Ubuntu :: Slow Startup 3 Minutes From Bootloader To Desktop?

Ever since a standard update a couple weeks ago I've had a myriad of problems, the biggest one though being boot time. Here's what happens when I turn on the machine: From bootloader (splash) to kernel loader (blinking cursor) = 50 sec. Kernel loader to splashscreen = 20 sec. Splashscreen to login prompt = 55 sec.login prompt to keyboard working = 26 sec. (wireless, wired works right away) Logging in to Desktop = 25 sec. 176 secs = ALMOST 3 MINUTES UNTIL I'M IN THE DESKTOP!!
That's worse than Vista. I've tried a number of things. For the Bios I read disabling floppy helps. I tried installing bootchart to see what's going on but it won't load save the .png file..? I installed bum and disabled some services. I tried profiling in grub... Nothing has made anything any better.
No idea why it takes so long for my wireless keyboard to start working. I'm really not sure where to start here since it's loading so slow at every point of the startup process.

I'm an Ubuntu user since Jaunty, and I've always upgraded my system (NOT fresh install). Everything went fine, but yesterday I upgraded to Lucid. My only concern -for now- deals with startup time. I'm a desktop user (Core2@3GHz) so I think I should boot in less than 10 seconds. Anyway, boot time is 30 seconds - not too much, but there is definetly something wrong with tools I don't know (ureadahead, plymouth, etc.). Attached is my bootchart: can anyone explain me what's wrong?
Also, I don't even see a plymouth Ubuntu themed bootsplash: I only see a blank (black) screen standing for seconds, then I see the bootsplash for less then half a second, then GDM appears :S Not crucial -I know- but how can I fix it? (I don't know if it's related, but I can see the animation at shutdown)Finally, GNOME desktop takes too long to load. I don't know why, but there are 15/30 seconds in between login sound and a usable desktop (with panels and icons, I mean).Please help me, I don't want to do a fresh install. Boot speed is not a dial with desktops - I know - but it can be a symptom that my system is a bit a messy (and I don't like it, since I installed Jaunty less then 1 year ago). (!Forgot! i just installed Ubuntu from an ISO about a year old and of course i updated it to the latest version and when i get that screen at startup where i have a choice of which version to load i get something like this: My current version, memtest, an old installation of Ubuntu and some really old versions. The problem is i also have Windows7 and Vista installed(vista really needs to go) but i don't have either of them as a choice in the bootloader. How do i get it back? Also before the update i had it on the list.

My Linux system shows a current time with the date command that is 12-14 minutes behind the time shown by my DirecTV satellite receiver or my wife's MS Vista system. ntpd is running; it's polling several ntp servers; ntpstat claims that the system time is accurate to 11ms.

I have a Dell Vostro 200. Have been running Ubuntu on it for 18 months - no probs. Recently it became very slow to boot. 5-10 minutes before Ubuntu startup screen appears. Have installed Ubuntu 10.10 (on a reformatted hard drive) today. No change. It's fairly certain to be a hardware problem but I don't know where to start.

Just installed yesterday - and I love it so far except my wireless turns on for about 5 minutes, then disconnects.
In order to get internet back I have to either restart or uncheck "Enable Networking" and then recheck it.
I will try to provide as much information, but like I said I am new to Ubuntu and there is some things that are completely different from what I'm used to on Windows:
Wireless Adapter: Netgear RangeMax Next Wireless PCI Adapter WN311B
Additional Driver its Using: Broadcom STA wireless driver

A couple of months ago I decided to use the wubi installer to install ubuntu on my comp in a dual boot configuration. Yesterday, I clean installed my windows drive with windows 7.I have my windows install on drive C: and my wubi install in Drive D: ( they are on completely different hard disks ), so the ubuntu virtual disks are still intact and the wubildr.mbr is still there.
The bootloader screen at startup doesn't appear at all! I tried to manually boot into the D: hard drive but come up with a error 17 grub loading error, which was because the grub loader doesn't recognize the file system on the drive (ntfs). is there a way to somehow recover the wubi installation?
EDIT: I did some research on the net, apparently if I backup up the root.disk file, erase everything else on the drive, install wubi again and overwrite the root.disk file with the backed up one I should be able to restore my previous ubuntu installation! However, I don't want try something until I'm certain that it would work.

After one of the updates (the same day as the kernel was updated) my Startup Theme has been changed from standard SUSE light-green to a dark SUSE EDUCATION.
I'm not talking about GDM logon (this is OK) and not about Bootloader screen (also OK).
I meant a progress of the SUSE loading.
I have Open SUSE 11.1 with GNOME and some software from EDUCATION repo but not a Education release.

I am using Debian sid 4.1.3-1 and when i shutdown the system it takes 3 - 5 minutes before actually shutdown, there is only a black screen until the hdd led start flashing and after that the system finally shutdown. The weird part is that sometimes it happen in less than 30 seconds , how can i figure out where the problem is ?

I made a clean install of Ubunto 10.10 on my Compaq Presarion F700, nVida graphics, AMD Turion 64x2.Installation was fine.When I boot, it takes a lot of time, 5 minutes or more.Also, after the system loads I get those applet errors I've attached. Sometimes I get all the applet errors and sometimes it get few of them.I tried several configs of "GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT" but still no luck.

I'm running Fedora 12 on an Acer Aspire One with KDE. The built-in wireless works without a problem EVERYWHERE except at work. It's a shared wireless connection using WPA/WPA2 security.I can connect but it's "hit-and-miss" if I can do anything with it. Somedays it works well for a few minutes then has a period of inactivity - then slow - randomly receives...It worked flawlessly when the computer was running Windows7 no one else has connectivity issues but I'm the only one using Linux.

