OpenSUSE Install :: Grub Can't Boot Into Suse After Adding A Hard Drive?
Feb 6, 2010
With the generous help from caf4926 and please_try_again, i was able to boot into Ubuntu 9.10 with suse's grub legacy. Now I have another problem that i'd need help on, I added a new IDE hard drive for storage and it became sda and the original sda with 3 OSes changed to sdb. Grub can't boot into any OSes except windows 7. Well, i can still boot into Ubuntu if i change the boot option from
When I first installed the openSUSE, I had to extract whole iso to sda4, because there was some kind of with CD (scratched or something like that), Now I want to add this part to grub, so that when I want to reinstall it, it will be ready for me. I tried doing this with yast, but could't figure out whole thing.
My current setup: kernel image: (hd0,4)/boot/i386/vmlinuz-xen initial ram disk : (hd0,4)/boot/initrd-xen root-device:/dev/disk/by-id/ata-TOSHIBA_MK8032GAX_76HE0769T-part4 vga-mod:1024x768, 24 bits (mode 0x318) optional parameters: resume=/dev/disk/by-id/ata-TOSHIBA_MK8032GAX_76HE0769T-part4 splash=silent quiet showopts
This tries to do it, but gives error while trying to boot.
I came in this morning only to find that the Intel Core2 hyperthreading Dell machine is dead. It appears the processor is fried.
I have a new white-box X2 system that I will replace the dead Dell with. The X2 (AMD) does not have a hard-drive (HDD) so, I will simply put the SATA hard-drive into the PC.
Some of you may know how to do this, but I don't know where to begin after I get the Hard-drive in. (I know how to move a Windows configuration from one PC to another and handle it as it begins to blue screen (BSOD), but I don't have a clue with Linux)
This system was built with GRUB. At the very least, I expect the GRUB boot managet to surface on the display. But, what next....
I was testing an OpenSuse setup as a server. Nothing fancy and NO applications added. The only customization was the MB's LAN card and the display was set at 1024x768. I had 2 users, root and myself. What would you do? Is there some boot time options that I should follow?
So I installed SUSE 11.1 a few weeks back with two SATA drives andit's been working great. I recently received another SATA drive and wanted to add the space to my /home directory. I installed the drive and then booted up my computer. It goes through BIOS and POST just fine but when I get to GRUB my computer just hangs there. It doesn't throw any errors, it just sits until I hard reboot it. If I disconnect the extra SATA drive and then try to boot again everything starts successfully. I've done a little bit of searchingbut couldn't find much on this problem.pretty new to linux so I could definitely be missing something. Let me know if more details are needed.
I multiboot with Suse Linux 9.2 with kernel 2.6.8 & Windows XP on my hard drive. I want to know how can I remove grub boot loader from the MBR of my hard drive safely to keep Windows XP running with no problems?
Subject: grub no auto update new hard drive.doc Date: 07/26/2010 03:48:45 PM grub no auto update new hard drive. When installed 11.2 on Western Digital VelociRaptor 150 GB hard drive and now installed 300 GB VelociRaptor drive. Your grub does not update correctly to identity the op systems after the new drive is imaged; youre kidding right? I request that you provide the instruction for correcting this; you must have and auto update for grub.
I've installed FreeBSD (sdc1) and DesktopBSD (sdc4). When I try to boot DesktopBSD it boots FreeBSD.here is menu.lst

I guess the chainloader boots 1st ufs slice and ignores the other. I've installed GrUB in FreeBSD and when I try to boot with different menu 'configfile /boot/grub/menu.lst' it returns error 17. This is probably due to inability reading ufs.
I recently installed openSUSE 11.4 on another hard disk of my 11.3 machine. I have another drive in my computer that is used solely for extra storage. Before installing 11.4 I could boot my computer with or without the drive installed, but now if I try to boot without it I get Error 17 from GRUB. I don't understand this as there is nothing on that drive that should be needed by boot and I can find nothing in the GRUB configuration that references the drive.I am getting ready to clear the whole system for a fresh install anyways, but it would be nice to know for future knowledge what is causing it.
I dual booted opensuse along with vista. I installed opensuse in extended partition, with grub and gave the option as "boot from extended partition". Now everything is fine. I am able to boot into suse as well as vista. Now how can I restore my vista bootloader? I want to uninstall openSuse. When I try restore mbr from hard disk. There is absolutely no change!
I have a sata 320 gb with mandriva linux 2009.1 on it.And it is what curently atached to my cpu. It is shown as 'sda' in the partition table.I also have another 40gb hard disk with windows xp installed on it.It is shown as 'hda' in the partition table . Now what i want to do is attach this 40gb hard disk to my pc and configure grub on my 320gb hard disk('sda') so as to boot windows xp(which is residing on the second hard disk,'hda')Can anyone tell me if what im doing is feasible or not? If it is feasible, can anyone suggest me how to get it working. I know i just need to add 2-3 lines to my grub.conf, but dont know what exactly i need to write.
I just added a new hard drive an I am in gparted and when i try to create a primary partition I can only choose hfs, what am I doing wrong? I want to create ext3 or ext4
I'm using opensuse 10.2 when I rebooted the my pc I got the message (in the url).P0216_171010 | Flickr - Photo Sharing!I can not boot into tty1 or tty3,5. I tried to repair with Opensuse CD but can not.
It started when I wanted to dual boot Windows 7 and Opensuse off of my netbook (No DVD/CD drive) I tried install suse from an external hard drive and I botched it. I ended up erasing EVERYTHING off of my internal netbook hard drive. Windows and all.
Well, I had a couple of other computers so I studied up and eventually successfully installed OpenSUSE 11.2 on my external hard drive (11.3 being the one that I accidentally erased everything with, so kinda scared of it) and now I want to install openSUSE 11.2 on my internal netbook hard drive.
I can not use disks
I can not use a flash drive (For some reason, even if I make it bootable, it will not load up, this could be because it's actually a 8GB microSD card that is placed in a USB card reader.)
I can not use an external hard drive because that's what I'm running suse off of.
I've tried reading up on how to install suse on another drive off of the hard drive and I've gotten as far as whenever I boot up the netbook with the suse external hard drive connected it will ask to boot into OpenSUSE, the Fail Safe, or to install OpenSuse. When I select to install it it gives me the Error 18 Unknown File system.
I've tried formatting the internal hard drive twice. One as NTFS and again as EXT4. Neither seems to effect it other than when it's ext4 I can open it and it contains a Lost and Found folder.
When I interrupt the boot sequence by pressing c and going to the terminal and I use the root (hd +TAB command it tells me I have a hd0 and a hd1. The hd1 only has 1 partition which is ext4, which I'm assuming hd1 is the internal hard drive (I'm not sure how to check) and the hd0 is the external hard drive, which has three partitions. One with an unknown file system and two with ext4. When I try to enter the set up from the terminal it gives me the same error for any thing I put it (e.g. root (hd0,0) gives the same error as root (hd0,1), or root (hd0,2) and root (hd1,0)
Something like it cannot locate these two files I'm assuming it needs to boot. If anyone finds this relevant I'll retry it and post the files its missing.
I've been searching for awhile and can't find any threads that can solve my problem. From other threads, however, I have noticed that I should probably include my menu.lst, listed below
Code:
I have also ran the boot info script and received the RESULTS.txt file it generates. Listed below
I am trying to install opensuse on an IBM 8188 desktop with a single SATA hdd. The software appears to load just fine.. standard install but when I reboot the box .. believing it should just boot from the hard drive I get the message no OS installed. I've adjusted the bios and the drive order and I have changed to install parameters for APC or APIC.... you know what I mean... doesn't matter NO JOY IN MUD VILLE.
Dual Booting my laptop and unable to change the Boot Records on the drive. Not because I dont know how, but my primary OS will fail to boot(win7).
I have drive partitioned as follows... sda1 = Win7 system (default install) sda2 = Win7 Main (default install) sda3 = swap sda4 = Extension (I think thats what its called) sda5 = / (ext4)
What I need is a boot cd or perferably Grub installed on a 256MB Thumb drive with the options to load the installed system from sda5.
I'm getting a funny error after trying to add a new internal hard drive to my computer. After adding the new drive to the "Slave" slot GRUB will not load properly and gives me the following error Grub Loading, Please Wait Error 17 I've checked in my BIOS and the "Master" drive is still the one where grub is loaded. When I unplug the new drive the problem disappears and I can load Grub normally. I've searched the threads, but couldn't find a similar problem, or a problem that could be applied to mine. I've also tried loading the live CD, but my internal CD drive is broken, and the external one I have doesn't seem to recognized during boot time.
I burned the live version of OpenSUSE 11.3 (Gnome, 32bit) to a CD to test the compatibility of an HP Pavilion p6510f. Although Xubuntu 10.4 booted up fine, OpenSUSE did not. A message about RAID would appear (too briefly to read) and then the computer would reboot.I checked in the BIOS and found that the SATA drive has 3 modes: IDE, RAID and AHCI. The hard drive was set to RAID.
When I changed the hard drive mode to IDE, I was able to run the OpenSUSE live CD; but the change ruined my Windows installation. Windows doesn't boot under IDE or RAID mode. (I have reset the mode to RAID and am restoring the Windows installation.) Is there an option/argument that I can pass to the kernel so that OpenSUSE will work under RAID mode? (Since Xubuntu 10.4 was able to do it, I'm assuming OpenSUSE should be able to.)
I did an installation of SUSE 11.2 on a new SCSI hard drive. Keeping the old hard drive separate. I remembered there was some info on the old hard drive I wanted.
I added this to the system and mounted a partition. I then copied the data over. Then I umounted the partition rebooted the machine and removed the hard drive. However the machine will now not boot without this hard drive even though its not mounted. Not sure what the error message im given means I think it could be trying to fchk it.Do I need to do something more like remove /dev/sdd ?
I've been scouring the forums and Google for 2 days now and am not sure which track I should follow with my problem, because the GRUB path doesn't seem to be working, nor the fsck. I'd appreciate any insight anyone can provide, as I feel I'm spinning my wheels at this stage.A few days ago, I was transferring files from my Ubuntu server via SFTP to my laptop across my local network. All of a sudden, the transfer quit in the middle of transferring a file and since then, I was unable to FTP or SSH in to the server. I hooked up a monitor to see what was going on and there was only a black screen, so I powered off the server and powered back on.
While booting, the Ubuntu logo screen initially appears, but then goes to black and error messages come up, asking me if I wish to start the degraded RAID. "Gave up waiting for root device" is the message I get and it tells me that /dev/md2 does not exist and drops me to a initramfs shell. When I try to start in degraded RAID, it tells me:
mdadm: create user root not found mdadm: create group disk not found [49.702561] raid5: failed to run raid set md2 mdadm: failed to run RUN_ARRAY /dev/md2: Input/output error mdadm: not enough devices to start the array
I have 4 hard drives in the server, configured as RAID 5.I boot from a Live CD and have a look at the discs. All are said to be healthy, except for the 4th which is said to have some bad sectors.I'm unable to access (or don't properly know how to access) the /boot/grub/menu.1st file to change the root delay parameter, which is what I thought I would try first.
I have a dual boot machine windows xp & Ubuntu 10.04. I want to use Grub 2 to boot an Ubuntu 8.04 32bit live cd image off my hard drive. I put a copy of the 8.04 iso in a new directory /boot/iso. I added the following lines to my grub.cfg.
menuentry "Ubuntu Live 8.04 32bit" { loopback loop /boot/iso/ubuntu804.iso linux (loop)/casper/vmlinuz boot=casper iso-scan/filename=/boot/iso/ubuntu804.iso noeject noprompt -- initrd (loop)/casper/initrd.lz }
I have Ubuntu/Vista dual boot desktop with Single HDD (200GB) that i cloned to an external USB HDD (320GB) using clonezilla. My intention is to use the external HDD as a backup to up running in case my 3 year old desktop HDD fails. To make sure the clone is good to use if need, i connected external HDD to USB port and tried boot from it but got "Error 18". I tried to Google got some infoDid a fdisk -lu and got the following.
Code: Disk /dev/sda: 200.0 GB, 200049647616 bytes 255 heads, 63 sectors/track, 24321 cylinders, total 390721968 sectors
I have just done a fresh install of OpenSuse 11.2 over 11.1 (and I love it). Grub has the options of booting into Opensuse and windows but has missed Mint.It normally wouldn't bother me, but I use Mint for a few things I can't get working in Suse. I was just wanting to manually add Mint to the Grub menue.I would like it to be added to the Suse grub as I prefer the look of it to the Mint grub.
I have just installed 11.3 x64. The installation went fine and worked for the first few hours. I ran the online update tool, and now it cannot find grub unless the installation disc is inserted and I select the "boot from hard disc" option.
I have read about the problem of the root partition being back, but not sure that's it.
sda1 - swap sda2 - / sda3 - /home
There used to be a repair tool in the installation disks. I could not find that in this media. Is that still available?
I just tried to install F13. I can't install grub to any drive other than that which F13 gets installed on. When I click on the drop-down menu, only /dev/sdd is available.
i am multi booting with another operating system that doesn't boot on a pc and requires a special bootloader to make it work, but before i can install that bootloader which will overwrite grub on the mbr. how do i install grub on the hard drive so that the special bootloader will exist and will recognize grub and boot Ubuntu from the hard drive instead of the mbr can this be done with the ubuntu live cd. remember i am installing grub on the hard drive, not the mbr and it's grub2
Trying to add a section in grub to boot a Ubuntu 10.10 from a partition, and can enter all the info OK, but it won't save it. It has an issue with the kernel and ram files not being where configured, but I tell it to save them anyway. When I go back in the section hasn't been saved...??
