Ubuntu :: GRUB Command Line Appears On Start Up. YIKES?
Feb 14, 2010I just booted into Linux and the Update Manager prompted me to restart. After the restart the GRUB interface I expect to see is no longer there and now it is just a command line that says press tab for more options.I have not got a clue with shell language as I have had no time to learn it as of yet. Do I need to uninstall and reinstall Linux or is there a command that can be typed that boots up the operating system.Even better is there something I can do that can return me to seeing the interface like I was used to.

I had installed driver for my ATI graphic card, as it was written in Fedora guide, then when I rebooted the system the bars and icons appeared with strange, changed colours (purple, green, etc). I've read that this happened because of the bad drivers, so I tried to fix it. Unfortunatelly because I'm Linux newbie and I'm also very nervous I deleted (using Fedora software manager) everything connectedtalyst from my system.Now when I try to start my computer, grub starts in text mode.My question is:What can I do? Dec 21, 2010I recently removed Winblows Vista from my laptop and replaced it with Kubuntu 10.10 (I left the recovery partition on there, just in case). When I turn on the computer, the GRUB menu appears, I press enter, then a little flashing underscore appears on the screen in the top left hand corner. After a few seconds, the Kubuntu logo appears and I can log in.But yesterday I replace Kubuntu with Ubuntu 10.10. The Boot process is the same, but the little flashing underscore in the top left hand corner flashes for about 10 seconds longer then Kubuntu 10.10 did, and then a few paragraphs of text appears for a few seconds, then I am logged in automatically.Is this "unusual" boot process anything to worry about, or am I just being a noob.

May 17, 2010I've restarted a server a couple times, and during the boot process pings respond when it brings up eth0, but then when i get to the command line login screen, the pings die. once i log in and do a ./network start the pings respond again, so i'm guessing its dying or not set to start automatically maybe? Dec 7, 2010I am unable to boot my laptop in the usual way. The fedora emblem in the centre of the screen appears and starts to turn from white to dark blue in the usual way. When it is almost complete it stops.
In order to make the machine boot i hit escape and a message says leaving interactive startup mode. At this point the machine continues to start up.
When i do manage to get it to boot i get the following message repeated many times:
I should also add... The laptop will not close down, once i click switch off the screen turns blue and displays the fedora emblem in the centre. At the top right text says "Shutting Down" but at this point the system hangs.

May 6, 2011After certain system-wide changes, like kernels updates, I obtain grub prompt on restart. However, if I put the hard drive into another computer (b), it boots up fine. Since, however, I use the present computer (a) regularly, I only use b to purge and reinstall grub using the chroot method. However, doing so every time is time consuming; and I cannot change anything in the defaults and run update-grub without obtaining a grub prompt on restart. How do I fix this?

I loaded GRUB, and now when I reboot it goes straight into the 'grub>' command line. Initially GRUB had the root as (hd0,2), whereas the boot is on (hd0,1)...(hd0,2) is my '/home' partition, and (hd0,1) is my '/' partition... So on a bootup I ran...

Jun 9, 2010I have a problem with streaming from .mov from Appl.com. As most of you must know, the iPhone 4 was announced in WWDC 10 on Monday. I am interested in it and I wanted to watch the keynote (available at different resolution:[URL]... When I click on low-large resolutions, Totem opens up and I get this error message:

GstDecodeBin2: This appears to be a text file When I click the HD , totem opens, and video starts streaming, but it is of a terrible quality (so much for Apple's "perfect presentation" rep). I'm not so sure this is so much a problem of Ubuntu as of my network connection. I have heard that "live" streams are not of that great quality because the video player is prioritizing to deliver live continuous stream, I can understand that. But I want quality video. So, can any of you Linux guru's (I am a newbie) tell me if this is a problem with Ubuntu (not proper mov codecs?), my connection? Apple?
Also, as I understand it, if I were to download the stream, it would have full quality because the player isn't focusing on delivering it live. Is there any app/Firefox extension/hack/terminal code, etc.
OpenSUSE :: Text Sporadically Appears In Reverse Order / When Typing In Kile
Apr 6, 2011I'm curious as to whether anyone else has experienced this, and has an explanation. I'm running Kile 2.0.85 under openSUSE 11.3 32-bit on a Lenovo X61. Twice in the past couple of days I've had the bizarre experience that, upon a sudden burst of typing my text has appeared in Kile in reverse order.

Fedora Installation :: 10 - Automatic Boot In 10 Seconds - All Text Is Jumbled Up And Distorted And Everything Appears Frozen
Jan 14, 2009Im trying to install Fedora 10 on to my HP Pavilion a340a (full product specifications: [url] ), i boot from the cd and it says "Automatic boot in 10 seconds..." etc, i get past that screen and am then at a screen with 2 shades of blue and a white bar moving at the bottem of the screen towards the words "Fedora 10", on the next screen, the log on screen, all the text is jumbled up and distorted, and everything appears frozen, except that i can move the mouse. I am not sure what the problem is but i know its not the cd because after having problems with hp pc i decided to try it on my Acer Extensa 2300 laptop (1.5ghz, 1.2gb ram, 40gb hdd, 32mb intel integrated graphics) and that installed fine, without a problem. This has led me to beleive that Fedora may not be liking the intel graphics on my HP Pavilion, and i dont know why. i really want to use Fedora 10 on my desktop. I should mention that i want to dual boot Windows XP and Fedora 10 on Pavilion, windows is already installed.

