Ubuntu Installation :: Get A Black Screen When The System Starts Up?
May 1, 2011i have tried to install Ubuntu 11.04 but everytime i try i get a black screen when the system starts up. i have tried to install via cd and the upgrade option.I am currently using Ubuntu 10.04 and this has no problems.I have also tried the esc key when i insert the disc and this brings the option to install but after this i get a black screen again.

Aug 20, 2010I'm trying to install Ubuntu on an iMac G4, and I had a promising situation the first time through but I botched the install due to my newbishness and haven't been able to boot from the install CD since.
Here's the situation:
Hardware
800 Mhz G4
256 MB RAM
15" LCD display
32 MB GeForce2 MX Video Card
"Standard" Airport Wireless Card

What Happened: After poking around on the forums some and reading through some of the wiki pages, I decided that 8.04 would be a good place to start, so I downloaded and burned an install disc. My first attempt booted almost perfectly, but I confused the "booting from the CD" with "installed Ubuntu" (Iknow, I know...), and promptly rebooted back into OS X.
Since then, I've been unable to successfully boot from the CD. Using the 8.04 disc, I'm prompted for what style of install I'd like, and I feebly type "live," the ramdisk loads, and then the screen goes blank, reads "loading" in the upper left for a second, the optical drive whirs for a bit, and then everything hangs on a black screen with a white cursor in the upper left. I thought I might just be impatient, so I let it sit overnight, but there was no change in the situation.
I know this isn't much information to work with. Is there a way to enable a more robust boot description? Something that will let me know what's going on when the screen goes blank and the optical drive whirs?

Aug 31, 2010finally just got ubuntu to install on my emac a1002, I had to use the powerpc version. The install went fine, it restarted and loaded ubuntu, but after it loads goes to a blank black screen. And I imagine it sits there forever, yet I've only left if for about 5mins or so. The emac is from 2003, and has a 1ghz processor (Powerpc) and has 256mb ram.

Jul 17, 2011I've just tried installing Ubuntu 10.04 on my powerpc. It installed fine, and booted first time ok, but since restarting it just seems to boot into a black screen. My monitor says 'going to sleep mode'
I don't think it's hanging on anything, as I can hear sounds if I play around with the keyboard. Could this be something to do with the resolution being too high? If so, can anyone tell me how I go about changing this?

I'm able to get to the ubuntu menu, asking to install or start live boot, but when I select live boot I get a black screen( backlight is still on but entire screen is black). I've waited at that screen for quite some time with no luck.

Jul 24, 2011Iam tring to install 11.4 on my new computer, when i start the computer the green screen pops up and syslinux starts. However when it finishes loading a dialog box pops up saying "Make sure that cd number 1 is in your drive" . Obviously it it is,
because i am booting from the dvd. I dropped to the shell where i saw this message "Inappropriate ioct1 for device". What does all this mean.

Nov 18, 2010I've been installing Linux Mint with OSX on a bunch of iMacs, and its been working perfectly excpet for one of the iMacs. The screen will just go black when I boot from a live CD, but I can hear the login sound play. It's strange because all of the other iMac's run the live CD just fine. What could the problem be? I don't know what I can do to troubleshoot this problem.

Apr 3, 2011Just did a fresh install of Natty B1 (previously had alpha 2).. I noticed this issue w/ A2, as well.. plugging in the exterminal monitor (via mini-displayport-to-vga connector) will do the following:
1) turn the screen on the laptop's display entirely black (but not turn it off).. i can move and see the mouse cursor.. but everything on the window appears to not rending or "painted" black..
2) external monitor never becomes active..
the only way to recover is to kill/restart X or reboot after disconnecting the extmon.. having extmon plugged in from boot produces the same results (and it doesn't seem to ever become active during boot up). sometimes this won't happen right away if i plug in the external monitor.. but opening the Monitors system prefs dialog will definitely cause (or detect displays) ,etc I waited to see if the issue would fix itself w/ the beta update, but it hasn't.. Any other 8,1 owners out there that can verify this issue? My (totally uninformed) guess is that it's due to differences in the display/gfx hardware and thunderbolt integration(?)
(I've seen a verification verifications of working-out-of-the-box.. but they were from 8,2 and 8,3 owners (which have discrete graphics cards))... If anyone's gotten this to work with some config stuff, I'd love to see that as well (since the wiki page for 8,1 says it works ootb). If someone could let me know where I should look to capture error output when the above issue occurs, that would be awesome.

Jun 25, 2010Have tried to install 10.04 from a cd sent to me by ubuntu. lts on an x-windows medion pc mt7 (med mt 345). Previously comp. was running windows xp pro. After pressing restart at end of install process I get nothing! Black screen, no mouse control , no keyboard control, nothing at all.
Have tried putting cd in again but get nothing, on pressing restart the cd was politely ejected. Have tried rebooting a few times but get no response. Everything is switched on. So now I cannot even get a terminal up, the only thing I am fairly certain about is that the computer is sending a signal to the screen as there is Not a "no signal" message.

