I upgraded Fedora 10 to Fedora 11 via preupgrade. And now system succesfully boot, but Gnome doesn't starts (i think). There is only black screen and I can only write there.
View 14 RepliesYesterday I attempt to use update-manager to do a distribution update. all was going good. i went to the kitchen to get a coffee and returned to a black screen with no cursor. the install couldnot have finished as it was still downloading updates i believe.
on reboot gnome did not respond so my last resort was to use kde for the time being. by running update-manager through kde I successfully updated to ubuntu 10.10. After completion of the update i restarted and gnome still had a non respinsive black screen on login.
Kde is still working fine.
Or at least how can I completely reinstall gnome.
i have tried to install Ubuntu 11.04 but everytime i try i get a black screen when the system starts up. i have tried to install via cd and the upgrade option.I am currently using Ubuntu 10.04 and this has no problems.I have also tried the esc key when i insert the disc and this brings the option to install but after this i get a black screen again.

View 4 Replies View RelatedI upgraded my machine to F15. I was asked to reboot. From that point on, the system will not boot. I get to the blue screen with the 'egg', about 1/3 of the 'egg' turns white, then the screen goes black. No cursor, nothing.
I hit shift to get the Grub menu, tried booting my old kernel. Same result.
I tried burning a F15 live cd and booting that, but I get a desktop background with no mouse, no docks. It doesn't seem to respond to anything I do. I can boot it in the "basic graphics" mode, or whatever you call it, but I would rather not overwrite my entire hard drive with a fresh install.
I have seen references to some kind of recovery mode provided on the live cd that might repair my install without wiping my data, but I can't find it anywhere.
My hardware:
Dual core Atom D525
Intel NM10 chipset
I just updated to the new drivers. In my Xorg.0.log file, it doesn't show any errors. It just stop at a black screen. This might be a new bug with the binary drivers.

Big mistake The screen went black.I can force a shutdown, login and I get the same black screen. I tried hooking up an external monitor and the monitor showed no input so I'm guessing my laptop doesn't have that capability with Fedora.This is my main computer.
View 14 Replies View RelatedOlder machine here that I upgraded to 10.04 after a clean install of 9.10 some months ago. When booting into GNOME, the desktop image flashes on the screen and the second the bars on top and bottom try to appear the system boots out of the desktop and returns to the log on screen. I assume this is a crash of Xserver, but just guessing. Per another page I ran: lspci | grep VGAand returned:

I know - old machine Typing this from failsafe mode, would be great to hear from someone as to what I can do to get this working in normal mode again.
I've installed F12, updated to today. I've set it to boot to runlevel 3. That works. If I run startx, X starts - I see the mouse cursor and the blue/green background. But no panels. No desktop icons.
I tried switchdesk kde, then startx. Same thing. Except kde is running because if I right-click on the desktop, I get a kde dialog that allows me to start an app.
Tried switchdesk gnome. Same thing. Rebooted, same thing.
I'm under Kubuntu 10.04 and I upgraded kde from 4.4 to 4.5. via apt-get. After KDM login, I got a black screen with the mouse cursor visible and active.
I tried this :

KRunner (ALT+F2) doesn't open.
I have tried booting from 2 different Ubuntu CD's (10-04-01 and 10-10) and a Fedora CD.All 3 CD's do the same thing, in Ubuntu I just see the first screen (Keyboard/Battery on the bottom with the guy next to it) and then the screen goes black but the lights, that indicate there's a computer connected and transmitting info onto the screen, are still on.
I know the CD's aren't the problem because they work on 2 other computers I have.The CD drive isn't the problem because took it out of a working computer and that booted up fine with the CD's.I've restored BIOS to default settings.I've tried booting with 1 stick of ram at a time but still doesn't boot.I've left the computer on for 3 hours but nothing appeared on the screen and the lights never turned off. It was just a black screen, nothing on it, not even a blinking cursor.I know it's capable of booting up CD's because the Windows XP setup disc boots.
Here is the solution. (I don't know how to change the title of the original thread to indicate that the problem is solved, so I've started a new thread with a link. There must be an easier way!)
View 5 Replies View Related(Using Ver. 10.04-lucid lynx) This is because, at random, Gnome environment will have some kind of problem, leaving me with a black screen, like the terminal but not it, where I can enter my password and that's just about all. There seems to be no way to enter the graphical linux environment. I was forced to wipe the hard drive clean twice because of this and both times I reinstalled lucid lynx.

The initial bios stuff is still there and the GRUB loader text. Then darkness without There is one way to start up and getting screen (which I'm using now). If hitting ESC in grub loader, selecting recovery-mode, selecting re-configure monitor, selecting start up in graphics-safe mode (this session only) it'll work. Other combinations, such as re-configuration and normal reboot or just graphics safe-mode does not work.The only real error message I have obtained is the following:(EE) intel(0): ch701x not detected, got 29, from DVOI2C_E Slave 234Given as pop-up dialogue when going into recovery-mode.My laptop is a Compaq Pressaro M2000. I just installed Maverick on my HP tx1000. Jockey offered me two drivers for my NVidia Go 6150. I tried the recommended one--and it seemed to be working. It had a green light next to it in Jockey, Compiz worked, etc. Then I rebooted.
Except it didn't reboot--the disk thrashed for a while, and then I was met with a black screen. I tried recovery mode and got a bash prompt...which crashed when I ran `startx'. Then I tried Failsafe X, which did work. After some experimentation, I realized it was the Nvidia driver at fault, so I tried the not-recommended one, which didn't work, and now I've disabled both of them. But isn't there a proper driver for me to use? IIRC, I was using a restricted one with Lucid, and it was working all right.
Fun fact: The day before I installed Maverick, Windows 7 randomly decided to not boot all the way. It would show the splash screen, and then hang with a black screen too. But it works in Safe Mode. And had been working fine for a while beforehand. There must be demons in my graphics card.
I'm having a pretty serious problem, whenever I try to boot into Ubuntu the screen goes black, I see a flash of purple or violet and then i get a prompt asking for my login credentials, afterwards I'm stuck with a terminal trying to start the gui... I don't know what I'm doing wrong, fresh install tried to reboot after getting the display driversinstalled idk if that could be a problem. I tried to commands in the terminal already:

View 2 Replies View RelatedI'm running debian (AMD64 dist), and I recently upgraded via aptitude to KDE 4.3.4.After the upgrade I found that I could no longer start X (using startx from my user account).I am, however, able to launch kdm from a root command line and log in as a user to X this way (graphically).I want to run startx as a user and I cannot figure out where the hangup is. I've looked in my Xorg.0.log files comparing .old to current and nothing stands out. After I launch 'startx' the screen goes black and the computer waits. I can hit ctrl-alt-f2 and bring back the text-mode terminal screen; it's at a point where it looks like X is working. From there, I can control-c it and get back to the command prompt.
I'm thinking this is a software configuration thing but I don't know enough about how all the systems tie together to figure out where the problem is.
After applying upgrades to debian 8.2 on a lenovo yoga3 notebook and a reboot I am not able to login into my GNOME desktop. The login screen stays black. If I press the power button to suspend I can see the login screen with default background for ~1 second before it turns black again. What can I do to fix this issue? Is there a way to login via terminal and do a rollback? Can I use my home folder an personal settings if i reinstall debian and keep the /home partition?

i have an installation of wheezy 7.8 i think. i was facing difficulties in read of matroska video. therefore have decided to installer gstreamer1.0 wich should be resolve my problem. i have added the backports repository in apt sources list. after an apt-get update i launch apt-get install gstreamer1.0 . i have noticed it have starting downloading more file than it needs i concluded that it was a upgrade or something like because the kernel was also updated. after the the packet downloading it has started the installation with some errors related to LOCALE LCC. it has stopped and restarted some services wich is normal. i have closed all others apps and restarted. Here start the hell. after the restart i have passed the kde login screen and after BLACK SCREEN with mouse working.

What i have tried? i have rename the /home/jefcolbi/.cache and back it again, rename /home/jefcolbi/.kde and back it again. next i have tried to check the Xorg config file. i created a new one with X -configure, modified it to feet my system configuration this does not resolve the problem but add another the keyboard is not working in graphical mode.

I think many are having this problem...9.10 works on the PC , but NOT 10.4 LTS or 10.10 ...all I get a black screen on boot up, although it "sounds" like its working in the tower..,,, QUESTION!!...is there a simple download ANYWHERE that will fix this as I am only a newbie Linux end user with average PC skills.....also ...Will there continue to be security updates for (9.10) after this April 2011, or must I find a way to upgrade in order to have a secure Distribution ..I have a Compaq Presario SR1901WM with HDA Nvivia.
View 3 Replies View RelatedWas running Server 8.04 with graphical desktop - no problems. Wanted to upgrade to 10.04, so ran sudo do-release-upgrade --proposed
Upgrade was successful (although so much stuff scrolled by, it's hard to tell if something errored along the way).
Server rebooted and a dark maroon screen said 10.4 is booting, ntp service started etc. and a scrolling series of dots.
Then got a sky blue patterned login screen, so I logged in. Screen then went black, with a movable mouse pointer.
If I do Alt-Tab a panel pops up saying ** NO WINDOWS **
Using Ctrl-Alt-F1 (iirc) got me a command prompt, so I logged in there and ran: startx
This gives me the message:
Fatal server error: Server is already active for display 0 If this server is no longer running, remove /tmp/.X0-lock and start again
So checked runlevel (who -r) and that was set to 2. Changed /etc/init/rc-sysinit.conf so RUNLEVEL=5
Rebooted, logged in again, still got black screen + mouse, and **NO WINDOWS**. Logged into terminal and runlevel=5.
Also tried running dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xorg but that returns immediately without anything apparently happening(?).
how I can get my KDE graphical environment back up ?
all I wanted to get was the "rss-glx"-package as additional screensavers. I am not proud of the results:So I used the Synaptic tool, and since that time the gnome-screensaver shows a black screen instead of any GL-animation in the preview-windows (the small and the big one). The simple screensavers still work (e.g. the Gnome feets).I propably made it worse when trying to uninstall gnome-screensaver and installing xscreensaverxscreensaver crashed on each preview (if the screensaver was installed) and printed an "exited abnormally" (yellow lines on a black screen).Then I was trying to get the original state back - without any "rss-glx".Still not succeeding, the GL-screensavers show nothing except a black screen (e.g. AntSpotLight).So what do I have to do to get back the original state (or to run rss-glx)
View 3 Replies View Relatedi have installed Ubuntu 10.10 and played around a bit and have got it booting into cli instead of the login screen. gnome is my default desktop environment but i wish to run kde along side to play around with. When i boot into kde using startx kde (usualy just using startx) all i get is a mouse, black background and a terminal screen.
