Ubuntu / Apple :: 10.04 - X Starts But The Display Comes Up Blank
May 9, 2010
I recently installed Ubuntu on my Powerbook G4 1.6ghz 13". The install went fine along with the first boot off the harddrive. The problem came when I started the computer for the second time. X starts but the display comes up blank. To be sure I didn't mess up the install I reinstalled Ubuntu and installed all the updates and proprietary drivers as well as setup remote desktop options. I can now start the computer and get a remote desktop but nothing on the computer's display. I've tried to edit the xorg.conf but X has not created one. I'm at a loss of what to try next.

Today my system has started exhibiting a weird behavior. When KDE starts, I get stuck in a blank screen. Sometimes, KDE starts and shows the logon page, but then it gets stuck during logon: the disk icon is completely loaded, but the others are still blurred. I can dual-boot into windows on the same machine, and it also has problems. I have remote access to the machine, and I can even start X remotely, although it's sluggish. I have an nVidia 9600 card, which had been working just fine until today. I have tried updating to the last nVidia drivers from the PPA, but it didn't help.

I have tried two distros - Mandriva and OpenSuse. Both provide the same results, though Mandriva booted...but still the same problem, after installing blank screen comes up and nothing. Keyboard touch bad, mouse nothing happens. I would prefer openSuse but may have to switch.
Equipment:
Acer 7740 17" laptop
Intel i3-330M Chipset
4Gig DDR3 RAM 1066
Intel Integrated HD Video 128MB
Install Win7 64-Bit no issues, wiped and installed Linux and I cannot get past this blank screen. Installation works, no problem installed packages etc. When coming up on 1st boot, login - boom nothing? Searching the web and I suspect the Intel graphics are the problem but I'm not sure.
I bought this laptop to put Linux on it solely for a personal project of using Linux for a year. I'm an IT professional for 23 years and comfortable with CLI.

I installed Umbuntu (MythBuntu 11.04 as backend system) and initially when starting it just went to a blank screen (no prompt, nothing). After going through safe mode I was able to get to a prompt and into the UI in low graphic mode. After updating the graphic drivers (nvidea) to the latest and changing some grub options (GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT="acpi=off splash") when I restarted it went to the busybox initramfs prompt. I typed "exit" and the UI started up normally.
The next time I restarted it went through to a blank screen. I typed "exit" again and enter and the UI started up normally again (even though I couldn't see what I was typing at the time). While I was going through the recovery mode I do remember some messages about disk not found/mounted, when I googled it I found stuff about entering rootdelay=90 in menu.lst which doesn't exist anymore. Is there a similar option I can enter somewhere in 11.04?Also I'm new to Ubuntu (in fact any Linux distro as an admin), where would I find any log files that may help with finding the problem.

I'm running Ubuntu 11.04, using an nVidia graphics card. I have my TV hooked up to my computer and acting as a second monitor, using the Twinview option with the gpu. My monitor is set as the primary display, with the TV as secondary.
The problem I'm having is that when I turn my computer on, the main display is black, and all the load up information is output to the second display. Then, when I get to the log in screen, it is also on the second display.

I always get a blank black screen when during installation even when I select the "safe graphic mode". During installation, the i get some multi-colored straits at some point and then nothing, it returns to the black screen.
I even tried to partition my hard drive with Gparted and got the same blank black screen even with the "safe graphic mode" option.

I am running karmic on a MBP 5,2. When I close the lid, nothing happens. The screen does not blank, machine does not sleep... nothing. I thought I performed all the steps in the sticky, and I didn't see anything special regarding power management. The power management tool does not list any settings for lid closed.

I just purchased a new Mac Mini 2010 to replace my older Mac Mini 2006 Intel. The problem I am having is that when I boot Ubuntu from the MM 2010 CD-ROM the initial menu that allows you to select a language is displayed, but after that the screen goes blank and stays blank. I am using the HDMI port to DVI output and I am wonder if that could be a cause of the blank screen. Is there a boot command that I can use to allow Ubuntu to display with the HDMI port or other item I need to fix to get Ubuntu CD installer video display to work with my MM 2010?

I went to lock the screen when I got up from my computer. I came back and there was a black screen. I tried hitting different buttons nothing worked. I rebooted and still went right to black screen. I can get into recovery mode but I can't figure out what's wrong with the computer. Can someone give me a hint. My father is very good with ubuntu but he said that he would just reload the os on it. But I really don't want to go thru that process all over again.

