Ubuntu :: Removed The Driver Tried To Restart The Computer Hangs On Boot?
Jul 2, 2010
I have a Dell desk top PC, running WinXP and Ubuntu 10.04 LTS with a Ge-Force FX 5200 video card. In trying to get both monitors to work properly I thought it would help to reinstall Nvidia binary X.Org driver V173. After I removed the driver I tried to restart the computer with Umbuntu, it hangs up at the Ubuntu logo. I can boot with the live disk, I also tried to reinstall the Nvidia driver But the machine still will not boot from the hard drive, it will boot into Win XP normally.hould I just reinstall Ubuntu or fix the problem I created? My skills working in Terminal are minimal

I've been using ubuntu for a couple of years rather successfully on my dual-boot Vista/Ubuntu. It upgraded to 8.0(4?) LTS, 10.04LTS and I kept it there until this afternoon I followed the instructions on the ubuntu site to open up a terminal and update-manager --somearg to provide me with a nice little "Upgrade" button on the update manager. I clicked said button per the instructions, let it do it's downloading and whatever else it does. The last step of the installation is a system reboot. I let it do that, and then my grub menu comes up as more-or-less this:
Code:
Ubuntu 10.04 LTS, kernel 2.6.32-32-generic
Ubuntu 10.04 LTS, kernel 2.6.32-32-generic (recovery mode)
Ubuntu 10.04 LTS, kernel 2.6.24-28-generic
Ubuntu 10.04 LTS, kernel 2.6.24-28-generic (recovery mode)
Ubuntu 10.04 LTS, kernel 2.6.22-14-generic
Ubuntu 10.04 LTS, kernel 2.6.22-14-generic (recovery mode)
Ubuntu 10.04 LTS, memtest86+
Other operating systems:
Windows Vista/Longhorn (loader)
If I select the top one, I get:
Code:
Starting up ...
with a blinking cursor under the S for a LONG time (used the power switch after ~40 mins). I tried the second 2.6.32-32 option for recovery mode. It spit a bunch of gibberish to the screen for a couple seconds and then stopped, presumably doing the same thing, just with 100% more gibberish. I tried booting into Vista, that worked fine. Just to reiterate, I've not yet seen a 10 LTS login screen or desktop, and can't get one yet (just a "Starting up ...") Just to add, I did try searching, but since the only info I had to go on was 8 LTS to 10 LTS upgrade, and "Starting up ...", well those are just hard keywords to get any meaningful info.

I'm currently running Fedora 13, after I updated the kernel to 2.6.34, I have to run (as a superuser) "service NetworkManager start" in order to start my network manager, is there are way I can run this on startup?
Also my ethernet connection seems to only work when I restart/boot up my computer, when I wake my computer up from being asleep, the ethernet stops working.

I performed a clean install of Fedora 15 from DVD and it goes fine until the end when the install program says to reboot the computer. Once I do that, the computer hangs before Grub loads, i.e. just after all of the BIOS messages, so there isn't any error message to indicate what is wrong. I had no issues with Fedora 14.

When my system boots it hangs at
Code...
and hangs for another 120 seconds. In X11 I have no sound at all even after running alsaconf with no errors. My sound works perfectly in Ubuntu, so it's not a hardware problem. Are the two problems related or are they two separate things? Any help here would be hot.

After the updates about a week ago I noticed my system was hanging (screen and mouse frozen, unable to switch desktops, trl+Alt+SysRq+B still reboots) frequently. Though sometimes the system would not hang but become extremely sluggish and unresponsive. I've been able to determine that the problems occur whenever a module is added or removed. I can cause this problem with such commands as:
sudo modprobe aes
sudo rmmod raid0
I've tried multiple kernels but the problem persists. I've run memtest on the system but no errors have been found. I wonder if this could be some other sort of hardware problem but I'm suspicious that this began after a set of updates. I've seen message such as this in the kern.log:
Code:
Jun 25 22:35:48 localhost kernel: [ 240.480059] INFO: task modprobe:2672 blocked for more than 120 seconds.
Jun 25 22:35:48 localhost kernel: [ 240.492925] "echo 0 > /proc/sys/kernel/hung_task_timeout_secs" disables this message.
Jun 25 22:35:48 localhost kernel: [ 240.506918] modprobe D 00000000ffffffff 0 2672 2650 0x00000004
[code]....
I've tried using strace but that was not helpful. This is becoming a serious problem as I cannot load any encrypted volumes due to the inability to load the aes module. dpkg is currently in an interrupted state as the system hung when upgrading virtualbox-3.2 when it attempted to remove the modules. So my system is barely functional and I cannot see any way to fix things.

I've got a new Ubuntu 10.04 server install with a new 3 disk RAID 5. The boot disk is separate, not part of the RAID. I was trying to practice what I would do if a disk died to recover the RAID, so I unplugged one of the three disks. The machine now just hangs on startup. It shows fsck at the top of the screen but doesn't got anywhere from there. If you press a key it shows the Ubuntu splash screen. If I plug the disk back in, everything boots up normally. So, my question is, how do I get the machine to boot with one of the RAID members missing? I know I can recover it using the Live CD, but it would be nice to be able to get back into the machine without the CD.

I updated my server via SSH from another computer. I'm running Ubuntu 10.10 on my old laptop. I updated it at the 1/3. But now i experience problems! Since the update there where Radeon driver updates which made Ubuntu not to load X. [URL] You can see the update @ 1/3. The computer is a HP 6715s. As I can remember there is a Radeon X1250 in the computer. How can I get the old version working again without reinstalling?

This was working perfect and all of a sudden stops. Now when I try and start this service it simply hangs. I have searched and found a ton of reasons why this could be. No fix yet as worked.

I just upgraded my system's motherboard with an Asus M4N78 Pro and did a clean install of 9.10. The install seems to go fine but when it finishes and does the final restart I seems to get stuck at the place you'd normally see the GRUB menu. Instead all I see is a black screen with a flashing cursor in the left corner. This isn't just a long boot, its stuck. It never progresses past this point.
During the install everything seems fine. Video, network etc. I've tried several reburned CDs and I get the same result each time. For the record I've installed Ubuntu as a single partition an IDE drive. The bios is set to boot from that drive. ow the heck can I figure out what is happening? Is there a way to boot and display any and all messages displayed? Is this thing hanging in GRUB somewhere?

Completely new Gateway dx4850-45, installed 11.04 64 bit.
Symptoms:
- Both restart and shutdown hangs, have to hold the power button to kill it.
- Once the screen saver kicks in it hangs,
- Try to reinstall using 11.04 and 9.10 and they both hang. On the screen there is briefly some ascii text talking about "... found 2 index files ..."

I've just installed the new Fedora 11 (just released) through a Live CD having 3 partitions created:
"/boot" - ext3,
"/" - lvm (part 1)
swap - lvm (part 2)
now, I want to add my new Fedora system entry to my "central" lilo.conf, resident on another linux distribution. So, i've done
[Code]...
my lilo fedora entry boots fine but... at the middle of "after boot" loading the system hangs and stops the usual driver detection, etc (normally, it hangs on the CDROM detection or USB 2.0 camera detection).

Every time I reboot, cold boot, I come up with black screen. Vers 0.97 <grub> Minimal BASH-like line editing is supported. I have a SMB share being mounted during boot using a /etc/fstab entry. All that seems to work fine, but on shutdown or reboot I found that the system hangs for a variable period trying to unmount the share. It appears from the log that the unmount is happening after the network connections are closed. Is there someway around this, or is there some other way I should be mounting the share so that it is closes successfully at restart or shutdown?

I just recently purchased a DELL PowerEdge 2850 and have tried installing CentOS 5.4 on it. After the install completes and it does a first boot I get the following error on the DELL console: PROC 1ERROR, PROC 2ERROR E07F0. The monitor remains black and the system hangs. Just out of curiosity I installed Fedora 11 on it to see if it was a hardware problem. Fedora installed and booted no problem. I rebooted with Fedora installed several times and left it running for 24 hours. Everything is working great. Is there something I am missing in the CentOS 5.4 install?
Below is the Hardware Config:
Dell PowerEdge 2850
PERC 4eDi RAID Controller
8GB PC-5300 ECC Memory
2 Intel Xeon CPU Dual Core 2.8GHz 800FSB 4MB Cache - SL8MA
ATI Radeon 7000 Video Card

Have installed Ubuntu Lucid and I'm unable to restart the computer. Doesn't work using the power icon in the top right or using sudo reboot from the termial - I have to hit the reset button to get the computer going again. The problem is only related to restart - shutdown works as it should. When I try to reboot, the screen goes black aside from a narrow band of crimson on the far left of the screen; it freezes at that point. I've had a look through the var/log/messages and saw nothing that was an obvious problem, but then again it's not something I've ever had to look at before. Tried adding acpi=off as an option but that seemed to make no difference.
Not sure whether it's relevant, but specs are 3ghz Core 2 Duo; ATI 4850;4gb ram; Gigabyte motherboard with Intel p31 express chipset.

