I've just had enough of Enlightenment e16, so I uninstalled it. Now my window borders have disappeared and I can only input to one window - the first one I opened. If I want to input to another, I have to close the first one. I thought maybe gdm wasn't running (I'm using GNOME), but this is the output of ps -A | grep dm:

I recently upgraded the motherboard/processor on my computer (as in quadrupled the processor and octupled the ram). The new board has a built in GPU (intel) and from searching the forums, I think this is part of the problem. Every time I boot up the computer, I need to open the Compiz icon and use it to reload the window manager before I see any title bars, borders, etc. 've tried the .bashrc hack (metacity --replace), but that doesn't do anything. In fact, whenever I open the terminal, I need to have two tabs open in order to use it, and when I close it all the borders go away again (even when I haven't done anything). Also, the onboard sound card (intel) doesn't work, but that's another task (I at least have a compatible card for that).
View 9 Replies View RelatedI searched for an answer to this problem for two days now, and only after I asked in #ubuntu (which I almost never do because it's so busy that my question is instantly upscrolled) did I find out the simple and undocumented solution. So I'm posting this for posterity and anyone who might make the same dumb mistake I did.
The problem I experienced was a disappearance of gnome borders from rdesktop through tsclient which had severe consequences on my ability to access remote computers.

As you can see there are no gnome borders to that paint window (via rdp) and the problem persists even in different resolutions. When in full screen mode, it is impossible to ctrl+alt+enter (or alt+tab, alt+esc, etc., I tried everything) out of the rdp session, it just blinks and stays in the window. I had to start>logout>disconnect just to get back to ubuntu. The only solution that ubuntu-pros offer is to turn off compiz, which I do not have nor have had on my machine. This is a common mistake caused by disabling some plugins in CompizConfig Settings Manager. To fix, open the manager (System > Preferences > CompizConfig Settings Manager) and find the "Window Decorations" plugin. Check the box and you're all set.
Fortunately, the mention of window decoration reminded me of some recent setting I came across. A few minutes of serious brain-scouring led me to the tsclient performance tab with a big fat check on "Hide window manager's decorations." I checked it two days ago thinking it would remove weird glowy-ness or whatever from the remote OS, allowing for faster communication and less lag; unknowingly, it just removes gnome's border from the window and ruins your whole remote access experience. I just unchecked it and connected, boom problem fixed.
My problem started when I uninstalled then reinstalled my video driver. Now programs such as Firefox and Thunderbird cannot be minimized. The square on the upper right is gone. I am at a loss what to do.

Not sure how mine got so wide but I have looked in Appearance, Compiz, Emerald Themes, etc and I can't figure it out! I am using Ubuntu Jaunty and have searched high and low. I think it's gnome but I'm confused about windowing environments. Found some ideas (tried them all - all seemed reasonable (such as holding ALT while mousing, etc). So far no luck.

They just vanished. Also, opened windows don't appear on the taskbar, so I can't switch between windows, not even with ALT + TAB. The mouse isn't an arrow anymore, but a dark cross :s

Can that be the reason?
We've all probably had this issue at one time or another.Window borders disappearing when Compiz is enabled. I'm on 10.04 with Intel GMA 4500M graphics. I would say about 30% of the time when I boot up the computer, I have no window borders. I use the Compiz Fusion icon just for this purpose, to reload the window manager and get back the window borders.Of course, the other 70% of the time the computer boots up with normal window borders. Is there a more permanent solution someone can provide than manually reloading the window manager on an as-needed basis?

When I start my computer everything seems fine on both monitors but once desktop is loaded and I start an app in the second monitor, I can't type anything and the window borders are missing. If I type "DISPLAY:=0.1 metacity" the problem gets fixed but I get an error that a window manager is running already.
I have AMD/Nvidia, GeForce 8800GT.
How do I change the size of the window borders in Openbox. I find great difficulty in getting my pointer to 'catch' the window border to resize the window.

