Fedora :: Play High Resolution Videos - Appears To Slow Then Becomes Choppy
May 2, 2010
I'm having issues playing HD videos ( some with 720p level, much more apparent with 1080p level one) The video appears to slow then becomes choppy, becoming de synced from the audio that carries on as normal. This occurs with both VLC player and XBMC, though the latter is better. My specs: Fedora 12 3.2 Ghz P4 processor 1Gig ram Radeon 9800 xt gfx card (I couldn't get the 9.3 ati driver to work)
Pentium 4, 512MB RAM, GeForce2 MX/MX 400 When my machine ran Windows XP, I was able to watch full screen videos on Hulu, etc. with no problem. Now my machine is running Ubuntu (Koala). I'm using Firefox with the most recent Adobe Plugin (and I've made sure there are no other flash players installed). Streaming video (at low to medium resolution) is pretty choppy but still watchable most of the time. It is not watchable when played full screen or with high resolution. When I download the .flv file and play it through VLC, everything is smooth. Are there any tricks I can try to get the video running more smoothly, like it did before? (Disabling desktop effects made no difference.) Should I just get some more RAM? (I realize my RAM is low, but it didn't seem to effect my video watching before.)
Im trying to play some videos with vlc but they are too choppy, I guess my comp is too slow. They are something like 1700x1000 h.264. What can I re-encode these too to maintain good quality but increase playback speed? If possible, an ffmpeg command to do this would be awesome.
Running ubuntu 9.10 on an hp pavilion 2000 laptop, with 2.5GB of ram and a dual core (i think). Works at perfect speed with everything, except when I'm tyring to watch a flash video which slows everything down and gets choppy, especially when in full screen. From looking around online I see some people blaming adobe and some people blaming NVidia drivers. Get the impression the problem is a bit of both.
Funny thing is it worked a lot better with the drivers that installed automatically with the ubuntu install, soon as I put the updated nvidia drivers on it started screwing up. how I go back to those default drivers? Tried unchecking the drivers listed in Hardware Drivers, but when I restarted was stuck in very low resolution, so I'm guessing that's not the same as the drivers used after installing the OS.
My last laptop was replaced (I gave it to my step-dad, his laptop broke and I bought myself a new one).
I am running Squeeze (as I was on my other laptop) and everything is fine except for the games. On my other laptop games like OpenArena and Warzone 2100 ran perfectly fine, but on this laptop, they are impossible to play. The game will open, but everything is so slow and choppy that it takes a couple of minutes to even move the cursor to the exit game buttons.
My current laptop is an HP ProBook4525s with the current specs:
AMD Athlon Dual-Core P340 2.2 GHz processor 2GB DDR3 RAM ATI Mobility Radeon HD 4250 Graphics Card
I'm not sure what other information to put here, I've tried searching how to fix this and most people say to lower the resolution and details for the games but that doesn't work, heck, even Tux Kart is too slow to play!
When I installed squeeze I was informed that I didn't have the rtl8168d-2.fw firmware for my laptop, I'm not sure if that helps here at all (can't seem to find what it is for, the only things that google gives me are very technical with fixes that involve re-compiling the kernel).
I've been playing around with Damn Small Linux 4.4.10 on my Dell Inspiron 3000 laptop for quite a while now, and this is the first time I've been downright stumped. To make a long story short, I'm trying to play 480p video on a machine with a 233 MHz Pentium processor, 112 MB of ram, and a Neomagic MagicGraph 128XD graphics card (NM2160). Crazy? Maybe, but I don't think so. I'm using MPlayer set to Xv mode with the XFree86 4.3.0 server, and so far, I've been able to get it to play 360p mpegs with minimal stuttering. However, MPlayer crashes with 480p. This is because the 128XD only has 2 MB of memory, which, after the 1024x768x16 screen takes its share, doesn't leave enough room for a 640x480 overlay.
The creators of MPlayer are aware of this limitation, and suggest adding the following line to my XF86Config file: Option "OverlayMem" "829440"
As I understand it, this is supposed to extend the video card's frame buffer into system memory, thus allowing the higher resolution video to play. However, it doesn't work, based on this output from my XFree86 log file: cannot reserve 829440 bytes for overlay...
Some other suspicious-looking lines from the log file:
I can watch dvds and videos (avi, mpg, etc) with mplayer with no problem (indicating to me that the video drivers are working properly). However, any "online" videos (....., etc) are CRAZY choppy. Probably about 1 fps. It is like this with both chrome and firefox.
