When i open my pc and load ubuntu 9.10 a black screen opens and i should write my user and then my password i was doing something in the terminal last time but i don't remember what how can i fix it ? i don't care if i lost data

View 1 Replies View Relatedi have tried to install Ubuntu 11.04 but everytime i try i get a black screen when the system starts up. i have tried to install via cd and the upgrade option.I am currently using Ubuntu 10.04 and this has no problems.I have also tried the esc key when i insert the disc and this brings the option to install but after this i get a black screen again.
View 9 Replies View RelatedNow I'm trying to run Ubuntu again. The problem started when I put Ubuntu to sleep, but instead it turned the screen black and hung without going into sleep (this is common for me). I had to cut its power, but afterwards it wouldn't boot.
I tried booting off old kernel and "recovery" ones, but that gives me an error and loads "ash" shell, which doesn't let me browse any of my files (no /home director to speak of).
I'm really at a loss. Is my only option to delete everything and reinstall? If I back-up my home directory, can I just copy/paste the contents into it once I install a new Ubuntu and have things more or less in working order?
I upgraded Fedora 10 to Fedora 11 via preupgrade. And now system succesfully boot, but Gnome doesn't starts (i think). There is only black screen and I can only write there.

View 4 Replies View RelatedI just downloade and burned it. I booted off of it. It starts to load, but then the screen quits (no signal). Does Ubuntu not support S-Video? Then I tried another computer with a normal monitor connection (blue monitor plug). And it got further than the other computer. But then it hung up eventually too. My burn was successful. Is anyone else having problems with Ubuntu 64 bit edition? (installation)
View 9 Replies View RelatedI'm running Ubuntu 11.04, using an nVidia graphics card. I have my TV hooked up to my computer and acting as a second monitor, using the Twinview option with the gpu. My monitor is set as the primary display, with the TV as secondary.
The problem I'm having is that when I turn my computer on, the main display is black, and all the load up information is output to the second display. Then, when I get to the log in screen, it is also on the second display.
when i get the boot loader screen i choose Ubuntu , and then i get to choose recovery mode or Normal mode , in either , i get some sort of a list , and then i Get a Black Screen , Nth ,But i hear a sound of May be Ubuntu starting ...so what can i do to see my Ubuntu ????is there is away for help , i just need to run Both my Original Reinstalled Win 7 64 bit ,

I booted up and it hung on the 'mounting file system', I left it for ages and eventually it goes to a black screen and prints out an error message, I can't type anything on my keyboard.

safe mode with no problems at all! The problem is there when I try to boot windows 7 normally. To be honest I only need windows for a project that uses MSQL server.
I was messing around with the screen orientation and thought it would be funny to orient it sideways. Big mistake The screen went black.I can force a shutdown, login and I get the same black screen. I tried hooking up an external monitor and the monitor showed no input so I'm guessing my laptop doesn't have that capability with Fedora.This is my main computer.
View 14 Replies View RelatedFew days after installing Ubunto 9.10, during installation of gstreamer, the installation utility got stuck, and with it the whole desktop icons. (I think the gstreamer has nothing to do with it). When I tried to execute some icon, like the terminal, it will not open. After restarting the computer, I get a tty1 login terminal and not the graphical one (tty7). When pressing Ctrl+Alt+F7, nothing happens. It switches to a black screen. "sudo startx", gives some error log. I already reinstalled the X-server, ubuntu desktop and other stuff.
What can be the problem? Is it related to my video card (nvidia 7600 GT)? I didn't install any nvidia specific driver. This happened to me earlier and I reinstalled Ubunto. I think maybe I should move to some other distribution.
I guess I messed around with my computer a little too much when I was bored. I tried installing compiz and emerald and my computer locked up. Rebooted and then it stays on a black screen. Rebooted and tried safe mode now. Removed emerald by command prompt to see if that would work and rebooted.

Have you had any such probs with ur installs. If so whats the cure. It clears after awhile and never had any probs with the old ubuntu OS.
View 2 Replies View Relatedi am fairly new to Ubuntu. i was using it fine for a month, but today, when i booted my computer up, it came up with a black screen instead of the normal purple ubuntu screen. the black screen had white text on it, and asked for my username and password. from there, it was a terminal prompt. i have been google searching for a while, and have tried typing "startx", "sudo apt-get install ubuntu-desktop", "sudo gdm", and i have also tryed uninstalling xorg, and reinstalling, and none of these things wanted to do anything for me.
View 4 Replies View RelatedI've been a happy Arch Linux user for years now. Recently, on my eee 1000he (an Atom netbook with intel GMA graphics) I've been seeing strange things. After it has been on for some time (usually hours), the screen starts to jitter, just for a fraction of a second, every now and then. After this has happened some times, the screen goes black (one time it went red). The backlight is still on and I can still ssh to the machine which reacts normal appart from the black screen. I can only regain the screen when rebooting. What could this mean? Is it hardware or software? X logs don't shown anything weird, where should I look? I haven't found anyone with the same problem on the net.
View 4 Replies View RelatedI've restarted a server a couple times, and during the boot process pings respond when it brings up eth0, but then when i get to the command line login screen, the pings die. once i log in and do a ./network start the pings respond again, so i'm guessing its dying or not set to start automatically maybe? View 2 Replies View RelatedHad 3 partitions on a hard disk. Booted vista & deleted the windows 7 partition & then expanded the vista partition into the windows 7 partition. Vista kept working but when i rebooted grub starts to load & gets an error 17. How do i recover?
Previously grub would come up & give me the choice of ubuntu or vista. If i selected vista i got the choice of vista or windows 7.
When I load XP in VirtualBox it starts off with the keyboard working. However, if I leave my computer for 10mins the Ubuntu computer/screensaver lock comes in. When I then go back to my VirtualBox I cannot select the CTRL-right to activate the keyboard. The mouse still works correctly but I cannot type anything.

Places>Computer> shows "CD drive" and "CD/DVD drive", however I have two old internal CD's, not just one.

The windows programs run through the PlayOnLinux [URL].
I have installed PlayOnLinux 3.8.8, and the game Call of Duty 4 (COD4).
When run it, the sound is fine but the black screen.
The video card drivers are upgraded, is NVidia GeForce 8600M GT.
My system is openSUSE 11.3 with KDE.
I have a bad problem with debian 5.0 . I have installed it all right with no fail or error and when it boots,i just see a black screen with nothing else. My graphic card : Nvidia 9500M gs. I tried ubuntu,fodero but both of them were same after installing debian (Before i didn't have this problem)
