My mac osx hard drive does not boot anymore and I would like to get my important files off before I reformat the hard drive. I have run into a bit of an obstacle -- there seems to be some permissions setting that are barring me from accessing the files I need to. I can see the Machintosh HD and can access some files. How do I change permissions for the entire drive and all it's directories?
View 13 RepliesI'm running Opensuse 11.2 and am using a couple of USB hard drives to store large data. One of these drives is formatted with FAT32 and one with NTFS. When I plug-in a USB device KDE4 shows me a little pop-up asking what I want to do with it, I select to open it in Dolphin which of course automatically mounts it.
My question is what if I want to change some of the mount options - is this possible without reverting to manual mounting? And second question is what system does it use to automount - Fedora, Debian and Ubuntu are all deprecating HAL in favour of pure udev, is this the case in Opensuse too?

I am running Linux Mint on my primary hard drive, and I would like to access some folders I have on my second hard drive, which has Windows XP installed on it. However, whenever I try to use these folders, I am greeted with the error message, "The file is not marked as executable." While I know how to set files as executable whenever I am using folders on my Linux drive, whenever I try to set such permissions on my XP folders, I can't seem to make it work. The files revert to their former status, and I'm told that I don't have permission. Should I set the files as sharable from within XP, so that they aren't marked as read-only? Or is there another solution I've missed?

I've tried chown -R kuier /home/kuiper/file Then chgrp -R users /home/kuiper/file But it still doesn't change permissions. I've also tried editing /etc/group and adding my name to plugdev group. nothing seems to be working?

I put Fedora-14-x86_64-Live-Desktop.iso in the root directory of the FAT32 partition D: (sda5) then extracted isolinux from this ISO, and put it on D: I followed the isolinux.cfg file, and wrote a menu.lst as follows:

I have a problem installing of centOS 5.6 from live CD.
I cannot see any option to install centOS 5.6 from live CD to hard drive on the desktop. Can anybody provide me with the steps for this.
I own a Lacie Network Space (1) which has recently given up the ghost - I looked into getting data recovered from it and it turns out it would cost around 500quid!! After doing some research I've found out that the drive runs linux - SO, I have bought myself a HDD cradle, Downloaded an Ubuntu Live CD, taken the drive out of the network space and mounted it in Ubuntu via USB. All good up til now, I've managed to get the majority of my data off except one folder - my music folder. It has quite a deep file structure (which maybe the issue) but essentially the permissions for the top folder have a padlock and a small cross - this doesn't allow me to even read the files to copy them off. You know the great thing about having a debian system is that you have to reinstall so rarely you miss all the new changes that happen in the system until you have to do something like install a new piece of software and realize that fstab has been turned into spaghetti and you no longer have the slightest idea what is going on.I just got a new 1TB USB2 drive to use for backups. I plugged in it and it was recognized fine but it was formatted in NTFS which I didn't particularly want so I reformatted it as ext4FS. It automounts fine but only with all permissions set to root. I tried doing a direct chmod on the drive but that wasn't recognized. Where in the hodgepodge of HAL settings and whatnot do I set it to make the drive user accessible and mount to somewhere other than /media/disk?
View 1 Replies View RelatedI've been installing/tweaking F12, and I've found something that I can't say I've ever seen or expected to find before: the contents of my ~/Documents folder has lost its permissions and ownership info. I restored it from a backup last night/this morning, and I've rebooted a few times since then. Other folders from the backup are OK, just Documents.I don't know what my options are. I could try to blow it away and restore it, but that doesn't answer what caused it. If there's a "relabel" or something, that might help... though I've never had to do it before. Could it be that after these two-and-some-change years, my hard drive is giving out? Good thing I have a recent backup... but it'd be a shame to lose all my work getting F12 to work again.

I have a new white-box X2 system that I will replace the dead Dell with. The X2 (AMD) does not have a hard-drive (HDD) so, I will simply put the SATA hard-drive into the PC.

I was testing an OpenSuse setup as a server. Nothing fancy and NO applications added. The only customization was the MB's LAN card and the display was set at 1024x768. I had 2 users, root and myself. What would you do? Is there some boot time options that I should follow?
My macbook pro stopped booting yesterday due to some file system corruption in the hard drive. I am able to access this drive through a linux live cd which I am using now but when I go to some folders it says "Could not enter folder /media/Macintosh HD/..." View 1 Replies View RelatedI just setup an old computer with Suse 11.3. My goal is to store all my movies and stuff on the Suse box and access them through my home network. I have 11.3 installed, got the network setup and working, can access the internet, access files to/from my laptop to Suse box, and can even access movies/files on the Suse box from my WD Live media box. The problem is: when I add an external drive to the Suse box my WD Live does not totally 'see' it. he external USB drive is accessable on the Suse box as I've moved files to and from this external USB drive. The drive is a WD MyBook. I setup sharing in Samba and the WD Live sees the drive but cannot see the files. Is this a permission thing? Pretty sure I setup Samba correctly as I share several directories in the Suse box.

I load up the live CD, and I am able to access my hard drive, but I as I found my music folder, I cannot copy and past and/or move ANY folders into a flash drive. It says I do not have permission.

View 2 Replies View RelatedI did an installation of SUSE 11.2 on a new SCSI hard drive. Keeping the old hard drive separate. I remembered there was some info on the old hard drive I wanted.
I added this to the system and mounted a partition. I then copied the data over. Then I umounted the partition rebooted the machine and removed the hard drive. However the machine will now not boot without this hard drive even though its not mounted. Not sure what the error message im given means I think it could be trying to fchk it.Do I need to do something more like remove /dev/sdd ?

When I login as kurt, I do not have access to my home directory on the hard drive. I tried [root@localhost home] #chmod kurt kurt (after cd-ing to the correct spot), but still cannot access my files there. I can do so as Live System User, but not as me.

Anyway, it won't boot and instead takes me to a screen where it says "press s to skip mounting, or press m to recover manually" or something like that. I've pressed S, and then it tells me that it can't find /tmp or something, and I have to turn it off and back on to do anything. Pressing M doesn't help much either... at least not for a mostly-linux-idiot like me. I would do a clean install, but there are a few files I absolutely have to have from the hard drive. recover the files I need from my hard drive to a usb drive while using a Live CD?
View 9 Replies View RelatedI have just finished building a new computer and it booted with no problems from the hard drive to ubuntu 10.10 (it was a hard drive from a previous computer and had ubuntu installed). After less than a minute though it froze up completely. I restarted and now cannot get ubuntu to boot. I get to GRUB with no problems but when I try to boot ubuntu I get a black screen with a blinking cursor in the top left corner and it hangs indefinitely.
I tried to boot from a live cd to see if there was anything I could do but I get as far as the screen to choose "Try Ubuntu" or "Install" and both choices leave me on a black screen with the mouse icon. I can move the mouse but nothing else. I have tried the Ubuntu 10.10 32 bit, 11.04 64-bit, 11.04 32-bit and even Mythbuntu, which I had on a cd from a magazine. I get the same result with all of these.
On the other hand, OpenSUSE 11.4 boots from the Live CD fine and I installed it and it boots from the hard drive. This is good news but I would much prefer Ubuntu, as I'm more used to it. Am I doing something wrong or have I any hope?