Been using Maverick on my Dell Studio XPS for many months without issue. About a week or two ago, compiz has been acting funny and using a lot of cpu time, making everything "choppy," especially after resuming from suspend. I've googled and searched the forum, but all the related posts seem to be several years old.I tried selecting the previous kernel but it didn't help. Was there a bad update to compiz or ati graphics?
i want to be able to convert videos into mp4 videos of resolution 320*240 and frame rate 25ps so that i will be able to play them in my phone..any video converter that can do this job for me?
I'm using rdesktop to remotely access a winxp box from F14. However I'm not getting high resolution. Please help me to get high resolution. The machine is at the same lan and no bandwidth problem here.
I am unable to play the aforementioned videos. I know for certain mplayer2 supports the 10-bit encode, but whenever I try to play, only a second of audio plays with no video. Instead of video, I get an "Unsupported PixelFormat 72" error. I updated my FFmpeg libraries to 0.8 after that, however nothing has changed and I still get the error. I am currently running Fedora 15.
I have a ton of .avi files. Ever since my last ubuntu online update, they can't play at full screen even though they played fine last week. I tried reinstalling mplayer. No difference. Same problem with xine.
They freeze for about 1/2 second at at time and chop their way along. Not even viewable. But, they look fine in mini-mode.
I have 4 gb ddr3, a quad core, 2.83 gzh intel and an ati 4850 / 512 mb video card. CPU on gkrellm shows < 10%. I think I still have the proprietary ati drivers because I can still move my applications around the screen instantaneously. I have tried xv, gl and gl2 under mplayer -> prefs -> video. All are the same.
Everything works perfectly if I reboot to xp. Where does one begin to debug this?
I've just noticed that unrar is suddenly taking minutes to extract instead of seconds.
I can remember if its recently been updated, but I've uninstalled and reinstalled it and the version is: unrar.x86_64 0:3.7.8-3.fc10
I've found a few Ubuntu posts about it on Google, but in true Ubuntu fashion nobody has any answers!
What's odd is that when I unrar a file from (Nautilus or "unrar x *.rar") it takes say 4mins, then if I do it again it takes 15secs, like as if its caching somewhere.
I am running ubuntu on my netbook and use vlc media player, for some reason when I play 720p videos they get choppy and freeze constantly, is there a way around this or the videocard that comes with the netbook is having problems supporting it ?
When I play 720p videos they lag on my machine. Can I play them without any lags? The config is in my signature. I'm using GNOME & tried to play 720p videos in Totem & MPlayer but the video lagged in both of them.
I'm trying to get mplayer to play videos in ASCII, but I get an error... I don't know why. It works fine on my desktop, but my laptop is outputting an error...
This is the command:
Code: mplayer -vo aa video.flv
This is the error I get:
Quote:
MPlayer SVN-r29800-4.4.2 (C) 2000-2009 MPlayer Team mplayer: could not connect to socket mplayer: No such file or directory Failed to open LIRC support. You will not be able to use your remote control.
I downloaded a video in .m4v format and I only use TOTEM to watch videos.
When the player start the video, totem look for by Quicktime demuxer, then it finds gstreamer-plugins-good.i686 to install. I click the "Install" button, but after it show that all packages are plugin already installed.
when i try to play a video, from internet it is showing the message 'Either javascript turned off or download and install latest adobe flash player'. But eventhough I downloaded and installed adobe flash player I am unable to play any video and still it is giving the above message. what is the reason?
I installed Fedora 10 on a Toshiba Laptop, where I had been successfully running Ubuntu for over a year. The newest iteration of Ubuntu was giving me problems, and the press was saying that Fedora 10 was pretty good, so I tried it.
Fedora 10 froze after any application was loaded. I couldnt correct it. I installed Fedora 9, and am no longer having that problem. However, I cant run any multimedia items on the computer. Particularly videos, including wmv, mpeg, or rm formats. This was not a problem in Ubuntu. I can't find any player or codec that will allow me to play these videos on Fedora 9. Can anyone suggest a solution for this?
I was browsing my folder with lots of images, after finished i close nautilus and i notice that my computer became slow, so i'll check it with system monitor and had found that nautilus are using almost 100mb of ram (opening 4 tabs). I'm not sure if this was normal or not because i try to reopen the same folder with pcmanfm and it only consumes less than 20mb of ram (opening 4 tabs). here's the screenshot from system monitor .