View 8 Replies View RelatedI recently did a fresh reinstall of opensuse 11.2 kde. After I installed it I updated the computer. However, when I returned to my computer after the update, I found the window borders to be missing and that I couldn't do anything with the desktop. I restarted, and lo and behold! I had KDE 4.4! Except I didn't want to install it. I perfectly like kde 4.3, and would probably prefer to move back to it until kde 4.4 becomes stable. Why did this happen? Had opensuse moved on to kde 4.4 already? Is there a way to get KDE 4.3 without reinstalling?
View 7 Replies View RelatedI had installed compiz and emerald when I was using Fedora 9, upgraded to 10 (compiz and emerald still working at this stage) tho when I upgraded to 11 compiz and emerald seem to have crashed (i upgraded using preupgrade both times, maybe this might be a bit of a problem...) Since upgrading to 11, neither compiz or emerald would work. Ive tried reinstalling both compiz and emerald, and even erasing them both, restarting and then installing (both times thru yum).
This has brought back compiz and the effects (I can use AWN, desktops on a cube etc) but there is no window borders (cant move, resize etc). Ive tried different window managers (emerald, gtk and even kde4 has been installed..) and tried reloading the window mangers thru the fusion icon. Nothing seems to work, unless I stop compiz from running at startup (but then I lose all the desktop 'candy'). Searching the net has brought up a couple of options (Under CCSM):
- Check the box "Windows Decorations" and under its properties write emerald --replace (or whatever WM)
- Check the box "Place windows"
but none of these seem to work either.
I've been using Slackware for about five years but I've never been bothered about compiz so it's all a bit new to me. Since I installed Slackware 13 (64bit) yesterday I noticed that compiz is one of the pre-installed packages so I thought I'd give it a blast.
I should probably have done a bit more research but I read on a forum that running "compiz --replace" will replace the default window manager with compiz so I gave it a try. The problem is that now none of my windows have borders so I can't move them or do anything. The worst part about the whole affair is that I can't even figure out how to revert to whatever the old window manager was.
EDIT : Just thought I'd add that I'm using XFCE.
EDIT++ : I've managed to revert the window manager by deleting my .cache directory. XFCE obviously maintainted the apps that were running and one of them was compiz. Now just to figure out how I can get compiz working. I presume emerald is the key...
I've been researching on how to fully decorate the window borders and toolbars but I can't seem to get a clear as day answer. The threads I've found that have plenty of information are quite old (usually 2006), and others lead to things I already had tested with, such as Gnome Color Chooser. GCC was very nice, but it didn't really do everything I wanted. For one, I could only change the colors of the Main Menu, but not other menus such as the menus within Firefox (those are still grey with white letters and an orange highlight when hovering). It also wouldn't change the colors for the factory clock in the taskbar without messing up a bunch of other things. The list goes on.
What's even more confusing and the reason why I haven't begun is the following. Some people mention GTK+2, others Metacity, and others COmpiz and others Emerald. I know what COmpiz and Emerald are, but I don't understand how they're related (or unrelated) to the other 2 terms. Some threads mention how Emerald offers better functions than the rest, others just talk about editing Metacity themes. In short, I'm completely lost in the terminology. I do understand that the editing to get the exact look I want has to be done by hand, and I'm willing to do that. It's a bit pointless though if I'm stuck with the terminology I've mentioned. I want to know which themes I can search and be able to edit them to the looks I want.
I've recently upgraded to gnome shell in experimental, and I like it so far. However, the window borders and themes look like how Gnome 2 did before you install gtk2-engines and some themes. Are there any themes in the repositories that I'm missing, or are they just not there yet?

I just installed it on one of my neighbors computers.I tried deleting an applet from the top menu bar and the entire menu bar disappeared. I click on the add new menu bar and it just throws something up on the side. I'm using 10.04. I never had this problem before.

View 1 Replies View RelatedK well i was trying to remove some partition since ubuntu took a lot of space so i messed around with ubintu until i found some partition editor. i went in system>Administrator>disk utility then i selected my 320 gb hard disk and deleted partitions (i didnt know what i was deleting them from). i restarted my computer and clicked on my vista on boot menu but i got an error which ive forgoten it was something like no disk. after that i clicked on ubuntu recovery and did update grub, then clicked on repair something (i forgot) it took like 30 minutes to repair but after that my vista dissapeared now i have 2 different linux in my boot menu. 1 is a linux 19 the other is a linux 22.

View 1 Replies View RelatedI recently installed KDE on my Ubuntu setup to try kubuntu by installing the kubuntu-desktop package.I decided I didn't enjoy KDE as much as GNOME, so I went back into GNOME and uninstalled the kubuntu-desktop package via Synaptic.That didn't remove ANY of the stuff that it brought in, so I searched for the keywords "kubuntu" and "kde" and uninstalled all packages but one (libdecoration0) to get rid of all the KDE-mess.Now, after logging back in...THERE IS NO WINDOW BORDER. AT ALL.

I find xcompmgr more than adequate for making a desktop look pretty modern, and I don't like the more extravagentCompiz gimmicks - but there is one thing that irritates when using xcompmgr which someone here might have worked round.
Rounded window borders don't draw and redraw properly when using the Terminal (gnome-terminal and the LXDE and Xfce ones) or system monitor and moving them from their default place. You get this little white botch at the corners. I'm not massively technical and I'm ambivalent about how much more I want to learn as I have plenty of creative outlets already, but I would like to solve this. Somehow xcompmgr is treating these programs as a different class? It's capable of drawing the window borders properly as it is just these two programs that get botched. Possibly this doesn't get noticed as maybe people usually use xcompmgr with openbox and LXDE and their square window borders. I did do a search but there was nothing matching what I saw.
using kde with F12 and since this morning all of the window controls have dissapeared. i'm more familiar with gnome and can't seem to find the settings for this. i'm attaching a screenshotFIXED- Switched back to kwin from compiz and that resolved the problem

View 1 Replies View RelatedI came into work this morning to find XFCE's window manager completely broken: no title bars, unable to move windows around, and unable to focus on a window to type in it (terminal, browser address bar, etc.). I tried going into the preferences then window manager settings, but just got a blank panel. Deleting .config/xfce4 didn't solve the problem.
I'm thinking of just doing a clean install of Xubuntu, or more likely another Xfce-based distro, since my current setup (regular Ubuntu with Xubuntu also installed) is quite messed up (same startup applications being used for Gnome and Xfce, and various other issues). I can't remember whether I did any updates last Friday that might have broken it.
Interestingly I used to have similar issues with Xmonad when I used it - some features didn't work properly and I had to restart the WM to fix them. Never did find a proper solution.
when I first installed Ubuntu (Karmic, x86), I removed the install of F-Spot via the Software Centre. I just tried reinstalling it, and the install went fine. Then I tried running it. The window flashed up for a second, then disappeared. It does this every time I try to run it, even after a cold boot. I have uninstalled and reinstalled several times, using USC, Synaptic, and apt-get. Always with the same result. I tried running it from terminal using sudo, and got the following output:
