Ubuntu / Apple :: IMac Display - Screen Will Just Go Black When Boot From A Live CD

Nov 18, 2010

I've been installing Linux Mint with OSX on a bunch of iMacs, and its been working perfectly excpet for one of the iMacs. The screen will just go black when I boot from a live CD, but I can hear the login sound play. It's strange because all of the other iMac's run the live CD just fine. What could the problem be? I don't know what I can do to troubleshoot this problem.

Ubuntu / Apple :: IMac G3 Will Not Boot From Live CD?

Feb 21, 2010

I can't install any flavour of Ubuntu 9.10 onto my new iMac G3. Here are its specs:

iMac G3 New World (Indigo)
350MHz G3 Processor
192MB RAM
6GB Hard Drive
Slot Loader (CD only - not DVD)
Mac OS 10.3 Panther

The drive does work - I've played music from CDs on it, and it does allow me to view PDF files stored on data CDs. I can even view the Ubuntu CD through the Finder on the desktop. It just really doesn't want to boot from the CD.

I've tried multiple Linux distributions (all of them PPC compatible).

Ubuntu / Apple :: IMac G4 Will Not Boot From Live CD?

Aug 15, 2010

I presently have an iMac G4/700Mhz machine I want to try Ubuntu on, but I cannot get it to boot using the 10.04 PPC Live CD. I get to the boot prompt, and no matter what I type, the system halts when the screen clears and comes up, and each time it does so, it comes up different colors (I've seen green, red, yellow, and grey so far). I've tried the special boot arguments that apply to this system when you press the TAB key, and all of them end the same way, so I'm at a wee bit of a loss here.

Ubuntu / Apple :: Boot 10.4 Live CD On New IMac?

Sep 18, 2010

I'm trying to boot ubuntu10.4 live CD on my new iMac (iMac 11,2, core i3). The screen goes black at start of boot and stays black. The CD stops reading after a few minutes and that's that. Just to see what else doesn't work I tried ubuntu10.10 beta live DVD. That boots the splash screen - already better than 10.4 - and gives the language menu and the boot option. The boot starts and some text scrolls up the screen quickly. Then the screen goes black, etc. Tried to set boot option vga=771 - no good. Boot option nomodeset - no good. Booting suse11.3 live CD also gives scrolling text and a black screen. All these discs worked on my old Mac Mini Solo (2006). Looks like something's different about booting a live CD on the new iMacs. Anyone else trying this?

Ubuntu / Apple :: Screen On Display Entirely Black - External Monitor Never Becomes Active

Apr 3, 2011

Just did a fresh install of Natty B1 (previously had alpha 2).. I noticed this issue w/ A2, as well.. plugging in the exterminal monitor (via mini-displayport-to-vga connector) will do the following:

1) turn the screen on the laptop's display entirely black (but not turn it off).. i can move and see the mouse cursor.. but everything on the window appears to not rending or "painted" black..

2) external monitor never becomes active..

the only way to recover is to kill/restart X or reboot after disconnecting the extmon.. having extmon plugged in from boot produces the same results (and it doesn't seem to ever become active during boot up). sometimes this won't happen right away if i plug in the external monitor.. but opening the Monitors system prefs dialog will definitely cause (or detect displays) ,etc I waited to see if the issue would fix itself w/ the beta update, but it hasn't.. Any other 8,1 owners out there that can verify this issue? My (totally uninformed) guess is that it's due to differences in the display/gfx hardware and thunderbolt integration(?)

(I've seen a verification verifications of working-out-of-the-box.. but they were from 8,2 and 8,3 owners (which have discrete graphics cards))... If anyone's gotten this to work with some config stuff, I'd love to see that as well (since the wiki page for 8,1 says it works ootb). If someone could let me know where I should look to capture error output when the above issue occurs, that would be awesome.

Ubuntu / Apple :: 11.10 Live CD On IMac G5 Freezes?

