Ubuntu :: No Windows Borders Using Compiz

Apr 17, 2010

I installed ubuntu 10.04 and after installing the drivers for my graphic card ATI Mobility Radeon HD4570, windows borders do not appear anymore. When I type "metacity --replace" borders come back, but I can't use compiz, also when I try to disable "Window Decoration" from the compizConfig Settings it doesn't work, it keeps always enabled. I tried this hack here [URL] but it didn't work for me (or I didn't apply it correctly, I'm new to the system).

Ubuntu :: Compiz Windows Borders Not Working On 11.04?

May 1, 2011

I have recently upgraded to 11.04 and everything works except for compiz and emerald, every time I enable compiz to be the window manager the borders either do not work or they do not appear. I switched the window manager to metacity and now the borders work but I can not get any effects at all. Also emerald never replaced the window borders either.

Ubuntu :: Windows Are Unmovable And Lost Their Borders And Buttons?

Jun 14, 2010

I'm posting this for a new member who needs help, his registration hasn't gone through yet. His computer (10.04) a fresh install not 3 weeks old, has now had all his windows loose their outer borders and the 3 close, minimize, and maximize buttons. Clicking on one underneath another does not allow any other ones to focus- only the top window, Firefox, remains in focus. None of the windows are movable. I've used force quit to close windows. New windows open the same way- with no outer border, now locked to the upper left corner, and still unmovable.

Things that were open and close with force quit are still in the panel bars, and the panel bars are showing up like they are focused on. I've never seen this problem before in 10.04 or even 8.04. Has anyone else run into this, know how to fix it?

Ubuntu :: Startup Without Windows' Borders - Shadows And Title Bar?

Nov 25, 2010

I have searched around but did not find anything similar, so I make a new post. I have installed Mac4Lin icons, theme and font, and I am using Emerald (with "emerald --replace" command in the window manager of compiz) and everythin is fine.

Some few times (every 4~5 days), when I start the system, it opens up as the title, like Emerald is not starting or something. If I logoff and then logon again, it is fine. Not that is a serious problem... just annoying in case you want to demonstrate the "power of the system" in an important meeting and it shows up like that.

OpenSUSE :: Unable The Top Parts And The Borders Of Windows?

Aug 4, 2011

Is there a way to enable the top parts and the borders of windows in openSUSE to be partially transparent? If so, I'd be grateful if someone told me how. Like in this image, the top part where it says "Mozilla Firefox" and the border of that window are all partially transparent (yes, I know that's Windows, lol). I'm running 11.4 KDE.[URL]..

Ubuntu :: Grub Not Showing Windows 7?

Feb 11, 2010

I was foolishly messing around with Grub trying to get it so it only show my two most recent kernel versions of Ubuntu and Windows 7. The tutorials on how to do this were not clear, so I deemed it not a big deal and ultimately didn't end up making any changes. However when I restarted to boot into Windows 7 it was gone for Grub's boot list. I looked at the grub.cfg file and in it under os-prober, where i'm assuming Windows 7 should be there was only Vista (which wouldn't boot when I tried it, just a black screen). I had upgraded from Vista over the internet when Windows 7 first came out, then installed Ubuntu and it worked fine until this. I am using 64-bit Ubuntu 9.10, and have Grub 1.97 beta~4 installed, which was installed with Ubunutu.

Ubuntu Servers :: Name Not Showing Up In Windows Or Networks?

Mar 21, 2011

My server name, salamander, is not showing up in windows networking or in the networking items on linux computers. I have checked, double checked and tried several samba settings to see if I can make it work, but to no avail. Its shares can be accessed by any computer by going directly to 10.10.1.101, salamander's fixed IP.

My workstation, bear, shows up. I edited hosts to read: "10.10.1.101 salamander"
Any machine can access the share on salamander using the ip address, but not even Bear can connect directly with the computer name.

When I go to networks in Salamander, all it views is itself and a windows network. Inside the windows network is only salamander.

Bear shows up in the list of servers, and also has samba running. Eagle and Bearcub are also ubuntu without samba and do not show up in the list either. Understandably so.

Here is my smb.conf:

Code:
[global]
workgroup = WILDLIFE
server string = %h server (Samba, Ubuntu)
security = SHARE

Now I don't know how to revert back to windows because this does not have a "My Computer". My os is windows XP professional, by the way.

Ubuntu / Apple :: Windows 7 Not Showing Up Under Grub For Macbook Pro

Jan 23, 2011

I am trying to triple boot osx, win7 and ubuntu 10.10 on my macbook pro. This is the way I did it:

-Installed osx and created 2 partitions in disk utility, one for osx and another formated as dos fat to manually hybritized my drive and allow for windows installation (the new bootcamp is currently messed up, so can't do it that way).

-Installed win7 by bio booting the cd, and deleting the formatted partition (dos fat) and creating a new one via win installation.

-Installed ubuntu by bios booting the cd and creating its own partition in setup.

Now, when I turn on my macbook and press alt, 2 icons come up, mac and windows (so good so far!). But when I go into the windows option, grub loads and I see 5 entries:

-Ubuntu
-Ubuntu safe mode
-Memtest
-OSX 32 bit
-OSX 64 bit

Obviously osx is not going to boot under bios boot. But where is win7 that should be in the list?

Ubuntu Installation :: Sharing Disc With Windows 7 - No Option Showing?

Mar 24, 2011

I have just got a new Compaq/HP netbook with Windows 7, and I have downloaded Ubuntu 10.10 (using my main Ubuntu system) and put it on a USB stick to load it "alongside" Windows.

At install phase on the new machine there is no option shown to add Ubuntu alongside Windows; only two options are shown, to erase the disk entirely and load Ubuntu, or the advanced option to select the disk partitioning manually.

I don't want to do either of these!

What happened to the third option, share the disk between operating systems?

I have used Linux for years, and don't want Windows, but it is safer to be able to boot up Windows for some things (testing ADSL line for Orange France, for instance).

Ubuntu :: Windows 7 Is Not Showing In Boot Menu Even After Editing 40_custom File

Oct 9, 2010

I am very new user to ubuntu and new to this community, first of all if i make anything wrong in this post please forgive and guide me,

My friend have a laptop which was running in windows 7.Last week he installed Ubuntu 10.04 Lucid Lynx. But after that boot menu is not showing and it is automatically booting to ubuntu.

So i pressed Shift key during boot and checked boot menu list, which is showing only linux OS ,Linux OS recovery mode and memtest86,No windows 7 option.

So I did following things.

Step1: Tried to find out the partitions using fdisk -l

2.So i tried to add a manual entry by editing the /etc/grub.d/40_custom file like below ,and changed the permission using chmod +x update-grub command

3.Run the update-grub command

But it is not updating the manual entry,The above update-grub command output showing the update-grub command not even entering into the /etc/grub.d/40_custom file because i put echo in that file in that ,and that also not coming.