I have an old Aureal Vortex 2 (by Diamond Multimedia) installed in my system (C2Q @3.4GHz, P35 motherboard), along with the on-board audio. I'm using my PCI sound card with my headphones and running everything else off of the onboard audio. Since it seems to have better sound, I would use it a lot more, but it skips like crazy whenever I try to play sound through ALSA. It sounds like something is sporadically dropping audio frames. The onboard audio works fine with ALSA.
I'm running Kubuntu 10.10 (2.6.35-25, gcc 4.4.5). I think it worked fine with earlier software, but I can't remember for sure. I've tried mplayer and kaffeine (xine backend). When using mplayer, the experimental openal works perfectly, but the advanced options for kaffeine are pitiful. I'm looking at switching video players (probably xbmc or a frontend for mplayer), but I assume I won't be able to completely avoid ALSA. I've done a quick search on google, but if there was anything useful, it was choked out by decade old discussions on getting the card to work at all.

Whenever I play flash video or a video in VLC the pictures seems "choppy" and slow as if it was laggy. What could be causing this? I am guessing its a video issue? Maybe something todo with refresh rates and stuff like that.
Streamed videos on various Web sites are slow and choppy for me. The problem seems to be a cross-browser issue, today I did an informal test of various sites I frequently use on both Mozilla Firefox and Chrome. The results of my informal test are below, and as you can see they are mostly the same for both Firefox and Chrome.
Google Chrome- You tube-- no problems once video loads, but loading is slow Daily show-- very slow loading, sound ok, video extremely slow, choppy, unwatchable ESPN--slow to load, sound ok, picture is very slow, choppy eHOW--slow to load, sound ok, picture is very slow, choppy
Mozilla Firefox You tube-- no problems but sometimes slow loading Daily show-- a little slow loading but sound and picture ok ESPN--sound ok but picture very choppy eHOW--slow to load, sound ok, picture is very slow, choppy
I've just upgraded from a wonderfully working v.9.10 to v.10.04 so I can install Flash and allow video to work. Apparently I can't install Flash into this older version. The performance is now unusably slow and windows move around desktop in a very limited way and cascading menus lag. I did all updates before upgrading as suggested. (The machine is a Toshiba Tecra A4)
I am having hard time playing a high definition video file (.mp4), the video initially plays fine, but after 5 mins, it starts to skip and stutter, (I use Movie Player with some codes that Ubuntu installed when I first tried to play file) I have a Dell XPS M1330 Intel Core Duo @2.20 GHz with 4 GB RAM.
I've had this problem on a few flash games (a couple of EA's sports management games on Facebook, and the Pokemon Dream World.) When I first use them everything's fine, but as I continue coming back to them, they seem to run a little slower each time. Ultimately in the case of the former two it got so bad that they were unusual.
Why is this happening? If they were slow from the start I could understood, but what could be making them go wrong on repeated plays?
I'm on 32 bit Kubuntu Lucid, firefox is my browser, and it's the official flash plugin.
I've just installed F12 64bit on my notebook. Everything works great. Only problem I'm having at the mo is my WLAN is slow at DNS resolution. On wired it works fine. I know it's not my access point as it is part if my router and I've rebooted it a few times. My other wireless notebook (Windows 7, Intel 3945ABG) doesn't have the same issue, and this notebook didn't when on Windows 7. I'm using OpenDNS as my forwarders. When I open a URL in Firefox (3.5.5) it opens the site immediately on wired. On wireless it will sit for 3-4 seconds before opening the site saying looking up .................. Once on the site browsing behaves normally.Anyone else having similar issues?
I have a dell latitude with intel i7 nvidia NVS 3100M and screen 1920x1080 resolution, using KDE 4.4 stable suse, well with high resolution monitor I found some problem usng kde:
1- I can change the font dimension by system settings but if I bigger the font the dimension of Kmunu doesn't change so the result is big font in small container, ugly and difficult to use
2- I can change the font dimensions in KDM splashscreen but the window where username and password is shown doesn't change, result is big unreadeable font in a small case
3- I cannot change the tabs and theyr font dimensions in chromium and firefox, result very small tabs
4- Icons in system tray and Kmenu and other icons remains always small even if I bigger the panel
