Ubuntu :: Compiz: Ditch Title Bar And Keep Borders
Dec 17, 2010
I really hate having a title bar so I went into CCSM and under effects-->Window Decorations found the decorations rule and set to none....
Works great, have new key short cuts for everything I need...
However, I do need the window borders back...
can't find any compiz code anywhere....wiki was worthless..

I have searched around but did not find anything similar, so I make a new post. I have installed Mac4Lin icons, theme and font, and I am using Emerald (with "emerald --replace" command in the window manager of compiz) and everythin is fine.
Some few times (every 4~5 days), when I start the system, it opens up as the title, like Emerald is not starting or something. If I logoff and then logon again, it is fine. Not that is a serious problem... just annoying in case you want to demonstrate the "power of the system" in an important meeting and it shows up like that.

I installed ubuntu 10.04 and after installing the drivers for my graphic card ATI Mobility Radeon HD4570, windows borders do not appear anymore. When I type "metacity --replace" borders come back, but I can't use compiz, also when I try to disable "Window Decoration" from the compizConfig Settings it doesn't work, it keeps always enabled. I tried this hack here [URL] but it didn't work for me (or I didn't apply it correctly, I'm new to the system).

I have recently upgraded to 11.04 and everything works except for compiz and emerald, every time I enable compiz to be the window manager the borders either do not work or they do not appear. I switched the window manager to metacity and now the borders work but I can not get any effects at all. Also emerald never replaced the window borders either.

We've all probably had this issue at one time or another.Window borders disappearing when Compiz is enabled. I'm on 10.04 with Intel GMA 4500M graphics. I would say about 30% of the time when I boot up the computer, I have no window borders. I use the Compiz Fusion icon just for this purpose, to reload the window manager and get back the window borders.Of course, the other 70% of the time the computer boots up with normal window borders. Is there a more permanent solution someone can provide than manually reloading the window manager on an as-needed basis?

I had installed compiz and emerald when I was using Fedora 9, upgraded to 10 (compiz and emerald still working at this stage) tho when I upgraded to 11 compiz and emerald seem to have crashed (i upgraded using preupgrade both times, maybe this might be a bit of a problem...) Since upgrading to 11, neither compiz or emerald would work. Ive tried reinstalling both compiz and emerald, and even erasing them both, restarting and then installing (both times thru yum).
This has brought back compiz and the effects (I can use AWN, desktops on a cube etc) but there is no window borders (cant move, resize etc). Ive tried different window managers (emerald, gtk and even kde4 has been installed..) and tried reloading the window mangers thru the fusion icon. Nothing seems to work, unless I stop compiz from running at startup (but then I lose all the desktop 'candy'). Searching the net has brought up a couple of options (Under CCSM):
- Check the box "Windows Decorations" and under its properties write emerald --replace (or whatever WM)
- Check the box "Place windows"
but none of these seem to work either.

I've been using Slackware for about five years but I've never been bothered about compiz so it's all a bit new to me. Since I installed Slackware 13 (64bit) yesterday I noticed that compiz is one of the pre-installed packages so I thought I'd give it a blast.
I should probably have done a bit more research but I read on a forum that running "compiz --replace" will replace the default window manager with compiz so I gave it a try. The problem is that now none of my windows have borders so I can't move them or do anything. The worst part about the whole affair is that I can't even figure out how to revert to whatever the old window manager was.
EDIT : Just thought I'd add that I'm using XFCE.
EDIT++ : I've managed to revert the window manager by deleting my .cache directory. XFCE obviously maintainted the apps that were running and one of them was compiz. Now just to figure out how I can get compiz working. I presume emerald is the key...

I created a 2nd login that I set up with Gnome instead of Unity. Unity has a few things that drive me nuts like no notification area among other things. I want to still be able to access Unity to try to get used to it, but will probably use gnome mainly.Anyway, I like using the compiz desktop cube effect (also something I could not do in Unity). When I activated it, all my title bars (the top bar in most all windows) vanished. I have seen this before, but the normal fixes aren't working.
This is one thing that still bugs me about Linux/Ubuntu. A couple clicks and you just hose your desktop/ computer. It is not that easy to screw up a windows machine. It isn't even as if I clicked on something wrong. Is there a something about 11.04 that causes a bigger problem with compiz?

