View 1 Replies View RelatedThe hard drive is accessed every few seconds with OpenSUSE and when it is there is a click sound when it is first accessed. I have other distros which dont make the clicking sound when they access the hard drive. I need to prevent opensuse from making the click sound when it does whatever it's doing. Im not even sure what it's doing or what settings to change, and most importantly how do i make it not click? Maybe i could copy settings over from another distro if i knew which settings to replace.

View 1 Replies View RelatedI did an installation of SUSE 11.2 on a new SCSI hard drive. Keeping the old hard drive separate. I remembered there was some info on the old hard drive I wanted.
I added this to the system and mounted a partition. I then copied the data over. Then I umounted the partition rebooted the machine and removed the hard drive. However the machine will now not boot without this hard drive even though its not mounted. Not sure what the error message im given means I think it could be trying to fchk it.Do I need to do something more like remove /dev/sdd ?
I have installed Fedora 14 along with Libre Office along with some other applications so I am learning slowly, re-learning really. However I am having a difficult time understanding partitioning. I would like to make another partition for Windoze. I also cannot get a USB mouse to work. I have run some commands to gather disk info I will refrain from list it here as it is a lot of data. At least until asked to do so. What I have run so far is fdisk -l, df, blkid, & cat fstab.

E.g Instead of keeping 1,5TB partition, create 5x300MB and keep different data in different partitions? Logically hard drive will spend less time on finding data in smaller partition then in bigger one, right? Is there any statistics for performance vs size?
View 6 Replies View RelatedI have only known about Linux software for the past couple of weeks. I want to install Ubuntu 10.10 on an older desktop I have so I can become more familiar with it. I am average in knowladge about Windows OS and MS-DOS. I tried to install Ubuntu and I get an error message about the harddrive. The CD I am booting with will load on my other PC with Windows XP on it. I have only let it run on it long enough to verify that it is bootable.
I have made a floppy boot disc following the instructions on another Linux site about Ubuntu. I have also tried to boot my alternate PC with the floppy and it boots up. The harddrive on my working PC is a Maxtor 40gb formatted with NTFS file system. The harddrive in the older desktop is a Western Digital 80GB WD800LB-55DNA0.It worked fine with Windows XP on it. I also made a Western Digital DATA Lifeguard for DOS floppy and it boots with it.
It's pretty much as simple as that. I am simply wondering if anyone knows of a tutorial of some kind or can explain how to partition around, in order to exclude bad data blocks on a busted hard drive. This is on a computer I just set up to run Karmic Koala. On another forum someone mentioned that there is a way to do this, and that is the only way, to my knowledge to "fix" said hard drive.On a complete side note, does anyone know if an Intel 965 is supposed to work with Karmic out of the box, if you will? I haven't gotten a chance to check it specifically for this, and there seems to be no mention of this chipset with Karmic on these forums.

How full is too full before partitioning will mess up your file system? I've partitioned before but it was only after the OS was installed, so only about %5 of the drive is being used. I read that 90% or more is too much. My friend claims it doesn't matter, and you can repartition even if the drive is 95%+ full.

I have a new white-box X2 system that I will replace the dead Dell with. The X2 (AMD) does not have a hard-drive (HDD) so, I will simply put the SATA hard-drive into the PC.

My macbook pro stopped booting yesterday due to some file system corruption in the hard drive. I am able to access this drive through a linux live cd which I am using now but when I go to some folders it says "Could not enter folder /media/Macintosh HD/..." Trying to install on an older x86 box.Problem is that when detecting my hard drive, Fedora 12 recognizes it as a sda hard drive instead of hda hard drive. I have no SCSI connected to my computer what so ever. It's an old fashion PATA Western Digital hard drive.If I proceed with the install, Fedora 12 only installs 200MB of the OS from the first CD only. No options for additional software or anything.

I have a customers' HP laptop that I've been doing work on. The HP came with Vista Home Premium pre-installed and the system was infected with the insidious Vista Antivirus 2010 virus.Well, after doing some registry cleaning I was able to get rid of that virus, but I suggested to the customers to check out Ubuntu, which they agreed to do.Here's my problem:
The HP has a recovery drive, which I formatted to make room for some of the pictures, documents and music they wanted to retain.I'm in the process of installing Ubuntu 9.10 and don't want to erase the recovery partition D:, which is labeled as /dev/sda2in the prepare disk space portion of the setup.I've moved to specify partition manually, but I'm uncertain as to how to configure this. When I installed Ubuntu on my own system, I just deleted Windows and used the entire disk space, so this is something new to me
I dont want to wipe the whole drive, and i don't want to delete only particular files. I want to completely destroy all data in free space.I've found some articles about secure-delete package for linux that would allow erasing freespace with the command 'sfill,' but I can't find it in the repositories nor through google. View 2 Replies View RelatedMy version of linux has a bunch of GUI icons on the left hand side of the screen (vertical). Most are links to programs.You click the GUI icon and the program opens. When I mount my internal hard drive it adds a GUI icon for the drive. The problem is when I click on this new GUI icon it automatically loads K3b and gives an error message instead of giving me a list of what is on my drive. I deleted the program K3b and tried un-mounting then re-mounting the drive. I then tried the new GUI icon for the drive and now it automatically opens Dragon Player.
View 1 Replies View RelatedI am trying to Install Open Suse 11.3 (burned as an ISO DVD) along with existing Win 2008 R2 OS. When I try to boot from the DVD it just logs in to Win2008 though boot from CD/DVD is enabled in the boot sequence. So i tried to mount the ISO and run from Windows ! BUT I get an error before installation starts telling that Win2008 R2 is not supported in open suse installer! Is there anything I can do to overcome this and install/retain both OS? In fact I am even trying to c hange my win2008 from R2 to Enterprise to see if I can overcome the problem!

I can access them by navigating Places>Computer>"Drive_Name" but it would be more convenient. I was able to access them before, but something has apparently changed..
