OpenSUSE Install :: Move SUSE Hard Drive To New PC?

Feb 26, 2010

I came in this morning only to find that the Intel Core2 hyperthreading Dell machine is dead. It appears the processor is fried.

I have a new white-box X2 system that I will replace the dead Dell with. The X2 (AMD) does not have a hard-drive (HDD) so, I will simply put the SATA hard-drive into the PC.

Some of you may know how to do this, but I don't know where to begin after I get the Hard-drive in. (I know how to move a Windows configuration from one PC to another and handle it as it begins to blue screen (BSOD), but I don't have a clue with Linux)

This system was built with GRUB. At the very least, I expect the GRUB boot managet to surface on the display. But, what next....

I was testing an OpenSuse setup as a server. Nothing fancy and NO applications added. The only customization was the MB's LAN card and the display was set at 1024x768. I had 2 users, root and myself. What would you do? Is there some boot time options that I should follow?

Software :: Gparted - Move Xp Install To A Bigger Hard Drive

Aug 25, 2010

I wonder if anyone can help me. A little background, I wanted to move my xp install to a bigger hard drive. I used Saikee's method and worked fine (as usual). My machine was a dual boot system, the xp partition was with little space so I get rid of my vista install, deleted its partition. That went fine also. Rebooted directly to XP.The problem is as follows:

a) In order to increase the size of my xp partition (old machine, athlon64 1gb of RAM) I moved my data partition to the left in order to have unallocated space near the xp partition. That was successful, I rebooted and everything was fine.

b) I run again Gparted and increased the size of the partition. Gparted told me the process was successfully applied. I rebooted.

c) after post I get the following error "error reading disk, press ctr-alt-del". I did it like five times and I get the same message.

d) With my xp install disk I tried fixboot and fixmbr and nothing changed

Since I have the original hd, I did it again, and the same thing happened after resizing xp partition, before the resizing process I was able to boot normally. I used Gparted live cd v 0.6.2 and as far as I recall I left "adjust to mib" option

General :: Move Smaller Hard Drive To Partition On A Larger Hard Drive?

Mar 16, 2010

My parents bought a new hard drive for a laptop that I've owned for several years. It's much larger than the current one, so I plan on splitting it up to dual boot it with Ubuntu.I have no problem with partitioning a drive (I always keep a LiveCD handy), but my question is this: how can I go about moving the existing partition to the new drive? This is a laptop, so I can't simply plug the new drive into another slot.

Also, even if I manage to move it, will Windows still work on the new drive in a larger partition? I've had this laptop for quite a while, and I've lost the recovery discs that came with it a long time ago. I also have a lot of software without CDs to reinstall them with. This makes not reinstalling Windows a high priority.

OpenSUSE Hardware :: Installation Of SUSE 11.2 On A New SCSI Hard Drive?

Jan 22, 2010

I did an installation of SUSE 11.2 on a new SCSI hard drive. Keeping the old hard drive separate. I remembered there was some info on the old hard drive I wanted.

I added this to the system and mounted a partition. I then copied the data over. Then I umounted the partition rebooted the machine and removed the hard drive. However the machine will now not boot without this hard drive even though its not mounted. Not sure what the error message im given means I think it could be trying to fchk it.Do I need to do something more like remove /dev/sdd ?

Ubuntu :: Move Installation To New Hard Drive

Mar 2, 2010

The HDD on which I currently have my Ubuntu partition(s) (as well as a Windows partition) is dying on me (non-zero bad sector count, with warning pop-ups from Ubuntu). I have already ordered a replacement hard drive*, but I was wondering if there is a simple way to transfer the contents of my current hard drive to my new hard drive in such a way that the new one will be a fully functional replacement (e.g. so that everything will boot and run properly on the new hard drive). Which is a different size (bigger) than the current drive.

OpenSUSE Install :: Installing SUSE On Old Box Without DVD Drive?

Feb 1, 2010

I've ordered and received the beautiful 4 disk set for release 11.2 that came on DVD. Like so many Linux users I would like to load it on an older Windows XP box without DVD drive. Haven't seen this release offered on CD's. I've been able to copy it via network to a file on the box, but have no idea which files belong on which CD - I assume it will take 7 or 8 disks like many of the older releases. Don't want to buy a DVD drive for the old box .

SUSE :: Possible To Install OpenSUSE On A USB Flash Drive?

