I'm running natty server on Rackspace cloud and rsyslogd has been using 197% off my cpu (quad core I believe) for the past few days. Does anyone have an pointers as to how to figure out what is going on?

Ubuntu Servers :: Change Rsyslogd Destination "on The Fly"?

I have a web service that needs to change to destination of rsyslogd on the fly. I have tried this in a bash script and it does not work.

pidrsyslogd='pidof -x rsyslogd'
sudo kill $pidrsyslod
rsyslogd -4 -l $LOGFILEURL

I get the error that rsyslogd is "already running"; as soon as I kill it in the second line it restarts.

My macbook is backed up using timemachine on a samba drive. I used this hack for months [URL]his tuto is based on Netatalk, but works perfectly with Samba (or used to), as described in many others blogs.A couple of days ago, I had a strange message from timemachine, like the backup should be reconstructed to improve the security. The sparsebundle has been deleted, and timemachine try to create a new one now. This step failsI tried to create manually a new sparsebundle, using the tuto. It does not work.I have a backup of the sparsebundle ... I can navigate into it ("enter timemachine"), but I cannot backup anymore.

I just finished setting up my small server, however I realized that no one can connect to it from the outside. The reason being is that my router is assigning internal ip's and dyndns is linked to that. I need port 80 for the Apache server, but if I have the router forward that port to my particular ip, won't it screw with everyone else's internet too?

Software :: Iptables - Unable To Log To Rsyslogd

I am using iptables and what i want to do is have is log to a specific file that i have set for it. Here is what i edited to rsyslog.conf

#kern.* /dev/console
:msg, contains, "iptables" /var/log/iptables
& ~

now as far as iptables rules here is what i am working with...

iptables -A INPUT -i eth0 -p tcp --tcp-flags ALL NONE -m limit --limit 5/m --limit-burst 7 -j LOG --log-level 4 --log-prefix "iptables"

however when i run my script i get this kind of output:

iptables v1.4.9: unknown option `--log-level'

Try `iptables -h' or 'iptables --help' for more information. when i do 'iptables -L -n' i get this kind of output..

Server :: Rsyslogd Doesn't Seem To Listen On All Interfaces

I'm running ubuntu 9.10, the box has 2 network interfaces. I've got rsyslogd running on this box also. On one of the interfaces I have a VoIP ATA which I've configured to send syslog messages to the ubuntu box, however they're not coming up in the log file (I've configured syslogd.conf to capture logs for local2.debug and local3.debug).

rsyslogd seems to be working ok for data coming through on the other interface, but not this one. I've verified the ATA is sending data by using tcpdump and have confirmed it's using local2.debug and local3.debug. It seems perhaps it might not be listening on all interfaces? rsyslog is running with the -c4 switch.

I chose a folder with 1.8 GB for syncing to the ubuntu one server. I have two questions:

1) ubuntuone-syncd has been using 99% cpu (at times) for two days now. Is this normal?

2) the syncing is EXTREMELY slow. I don't have any bandwidth limitations set and there seems to be very little data getting uploaded. Is this normal?

Ubuntu :: Performance Slows Down After 2-3 Days?

I hope somebody has a solution to this annoying situation: right after restart my system is very fast (at least for me), but after few days it slows down to the point when using it becomes a waste of time. As soon as I restart everything is OK. Usually I keep open 1-2 Open Office files, couple large PDFs, and some Firefox tabs at the same time, nothing special. No gaming/video on this rig, just basic internet and text processing. Here are my specs:

9.10 Karmic
Kernel Linux 2.6.31-22-generic
GNOME 2.28.1
Memory: 433.1 MiB
Processor: AMD Athlon 64 3200+

Am I wrong thinking that I have enough juice to keep these windows open? Maybe there is a way to tweak something?

ive been unable to use my computer for almost 3 days and I need it for work.

I installed linux to my xp computer.

I have one hard drive that is 500gb

its partioned to: 440gb {XP} + 60gb {Ubuntu}

Grub will not boot to xp it only boots into linux. i mostly use xp. and even if i wanted to change to ubuntu i only have 60gb of space to do so >.<

and a further notice... i dont want to change to JUST linux.

I turned on my computer today (running Ubuntu 10.10) and it will go to the login screen where it shows the time at the bottom right and the restart and shutdown button, and also my computer name in the middle of the screen but it does not show my account name. My laptop running Ubuntu 10.10 had suddenly go to a dark gray screen that will not take any kind of input other than holding to power button down for 5 seconds. I had uninstalled pulseaudio and it's related libraries, then I rebooted, and now I can't log in.

Also, the log in screen looks different. Where it used to have the ubuntu logo, it now has a computer monitor icon.

I upgraded to Mythbuntu 9.10 from 8.10 and things went fairly well. No major problems during the upgrade. The system is just a mythbackend server. The only things that access it are for myth and for the smb mounts for mythtv. Every couple days, the system stops responding to network traffic. No myth connection, no smb, no pings even. All I have to do is wiggle the mouse on the system and everything comes back up instantly. I noticed that after it comes back up, the time is off by hours.

I need to move files to a backup drive if they are over 30 days old. All I could find, when looking for scripts, were ways to sort files by date and the solutions were all over the place and nothing seemed simple or good.

I've thought of building my own running "ls -al > filelist.txt" type of approach and then processing the file, but not sure that is best way. An array would be much easier and eliminate the file, but never done an array in bash.

I installed Ubuntu 9.10 recently using the installer (which was awesome, I've wanted to install Ubuntu again for awhile now but I didn't have any usable CDs and that wasn't available before or I was blind). I'm dual-booting with Vista 32 bit and it was working fine as far as I could tell for a week or two... but I noticed a few days ago, when I would try to boot into Ubuntu, once I selected 'Ubuntu' and then got to the screen where I'd normally ENTER on the 'linux-blahblahblah' thing, it's a command line. I can't get much out of it because half of the first word or so is too far to the left of the screen, I'm unable to read it.

I don't have the time to figure out what I'd search for for a fix for this. I'm only just now getting around to seeing if it would do it again today.

I have been using Ubuntu 9.10 for about two months now and it became my primary OS. I was in a hurry last night so I powered off laptop in a "bad way" - pressing the off button while the computer was running wipe. Today I tried to start Ubuntu but I can't get past the login screen which, also, looks like it switched to a "simple" theme - like in Windows xp when you turn off theme and GUI switches to "simple" theme. On this same screen there is a message saying something like "Configuration error! Power manager configuration isn't configured correctly." in the upper right corner. f I enter my username and pass it just resets to login screen again after a few seconds.

I just used the update manager to update to the latest kernel. There were other updates there, but I can't remember what all they were.

Now the computer won't get beyond the splash screen. I waited about 15 minutes the first time for it to load. When I hit esc during the splash screen, I got this warning

After that I think there is more, but my screen runs out of room, but I have this sense that there is more.

Anyway, that might have nothing to do with the problem. When I boot to recovery mode it finds all the stuff plugged in to the motherboard and USB drives then just stops.

Booting to the old kernel works just fine.

I'm running Ubuntu on my desktop. I have a dual-boot option between Ubuntu and Windows Vista. When I woke up this morning, my Ubuntu screen was frozen so I attempted to reboot...but I couldn't get past the boot screen. I can get into Windows just fine, but selecting Ubuntu just keeps cycling me through the initial boot screens over and overI am a still a beginner so please talk to me as though I were a child. Otherwise I'm sure I'll be confused.
