One DVD+R that I made from a download plays perfectly on my computer's player. Yet, every time that I insert it into my stand alone player connected to my TV, it stutters and stops repeatedly.If the disc were dirty, it should misbehave in my computer as well, no? View 1 RepliesI was setting up my Totem Movie Player on Ubuntu 9.10 and at first it wouldn't play dvds at all. So, I went online and entered these two commands into the terminal to play restricted dvds.
sudo apt-get install libdvdread4
sudo /usr/share/doc/libdvdread4/install-css.sh
DVDs will now play on Totem, but now I don't have any video. I can hear sound and if click around the screen I can get it to play but I still don't have any video. I also tried both dvd drives on my computer and tried different DVDs. Still same thing.
I have a Creative Zen Mozaic player, which appears as a USB drive. I've got Ubuntu 10.04 installed.Ripping the MP3s with Sound Juicer is no problem, but my MP3 player doesn't recognize artist or album names, putting it under "Unknown artist" and "Unknown album". The song names appear correct, but the songs are in the wrong order. In the Sound Juicer interface, the album title and artist are correctly detected and displayed.
I assume this is an ID3 tag problem. I could get the process working perfectly with Grip earlier when using Mandriva, but now I'm on Ubuntu and Grip isn't in the repository. I tried with RipperX, which appears to do the correct thing, but seems to crash, and only sets the correct tags for the first few songs (for this particular CD).The mp3 setup in Sound Juicer is as follows: audio/x-raw-int,rate=44100,channels=2 ! lame name=enc mode=0 vbr-quality=6 ! id3v2mux
I installed Ubuntu to a flash drive and it worked all dandy like. However, on other computers the audio doesn't work, neither can I install a driver for the graphics card to use effects and (at least so it seems to me) run 3D games. Is it trying to use the same hardware that it did on the first computer I used and therefore hasn't installed the right stuff?
EDIT: I can 'play' music, so I think the codecs are fine, but no audio comes out, so I'm thinking it must be a driver problem.
EDIT2: Apologies, I checked the "Comprehensive sound problems solution guide" and was able to fix the audio simply by unmuting the speakers. However, the graphics problem remains.
One other tid bit that might be relevant is that the first time I booted up on a different computer it did tell me (in different wording) that the graphics might have trouble because it was set up for a different hardware system, so I told it to set up a new configuration and that seemed all dandy.
Tried kungfu ripper, is supposed to rip dvd's to theora. Great. Program hangs and stops. This is from Packman repo, not factory.

Also, it shows up under "$lsusb", but when I tried using gnomad2 and kzenexplorer, they couldn't find any jukeboxes. Also, rhythmbox doesn't show any players.

View 2 Replies View RelatedI installed VLC on F11 and it worked but after i updated F11, the video was smooth but the audio from VLC seems to have screwed up. I went to ..... and tried some vids, nothing's wrong and F11 still plays the usual system sounds. I have deleted and reinstalled VLC but to no avail. Unforunately, i did not know what i updated as there were just too many updates and i just acepted them all, maybe i shld not do that next time
View 3 Replies View RelatedI'm using Debian Stretch with Gnome and Cinnamon. My desktop computer sports an nvidia geforce 970 gpu (this may be relevant, and it is the reason I had to go with stretch.) I'm not a very experienced linux user but I get along fine.
I'm sharing my computer with my mom and whenever we have to switch users, the computer seems to shut down for 35 seconds: the screen doesn't receive signal anymore. After a new user is chosen, it takes another 35 seconds to get to her session. This is embarassing because my os runs on an ssd and everything else is nice and fast. At first I thought it may be a matter of us two not using the same window manager or not using the "default" window manager, but changing window managers didn't work.
Today I learned about the existence of /var/log/syslog and I decided to check what happened to it when I switched users. I can't post the whole log of what happens because it is too big, but I put it on pastebin : [URL] ....
I understand almost nothing of what is written here, but I saw some interesting things:
- after 35 seconds intervals where nothing is logged, there is a stall on cpu detected (lines 68, 500)
- my gpu seems to have something to do in all this