May 12, 2009

I want to install OpenSUSE on a netbook I have that's currently running Mandriva.
I know often with a distro you can run the LiveCD/Live USB version from a USB Flash Drive. I understand maybe I can do that but want I want to do is do an actual install. Is this possible?
I assume I'd need to download the distro to my netbook under Mandriva and then after do an install and choose the USB Flash Drive after inserted as the hard drive to install to. Then when I boot up the computer I'd just choose the USB Drive as the bootup drive.
Is this possible though? Would it damage my Mandriva install? Like I said I know I can use the USB Flash Drive likely as a bootup/Live CD type of solution but since I will be using it semi-regularly and saving data at times I'd like to use it simply like another hard drive. Is this possible?

Ubuntu :: Move /home To Larger Hard Drive?

Jun 19, 2011

I'm sure that this is posted somewhere but I have not been able to find the right search terms. I have a Dell Vostro 1700 which has 2 physical hard drives. I installed Natty to the 1st drive and during the install I used the entire 2nd drive as /home. I would like to upgrade the 2nd drive to a larger faster drive. I have the new drive in a USB enclosure so that I can access both drives. I'm pretty sure I need to boot from the CD to do this. Then I need to copy all files unmount the small drive then shut down, install the larger drive and have the system recognize it as /home. I am just starting to creep out of N00B stage and don't want to screw this up.

General :: Move Photos From Hard Drive To DVD Using Mandriva Spring 2008

Jun 6, 2011

This is the equivilent of a DJ going into the"dusty records bin"to play an old song.I've got a hard drive that's left over from a Mandriva Spring 2008 computer and I need to copy the photos off it to a DVD and move them to a computer running Ubuntu.I can't seem to get the Ubuntu computer to access what's on the Mandriva drive, so I've loaded Mandriva Spring 2008 on another computer.

I've accessed the photos I need easily enough, but can't copy them to a storage medium so I can move them to the other computer. I've tried two USB devices, an external DVD drive and a flash drive and can't just copy (or drag 'n drop) the files to the other devices. This evening I may try a portable hard drive, again with a USB connection, and see if that works.

If there's a fool-proof way to do this by using a terminal, I'll try that. I haven't been able to devote enough time to Linux to familiarize myself with terminal commands. Or, if there's a program that will run under Mandriva Spring 2008 that will let me accomplish the transfer, I'll try that as well.

OpenSUSE Install :: Unplug Windows Hard Drive While OpenSUSE Installs?

Jun 14, 2010

I want to dual boot openSUSE 11.2 and Windows 7. I already have Windows 7 installed but I have encountered multiple issues in the past with trying to make dual boots. Usually when I install Linux, GRUB decides it wants to go into world domination mode, and "breaks" my Windows installation. I have reason to believe this is because the distros I use come with legacy GRUB, (v0.97) and for some odd reason it lacks commands such as "update-grub" etc. This means I cannot add Windows 7 to the boot menu without going into extreme complications, which have NEVER, I repeat NEVER succeeded. When I boot the Windows drive directly, I get some error about GRUB not finding the device, and it puts me into a grub rescue command line. Now I am no expert in this field at all, but wouldn't that mean that GRUB wrote itself to the MBR of...oh I don't know, ALL of my hard drives? I really want to install openSUSE 11.2, but from bad experience I am really put off as I know that it ships with legacy GRUB v0.97.I am also running Fedora 13 at the moment, I have quite an experimental dual boot running..been trying to get GRUB 2 for hours now, it is definitely there but no commands work, "upgrade-grub-from-legacy" and "update-grub" return with command not found. I've heard this is just a bug but can anybody confirm that there will definitely be a way for me to "fix" my windows installation after it gets "broken" by GRUB?Second idea, unplug my windows hard drive while openSUSE installs?

OpenSUSE Install :: How To Fix The Hard Drive To /dev/sdax

Mar 14, 2011

I've got a weird bug sinds I've updated to 11.4. On boot, the main hard drive isn't recognized as /dev/sda but it changes from time to time (probably according to other removable medias plugged in or not). It has been sdb, sde... but not sda anymore.

The trouble is that it boots and then it tries to find /dev/sda2 (the root partition). As it doesn't find it asks me sether he should take "SAMSUNG...whathever...-part2". Answering Yes solves the problem. But then, if I change in Grub the /dev/sde2, it still keeps changing of name. How could I have my hard drive back to /dev/sda2 ?

My /etc/fstab:

Code:

/dev/disk/by-id/ata-SAMSUNG_SP2004C_S07GJ1UYB03169-part1 swap swap defaults 0 0
/dev/disk/by-id/ata-SAMSUNG_SP2004C_S07GJ1UYB03169-part2 / ext4 acl,user_xattr 1 1
