Fedora Hardware :: Toshiba Tecra M11 - Overheat - Hear Fan Starting To Run At Full Speed Then Computer Hangs

Jan 3, 2011

I installed on this laptop two OS : Windows XP SP3 with drivers for M11 from Toshiba download site Fedora 14 64 bits I have no problem running Windows but sometimes when I run Fedora I hear fan starting to run at full speed then computer hangs. When this occurs, I must power off it using switch then reboot and I lost my work. I try to run Memtest86 during a full night and I did not get any error or hang.

Is there somebody who already installed Fedora 14 on Toshiba Tecra M11? kernel is 2.6.35.10-74.fc14.x86_64 and my graphic card worked fine with hardware acceleration out of the box.

Ubuntu Installation :: On Clean Install Of 10.04 Thunderbird 3 Hangs On Laptop Toshiba Tecra S1?

May 16, 2010

I have a problem with Thunderbird 3 on Ubuntu 10.04. When starting TB3 the 'mail account setup' box appears but can't type anything inthere... I can close the setup box... the main window is very unresponsive but cosing works also immediately. I fisrst did upgrade from 9.10 to 10.04 having the problem. Thinking the upgrade might have gone wrong I did a complete fresh install on that laptop, even verified the CD with md5sum before installing. After the fresh and clean install the problem remains the same.

The machine having the problem is a Toshiba laptop Tecra S1 with 1GB of RAM. I do not experience any other problem with Ubuntu 10.04 on that machine, everything else runs like a charm, there also was no error during installation... I think this problem is related to the Toshiba Tecra S1 laptop because other machines I own don't have problems with TB3.

Ubuntu Multimedia :: Extra Screen On Toshiba Tecra M3

Oct 8, 2010

I have a Toshiba Tecra M3 laptop with a resolution of 1024 X 768 and a Nvidia GeForce Go 6600 TE/6200 TE graphics adapter build in, on to which I want to add an external Dell E196FP monitor with a resolution of 1280 X 1024 pixels. I have installed the Nvidia VIDIA UNIX x86 Kernel Module 173.14.22 driver and X server application, but when I go in to the application by "System" -> "Monitors" I get the following message: "It appears that your graphics driver does not support the necessary extensions to use this tool. Do you want to use your graphics driver vendor's tool instead?", to which I answer yes.

In here, I go to "X Server display configuration", and "Detect displays". Here both displays (the Dell and the build-in Toshiba) is shown, but I do not know what setting to chose under "Configure", where I have 3 options:Disabled Separate X screen TwinView I want the same screen image on both displays - almost like a projector, but I can for the life of me not get it to work.

CentOS 5 Hardware :: 5.3 Fails To Install On Toshiba Tecra

Oct 17, 2009

Not new to CentOS, which I've installed on a few servers. I'm trying to turn a very old laptop (11 years ?), Toshiba Tecra 540cdt (with the latest available BIOS), into a home server. It runs Windows 2000 fine, and was earlier running some Mandriva versions. I'm trying a multi-boot install, from CD1of6. It does boot from the CD, then shows:
boot:
Loading vmlinuz...
Loading initrd.img...
then reboots, and goes through the same cycle.
I switched the hard disk, same result. I have problems too if I try to install the latest Knoppix. An older Knoppix, 5.1 with kernel 2.6.19, will boot.

Hardware :: Toshiba Tecra S2 Laptop - Symptoms Always Show After Pressing A Key

Apr 21, 2011

It feels like it is a keyboard problem because the symptoms always show after pressing a key.

In most instances, a line I am typing in "gedit" at the correct place in the text is unexpectedly continued a few lines downward even though no arrow key has been pressed. In another instance, I click "new thread" in Linuxquestions, a new window opens asking for a title, after entering the title I click "Click Here to Find Similar Threads", a new smaller window opens on top of the existing one and shows the existing options but as soon as I select (click on) one of these options, the main Linuxquestions window disappears and there is no option of "going back" to it and no "back" button to click.

If the keyboard needs cleaning, how do I do that? I found a few cleaning hints about separate keyboards but nothing about laptops.

General :: Toshiba Tecra M2S With NVIDIA GeForce FX Go5200 Driving Dell External Monitor Quits Working

Mar 29, 2010

I've been trying to get it to work on my laptop off and on for several years now, experimenting first with Redhat (version 6.1, I think) and now trying with Ubuntu 9.04. I've done a full install using the entire hard drive (no dual boot). So I'm trying it for real this time. I'm having a problem with my video drivers. The video is ok (not great) and I don't seem to have any options to adjust it.

When I go into system > preferences > display, I see monitor "unknown", set at 1024x768 with a 75 Hz refresh. If I click on "detect monitors" nothing happens. It says under system > administration > hardware drivers that "no proprietary drivers are in use on this system". I've got two options:

[code]...

For the first part of boot, I have access, but then when it comes up into Ubuntu, the big monitor (a Dell 2500, I think, plugged into the stock Toshiba docking station via DVI) quits working, and all I have is a dim picture (dark, like something's sapping power from it) on the laptop display.....

Fedora Installation :: GPU (Radeon 5750) Running At 69C Idle And Fan At Full Speed

Aug 19, 2011

I'm fairly new to fedora. I used Fedora 14 on a virtual machine just to mess around with it a little while back but thats about it. As far as linux goes, I just test a bunch but can never seem to pull myself away from windows. I am hoping this is the time but these issues are the weirdest I've seen on any linux distro ever. My GPU (Radeon 5750) is running at 69C idle and the fan is at full speed. I am not overclocking it at all and I'm using the default drivers that came with fedora. It works just fine in windows and a lot cooler. How can I fix this?

I'm running the Gnome 3 desktop version, which I am also getting some graphics artifacts. In the bottom bar I get a dashed white line that comes up every time I boot and goes away when I make the bar expand. Also in the applications window I get the same dashed line at the top of the window and sometimes the top of the scroll bar. So far I really like Gnome 3 (Idk why everyone is whining about it) and I'd like to stick with Fedora, and linux for that matter

Red Hat / Fedora :: FC13 Hangs On Starting Atd?

Nov 4, 2010

I did a fresh FC13 install on a computer and after trying to install the nvidia drivers the machine hangs on starting atd when it boots.Initially, I tried to install the nvidia drivers with yum but it didn't work. The nvidia module was not loading and although I blakclisted the nouveua driver the machine was still picking it up. Anyway after spending a lot of time trying to find a solution online, I decided to download the drivers from nvidia and install it myself. So I did that, run sh <nvidia-package>.run and the installation was completed without any complaints. Since then the machine hangs when I booted it up. Also I don't see any errors in var/log/messages or in /Xorg.0.logHere is my grub.conf:

Fedora :: Upgraded To FC14 From FC12 - System Fan Blows Full Speed Constantly?

Dec 31, 2010

I upgraded from FC12 to FC14 and now the system/case fan blows full speed constantly. I also moved from i386-PAE to am64.

The CPUs are cool, the machine is basically idle, and the fan noise is really annoying (and blowing cool air).

In FC12 the fan would auto-adjust with CPU load. This is not the case now.

I ran sensors-detect and it doesn't seem to find my fans:

[root@pangea modprobe.d]# sensors

acpitz-virtual-0
Adapter: Virtual device
temp1: +40.0C (crit = +75.0C)
k8temp-pci-00c3
Adapter: PCI adapter
code....

I don't remember ever having to even run sensors-detect in FC12. I searched the board for a bit and didn't see any solutions. I'll attach the full output from sensors-detect.

Fedora Hardware :: Full Speed USB MSC Device Detected As Input Device?

Apr 7, 2011

I am working on an embedded system, which is an USB MSC device that supports some vendor specific scsi commands. I am using FC10 laptop as USB host for testing, and it runs some small apps based on sg3. All has been well for ~ a week. The FC10 laptop is able to communicate with the device and retrieve data. Suddenly, starting from today, the laptop is not able to properly detect the device. When plugged-in, the MSC device is detected as input device (I thought). This is observed from "dmesg" output and changes in "/dev/input/".The device under development is running at full speed. When I connect to winXP, no problem. A windows file explorer pops up, showing the content of the drive. Also, the FC10 has no problem with other USB flash drive (high speed).

Ubuntu Installation :: 9.04 Ok But 10.04 Hangs On Toshiba Sat M200

Aug 23, 2010

I should also say that I am a Hardware person primarily, and while I have had a little bit of a 'play' with ubuntu in the past, I am still very much a begginer, so please try to keep suggestions to a noob level of instruction.

I have a little Toshiba Satellite M200 which came with VISTA (ugggh!) Needless to say Vista has fallen over its own huge feet and landed in a scrambled pile. I have mnaged to copy off all data I needed, and then tossed up between XP or Ubuntu for the re-install. I decided to go with Ubuntu to try and get used to it on a single machine before (hopefully) changing over the rest of the computers here to eventually be M$ free.

I booted the M200 from a Live-CD of 9.04 which I already had from a while back and it ran fine. Ok, looks good so far. I then checked for the latest version and downloaded/burned the live-cd of 10.04 which also ran fine on the M200 when I booted it. I istalled 10.04 from the live-cd but after the initial reboot (and all boot attempts since then) the computer hung while still loading (before it reached the GUI) and had a corrupted screen, lines, coloured blocks etc.....

I wiped 10.04 and installed 9.04 instead just to get it up and running. The 9.04 install went fine, it rebooted and still worked so I did all the updates it wanted to, then rebooted, everything was still fine. After the reboot it offered to upgrade to 9.10, so I did that, then rebooted. It all seemed fine while booting, and made it all the way into the GUI, but now the touchpad no longer worked. I plugged in a USB mouse and that worked, but I could find no way to get the touchpad working again. In the end I blew-away 9.10 and again reinstalled 9.04 and did the updates, but stopped before upgrading to 9.10.

This is the state of the M200 at this stage, running stable on 9.04, although the wireless network sems to keep dropping out for some reason and not reconnecting.

I would like to try to get 10.04 up and running as I really like the look of it (love the loading screen), the new communications arrangement for IMs etc, and seriously, whats the point of installing an older version of an OS when you actually prefer the latest one?

why 10.4 would run fine from the live-cd but fall over when its installed? I was thinking it could be display drivers or something, that only get configured and set up on a full installation, but I have no idea how to work around this.

On a side note, I booted a desktop from the 10.04 disk and it all seems happy except that it wont go above 800x600 screen res, would this be solved with a full installation where it can then set up display drivers properly etc?

Ubuntu Installation :: Boot Hangs After 10.4 Upgrade From 9.10 On Toshiba Laptop?

Sep 12, 2010

I just used Update Manager to upgrade to 10.4 and all I get is the Ubuntu logo screen with the dots and then the screen goes black and there's no other response. This happened after the upgrade completed installing and I received the message to restart the computer. I have never been able to get it to boot.

I can boot fine by selecting the next older kernal although I do get some messages that I don't understand. It all works so I presume it's OK. The kernal that was installed with the upgrade is 2.6.32-24-generic and I've seen other posts about boot problems with it. The laptop is dual boot with Windows XP and Windows boots normally. I saw a suggestion on another thread about booting into an older kernal and then issuing the sudo update-intramfs -u -k command. I tried it and it didn't help.

Next I tried 2.6.32-24-generic recovery mode and I tried the option to fix damaged packages. It seemed to do something although I saw error messages about not being able to find various software sources. I tried a normal boot afterwards and same problem. Recovery mode has another menu option about repairing grub but I don't want to try that. I'm not a power user and this is all over my head. Before I turn the laptop into an unusable door stop,
