Iam tring to install 11.4 on my new computer, when i start the computer the green screen pops up and syslinux starts. However when it finishes loading a dialog box pops up saying "Make sure that cd number 1 is in your drive" . Obviously it it is,
because i am booting from the dvd. I dropped to the shell where i saw this message "Inappropriate ioct1 for device". What does all this mean.
I have installed Opensuse 11.4 and the desktop won't start i get an green striped screen, i have tried to run yast but it seems mine NVIDIA isn't correct installed.
I have an NVidia SE6150 Graphic Card and i have tried to configure the startup parameter vga=0x317, i have changed this to vga=0 to get vesa mode but that doesn't work, i have an wide screen monitor that supports 24 bit and 1360x768.
Did a clean install with 11.2 after being very impressed with the LiveCD. After installation process finished, laptop booted up and I had a green screen, no icons and a mouse cursor. REALLY liked the way the OS performed on the LIVECD and would like to give it a real shot.I can install Fedora 11, Ubuntu, Madriva and Mint Linux with no problem on the same Toshiba laptop.
View 9 Replies View Relatedeverytime I try to shutdown/reboot, it gets to the screen where it has the green/bold status messages on the side, but then it simply stops. The cursor doesn't blink, nothing happens...you could wait 10 minutes, and it would still be at that same screen. I don't know if I've described this well enough for anyone to understand, but I hope so! I don't have a camera, but if I did...I'd post a picture of where I mean...
But like I said, after getting to a certain, without actually shutting down, it simply stops and does absolutely nothing. This is rather inconvenient, and I'd like to find a solution to this if possible. EDIT: I'm sorry I didn't provide any hardware info, but I'm using Gnome...This didn't happen 100% of the time KDE like it does now though. (But it DID happen in KDE as well) I'm using OpenSUSE 11.2... I'll be back in a moment with hardware info, assuming it may aid in a solution.

I have tried two distros - Mandriva and OpenSuse. Both provide the same results, though Mandriva booted...but still the same problem, after installing blank screen comes up and nothing. Keyboard touch bad, mouse nothing happens. I would prefer openSuse but may have to switch.

Install Win7 64-Bit no issues, wiped and installed Linux and I cannot get past this blank screen. Installation works, no problem installed packages etc. When coming up on 1st boot, login - boom nothing? Searching the web and I suspect the Intel graphics are the problem but I'm not sure.
I bought this laptop to put Linux on it solely for a personal project of using Linux for a year. I'm an IT professional for 23 years and comfortable with CLI.
I built a new pc with an intel atom processor and 1Gb Ddr2 ram with on board sound and graphics. When i try to intal or boot live (from flash drive) The screen pops up asking boot or instal. Whether i choose either/or i recieve an error on my monitor saying input not supported. I got a similar error when i tried an older monitor. My current monitor is an aoc lcd screen (not sure of model no.)

I had some viruses as my program told me and in the end I had to restart my eee pc!Problem is now after it starts and you click on the log me in icon for the netbook it makes the nice hello sound, takes some time and then does the shut down (goodbye) sound. So basically the netbook booted already right? But I cant log myself in! What can I do?

The computor has been running 11.3 since it was realeased without problems other than jerky video. The computor will not boot it asks for the password but does not accept it, Although I can see the Home folder it does not mount. I have tried testdisk but although it sees the partions it cannot acess them.

This webcam does work with linux, it works with Ubuntu 10.04 Lucid and Linux Mint 9 Isadora but openSUSE 11.3 doesnt seem to like it. Information about webcam drivers seems to be missing now, I tried the drivers repo but no luck. Cheese freezes and WXcam comes up with a green screen with no video. This is a gateway product by my understanding but it seems to be linux compatible, especially with the Linux 2.6.34 kernel that both Ubuntu and openSUSE use right now. But for some reason its not quite clicking with openSUSE 11.3

dear, in centos / fedora, I can config to start a permanent vnc session by setting the /etc/sysconfig/vncserver file when the system starts. Is there any similar configuration in opensuse which give me a permanent session?

how do I get past this? What's going wrong here? I checked the md5sum of the iso and it matches up with the official one.
Edit: I know the flash drive isn't at fault, because I've used it as a live USB for 10.04 and several other distros.
I did something unknown and now I have no Green Gecko button on my bottom tool bar. I cannot pull up the program menus and I can't add it as a widget. I have tried rebooting, no luck. How do I replace the Green Gecko Widget?

i started the installation programme and it went through a couple of options then says it has to restart the laptop when i restarted i got this message before the bios screen and then the computer does nothing

