Ubuntu :: Compiz Windows Borders Not Working On 11.04?
May 1, 2011
I have recently upgraded to 11.04 and everything works except for compiz and emerald, every time I enable compiz to be the window manager the borders either do not work or they do not appear. I switched the window manager to metacity and now the borders work but I can not get any effects at all. Also emerald never replaced the window borders either.
I installed ubuntu 10.04 and after installing the drivers for my graphic card ATI Mobility Radeon HD4570, windows borders do not appear anymore. When I type "metacity --replace" borders come back, but I can't use compiz, also when I try to disable "Window Decoration" from the compizConfig Settings it doesn't work, it keeps always enabled. I tried this hack here [URL] but it didn't work for me (or I didn't apply it correctly, I'm new to the system).
We've all probably had this issue at one time or another.Window borders disappearing when Compiz is enabled. I'm on 10.04 with Intel GMA 4500M graphics. I would say about 30% of the time when I boot up the computer, I have no window borders. I use the Compiz Fusion icon just for this purpose, to reload the window manager and get back the window borders.Of course, the other 70% of the time the computer boots up with normal window borders. Is there a more permanent solution someone can provide than manually reloading the window manager on an as-needed basis?
I had installed compiz and emerald when I was using Fedora 9, upgraded to 10 (compiz and emerald still working at this stage) tho when I upgraded to 11 compiz and emerald seem to have crashed (i upgraded using preupgrade both times, maybe this might be a bit of a problem...) Since upgrading to 11, neither compiz or emerald would work. Ive tried reinstalling both compiz and emerald, and even erasing them both, restarting and then installing (both times thru yum).
This has brought back compiz and the effects (I can use AWN, desktops on a cube etc) but there is no window borders (cant move, resize etc). Ive tried different window managers (emerald, gtk and even kde4 has been installed..) and tried reloading the window mangers thru the fusion icon. Nothing seems to work, unless I stop compiz from running at startup (but then I lose all the desktop 'candy'). Searching the net has brought up a couple of options (Under CCSM):
- Check the box "Windows Decorations" and under its properties write emerald --replace (or whatever WM)
I've been using Slackware for about five years but I've never been bothered about compiz so it's all a bit new to me. Since I installed Slackware 13 (64bit) yesterday I noticed that compiz is one of the pre-installed packages so I thought I'd give it a blast.
I should probably have done a bit more research but I read on a forum that running "compiz --replace" will replace the default window manager with compiz so I gave it a try. The problem is that now none of my windows have borders so I can't move them or do anything. The worst part about the whole affair is that I can't even figure out how to revert to whatever the old window manager was.
EDIT : Just thought I'd add that I'm using XFCE.
EDIT++ : I've managed to revert the window manager by deleting my .cache directory. XFCE obviously maintainted the apps that were running and one of them was compiz. Now just to figure out how I can get compiz working. I presume emerald is the key...
I recently upgraded the motherboard/processor on my computer (as in quadrupled the processor and octupled the ram). The new board has a built in GPU (intel) and from searching the forums, I think this is part of the problem. Every time I boot up the computer, I need to open the Compiz icon and use it to reload the window manager before I see any title bars, borders, etc. 've tried the .bashrc hack (metacity --replace), but that doesn't do anything. In fact, whenever I open the terminal, I need to have two tabs open in order to use it, and when I close it all the borders go away again (even when I haven't done anything). Also, the onboard sound card (intel) doesn't work, but that's another task (I at least have a compatible card for that).
I've just finished installing slack on my new computer, and after about 20 minutes of hair-pulling agony, I've gotten compiz working properly except for one plugin; the 3D windows plugin (windows hover over cube on rotate). I think it might be a corrupted ccsm- whenever I check the box next to the plugin, then try to rotate the cube, it is unchecked. Anyway, I know my graphics card (Geforce 6200 256Mb pci-e) is powerful enough to handle it since the driver installed properly and the effect worked on the knoppix live disk I used for partitioning. I'm running xfce and using emerald as the window decorator if it helps at all. It does the same thing with both animation packs.