Jun 2, 2011

I have a 20" 2.0 GHz iMac G5 Rev B and I'm trying to boot the live CD on it. I used to have a small ubuntu partition before on this computer, but I repartitioned it to OS X only when I left it as a family computer. I had no problems with it back then (I think it was 10.04). I've tried booting with several options. Booting by typing in live or live-powerpc64 get the computer to a blue screen with the top bar and cursor, before the cursor stops moving, the computer freezes, and the fans kick up to full. Trying with video=ofonly gets the new left bar thingy to show but freezes as soon as I try to click anything.

I've discovered that putting nomodeset in the kernel line will allow me to get so far as a command line, but I can't startx from here (I get "Screen(s) found, but none have a usable configuration."). I think my issues have something to do with the dual/switchable graphics in my laptop.

Ubuntu / Apple :: Screen Brightness On Aluminum 24 Inch Intel IMac

Sep 1, 2010

Screen brightness on aluminium 24 inch Intel iMac

I was just about to re-install Ubuntu to dual boot with OS X on my 24 inch aluminium Intel iMac. Then I remembered the reason I got rid of Ubuntu the last time... screen brightness.

It is a known fault of these machines - the default brightness is set far too high. Sometimes it hurts the eyes. There is an application I have to use with OS X called 'shades'.

If I instal Ubuntu in VirtualBox I can still use 'shades', but when I run it natively as a dual-boot os, I do not have access to the 'shades' app so the screen is far too bright to use for any reasonable length of time.

Is there a workaround for this, without having to do something on every log-in?

(I am using the 64 bit AMD version of Ubuntu.)

Ubuntu / Apple :: Boot Camp On IMac?

Feb 20, 2011

A while back, I used boot camp to dual boot OSX and Ubuntu on my iMac. It was fine, worked well - but I eventually took the partition off because there was some software corruption in OSX. I reinstalled OS X and now I want to dual boot Ubuntu. I can't! I created the partition - like last time, in Boot Camp, and I installed Ubuntu - I made sure to keep Grub on the Ubuntu partition only. But when I go to reboot (you know, after it finishes installing) I press option/alt and the Ubuntu partition does not show, only the Mac partition. Why is this?

ed: One thing that I remember is that I formatted the Ubuntu partition ext4 - I don't recall whether or not I used ext3 before, and do not know if that makes a difference.

Ubuntu Installation :: Black Screen On IMac G3 After Fresh Install Of Xubuntu 9.10?

Nov 28, 2010

I installed Xubuntu (Karmic 9.10) several times on an old iMac G3 with powerpc processor. Previously I had installed versions as 6.06 and 6.10 succesfully. But no luck this time. All installs were succesfull if alternate cd's were used.

The problem is that when i boot up i see the bootloader 'yaboot' and after that shortly the mouse logo from Xubuntu. After that the screen turns black and the indication light from the powerbutton turns from green to orange, this means no signal (i guess).

I assume that my screen resolution is wrong and cannot be displayed, the Mac uses 1024x768 if i am right.

My question is : How to access any configuration file to change resolution as I believe is the problem?

Edit: Perhaps there is a way to access command line to change config files.. ? Or using a live CD, but this computer is low on memory and has a hard time using live-CD's.

Ubuntu / Apple :: Lucid Will Not Boot After Install (iMac G4)

May 22, 2010

I installed Lucid PPC on a G4 iMac (lamp-style, 800 mhz) using the netinstall mini cd. The install environment booted and installed a base system without any problems. However, when trying to boot into the installed system, I get about a second of text after the yaboot screen, then darkness, then a full screen of bright red. Note that X is not installed, so the red screen is not an xorg problem. I've tried booting with "Linux nosplash video=ofonly", and "Linux single" but the problem occurs in both cases. I can use rescue mode on the cd and chroot into my system on the hard drive, but I'm not sure what steps to take from that point. It does seem to be a functional system when I'm chrooted, I can use apt etc.I don't want to give up on this installation and install karmic yet,

