Ubuntu :: Gnome Borders Disappeared From Tsclient

Aug 18, 2010

I searched for an answer to this problem for two days now, and only after I asked in #ubuntu (which I almost never do because it's so busy that my question is instantly upscrolled) did I find out the simple and undocumented solution. So I'm posting this for posterity and anyone who might make the same dumb mistake I did.

The problem I experienced was a disappearance of gnome borders from rdesktop through tsclient which had severe consequences on my ability to access remote computers.

Example image: [url]

As you can see there are no gnome borders to that paint window (via rdp) and the problem persists even in different resolutions. When in full screen mode, it is impossible to ctrl+alt+enter (or alt+tab, alt+esc, etc., I tried everything) out of the rdp session, it just blinks and stays in the window. I had to start>logout>disconnect just to get back to ubuntu. The only solution that ubuntu-pros offer is to turn off compiz, which I do not have nor have had on my machine. The sticky in this subforum explains:

Quote:

Where did my window borders go? - cc7gir

This is a common mistake caused by disabling some plugins in CompizConfig Settings Manager. To fix, open the manager (System > Preferences > CompizConfig Settings Manager) and find the "Window Decorations" plugin. Check the box and you're all set.

Fortunately, the mention of window decoration reminded me of some recent setting I came across. A few minutes of serious brain-scouring led me to the tsclient performance tab with a big fat check on "Hide window manager's decorations." I checked it two days ago thinking it would remove weird glowy-ness or whatever from the remote OS, allowing for faster communication and less lag; unknowingly, it just removes gnome's border from the window and ruins your whole remote access experience. I just unchecked it and connected, boom problem fixed.

Ubuntu :: Gnome Classic Borders Are Missing?

Jul 4, 2011

I am using 11.04. The Unity and Ubuntu Classic (no effects) are working as designed. The Ubuntu Classic DE has no window borders. I have searched and tried several solutions for similar issues but those have not worked. More info can be provided as requested. This problem began after installing Lubuntu as an alternative DE and I have since removed it but the problem remains. I could have, in the time that I have been searching, re-installed Ubuntu but wanted to resolve this problem. The OS is on my laptop and I do not have any data that would be lost. The system has been setup with a separate /home partition so necessary/needed data will not be lost.

Ubuntu :: Fully Custom Looks For Gnome - Decorate Window Borders / Toolbars

Mar 31, 2011

I've been researching on how to fully decorate the window borders and toolbars but I can't seem to get a clear as day answer. The threads I've found that have plenty of information are quite old (usually 2006), and others lead to things I already had tested with, such as Gnome Color Chooser. GCC was very nice, but it didn't really do everything I wanted. For one, I could only change the colors of the Main Menu, but not other menus such as the menus within Firefox (those are still grey with white letters and an orange highlight when hovering). It also wouldn't change the colors for the factory clock in the taskbar without messing up a bunch of other things. The list goes on.

What's even more confusing and the reason why I haven't begun is the following. Some people mention GTK+2, others Metacity, and others COmpiz and others Emerald. I know what COmpiz and Emerald are, but I don't understand how they're related (or unrelated) to the other 2 terms. Some threads mention how Emerald offers better functions than the rest, others just talk about editing Metacity themes. In short, I'm completely lost in the terminology. I do understand that the editing to get the exact look I want has to be done by hand, and I'm willing to do that. It's a bit pointless though if I'm stuck with the terminology I've mentioned. I want to know which themes I can search and be able to edit them to the looks I want.

Debian Multimedia :: Xcompmgr 'master' - Rounded Window Borders Don't Draw And Redraw Properly When Using The Terminal (gnome-terminal And The LXDE And Xfce Ones)

Aug 26, 2011

I find xcompmgr more than adequate for making a desktop look pretty modern, and I don't like the more extravagentCompiz gimmicks - but there is one thing that irritates when using xcompmgr which someone here might have worked round.

Rounded window borders don't draw and redraw properly when using the Terminal (gnome-terminal and the LXDE and Xfce ones) or system monitor and moving them from their default place. You get this little white botch at the corners. I'm not massively technical and I'm ambivalent about how much more I want to learn as I have plenty of creative outlets already, but I would like to solve this. Somehow xcompmgr is treating these programs as a different class? It's capable of drawing the window borders properly as it is just these two programs that get botched. Possibly this doesn't get noticed as maybe people usually use xcompmgr with openbox and LXDE and their square window borders. I did do a search but there was nothing matching what I saw.

Ubuntu :: Applications Disappeared From GNOME Menus?

Jun 19, 2011

my problem is that the Applications menu is empty and Preferences and Administration no longer appear under the System menu.I'm running 11.04 and I use Ubuntu Classic because I prefer the GNOME interface. The other day I was trying out various audio/multimedia players so I was installing and uninstalling several programs with the Software Center.