I just got F12 and installed it on a new hard drive on my Dell Inspiron 1501. I have an AMD 64 x2 and an ATI Express 200M video card. I installed CompizConfig setting manager, which did nothing. I then installed Compiz Fusion Icon. This makes compiz work but once I start it all of my windows are missing the title bar. I'm noob and not a programmer but pretty good and figuring things out.In Emerald Theme Manager I can view available themes select them, edit them, etc. There seems to be no way to apply them. Am I missing something or is it just not working?

I recently upgraded the motherboard/processor on my computer (as in quadrupled the processor and octupled the ram). The new board has a built in GPU (intel) and from searching the forums, I think this is part of the problem. Every time I boot up the computer, I need to open the Compiz icon and use it to reload the window manager before I see any title bars, borders, etc. 've tried the .bashrc hack (metacity --replace), but that doesn't do anything. In fact, whenever I open the terminal, I need to have two tabs open in order to use it, and when I close it all the borders go away again (even when I haven't done anything). Also, the onboard sound card (intel) doesn't work, but that's another task (I at least have a compatible card for that).

So I've been testing Gnome Do and I now want to activate docky. To do that I have to activate the desktop effects, so I installed drivers for my graphics card which work fine. But I have an infamous issue with my compiz which causes all title bars of windows to disappear. Is there a solution in which I can activate docky and still have my title bars?

Is there some way top stop the "blind effect" of compiz so that when you double click the top title bar of a window that it maximizes the window instead of the rolling up type effect? Also when i place my mouse on the top right of the screen it brings it to a choosing window type mode where you can pick which window you would like to open, is it possible to get this on the top left of the screen instead? Lastly when I use Kdebluetooth4 to send a file to my computer where does that file save to?

So when I upgraded to Slack64 13.1 on my asus MB homebrewed desktop and Slack 13.1 on my compaq presario a900 laptop, I started having issues with the xterm title (in Terminal--not Konsole) being too dynamic. By "too dynamic" I mean that I can't actually change the title. The dynamic title (from my .bashrc) is basically just pwd. Whenever I try to set the title (via terminal->set title (menu)), I changes it for a split second, and then reverts back to the dynamic title.
This is merely a petty annoyance, so to get around it, I added an xtitle function that I grabed somewhere online (just echos "33]0;$*07"). So for nano-ing some file, I'd type:xtitle some_file.txt; nano some_file.txt
That works just fine (kind of annoying to type though). running xtitle alone won't actually change the name either though (I'm pretty sure it's the same command as what terminal does anyway). That is, running: xtitle some_file.txt
changes the title for a split second, and the reverts back to my old pwd. What I really want is to have it dynamically name it "some_file.txt" whenever I use nano, but that appears to be a functionality of zsh (with the preexec() fxn).I'm wondering if anyone else has had this problem, and if you have a fix for it.

My laptop (Acer Aspire 6930G) runs 10.10 like a dream. On my netbook (Asus 1001 pX) 10.10 sucks. And it uses the Unity interface which I suspect as being the problem. Apart from that I don't like it (the unity interface) - so I would love to know how to get rid of it.

I posted here a couple weeks ago about my wireless issues and someone suggested I download an update of firmware for my Broadcom wireless card. The problem is I can't even connect to the Internet with a wired/Auto Ethernet connection in order to download said firmware. I tried downloading it on a different computer then using a flash drive to transfer it, but when I opened it on my computer, a message popped up saying the files were corrupted (this happens every time I try to install any program/update from a flash drive). So I tried today to use the wired connection to download the firmware but a) it wouldn't recognize the connection, so I deleted the AutoEthernet connection, rebooted, and activated the new one, as per the solution I'd read in a different thread on the forums. The wired connection worked, but only intermittently--it disconnects about every minute or so--and even when I'm connected, Firefox won't load any pages so I still can't get the update I need for my card.
I feel like I'm out of options here--I've been having this problem for about 7 months and I, or my much more Linux-savvy acquaintance, have not been able to figure out the problem. I'm thinking the only solution at this point is to go back to running Windows, which I really don't want to have to do.