Jul 11, 2011I've been using Linux for about a week, now, and yesterday I finally got my audio to work. Before shutting-down yesterday, I installed some more audio-plugins. When I started-up my computer today, there were errors in the console-text that appears while the Debian Linux OS is loading. When I got to the desktop, I tried to play music, but no sound came-out. So, I tried to uninstall the plugins I installed yesterday and restarted. I got similar errors in the console-text as earlier. When my desktop loaded, I still had no sound. I had several problems with the entire sound architecture of the computer. I made some more changes in the application-download-manager-thingy and restarted and I no longer got the errors at boot-time.
Unfortunately, I still have absolutely no sound, and it appears as if ALSA is effectively dead. My soundcards are Rocketfish (PCI) and Realtek HD Audio (Integrated). I got Realtek to work yesterday with OSS.
Another problem is that WINE doesn't work, with the exception of WINE's default programs. I've been trying to get this thing to work for at least four days now, and I've made absolutely no progress...
Also, after fighting with it for a few days, I finally managed to get the internet to work, but Linux still thinks that I'm offline. It's really weird. This one's not so much of a problem as it is annoying. In addition, if I click-on the network-manager-thingy, it says that none of my connections have ever been used. Odd.

Sep 11, 2010I installed Lucid Lynx on my laptop a couple of months ago and for the most part everything was working fine. However, just recently the computer doesn't seem to be booting up at all. I start up the machine and then a black screen appears with the text: init: ureadahead main process (306) terminated with status 5 the (#) is different in some boot-ups
And the computer just hangs there. typing anything doesn't seem to help at all. I press enter and a new line just appears. I've left it there for hours and still no login screen.

Feb 10, 2011I'm having an issue where, after having just installed Xubuntu, the GRUB menu fails to appear when the USB stick I used to install it is not plugged in. Without it, pressing ESC brings me to the Windows 7 (OS dual-booting with) special menu.Is this standard behavior?Is the default timeout zero? Can I adjust GRUB to display for a long enough time to make a decision?

May 11, 2010Two days ago I decided to migrate from Fedora to Ubuntu 10.04. On the Ubuntu install I chose to format the entire disk as I do not want a dual boot system. I have three disks and have set the bios to boot from dvd, then main disk, then 2nd disk, then any other bootable drive and coming from a working Fedora I know I have my "slaves" and "Master" pin positions on the disks set correctly.
When I try to boot the fresh install of Ubuntu I do not see any menu options, no boot image nothing, I get taken immediately to a grub command window and I dont know how to fix things from there. I have tried to fix things by booting into the "try before you 'buy'" thing on the installation cd and I can see that Ubuntu has been installed on the main disk, but all in all Im stuck.

Aug 23, 2010I am currently running 9.10 ubuntu (gnome). I have a dual core intel chip at 3.00 ghz. My mobo is an ASUS P5ND2-SLI. My mobo will support up to 8gb of ram. Now, as we all know, 32-bit os/kernel will only support like 3.2gb, and 64-bit like 4gb. I'd like to install a pae kernel so I can get the most from my mobo, but honestly, I don't have a clue where to start looking for a pae kernel. I'd like to be able to select it from the list that already appears after the grub loads, and if I like it, be able to remove the rest from the list, or just make it default.
Question, in CPU-G, it says my architecture is i686. I don't know if that's the os/distro, or the kernel itself. it also lists the GCC version as 4.4.1 and Xorg as 1.6.4. my current kernel is Linux 2.6.31-22-generic. Again, I'm trying to find a pae kernel, but I don't know if my os/distro will make a difference, if the architecture is the kernel or os itself. I am still fairly new to ubuntu, and I must say, I've made the switch completely from windows.. which blows...

Oct 21, 2010My dell machine has the following: A raid 0 SAS config with Windows 7 installed in one partition, and ubuntu in the other partition. Then two seperate sata hdd. The raid drive is set as first boot, and Windows views it as disk 0 and boots just fine. When I installed ubuntu 10.04 on the second partition, it viewed the disk as sdc. And when booting off the raid drive,im not given a grub menu to choose ubuntu orwin 7,windows 7 boots all on its own.

Jan 9, 2011Last night I rebooted my desktop and it failed as in it just kept resetting after the bios post...so I changed my boot drive which gave me a "no bootable drive found" error(this confirms hdd fault) thee I booted a live cd and checked my partitions
They are as follows
sda1 - boot(ntfs)
sda2 - windows(ntfs)
sda3 - swap
sda4 - ubuntu(ext4)
I tried to mount sda4 to reinstall grub but it failed...says the partition is corrupt sda2 has no problems and I made a backup for it now the problem is how do I perform a disk check on sda4 and how do I get my system up and running again? I dont want to reinstall!