I'm running Ubuntu 10.04, and it's been flawless until tonight where, after an update, the normal window borders stopped working and were replaced by these ugly never-seen-before borders. I can get the borders back, but it'll kill compiz, but if I have compiz, then I have the ugly weird boarders
Randomly my windows borders are either there are not, whats up with this? Its makin things a bit difficult minimizing windows switching windows etc, it doesnt happen all the time, just every other time i boot up, but its happened twice in a row now. And when it doesnt do it sometimes the borders close, minimize and expand boxes just disspear along with the title at the top i.e Firefox [URL]
I'm posting this for a new member who needs help, his registration hasn't gone through yet. His computer (10.04) a fresh install not 3 weeks old, has now had all his windows loose their outer borders and the 3 close, minimize, and maximize buttons. Clicking on one underneath another does not allow any other ones to focus- only the top window, Firefox, remains in focus. None of the windows are movable. I've used force quit to close windows. New windows open the same way- with no outer border, now locked to the upper left corner, and still unmovable.
Things that were open and close with force quit are still in the panel bars, and the panel bars are showing up like they are focused on. I've never seen this problem before in 10.04 or even 8.04. Has anyone else run into this, know how to fix it?
I have searched around but did not find anything similar, so I make a new post. I have installed Mac4Lin icons, theme and font, and I am using Emerald (with "emerald --replace" command in the window manager of compiz) and everythin is fine.
Some few times (every 4~5 days), when I start the system, it opens up as the title, like Emerald is not starting or something. If I logoff and then logon again, it is fine. Not that is a serious problem... just annoying in case you want to demonstrate the "power of the system" in an important meeting and it shows up like that.
Is there a way to enable the top parts and the borders of windows in openSUSE to be partially transparent? If so, I'd be grateful if someone told me how. Like in this image, the top part where it says "Mozilla Firefox" and the border of that window are all partially transparent (yes, I know that's Windows, lol). I'm running 11.4 KDE.[URL]..
My problem started when I uninstalled then reinstalled my video driver. Now programs such as Firefox and Thunderbird cannot be minimized. The square on the upper right is gone. I am at a loss what to do.
I'm trying to get to the config page where I once enabled wobbly windows and translucent borders. For the life of me, I can't seem to find it. I would think it to be in the desktop settings and associated with the qt4 engine somewhere, but it continues to evade me. How did I arrive at that config page??
I just built my linux box and i installed compiz and ccsm. When i change settings in ccsm nothing happens including after i reboot. Once in a while after i boot gnome do and yakuake don't start and the screen is frozen except for pointer.
I had Compiz, desktop cube and what not, working fine on my computer. Then I had to reinstall ubuntu and know it wont work. I installed compiz and the compiz setting thing is in my preferences, but when i try to edit something it does not effect anything.
I have an issue running compiz on Ubuntu 10.04. I have a Dell Studio 1458 with an Intel Graphics Card. I ran compiz-check and it keeps saying that "Software rasterizer in use". It is running under VMWare on Windows 7.I installed MacBuntu which installed compiz by itself.
I hope I'm posting in the right place. I'm relatively new to ubuntu. here goes:Compiz is not working. I have compiz installed, together with the CompizConfig settings manager, and the simple ccsm. When I change the settings in either of those things (or in System->Administration->Appearance->visual effects), no changes actually occur. I tried uninstalling and reinstalling compiz, and I tried a host of other things I could find advised for my situation. I'm at my wits end about this. When I type 'compiz' into the terminal, the screen, and all the windows, flash like crazy for a few seconds, and then the terminal returns:
Quote:
Xlib: extension "GLX" missing on display ":0.0". compiz (core) - Fatal: Root visual is not a GL visual compiz (core) - Error: Failed to manage screen: 0 compiz (core) - Fatal: No manageable screens found on display :0.0
Launching fallback window manager and just hangs there indefinitely.
