CentOS 5 :: Account Password Changes Unexpectedly Once Every Few Days

May 5, 2009

I'm running 5.2, mostly updated. I've got a user account that is really only used by some clients (Polycom phones) to log into vsftpd. Once every few days or so, the password on the account changes to something other than what I've specified, and I can't figure out why. The other user accounts on the system don't seem to be affected, though none of the other accounts are used by/for vsftpd.

chage shows that the account password should never expire, so I don't think that's what's happening. I'm wondering if VSFTPD is just not playing nicely with PAM. Is there a way to explicitly prevent vsftp from changing a user password? I can't seem to find anything like this.I'm not sure if this makes any difference, but the system is clustered using heartbeat/drbd. The users are unique to each of the nodes in the cluster, though, so I don't think this should really have any effect.

CentOS 5 :: IP Configuration Lost After Reboot / Get That Back?

Sep 16, 2009

Google brought me no love on this one, tried searching here with little luck as well. So I'm hoping somebody vastly more experienced than I can shed some light on my plight.

The situation:
I have a CentOS 5.3 x64 server running the latest cPanel which works fantastic. I issued a graceful reboot and the server came back up (according to the DC) just fine to a login prompt. Apparently the system lost all of its IP address configuration. Primary IP, secondary IP's gateway, you name it and it was gone. Now my secondary IP's were showing in cPanel after I had the DC re-enter my main IP address/gateway. But listed as not active due to the fact that they were not anywhere to be attached to the interface. i.e. eth0:1 eth0:2 etc and so on.

I have no idea where to begin looking for this problem and am afraid to reboot it again (at least until I get my lantronix spider up there). I've never experienced this with any of my other CentOS/cPanel servers either. All similar configurations CentOS 5.3 x64, latest cPanel as well. My hardware is all Supermicro gear as well and has been solid in the past.

Maybe I'm just missing something, granted I've only been managing Linux based servers for about two years now. This is actually the first real problem I've ran into on any Linux distro, they are normally pretty solid. So I assume it's a configuration error on my part somewhere.

CentOS 5 :: Bind-chroot Missing / Get That Back?

Dec 15, 2010

I have been a BSD guy for years, but I am now shifting over to CentOS for my first server build.

So far so good, all has been relatively painless and in fact a heck of a lot simpler than I anticipated!

Everything seems to have gone ok except a small problem with Bind. At some point during setup, I accidentally ran "yum remove bind-chroot".

When I tried to run "yum install bind-chroot" I got told "No package bind-chroot available" which was odd.

Anyway, I managed to find the rpm for bind-chroot and installed it that way. Now I see that there is a bind update available

Unfortunately the rpm I installed now has a dependency for the current version of bind which I can see being a headache everytime bind needs updating.

So, can anyone help me get back bind-chroot the proper way? code...

CentOS 5 :: Setup APC Back-UPS ES 350 On KDE Server Machine?

Jun 3, 2011

installing my APC Back-UPS ES 350. I am using CentOS 5 KDE setup as a DNS Resolving Caching Name Server, I wanted increase speeds and privacy since I got a letter and didn't like that not one bit, a tv show but whatever. It is very secure now, using peerblock with Iblock List subscribed to for the one year and it is so secure that I have to disable peerblock if I want to use online banking and what not.

setup the APC unit, haven't experienced APC and CentOS is new to me, I didn't want to buy a windows server, so I used BIND instead and well I love CentOS, can't wait to really understand it a lot better, also logging into root is so nice and easy vs Ubuntu, very cool.

I also do not have a DD-WRT supported router nor a Docsis 3 modem, docsis 2, I believe this should give me a lot more speed. currently I just get 11-17Mbps, I am hoping this will bump me back up to 35-37Mbps which I get off and on but unstable.

CentOS 5 :: How To Get Back Regular GUI Interface For Desktop

Jun 28, 2011

I am some LinuxUNIX history but still consider my self a newbie.I know Microsoft OS well and am more comfortable with that but willing to learn Linux as well.I have a CentOS 5.5 Server I am using to Host over 18 other sites with a PERL / Web based application. The application and hosting are still working but since the CentOS updates I ran this morning my Session (I think that is the correct word) will only load a black desktop with the top menu bar only having the terminal icon and the bottom having a desktop icon; whereas prior to this update the default CentOS blue backdrop with white flower pattern and Applications, Places, System with the terminal icon and other icons displayed and the clock was off to the right.I think this is the Gnome GUI?

Also On Friday 6-24-11 I added a device line to the /etc/fstab so that my CD/DVD device would load up at boat time. I would not think this to be causing the problem. Please advise me on how to get back my regular GUI interface for this Desktop.

Red Hat / Fedora :: Revert Back To CentOS Default Yum RPM Repositories?

Aug 5, 2009

A while back I had to install an extra yum rpm repository to my CentOS 5 server as I needed newer versions of httpd (v2.2. and php (v5.1.6) than were in the default repositories at the time.

I now wish to revert back to the standard repositories, I have removed reference to the custom repository from etc/yum.repos.d/ and used '# yum clean all' but cannot seem update these packages when I use '# yum update'.

Is there a way of making the rpm packages for httpd and php go back to using the standard repos, or will I have to manual update them from now on?

Or could I uninstall those rpms and reinstall from default repo without breaking the whole server?

CentOS 5 :: Best Way To Back Up And Restore Installation 'profiles' For Given Serve

Dec 15, 2009

We're trying out a few backup strategies and I had a question pertaining to CentOS installations. I was trying to think of the best way to back up and restore installation 'profiles' for a given server. In terms of a basic backup strategy.I currently back up the /etc, /var, /usr and /home directories with an rsync-based script, which has been working nicely so far.I also have a script which does a yum list installed on a certain configured server. It then 'diffs' this against the output from a base install of CentOS. The point of this is to figure out the packages installed for this server 'profile' so I can restore them.

Ideally, it would be nice if there were a way to generate kickstart files in reverse for a given server config. I was wondering what the best way to do this would be. Currently, I'm concerned enough about failures that I'm imaging stuff using Mondo Rescue.