Ubuntu Installation :: Can't Get 10.4 Live CD For PPC To Work On Old 800 MHz Flat Screen IMac G4

May 20, 2010

I can't get the Ubuntu 10.4 Live CD for PPC to work on my old 800 MHz flat screen iMac G4. I believe it's supposed to work, but the installation dies with a magenta screen about a minute after selection of any boot option in the yaboot dialog.I tried all the sensible boot choices and options, all with the same result: some trundling of the CD reader, display of the messages related to the ramdisk, more trundling, then a blank magenta screen and no more trundling. The iMac becomes totally unresponsive: no more messages, can't enter any command shell. I get the impression (complicated story) that it begins to install the X server and then aborts.

This iMac has a PPC G4, 512 MB of working memory, and a GeForce2 MX video card with an nVIDIA chipset and 32 MB of video memory. There seems to be no hardware problem: OS-X 10.3 and OS-9 run just fine including wireless networking.

Debian Installation :: On IMac: Screen Goes All Black When Chose In Grub-selection List

May 20, 2011

I have installed Debian a few times now (and other distro's), so I'm fairly used to installing linux. I'm not used to installing it on Apple hardware (back in 2009 on my laptop I had some issues that were solved rather quickly, but that's about it). Now I'm installing Debian Squeeze on a new (well, bought today, but it is the previous model: iMac 11,2) desktop iMac.

Installing goes well (resizing partition, rEFIt, booting Debian 6.0.1a netinstall CD, installing packages etc.) I followed a tutorial [URL] to install grub explicitly with force after installing and running gptsync. Everything went according to the tutorial and I rebooted to be welcomed by rEFIt and then grub: perfect!

BUT when I chose Debian in the grub-selection list, I only see a few lines of starting the kernel, and then my screen goes all black. A few seconds later I hear a sound, and iirc it's the sound of gdm prompting to select a user. I cannot switch to a TTY and I have to use the power-button to shut the system down.

Hardware :: Create Boot CD For Booting External Disks On An Apple IMac?

Apr 2, 2010

Is it possible to create a boot CD to boot external volumes on an Apple iMac 7.1 (which has an older firmware version and cannot boot external disks, unlike the MacBook Pro 5.1 which can do it, at least with grub-legacy which is all I'll ever use until EFI boot becomes available). There is some promising stuff on www.pendrivelinux.com, and I'll try it, but the instructions are for Windows, and I am not sure how to translate the menu.lst entry to linux (I suppose it would have to be entered in the "automagic" section). Of course I don't want to create a bootable flash drive but to use my external volumes that already boot on the MacBook Pro without altering them, except for installing the ATI video driver (but I have no problem booting in low graphics mode).

Until karmic there was a trick to make the iMac mistake the external volume for an internal one (the root partition had to have the same UUID as the internal root partition), but this does not seem to work for lucid. Anyway this UUID trick is dirty and causes problems when you want to edit the internal partition (which is the point of the external boot - you get a customized maintenance environment that boots much faster than the CD).

Ubuntu / Apple :: IMac G4 "iLamp" Locks Up On Boot?

Feb 15, 2011

I've got a friend's iMac G4, 700Mhz i believe, aka iLampI couldn't install using the desktop version b/c of size restraints. So I finally got the alternate version installed. Now, at boot up, I get an option to choose b/w Linux and the CD. If I wait a while, it continues to load from yaboot. It will then continue again. But before anything else happens, it will lock up. All I see is a black screen. Pressing the caps lock key will not toggle the LED light.

Now, when I get to the yaboot prompt, I can interrupt it and try to boot the partition with different parameters. By the advice of other forum posts, I've tried typing "Linux 1", but the same thing happens (i dont get a command prompt, just a black screen). I've also tried to boot from the alternate CD again and do a rescue and a rescue-powerpc. No go.I've also tried booting into a Live CD (i think it was 10.04 desktop version). That booted into a black screen as well. The only thing I can think of is trying previous versions of ubuntu
