took much longer than usual. The guitar pick shape that fills with white was stalling around the top. (I know, I love my complete comprehension of the problem too.) I pressed escape, and was given this message on a black screen.

This is as far as I can get. I press Esc again, and I see the completed fedora logo, but nothing else happens. I press Esc again, and I come back to the previous screen, and this time there are two of the above messages. My computer is fairly old (four years), so I understand if the hard drive is deteriorating. I would like to have use of my computer back, but at the very least I would like to recover some files that I have not backed up.
my computer hangs as soon as i boot into ubuntu 10.04 LTS GNOME. nothing works and i have to press the reset button.i don't face this issue with ubuntu 8.04 LTS. my comp works fine with linux mint 7 GNOME but it hangs when i try install mint 8. i have tried to work with windows xp. things seem to be alright. but not with latest ubuntu and its variations it just HANGS..I am on a mercury 945 series motherboard and i have 2 gb RAM.

I have Win XP SP2 installed on my machine. I wanted to try Ubuntu and i created a CD an and wanted to install the OS. The CD booted and i selected the option of "using The OS together and selecting which one to boot" or something similar to that. Ubuntu and changed MBR and installed itself. However on restarting I am getting Error 18. Now i am unable to use my computer at all.

I just moved into a new apartment and now connect via DHCP. Everything seems fine network-wise, except that when I'm at work I can't connect to the home box. (CentOS 5.3 x86_64) One thing I noticed is that I can't really determine my "true" IP address. What I mean is that it looks like my IP is 192.168.0.190, but when I use linuxdcpp, and enter a hub, I'm told my IP addr is actually something like 71.192.163.206. Here's some info:
