Ubuntu 10.10 I would like to access the partitions of my hard drive from the Places menu. They show up there, but when I click them, the menu just closes. I can access them by navigating Places>Computer>"Drive_Name" but it would be more convenient. I was able to access them before, but something has apparently changed..

Something very strange has happened to my system (Lucid / Gnome / 64 bit): when I try to open a location from Gnome Menu, message pops up saying: "Can't open location [file:///...]. No program is registered to open this type of file." Or something in this vein, I'm translating the message from Polish. So I can't open locations via the main menu, but the bookmarks work fine in an open Nautilus window. It looks like the system doesn't know it should open a location with Nautilus... I looked through file associations in Ubuntu Tweak, but couldn't find anything corresponding to "file:///..." or anything resembling opening a location (I'm not exactly a Linux guru). Also, the folder shortcuts in Cairo-Dock don't work, the same goes for the FolderView screenlets. However, in the MainMenu screenlet, the location shortcuts do work. There has to be some obvious explanation of this anomaly, but I lack a deeper knowledge of the system to work it out. I can't say at which point it started exactly, I think it was around the time I started dragging extra shortcuts to the Cairo-Dock shortcuts applet, but that may be a coincidence.

View 3 Replies View RelatedI recently preformed a full update to my openSuSe 11.3 x64 + gnome install. Everything was running fine before the update however post a number of features have stopped working or have changed. I used the command zypper up to update everything. The errors I've been recieving are as follows, Wastebasket
Won't open on via Desktop or Places menu. Gives the following error "Could not display "trash:" File Is Of An Unknown Type". If I drop things on the Wastebasket the files do go to /home/USERNAME/.local/share/Trash/files but I can't Empty Wastebasket upon right click as the option is highlighted out.
Computer Icon If I try to open it from link in Places menu I get the error Nautilus cannot handle "computer" locations.. The link to it has also disappeared from the left hand panel if I have a Nautilus window open.
Mounted Icons Previously I used to have 4 drives mounted;
1 network (NFS),
1 encrypted (TrueMount),
2 Windows (partitions of main machine)
Out of these only the encrypted and network drive showed on the Desktop and two Windows drives would stay mounted under /windows but have no icon on the Desktop. After the update, all these drives are on the desktop and but the only way to not have them appear on Desktop is to set Gnome config not to show any of the icons on Desktop. Although these are independent errors, they are all related to folders (at least indirectly) so I felt it was better to group them together to give a better picture of the issue.
After installing auto upgrade to allow temporary access to root directory, the Places menu does not open file folders. If I switch users it works fine.

I didn't really know what I was doing during install and wound up leaving myself with over 100GB of unallocated hard drive space. if I create a new partition out of this, could I possibly merge it with another? and if I do, should I merge it with root or home? I am using 10.10, by the way.

View 13 Replies View RelatedI'm working with an older PC that belongs to my parents. They've been using Ubuntu 8.04 with no problems, and with 10.4s release, I planned to upgrade them to the newest version. The system's specs are as follows:
1.5ghz Athlon XP CPU
1.5gb RAM (PC 2700)
20gb hdd (IDE)
I have tried both the Ubuntu 9.10 (two different discs) and a 10.4 install CD and both give me the same issue. The installation proceeds along swimmingly until partitioning comes up. The partition table simply shows no hard drives. I have heard of this issue occurring with SATA drives and motherboard settings, but what could make it happen to an old IDE drive? Any odd-ball motherboard settings or anything that might need to be changed? GParted and the Live disc (along with the currently installed version of Ubuntu) recognize drives and can navigate them. What gives?
I just bought a new 2 TB hard disk to replace my old 175 gig one. I currently am dual-booting Lucid Lynx and Windows 7, and rather than go through the process of reinstalling both, then reinstalling all my programs, settings, and everything, I was wondering if there's a way I can just copy the partitions on my 175 GB disk to the new one, grow them to fill up the rest of the free space on the new 2 TB disk, and then plug that HD into the primary master plug on my motherboard... will that work?
View 4 Replies View RelatedI've recently bought the "new" Macbook from Apple. It obviously came with OSX preinstalled. And I'm obviously not satisfied with the way it works, I also need a FAT32 partition so I can share my files between all three OS's. Tricky business. And I thought later on I might try and create me a nice LFS system to learn about Linux and show of to my mates. But doesn't a single hard drive only support up to 4 partitions? So off I went and got Ubuntu running besides Mac. It wasnt recognized by neither the default boot-loader nor rEFIt straight away. I had to hold alt to come up with the special BIOS or something every time I needed to use Ubuntu (always).
I got up to a point where I could run Ubuntu with wireless, sound and pretty much everything working. Until the kernel updates were installed. Somehow I (or maybe it) managed to screw up and booting had become impossible, for it would crash halfway through with kernel errors and other undefined weirdnesses. Meanwhile I had tried installing Windows 7 on a different partition. Which I found to be catastrophic also. I was forced to put up with OSX, which in my opinion is fine at what it does but it doesn't do very much for me. After a couple of tries I had to give up on fiddling with Ubuntu for I needed Windows 7 to run software for school. So my current partition layout looks like this......
So this is a two part question. My laptop came preinstalled with windows 7, I wanted ubuntu but needed windows to update my zune so I have both operating systems on my laptop. I only used windows for my zune, that was its sole purpose, now my zune is broken and I no longer need windows at all.
First, I downloaded about 20gb of music off of my zune and onto my windows partition, is there any way to transfer files like these from one partition to another? I don't know if that makes sense.
Second, can I unpartition my hard drive so it is purely ubuntu ** without losing all my ubuntu files and stuff **? If that wasn't clear, I want my laptop to just have ubuntu, I want the 40-some gb that I dedicated to windows back for ubuntu, and I don't want to lose all my files, settings, etc. that I already have on my ubuntu partition. Can this be done?
I am using a live-cd version of linux and want to install it to my hard-drive but when i try to unmount it and go into qtparted, it says it is still busy so i cant perform changes. This is my result when i type "mount"

I installed Ubuntu 9.04 on my latop. I have an older 80 gig HP laptop with Windows XP. Currently, i have XP as the NTFS drive and it takes up about 72 gigs of space, the swap drive for ubuntu is about 256 MB and the ext-3 drive is 2.5 gigs. However, i have no more hard drive space to run or instal any programs on Ubuntu. So what i need to do is decrease the NTFS drive as i still have over 30 gigs of free space on my laptop and increase the ext3 drive to about 10 or 15 gigs and increase the swap drive?

I noticed my hard drive had a key next to its name but could not find information regarding it online. I proceeded to unmount the drive and made 2 partitions. However, it game me an error saying it couldnt make the partitions. I turned my computer off thinking i would get back to trying tomorrow. Today i turn on my laptop and see the usual hp screen. But after that it goes to a black screen with a blinking underscore looking thing. It goes nowhere from there. It usually goes to a black screen after the hp logo, that says GRUB loading.

The drive is visible in My Computer, but when I began the install process, ubuntu didn't give me any option to install on the second drive; it doesn't seem to see it's there. I went into the Setup menu and the drive isn't found there. Does anyone know what I need to do to configure things so that I can get ubuntu onto the second HD?

I recently bumped the power cable on my debian server at home. The computer shutdown, and since then hasn't been feeling like going past grub. When I boot the computer it gets to the "Welcome to Grub!" screen, but doesn't load my menu. I booted into a live cd and the hard drive seems intact and accessible. I re-installed grub without any problems, but the same problem is happening. I tried running fsck, but it says that the "device or resource is busy while trying to open /dev/sda". I am kind of stumped and would prefer not to reinstall debian to get this box running.

Here's what i'm trying to do: i have a 300GB IDE hard drive that has a OpenSuse build. I am trying to replicate this HD so that i can have another box similar to the original one...my second drive is 500GB SATA.
So far, I just ran a 'dd' command to copy the 300GB to 500GB. Now, after having read on internet, i realized i need to change fstab & /boot/grub/menu.lst. specifically, we need to change for ex:/dev/disk/by-id/ata-Maxtor_7L300S0_L60LCJ0G-part1 to /dev/disk/by-id/sda1 i did use a Ubuntu LiveCD to access the fstab and changed the line as mentioned above. Now, how do i change the menu.lst?? right now, when i try booting up from this HD, i have issues. specifically, i get this error message: could not find /dev/VolGroup00/LogVol00

I don't care if they are mounted or not, though I prefer if they aren't. As long as they don't show up on the Places sidebar AT ALL, I'll be happy. I never use them, but keep mounting them by accident.

I have quite a lot of testing operating systems installed. Some with their own home or boot partition. Now my places section in nautilus is an utter MESS. I was not able to find any working solution how to hide these partitions.
View 9 Replies View RelatedMy version of linux has a bunch of GUI icons on the left hand side of the screen (vertical). Most are links to programs.You click the GUI icon and the program opens. When I mount my internal hard drive it adds a GUI icon for the drive. The problem is when I click on this new GUI icon it automatically loads K3b and gives an error message instead of giving me a list of what is on my drive. I deleted the program K3b and tried un-mounting then re-mounting the drive. I then tried the new GUI icon for the drive and now it automatically opens Dragon Player.
