I have a 8.2 MBP with a 1680x1050 screen and a 6490M graphics card. I'm trying to boot from a usb stick ubuntu live. I'm able to get to the ubuntu menu, asking to install or start live boot, but when I select live boot I get a black screen( backlight is still on but entire screen is black). I've waited at that screen for quite some time with no luck.
View 2 RepliesI've been installing Linux Mint with OSX on a bunch of iMacs, and its been working perfectly excpet for one of the iMacs. The screen will just go black when I boot from a live CD, but I can hear the login sound play. It's strange because all of the other iMac's run the live CD just fine. What could the problem be? I don't know what I can do to troubleshoot this problem.

Letting Ubuntu (or any Linux) attempt to boot into a Live CD without changing any parameters results in a black screen, but with everything else working (for Ubuntu, that means the login sound is played). I've discovered that putting nomodeset in the kernel line will allow me to get so far as a command line, but I can't startx from here (I get "Screen(s) found, but none have a usable configuration."). I think my issues have something to do with the dual/switchable graphics in my laptop.

get Fedora 11 up and running?
When i boot the fedora image from a dvd i'm not being taken to the fedora live system screen, instead i see a bunch a words on a black screen (looks like DOS)...am i having compatibility issues or what? ive tried 32bit, 64bit versions as well as different desktops. does anyone have any ideas? my laptop is brand new: toshiba e205 running windows 7 ultimate..

Here's the situation:
Hardware
800 Mhz G4
256 MB RAM
15" LCD display

What Happened: After poking around on the forums some and reading through some of the wiki pages, I decided that 8.04 would be a good place to start, so I downloaded and burned an install disc. My first attempt booted almost perfectly, but I confused the "booting from the CD" with "installed Ubuntu" (Iknow, I know...), and promptly rebooted back into OS X.
Since then, I've been unable to successfully boot from the CD. Using the 8.04 disc, I'm prompted for what style of install I'd like, and I feebly type "live," the ramdisk loads, and then the screen goes blank, reads "loading" in the upper left for a second, the optical drive whirs for a bit, and then everything hangs on a black screen with a white cursor in the upper left. I thought I might just be impatient, so I let it sit overnight, but there was no change in the situation.
I know this isn't much information to work with. Is there a way to enable a more robust boot description? Something that will let me know what's going on when the screen goes blank and the optical drive whirs?
finally just got ubuntu to install on my emac a1002, I had to use the powerpc version. The install went fine, it restarted and loaded ubuntu, but after it loads goes to a blank black screen. And I imagine it sits there forever, yet I've only left if for about 5mins or so. The emac is from 2003, and has a 1ghz processor (Powerpc) and has 256mb ram.

I don't think it's hanging on anything, as I can hear sounds if I play around with the keyboard. Could this be something to do with the resolution being too high? If so, can anyone tell me how I go about changing this?

View 4 Replies View RelatedJust did a fresh install of Natty B1 (previously had alpha 2).. I noticed this issue w/ A2, as well.. plugging in the exterminal monitor (via mini-displayport-to-vga connector) will do the following:
1) turn the screen on the laptop's display entirely black (but not turn it off).. i can move and see the mouse cursor.. but everything on the window appears to not rending or "painted" black..
2) external monitor never becomes active..
the only way to recover is to kill/restart X or reboot after disconnecting the extmon.. having extmon plugged in from boot produces the same results (and it doesn't seem to ever become active during boot up). sometimes this won't happen right away if i plug in the external monitor.. but opening the Monitors system prefs dialog will definitely cause (or detect displays) ,etc I waited to see if the issue would fix itself w/ the beta update, but it hasn't.. Any other 8,1 owners out there that can verify this issue? My (totally uninformed) guess is that it's due to differences in the display/gfx hardware and thunderbolt integration(?)
(I've seen a verification verifications of working-out-of-the-box.. but they were from 8,2 and 8,3 owners (which have discrete graphics cards))... If anyone's gotten this to work with some config stuff, I'd love to see that as well (since the wiki page for 8,1 says it works ootb). If someone could let me know where I should look to capture error output when the above issue occurs, that would be awesome.
I'm trying to install Kunbuntu 10.0.4 on a late 2009 27" Core i7 iMac. Unfortunately the screen is always black while the CD/DVD installer seems to work. All firmware updates neede to the machine have been applied and it is non affected by the known problems of the late 2009 27" iMacs.
View 1 Replies View RelatedI want to make a clean install of 10.04 instead of just upgrading from Karmic.However when I run the boot cd I get the new Ubuntu boot up screen (with the five dots) but after a while I get a black screen and at the same time the cd stops running in the drive.The only thing I can do is pressing down the start button until my computer shuts down.I do get the menu to choose to run the live cd or make a new installation, but whatever I choose, I end up with the black screen.
I'm trying to install on an older IBM Thinkpad R50e, with 500 mb RAM so I figured that it was simply just too old to run the new ubuntu. The strange thing however is that the cd is actually running fine from within my Virtual Machine. This I don't get