I started to play a CD in Audacious when the system crashed. The screen went dark but the computer kept running. I ended up doing a hard reset. Everything booted up normally and everything seems to run fine except my GNOME menu is messed up. The Applications menu is empty and Preferences and Administration no longer appear under the System menu. (I realize I can get to these through System Settings but I want the menus back) Furthermore alacarte will not run so that I can edit the menu contents.

I've tried using one of the old menu versions in /home/dan/.config/menus but they are all outdated and I cannot edit them. It also doesn't bring back Preferences and Administration.I've tried reinstalling alacarte and that doesn't do anything.I've tried using other panel programs like Docky and AWN but I have the same menu problem.I also tried resetting the panels to defaults but that doesn't fix the problem.

General :: Ubuntu 10.10 To Win7 Pro Using Either TSClient Or Remmina?

Oct 17, 2010

'm wanting to remote into my Win7 machine at home to copy a file to my Ubuntu laptop. I've disabled my firewall. Worth noting is I have changed my default remote port to 22, though it shouldn't cause an issue AFAIK. I have selected to share one of my folders in my home directory. I select to map the folder or entire drive and connect. I get to the Ubuntu folder which I wish to copy items into, and in doing so I get this error:

"\tsclientshikeDocuments is not accessible. You might not have permission to use this network resource. Contact the administrator of this server to find out if you have access permissions.

Attempt to access invalid address."

Mapping a drive through Windows to Windows remote session has had no such issues. I also tried copying from the mapped drive and get the same issue. After the error occurs the drive is completely inaccessible till I reconnect.

Does anyone know how to get around this, or can suggest an alternative way of accessing my files remotely that will work?

Debian Multimedia :: Gnome Theme Menu Arrows Have Randomly Disappeared

Jun 25, 2011

I'm running Debian Squeeze, and I have a gnome theme called "Moomex" installed. I have had it for a while and it has worked fine, until it suddenly stopped displaying menu scroll arrows (like for long bookmark menus in web browsers). I can still scroll, but in place of the arrows is a solid colored rectangle that clashes with my theme. I went searching and found my theme's arrow image files (see code below). I have no idea how these files are implemented into the theme display, so I don't know how to re-enable them. I tried reinstalling the theme, but it changed nothing. These arrows show up just fine in any other stock theme, and they were fine in this one too until they randomly disappeared.

General :: Connect To Remote Desktop From Lucid (with Tsclient) To XP (with UltraVNC)

I open tsclient in linux, enter the laptop IP and protocol = RDP, hit connect and it opens the windows logon, I can connect and login, but its not using UltraVNC (its running on the XP), I know this because I close UltraVNC from the remote desktop and the connection still works so it seems its using the windows built in remote desktop.

How can I connect to UltraVNC instead of XP default remote desktop?

I want to do this because I read UltraVNC works better for screen refreshs, my currently remote desktop connection works really bad for screen refreshs.

General :: Obtaining Windows Printer Share SMB Settings (for Tsclient/rdesktop)?

Aug 22, 2011

I have access to a "virtual" Windows server terminal, which I can access through my Ubuntu Linux via tsclient or rdesktop. Additionally, there are printer shares on this network, which can be accessed from any Windows PC on the network (including the "virtual" terminals); lets say the address is [URL]. Now, I open \printshares.company.com in the "virtual" terminal in rdesktop (avoiding tsclient since it has a Bug #94743 in tsclient (Ubuntu): Terminal Server Client isn't able to copy to/from clipboard) - and I can see all printers fine.. However, when I'm on my Linux machine directly on the work network, I try and do something like:

$ ping printshares.company.com
PING printshares.company.com (192.168.0.200) 56(84) bytes of data.
^C64 bytes from 192.168.0.200: icmp_req=1 ttl=124 time=10.4 ms

[code].....

Is it possible to retrieve the - let's call them "connection settings" - from the Windows terminal session, so I could replicate them under Linux when running smbclient? the IT department running these Windows servers is quite irritated by people using Linux; and will offer no support to those kinds of "customers". Furthermore, if obtaining those settings requires some installation on the client session, since I don't have permissions to install anything on the Windows terminal session.

Ubuntu Networking :: Rdesktop And Tsclient Return "unable To Connect" With No Explanation?

So I was trying to remotely access my XP laptop from my Ubuntu laptop. I read up on tsclient and rdesktop and tried both methods. For example, in the terminal, I typed:

rdesktop <host ip>
However, this came back with the following error:
autoselected keyboard map en-us.

rdesktop -k en-us <host ip>
This yielded the following error:
ERROR: <host ip>: unable to connect.

No clarification, no explanation. nothing. Does anyone have any ideas?