Everything worked 100% great untill I change color depth to 16 bits.I do not want 24 Bits, I want 16 Bits. I have good reasons. Never had this problem in Gutsy 7.10 ...I deeply regret in upgrading to 9.10 ...
My video card:
Gforce 7950 GX2
Changes to xorg.conf file: Firstly, I saved it at 16 color depth with the sudo nvidia-settings and by clicking on the save to xorg.conf file Button. Rebooted computer....... It worked, saved file, and I got the following bugs:
*Cannot move windows by dragging their title bars.
*Cannot see close "X" Button in the title bar.
*Cannot see Minimize Button in the title bar.
*Cannot see Maximize Button in the title bar.
Went back to 24 bits and problem got resolved. Then i tryed: I did sudo gedit xorg.conf I changed all the 24's with 16's ... Rebooted computer....... It works GOOD... BUT: I got the same bugs from before. I will retype them below
*Cannot move windows by dragging their title bars.
*Cannot see close "X" Button in the title bar.
*Cannot see Minimize Button in the title bar.
*Cannot see Maximize Button in the title bar.
My xorg.conf file:

# nvidia-settings: version 1.0 (buildd@palmer) Sun Feb 1 20:21:04 UTC 2009

I have an issue with my ATI 5800 card. Installation was flawless (dual boot with Windows 7 64 bit with all updates installed. Upon reboot, I have a black border around the entire Desktop. My screen resolution is set to maximum.Being new to all this, I am somewhat perplexed how the ATI Catalyst Control Center works. In Windows 7, this is the Scaling Option in the Catalyst Control Center which can easily rectify the situation. I have verified that the Catalyst Control Center is installed but I have no idea how to proceed to fix this.I have been searching Google for two days with no luck - lots of suggestions, but no fix. Can someone point me in the right direction as I would like to learn and understand how to use this OS.

I searched for an answer to this problem for two days now, and only after I asked in #ubuntu (which I almost never do because it's so busy that my question is instantly upscrolled) did I find out the simple and undocumented solution. So I'm posting this for posterity and anyone who might make the same dumb mistake I did.
The problem I experienced was a disappearance of gnome borders from rdesktop through tsclient which had severe consequences on my ability to access remote computers.
Example image: [url]
As you can see there are no gnome borders to that paint window (via rdp) and the problem persists even in different resolutions. When in full screen mode, it is impossible to ctrl+alt+enter (or alt+tab, alt+esc, etc., I tried everything) out of the rdp session, it just blinks and stays in the window. I had to start>logout>disconnect just to get back to ubuntu. The only solution that ubuntu-pros offer is to turn off compiz, which I do not have nor have had on my machine. The sticky in this subforum explains:
Quote:
Where did my window borders go? - cc7gir
This is a common mistake caused by disabling some plugins in CompizConfig Settings Manager. To fix, open the manager (System > Preferences > CompizConfig Settings Manager) and find the "Window Decorations" plugin. Check the box and you're all set.
Fortunately, the mention of window decoration reminded me of some recent setting I came across. A few minutes of serious brain-scouring led me to the tsclient performance tab with a big fat check on "Hide window manager's decorations." I checked it two days ago thinking it would remove weird glowy-ness or whatever from the remote OS, allowing for faster communication and less lag; unknowingly, it just removes gnome's border from the window and ruins your whole remote access experience. I just unchecked it and connected, boom problem fixed.

machine: kubuntu 11.04x64 w/ kde4 the top terminal is of Yakuake w/ "No Border" option already enabled the bottom is of Konsole w/ "No Border" option also enabled how do I remove all borders from Yakuake to make it resemble Konsole at the bottom so as only the transparent terminal portion is visible?
if not possible what is a better replacement to Yakuake that has true no border settings, as well allows drag/drop of texts into the terminal? Already tried Tilda but it doesn't allow you to drag and drop texts into the terminal; tried Guake but can't get it to work in Kubuntu.