I can't install any flavour of Ubuntu 9.10 onto my new iMac G3. Here are its specs:
iMac G3 New World (Indigo)
350MHz G3 Processor
192MB RAM
6GB Hard Drive
Slot Loader (CD only - not DVD)
Mac OS 10.3 Panther
The drive does work - I've played music from CDs on it, and it does allow me to view PDF files stored on data CDs. I can even view the Ubuntu CD through the Finder on the desktop. It just really doesn't want to boot from the CD.
I've tried multiple Linux distributions (all of them PPC compatible).
I presently have an iMac G4/700Mhz machine I want to try Ubuntu on, but I cannot get it to boot using the 10.04 PPC Live CD. I get to the boot prompt, and no matter what I type, the system halts when the screen clears and comes up, and each time it does so, it comes up different colors (I've seen green, red, yellow, and grey so far). I've tried the special boot arguments that apply to this system when you press the TAB key, and all of them end the same way, so I'm at a wee bit of a loss here.

The CD stops reading after a few minutes and that's that. Just to see what else doesn't work I tried ubuntu10.10 beta live DVD. That boots the splash screen - already better than 10.4 - and gives the language menu and the boot option. The boot starts and some text scrolls up the screen quickly. Then the screen goes black, etc. Tried to set boot option vga=771 - no good. Boot option nomodeset - no good. Booting suse11.3 live CD also gives scrolling text and a black screen. All these discs worked on my old Mac Mini Solo (2006). Looks like something's different about booting a live CD on the new iMacs. Anyone else trying this?
View 6 Replies View RelatedMy ubuntu desktop died yesterday. I rebooted my computer in like 1 month and after grub, the screen is all black and it stays there... forever. So I decided to see if the problem persists or not when I completely upgrade my ubuntu to the latest version. So I downloaded the latest ubuntu iso from the site, burned it, and booted from CD and I see several selections to choose from the menu list. The second one was "Install Ubuntu". What I'm worried about is I don't know whether selecting 'Install Ubuntu' will erase all my previous data, or there will be an option to upgrade Ubuntu without erasing all the data. Is it safe to install from the live disk? Will my data be safe? Is there any way to upgrade my Ubuntu on the HD to the latest Ubuntu from a live disk?
View 3 Replies View RelatedI have a serious problem! I downloaded and burnt Ubuntu 10.04 and then chose it as start up volume in Snow Leopard's start up disk preference dialogue and although Ubuntu runs successfully from the cd (I'm typing from it now) I can no longer boot into OS X at all.
I have tried all of the different short cuts at boot up to no avail, even trying 2 keyboards. It insists on looking for the Ubuntu disk and if it is not in the drive comes up with an error message stating that a system disk cannot be found.
Is there any kind of tool on Ubuntu that will let me change the start up disc/interact with the Mac's efi settings? I previously had refit installed but this disappeared just before I booted the cd, is it worth using the live cd?
I tried booting from a Tiger dvd but it wouldn't let me do so, it just returned me to the ominous "System disk not found" message.
Does anyone have any kind of idea? Perhaps some kind of shell script that will reinstall refit? I'm guessing that any kind of dvd designed for PC will prob boot, any kind of OS X recovery disk compatible with MBR available?

my setup is: Asus p5q-e,
4 gig of corsair dual ram,
ati 4850 graphics,
onboard audio.
ahci mode
win 7 installed on intel ssd, and xp on a samsung 320 gb sata 2,
i had this configuration running fine for 2 months without boot loaders,
on pc start up i choose from which hdd to boot from.
i installed ubuntu on the samsung drive where it was recognised fine, wiped it all and installed automatically.
pls let me know if there is anything i missed, and advice if possible in what to do.

I've got two laptops running Ubuntu. Both have had Lucid installed from the live cd. I have upgraded one of them to Maverick. Both distributions are running great after they boot up, but I haven't experienced any faster boot times with either distibution. Both boot to Bios and then the screen goes black with a blinking cursor in upper left corner of the screen. The black screen remains for 30 to 45 seconds and then I get the Ubuntu splash screen for maybe 5 seconds, and then desktop. Why am I not seeing faster boot times? I realize 45 to 60 seconds is good compared to other os's, but I anticipated much faster boot times. Shut down on the other hand is quite fast at maybe 5 to 10 seconds. Does anyone else get this black screen on boot? Seems like wasted time cause I can't tell what's going on during the time there is a black screen. This is not a real big deal breaker, as I don't reboot very often, but I just wonder why bootup isn't faster.