I've upgraded to 10.04 I have had a few small problems, for one, when the desktop locks after the predetermined 10 minutes or so, upon reconnection my mouse no longer works. This is a laptop and I use a usb mouse now, which occasionally will not work unless a unplug and replug. Secondly, when the desktop locks it disconnects the network, never used to do that.

I've been using Fedora 5 for a few years and have never had a problem with it. Recently I upgraded to Fedora 14 and have run into a problem with the desktop freezing a few minutes after it comes up. I can move the mouse pointer around but nothing happens when I click on any icon. This happens with Gnome as well as KDE. I haven't tried Xfce. I think I read somewhere that the freezing is a problem with my video chip which is an SiS located on the motherboard. Is there a way to fix this problem?

Being a former user of Fedora, i decided I'd like to give Ubuntu a try and install so i could switch from a windows environment for ruby on rails development.I downloaded the 10.10 ISO and burned the image to a DVD-RW (a cheap one) at 4xI'm deployed in afghanistan right now, and the only decent internet connection i have is in my office (i work in the network administration/operations office as a NETOPS NCO) and even then my downloads rarely exceed 50kbps. I also don't really have the best pick when it comes to writable media, i'm stuck with imation "plus" cd-r's and dvd-rw's.
After i burned the image to disc, i deleted the iso from my computer since i'm genereally not suppossed to keep personal files on work computers.When i boot to the disc it takes about 45 minutes on average to load into the live environment to do the install or try ubuntu, if i select try ubuntu it's another 10 minutes before it's done loading.The install is even slower, generally takes several hours to complete the install, once the install is complete and i select ubuntu in grub, i get a { DRDY ERR } ru When it tries to load ubuntu and kicks me back into the shell. Nothing appears to be wrong with my hard drive, checkdisk finds nothing.

Is there any option to hibernate desktop computer (on AC power) automatically after staying idol for say.. 30 minutes?In System>Preferences>Power Management there is a option to Put computer to sleep when inactive for minutes. But no option to automatic hibernate.

I did a clean install of Ubuntu 11.04 64bit and the start up time is abnormally slow. If I start up the computer and don't press anything, the start up time is 30 minutes but it usually doesn't start up at all. It just boots into a purple screen, no splash, then it sits there and the computer doesn't have any loading lights flashing.
I had a similar problem with 10.10, but I assumed it would go away when I did a clean install of 11.04.
I can't get a read out of what's going wrong because when I press Esc it doesn't display anything, though weirdly it can sometimes get the start up process moving. I have also found that pressing enter really fast can sometimes help and something that seems completely oxymoronic, if I press the power button while it's starting up that can make it work, but nothing works every time.

An other general question,
I have installed ubuntu the same day on 2 PCs, my laptop with an athlon 64 x2 and 4Gb of RAM DDR3 and my very old PC, athlon XP2400 with 1Gb of DDR2 memory (if i remember well)
It starts in 20 seconde on the old PC and around 1 minute on my laptop, honestly it bugs me, any ideas why it is so slow on my laptop? I do have a 2 seconds for grubs, but still...

I've installed Ubuntu 10.04 on external HDD. Everything works fine except for slow startup.
It takes at least 2-3 mins to first show a blinking cursor when booting from USB HDD to start ubuntu. After that it starts up within a minute or two?
what can be done to speed up to boot to Ubuntu from USB HDD?

I'm using the xfce4 desktop and I removed the default screensaver. The screen goes dim after 10 minutes and I was wanting to know if there is a config file where I can adjust the time.
Searching synaptic for "screensaver" shows xdg-utils installed which has xdg-sreensaver but I'm not sure if that is really the program that is dimming the screen. Anyway, I couldn't find a way to change the amount of time that it takes to do so.

when I move the mouse to the top left it shows the 4 desktops. But I have switched it to 2 desktops, plus I also undid the screen edge section in personnel settings. How do I turn this ANNOYING feature off, as I have the tradition menu there & makes life difficult. It locks the desktop to reenter the password after 5 minutes. I turned the screen-saver off & unchecked the lock desktop setting in there also. I tried to search for these, but ever time I did it would tell me it was to generic of a search.

I installed Ubuntu 10.04 as virtual machine and now there is slight problem When I turn on machine I see VM bios but then VM stops and cursor (underscore) starts blinking. I waits like this for 2 minutes and then proceeds normally. There might be VM bios seen again. Since here, no slowness is noticed. It shuts down really fast
I'm using VMware workstation 7.0 and VMplayer 3.0.1, hard disk type used is SCSI.

I am running 9.10 on my compaq laptop. I tried linux a couple years ago and was not impressed with it's operation on this machine (wifi didn't work, pain in the butt to make it work) but I just installed 9.10 and to my surprise, everything on this machine seems to work now automatically!
One minor annoyance though, when I boot my machine and the gnome desktop loads, it takes about 1 minute until the wireless finds and connects to my router. Granted, my SSID is set to not broadcast but I set ubuntu to find it as a hidden network and it does in fact work, just takes more time than usual to find and connect. Normally with windows, when it loaded, my wifi was present and connected immediately.

After several upgrades (from 8.xx) I noticed Gnome terminal took about 4 seconds to open an window and another 4 seconds to give me a prompt. This is excruciating when blasting out CLI in dozens of terminals ssh'd into dozens of machines. Tabs were no different.
Fix was: Comment out anything in ~/.bashrc that references xterm. BOOM less than 1s total to prompt.
If it's faster than I can get my mouse hand back to the keyboard to start blasting CLI, it's good enough