Have tried to install 10.04 from a cd sent to me by ubuntu. lts on an x-windows medion pc mt7 (med mt 345). Previously comp. was running windows xp pro. After pressing restart at end of install process I get nothing! Black screen, no mouse control , no keyboard control, nothing at all.
Have tried putting cd in again but get nothing, on pressing restart the cd was politely ejected. Have tried rebooting a few times but get no response. Everything is switched on. So now I cannot even get a terminal up, the only thing I am fairly certain about is that the computer is sending a signal to the screen as there is Not a "no signal" message.

this explanation could take a paragraph or two. I have 7 hard drives in my system. One is a 250GB PATA I use for the Ubuntu install, 3 are 1.5TB SATA Seagates and the other 3 are 1TB SATA Seagates. I have had to replace 4 drives (one of them is the same drive twice) in order to get 6 that actually work well. That's a 40% failure rate. Most of the failed within a week or so of putting them in.
Through all of that I have learned a few things and now have them configured as follows. I have all six of them Raid5 with 1TB partitions. And then the 3 extra 500GB partitions I put as Raid 5 also. Seems weird, but it saves 1TB of space instead of having 3 1.5TB RAID5 and 3 1TB RAID5.I then use LVM to make it all one big 6TB drive. Yummy, lots of space.
Here's the problem I have had the last couple of times I restart the computer the 6X1TB RAID does not start up, or I should say it has all the drives as spares (the 3X500GB RAID starts fine). I have to use --force to get the raid to load, and all 6 load fine. I believe it says something about having to write something to two of the drives (I believe it is something about the superblock) to make them the same. I'm sorry I did not catch the message. Is that enough information for someone to tell me why it does this? It's done it twice now, when I reboot the computer.

I have a fresh install of Ubuntu 10.10 on a home server. I can connect to it using vinagre from another computer just fine. However, if I restart the server I can no longer vnc to it because I need to log in (start a gnome session). Is there a way to do this using just vinagre? Do I need to install another vnc server on my home server? The problem is that I don't want to carry a monitor from another room just so I can log in and start a gdm session if the home server gets restarted.

I have a slight problem. I think it is corrupted file(s).
My Debian Testing KDE is not functioning properly. When I Leave and click Restart Computer, the computer does not go to a reboot but goes to the KDE login screen. When I cold boot the computer and click Restart Computer from the KDE login window, the same thing happens, the login window reappears.
When I choose Turn Off Computer, the computer properly powers down.
It looks like I should re-install something but what that something is I don't know. I checked the boot and dmesg logs. Nothing leaps of the screen at me but I have to admit that I am not 100% sure what I am looking for.

Done a fresh install of Fedora 13 - it's the only os on the computer. Everything appeared to go well, but I'm unable to restart the computer. It gets to a point where it says restarting and just hangs there. Had a bit of a search through the forums and I see this was a problem for some people with earlier versions but haven't seen much mention past Fedora 10, and there doesn't seem to be a universal fix that's worked for everyone so not sure what I should be doing. There was some mention of the problem being related to nvidia drivers, but my video card is an ATI 4850 so that seems to rule that out as a possible cause. I've had several years using Linux (mostly Ubuntu and openSUSE) but hardly any experience with Fedora.

I was trying to point /bin/sh at /bin/bash but got the symbolic link the wrong way and wiped bash, so tried to reinstall it but apt gave me problems. So I tried rebooting, but it fails to with errors like this:
init: Failed to spawn plymouth main process: unable to execute: no such file or directory
I'm pretty sure this is related to the lack of /bin/sh
So how can I tinker with the grub boot arguments and give it /bin/dash or something instead? I'm running 10.10 in a VM (Parallels) so don't have access to the filesystem from elsewhere (as far as I know)