Sep 1, 2010I have an 80GB HDD where I installed Windows XP first and then Ubuntu. The thing is that whenever I shut down my computer and then turn it back on (wether it's right away or a few hours later, or the next day), I get the GRUB screen where you have to choose Ubuntu, but after that just a completely black screen. I then have to force a shutdown, then turn it back on, and it works. Whenever I restart it works too, this seems to happen only after a shutdown.

Mar 9, 2011I can't get Ubuntu to reinstall on my computer... I recently reformatted and re-installed windows and I think that might be the problem because I was running Ubuntu 64-bit before I reformatted... Now the problem I am getting is when I go to boot up Ubuntu to finish the install it loads on the purple screen with the Ubuntu logo then goes into a black screen with white letters. Its the screen that tells you to reboot and go into windows a run 'chkdsk /r' and reboot again, the problem is I have followed those directions 3 times and it didn't work, I don't think the operating system really knows what the problem is.

before i had ubuntu 10.04 which could only run in x's safe graphics mode - allowing for full screen resolution but with handicapped graphics - for example videos fullscreen would be quirky and run with cpu at 100%, something which was no problem before 10.04.
then i tried ubuntu 10.10 and later lubuntu 10.10 (which had exactly the same problem); the monitor is running 1440x900 while the computer is rendering to only 1024x768 - leaving a huge black border on right and bottom of screen. the gfx is still crippled; videos fullscreen is quirky as before.

Jan 13, 2010So I'm in need of VM'ing a couple OS's to keep from repartitioning and dual booting my desktop. The first I'm trying to boot is a 64bit version of windows (have XP and 7 disc, trying XP for now) as I need to convert some of my work's ancient programs that still use DOS functions.
I choose Virtualbox over VMware just for the sake of VB being in the repos. Install and initial config went fine, but when I try to start (run) the VM the screen goes black, then the computer completely stops responding and needs a hard reboot. Pasting what I believe to be the error part in the log. If you need the entire log I can email or host it - too big for a post. Kernel Version - 2.6.32-trunk-amd64. Debian Sid

Big mistake The screen went black.I can force a shutdown, login and I get the same black screen. May 9, 2010I recently installed Ubuntu on my Powerbook G4 1.6ghz 13". The install went fine along with the first boot off the harddrive. The problem came when I started the computer for the second time. X starts but the display comes up blank. To be sure I didn't mess up the install I reinstalled Ubuntu and installed all the updates and proprietary drivers as well as setup remote desktop options. I can now start the computer and get a remote desktop but nothing on the computer's display. I've tried to edit the xorg.conf but X has not created one. I'm at a loss of what to try next.

Jun 29, 2011I had switched over from Windows to Ubuntu and got rid of windows completely but still had the recovery partition and deleted it. I then tried to add that space to another partition, "Media." For whatever reason it deleted the "Media" partition so I used TestDisk to restore it. I did something wrong and when I rebooted my computer it would not boot so I used my LiveCD to check whats wrong and it had deleted all of my partitions and Ubuntu was nowhere to be found. So I used TestDisk again to recover them, this time it was successful. when I start my computer it does not boot into Ubuntu it just shows a black screen with the white underscore ("_") flashing in the corner. I'm not sure but I don't think it is booting into the correct partition, I think it would be trying to boot the first partition, /dev/sda1, rather than /dev/sda3. If this is the problem how could I fix it? I got all the boot loader information, here it is:

I have Ubuntu 9.1 with wubi and Vista on my laptop. I was playing my laptop through the TV, then I tried to switch it back to computer control and the computer went black. I had to hold to power button to restart, and suddenly grub4dos starts up when I try to launch ubuntu. I can still launch Vista. Is there anything I can do to save my system? At the very least, I would like to be able to copy data from my ubuntu system to my vista system. How can I do that? I can't find C:/ubuntu/disks. It doesn't seem to exist.

Oct 3, 2010After using Ubuntu 10.4 for months, my computer has started turning itself on without my pressing the on button. Sometimes it gets halfway through the boot process and shuts itself down. Sometimes it gets all the way to the desktop and a window pops up saying shutdown in 60 seconds however it never waits but shuts down immediately. Probably the second time this happened, I had time enough to get to the Power Manager and made sure it was set to 'never' power down. Currently the on/off cycling is happening so quickly I can't check the BIOS or grup. My only control is the master power switch on the back

Jul 20, 2010The ssh server is running Xubuntu 9.04. It was working before. Then I tried SSHing today and it gave me a connection refused. The computers I've tried SSHing from were running Ubuntu Netbook Remix 10.04, MacOS, and Solaris 10. None of them would connect. The ssh server is running the latest version of openssh-server (according to apt-get install). I'm assuming something in /etc/ssh/ got changed but I'm not sure.