I have been reading others experiences of similar Low-Display 800x600 minimal color issues on G4 and other PPC computers, Thought I had it close but still can't get it really gworking as it should, I believe it is all to do with the framebuffers (that don't exist and I don't know how to make these files and keep them on reboot. mine is a really old G3 with the Slot Load R128 Rage ATI graphics, 40 GB HDD, 256 MB RAM,740/750 processor.

I am running 9.10 on a HP Compaq. Every few days X will die. The screen goes blank and will not display anything. I have to SSH in, but even trying various commands like gdm restart does not help. I eventually have to reboot the box. Below is a snippet (hopefully not too large) of dmesg:
/dev/sr0 on /media/cdrom0 is a CDROM, but I dont think thats the issue.

This issue was resolved in Lucid and Maverick; now it's back... This happens after only 2-3 minutes, even when the screen saver is set to activate after 20 minutes. I believe this has something to do with ACPI power management.

All of sudden my Fedora 14 machine went to blank screen during startupprocess. I upgraded from 12 to 13 and then 14 last week and it worked fine for a week. I have Dell Optiplex 760 with builtin Intel Q43 video card. I have looked for the solution online, but it seems like it is driver issue. I couldn't find the compatible driver yet.

I am running Karmic (9.10) on my macbook air (2,1) and although many things work fine (I wrote about it here:[URL]) one of the last things that doesn't work is setting the screen brightness. The FN-F11/F12 combo does bring up the brightness adjustment notification window (top right) and I can change the setting, but it has no effect UNTILL I reboot or suspend to RAM and reboot.
A related issue is that the brightness doesn't automatically adjust to the surrounding brightness.

Today, just hurry the boot process up a few seconds, I manually selected the kernel to boot to. Everything went well and got to the point where I heard the bootup sound and then the screen went blank and my monitor on-switch went orange - indicating nothing to display.
If I pressed the delete key I could hear the sound made when there's nothing more to delete. I switched to one of the virtual terminals and the monitor switch went green but no display.
I rebooted and let the bootup process as normal and everything was OK. I repeated the initial bootup process, with the manual selection, and it went blank again. The odd thing is, I'm sure I've recently done this before and all was fine.

I just upgraded to Ubuntu 10.04 LTS from 9.10. After the upgrade process, I restarted and chose "Ubuntu, with [the current kernel]" and now I am greeted with a white screen with no login or boot splash. My processor is pegged according to the processor case light. My computer's specs are as follows: AMD Athlon X2 5200+, ATI Radeon X1300 Pro, 2GB DDR2 ram, Dell Socket AM2 Motherboard, and 250 GB 7200 RPM hard drive. I really need to get this computer to work.

I downloaded 5.4 DVD iso, burnt it to DVD and installed it, when booting up it goes through gives loads of green okays, then when going into the GUI (presumably) it shows a blank screen.
I did some googling and found out to run system-config-display, however when I run this the monitor goes blank and does not work, I have tried a few variations of setting the resolution etc. but nothing worked.

Today I installed all the updates that were associated with the 2.6.31-17 kernel upgrade on Ubuntu 9.10.It appears the update has broken my stock 17-inch Macbook Pro 5,2 because after restarting my screen is just black. I don't see the ReFit choice menu (I have OS X and Ubuntu installed), and even when I let the machine boot all the way into Mac OS X the screen just remains black. The apple logo on the back of the screen doesn't turn on at all.
I can see the keyboard backlights eventually come on (which is normal when you get to Mac OS X login prompt) - so its almost as if its booting but just wont talk to the display. When you press the brightness buttons you can faintly see the shade of black changing. What the heck has happened? I just paid a big load of money for this baby and I'm very sad now I love Ubuntu but this is ridiculous.

I have an Apple iBook (ancient I know) and whenever I boot from the Live CD (Kubuntu 10.10) it boots up in 800x600 (as far as I can tell that's what it is). This would be a problem however it simplely leaves a huge black column on the right side and has a partially duplicated desktop below it.
When I go to display settings it won't let me change to a higher resolution (1024x768 is what the iBook natively runs at).
This is an iBook G3.