View 1 Replies View RelatedI don't know if anyone else sees this, but I get some odd behaviour when using VMware Player sometimes (Ubuntu 10.10, VMware Player 3.1.2 build-301548, dual monitors).My screen locks after 5 minutes of inactivity. I run a Windows XP VM under VMware player occasionally for certain things and that has a screen-lock time of 15 minutes or so. When running the Windows VM in full-screen on one of my two monitors (not tried it on a lower res), if I place the mouse cursor on the XP VM screen and leave it for > 5 minutes, the screen does not appear to lock. I can come back to the machine and still interact with the Windows XP machine and do what I like. If I move the mouse cursor outside the bounds of the XP VM screen, then the whole screen goes black and presents me with the password prompt to unlock the machine
View 1 Replies View RelatedI have a home movie that is currently in Video_TS format (.bup/.vob files). I burned the movie using K3b and it works awesome in both Ubuntu and on my DVD player with the television. BUT the thing will not play in XP! I understand this is because XP is the work of the devil, but that is not important. The disc shows 4Gb used (in XP) but only gives the title. I even made sure hidden files were visible, just in case somehow the movie was invisible. I have tried burning my DVD directly from the video_ts files in K3b, and first making an .iso file, then going over to XP to burn the DVD using Nero...annnnnd same thing. I can watch them on the TV and 'buntu but not XP.
What have I done wrong? Advice? Need more info? invariably someone wants to ask the irrelevant question "Why do you need to watch it in Windows?"
I just started with kubuntu 10.04 and first of all let me say I love it! I came from debian lenny with kde so a lot of it is similar. There is one problem: my microphone plays through my computer speakers but I can't record it or use skype with it (I mainly want to use skype). So first question is how do I stop it playing through the speakers and how do I use it with skype?
View 3 Replies View RelatedI am using a 64 bit version of Ubuntu 10.04 on my Dell Studio. Sometimes my computer stops responding. I wouldn't say completely frozen, kinda semi-freeze. I am able to see the mouse pointer move and also when I move the mouse pointer over the Maximize, Minimize or Close buttons, the buttons get highlighted but I am unable to click on them. Alt+Tab key combination to move to another window doesn't work either. I experienced the same problem when using Ubuntu 9.10 64 bit for which reason I dumped Ubuntu then.
View 2 Replies View RelatedIn Hardy Heron, after installing xine and the usual stuff, and setting xine as the default dvd player in /etc/gnome/defaults.list in the usual way, and also linking /dev/dvd to /dev/dvd2, when I pop in a commercial dvd for autoplay, or select xine from the context menu to play it, it starts to play fine, but also produces the "source can't be read" messagebox, which goes away after being OK-clicked 10 (exactly!!) times.Launching xine directly from the application menu does not produce this problem.
View 1 Replies View Relatedwhen i play a song in banshee, or a videos video, i get no sound at all. however, in banshee 1 3 minute song will appear to play in about 20 seconds (the progress bar speeds along), and videos videos play back in ultra-fast motion with no sound. weirdly, when i go to system settings -> multimedia, and click test on the default sound device, the kde login sound plays back fine. this worked when i first installed; does anyone know what's going on here? i think it may be a problem with gstreamer?
View 1 Replies View RelatedI have an odd problem with a copied DVD. I started with a commercial DVD and created an ISO file. The ISO file plays perfectly with VLC. I take the ISO file and burn it to a DVD+RDL without error. The burned DVD will not properly play on my computer or DVD player. It loads, but the menu is jerky and full of video block artifacts. The menu does not function properly. I tried this more than once with different software, including going directly to the DVD. I am using a drive that worked before, with the same stack of DVD+Rs that I used before.
Here is where it gets interesting: I can take the non-working burned DVD and copy it to a new ISO file. The new ISO file works fine with VLC. Obviously the data is getting properly copied from the source DVD, and it must be good on the burned DVD, but it won't play properly.
When I mouse over a wav file What plays it in 8.10?
I'm trying to write a small script that I can have another program run automatically.
All I want the script to do is play a short .wav file on the system speaker just as it does when I mouse over it.
I Used Mplayer on my old system but I reloaded with 8.10 and I don't want to upgrade because I'm running zoneminder and the version I like is not in the repos for the latest versions of Ubuntu. And The repo is dead for 8.10 so I cant easily install mplayer.
Due to the problem with the upgrade killing xp partitions, I reformatted my drives and am trying to install 10.04. However, after choosing install ubuntu or try ubuntu without changes, my monitor stops getting input from my computer. If I click the try ubuntu, I hear the start up noise on my speakers, but I see nothing.