View 1 Replies View RelatedI wanted to try out Ubuntu (I already have it on my laptop) so I used the Startup Disk Creator to put it on a USB stick so he could see if it worked on his laptop. I plugged the USB in and restarted the computer, and it went to a screen that said syslinux blah blah blah (bunch of copyright stuff) then "kernel image cannot be found" and it says "vesamenu cannot be found" and under all that it has the word "Boot:" with a cursor next to it to enter something. I figured I may have created the USB drive wrong, so I unplugged it but now whenever he starts his laptop, the same screen comes up and we cannot get past it. It comes up even when the USB stick isn't plugged in.
I went to the BIOS and looked at the startup options and the first option is the laptop's internal hard drive (which is running Windows 7), and whenever I try system recovery, it goes back to the same screen with the syslinux stuff and the cursor. What the hell happened? He can't do anything with his laptop now and I didn't even install anything. The boot order is correct...why is it not loading Windows 7?, otherwise I'm gonna have to pay to have his laptop fixed since this was my doing.
It happens like 50% of my Suse 11.2 startups, when I type in my password at login screen and hit enter, Gnome do not start, i can only see the green blank screen,or sometimes it start to show only my custom wallpaper and nothing more, when i try ctrl+alt+backspacex2 and login again everything seems to work fine, but what could be wrong ? is it a hardware issue ? Moreover, sometimes when I want to shutdown my laptop and click the shutdown button, suse do logout, but instead of turning off the laptop , it brings me to login screen, clicking the shutdown button at login screen makes my hdd lamp blink and thats all.

Now when I click Songbird, it tells me it's starting down in the Window List, but it never pops up. I've tried all three methods from here to install it afterwards... none of them I got to work. I however, desire the BOOTSPLASH. or whatever it is, of openSUSE 11.1. the green with white veins in the background, and a strip of black running horizontally across, with "openSUSE" written on it in white. i mean the one that masks the initial Text interface, the FIRST GUI you see after GRUB. The one that also shows when you power down. Is this a plausible endevour? I do have my 11.1 iso, in case it's stored as a theme in there.

After the login, when kde starts, the screen gets inverted, rotating 180 grades. The system performance is very slow when this happens. I tried to disable the KMS to use the default system driver, what worked. But with this option, I don't have the performance and resolution available with KMS.
View 6 Replies View RelatedI have used Universal USB Installer to extract the xubuntu 10.10 iso and install onto a flash drive. I would like to try a live version of xubuntu that boots from a flash drive. When attempting to boot from the flash drive, the screen effectively freezes after displaying the syslinux / ebios copyright message, with a flashing cursor.
Does anyone know a possible cause or solution? Information that may be useful: I am using a 4GB flash drive, formatted as FAT32. I formatted once using the Universal USB Installer, but some files were left on the drive, so I have reformatted it using the option provided by the Windows interface, (and reinstalled xubuntu.)
When I opt to install onto USB with a 2GB persistence file using Universal USB Installer, the installation processes hangs with a dialogue saying there are 0 seconds left to copy, until the dialogue is forcefully shut (and installation appears to be successful). When I select no persistence file, the process does not hang. (I am faced with the same aforementioned problem at boot time, regardless.)
I have not checked the md5sum (though I have no reason to suspect it will fail.) I have downloaded a simple programme which checks a single md5sum against a single file, although I am unsure which file I should check against in the case of xubuntu, and if the md5sum.txt file represents a single md5sum.
I am using Windows Vista on an old Toshiba Satellite. I am new to using linux, and am very unfamiliar with the the setup and installation procedure.
I installed Umbuntu (MythBuntu 11.04 as backend system) and initially when starting it just went to a blank screen (no prompt, nothing). After going through safe mode I was able to get to a prompt and into the UI in low graphic mode.After updating the graphic drivers (nvidea) to the latest and changing some grub options (GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT="acpi=off splash") when I restarted it went to the busybox initramfs prompt. I typed "exit" and the UI started up normally.
The next time I restarted it went through to a blank screen. I typed "exit" again and enter and the UI started up normally again (even though I couldn't see what I was typing at the time).While I was going through the recovery mode I do remember some messages about disk not found/mounted, when I googled it I found stuff about entering rootdelay=90 in menu.lst which doesn't exist anymore. Is there a similar option I can enter somewhere in 11.04?Also I'm new to Ubuntu (in fact any Linux distro as an admin), where would I find any log files that may help with finding the problem.
I am running 64bit Ubuntu and have just installed XBMC and the install has gone great so far. Easy to set up and configure and all my media now works. I have installed lircrc and my remote works when in XBMC.
I have created a file .lircrc in my home share and added the following

I just updated my netbook remix 9.10 to 10.04 and every time I boot up it freezes as soon as the login screen pops up. Before this said screen pops up I have the ability to move the cursor around freely, and if I mash the life out of enter I can get it to select my username, but freezes before the password entry bar has the chance to come up under it.

View 1 Replies View RelatedAfter a lot of headache and time I was finally able to get Ubuntu 11.04 64bit installed along side my Windows 7 64bit installation. The whole process was hindered by the screen resolution being really off, looked like this LINK (aspect ratio of (16:10) I believe it was). After much fiddling i was able to get the installation started hoping that in the end it would let me set the res. correctly once it was installed. About 75% of the way done it threw an error saying there was either a problem with the HDD or the CD, I know my HDD is fine, so I booted up windows and set up my USB thumb drive as the installation device, Unbootable.
My next attempt i hooked the laptop to my internet via cable and started the installation again, this time i found that I could set the res of the LiveCD (which was a pain in the neck) and this time Ubuntu installed and upgraded and seemed all sorts of happy! Once the PC rebooted and i selected to boot into Ubuntu, the(what i suppose is) login screen pops up but the resolution is messed up again and this time I can't navigate at all. I've tried just typing in my password and hitting enter as i can see that it is by default selecting my user name to login with.