I can't get any features of compiz desktop effects working on a fresh install of Karmic Koala. I've uninstalled and reinstalled with sudo apt-get remove compiz and uninstalled advanced desktop settings through the software center. I am completely up to date.
I have been using some of the compiz effects now for just over a week with no problems. but yesterday they stopped working for what seems to be no reason. I have the recommended nVidia driver installed, here is my graphics card from lspci:
I right clicked on my desktop, and went to 'Change Destop background', then visual effects. This has been set to None. I cannot change this to Normal or extra, as I get an error saying
Code: Desktop effects could not be enabled
I have followed another thread which explained how to unistall and reinstall compiz, but it did nothing.
I'm using edgers ppa and its been really nice until now, this morning I updated as usual and to my surprise after restart compiz is not working anymore.compiz-check does not print anything wrong with my system.
I've heard that Compiz is not working in Maverick. Is this true? Has it impacted computers with decent graphics cards much, or is it no big deal? I'm kinda confused, because of the Ubiquity thing. Is that replacing compiz?
I've been running an emerald theme in compiz for few months now and everything was running fine when a couple days ago VLC started acting weird and playing little static clicks every few seconds. Then the next time I booted up after an initial second of flashing my full desktop the screen blanked off a section on the left and bottom of my screen. When I logged in docky told me it was having trouble with the compositing, but when I scrolled over the spot where my docks are they were there. My arrow can be seen in the black areas as can the start panel when I scroll over it, but aside from that it is black and when I open I window the blackness covers it in that part. None of my compiz effects seem to be working.
I am running a pretty basic motherboard and I know basically nothing about this kind of thing but I looked up the built in integrated video card online : ATI Radeon - HD3000 Graphics, On Board Graphic Max. Memory Share Up to 512 MB. I have an ATI driver installed but when I look at my drivers it says it is installed but not currently in use. When I look at my visual effects page it is on none, so I tried changing it to normal and it says the effects can't be enabled. I am running a dual boot with windows and when I go into windows there doesn't seem to be any problems. I am running a Biostar A760G M2+, an AMD AthlonII x4 and running Ubuntu 10.04.
I've just upgraded to 11.04 and I can't get Super Key working in Compiz, which should be binded to Left Win. It shows up as Multi_key when I enter a key combination. However, if I bind Caps Lock to Super Key it works when entering a key combination. I'm also using a Logitech MK520 keyboard.
Still new to Ubuntu, and I've installed it on my laptop tonight (Alienware M11x, Ubuntu 11.04). I've got it pretty much how I want it, but I'm stuck with a CCSM/Compiz question.I have Compiz installed, along with the extra plugins (burn, etc). However, when I try to enable any effects, I get nothing as a result.I've rebooted, enabled both Gnome and KDE compatiblities, etc- nothing will work.I'm still learning the ins-and-outs of the terminal/command line system.
Has anyone had trouble getting their keybaord shortcuts to work? I have compiz running, which has introduced some minor quirks. When I'm in the KB Short Cuts gui interface, I cannot revert back to 'Disables'. Hitting the Backspace key takes me to the top of the page and does not revert to disabled? Gonna disable compiz and try again...
My compiz animations (magic lamp, airplane, ...) aren't working.I have an Intel GMA 4500M onboard but that shouldn't be the problem (I can enable effects from System > Preferences > Appearance).I'm using ubuntu 10.04.
I hope this is the correct section. I have recently updated to 10.04 and now Compiz/desktop effects wont work. When I try to turn visual effects on I get a message saying they could not be enabled. I'm a bit new to all this so not sure if I'm doing something wrong.I've looked at many threads regarding this problem and nothing they say has worked. iv tried using Hardware Drivers (in systems administration) but this says "no proprietary drivers are in use on this system".
Also I don't know whether this effects anything but when I open NVIDIA X Server Settings (in systems administration) i get a message saying "You do not appear to be using the NVIDIA X driver. Please edit your X configuration file (just run `nvidia-xconfig` as root), and restart the X server."Does anyone know how I can get Compiz/desktop effects working?.