I've tried walking myself through all the sound help threads, but I am not having any luck. Sound was fine a few days ago. But now I get nothing. I uninstalled and then reinstalled both alsa and pulseaudio... and their respective mixers bounce around like they recognize sound is being made, but nothing comes out of the speakers. sound does work in windows so the speakers aren't blown. nothing is muted to my knowledge... alsa and pulse mixers are not on mute. output is set to Internal Audio and not HDMI stereo, though I never know which profile to be using.. i've pretty much tried them all to no avail. results of aplay -l

My partner is a teacher and has downloaded some videos from a teacher's resource site but can't seem to play them in Ubuntu. They play fine in Windows XP using Windows Media Player but they only play a few seconds in VLC or Totem and then freeze. The files in question seem to be normal MPG (MPEG-1) video files but somehow VLC and Totem choke on them. I have installed all restricted video formats including w32codecs but still no joy. My partner is threatening to go back to Windows!
View 2 Replies View RelatedI recently switched my usb external soundcard from an M-Audio Fast Track Pro to an Edirol UA-25EX (i can get 24bit working on it - that's why). After making the switch, all audio programs are working just fine except for Audacious. When i try to play audio, i get 00:00 and no playing. The output plugin is ALSA and the audio device is UA-25EX. I don't understand why it's not playing the audio.
View 4 Replies View Relatedso yeah i've seen threads on getting flash installed, and it appears to be installed. videos videos play and all that jazz. you got to adobe's webpage and it says i have the latest released version installed.
problem is i can't click on any of the buttons in the videos. like in ..... i can't click pause, change the video resolution, or move the bar to fast forward or rewind. i'm kind of at a loss cause it is installed, and reinstalling doesn't do anything in ff. i mean if i uninstall videos don't play, and if i reinstall they play. still can't click on anything though. edit:also it does work just in ..... if i get the new interface. it won't work in the old interface.

I'm on Kubuntu 9.10, using Totem to play .wmv files, and certain of them cause the player to search for an audio codec (wmap?) that is never found. The video played without audio after that. So I followed advice to remove ~/.gstreamer-0.10, and reboot. A new .gstreamer-0.10 directory appeared, but now, Totem will not even play the video. It recognizes the audio codec however. The video codec shows up as "Windows Media..." but resolution is 0 x 0, and nothing ever appears in the window. I tried uninstalling and re-installing w32codecs and non-free-codecs, and removing the registry files under ~/gstreamer-0.10 and using gst-inspect to rebuild the database,
but nothing helps.
When I try to play a divx movie online using firefox (my system is ubuntu 8.04) the movie plays but there is no sound.
View 1 Replies View RelatedSo i just got a sansa fuze and it works great with ubuntu lucid. the fuze however only plays mp4 videos. i have a video thats in avi and im trying to convert it to mp4 and came across fuzemux in the software center which is supposed to do just that. my problem is that is says in synaptic and the software center that its installed. but its nowhere to be found.

I tyred to to go threw the player and see if I changed the settings some how.I even tried other players. I had been watching ..... videos earlier, it was a little choppy video but colours were fine, then I think loaded the flash players and after that the colour went to negative.
