Fedora :: Partitioning Hard Drive With F14 Utility

I have installed Fedora 14 along with Libre Office along with some other applications so I am learning slowly, re-learning really. However I am having a difficult time understanding partitioning. I would like to make another partition for Windoze. I also cannot get a USB mouse to work. I have run some commands to gather disk info I will refrain from list it here as it is a lot of data. At least until asked to do so. What I have run so far is fdisk -l, df, blkid, & cat fstab.

i have a 1 TB external hard drive and i have created 4 partitions as 3 of 300 GB , and one of 100 GB and i have format it as FAT but it is not showing 4th partitionand when i use fdisk -l it shows it as linux partitions and they are mounting in linux onlywhen i use the drive in windows , disk is not able to mount

I have been trying to install centos on my hp servers and when i get to partitions my hard drives the OS does not detect any harddrives. I have 4 scsi drives and i believe a intergrated smart array controller.

if I make more partitions rather than creating single one, will I get more data access performance? E.g Instead of keeping 1,5TB partition, create 5x300MB and keep different data in different partitions? Logically hard drive will spend less time on finding data in smaller partition then in bigger one, right? Is there any statistics for performance vs size?

I have only known about Linux software for the past couple of weeks. I want to install Ubuntu 10.10 on an older desktop I have so I can become more familiar with it. I am average in knowladge about Windows OS and MS-DOS. I tried to install Ubuntu and I get an error message about the harddrive. The CD I am booting with will load on my other PC with Windows XP on it. I have only let it run on it long enough to verify that it is bootable.
I have made a floppy boot disc following the instructions on another Linux site about Ubuntu. I have also tried to boot my alternate PC with the floppy and it boots up. The harddrive on my working PC is a Maxtor 40gb formatted with NTFS file system. The harddrive in the older desktop is a Western Digital 80GB WD800LB-55DNA0.It worked fine with Windows XP on it. I also made a Western Digital DATA Lifeguard for DOS floppy and it boots with it.

It's pretty much as simple as that. I am simply wondering if anyone knows of a tutorial of some kind or can explain how to partition around, in order to exclude bad data blocks on a busted hard drive. This is on a computer I just set up to run Karmic Koala. On another forum someone mentioned that there is a way to do this, and that is the only way, to my knowledge to "fix" said hard drive.On a complete side note, does anyone know if an Intel 965 is supposed to work with Karmic out of the box, if you will? I haven't gotten a chance to check it specifically for this, and there seems to be no mention of this chipset with Karmic on these forums.

Have just installed Ubuntu Server 10.04 on a dell with a perc 700 raid card. Running a mirrored raid1 (2x 500G as one drive). All went well. Have installed a basic Gnome front end and Webmin. I want to partition the hard drive into system and data storage areas. What is the best way to do this with a mirrored RAID system?

My friend and I were discussing partitioning and we disagreed on repartitioning when the drive was full. How full is too full before partitioning will mess up your file system? I've partitioned before but it was only after the OS was installed, so only about %5 of the drive is being used. I read that 90% or more is too much. My friend claims it doesn't matter, and you can repartition even if the drive is 95%+ full.

I'm trying to implement laptop_mode (to put disk to sleep when not in use), but something keeps waking it up. 'TOP' really doesn't do the trick.
This is apparently a known problem. Has to do with disk idling not implemented correctly.

I recently tried Fedora on my laptop (previously Debian; I was bored one day) and gnome-disk-utility (palimpsest) warned me that my hard drive had numerous bad sectors. I re-installed Debian to find that this software was installed before so why had it not warned me?
When I load the disk utility, it says SMART is not available. I've got smartmontools installed, I can run a self-test with smartctl but I don't think this shows bad sectors. I've tried starting smartd on startup but the disk utility never changes from "SMART is not available". It is possible for it to work with this hardware as it works in Fedora on this laptop; any ideas?

I had this corrupted external hdd and so I formatted the main partition on it on windows but messed up in the formatting and ended up having to format the entire thing. I got some weird message about it not being initialized (no not mounted) so I was in compmgmt.msc in windows and right clicked it in device manager and it asked for master boot or GUID I selected the latter and formatted. Worked fine and all for a bit but now it doesn't show up as a drive. I noticed when using compmgmt.msc it showed up that it had installed driver software and was being recognized but in the partition editing area there was nothing on this drive, reinstalling driver software doesn't seem to help. Also GParted wont load up when I have it plugged in and Disk Utility doesn't show it. I am requesting help to fix this problem within Ubuntu 10.10 somehow so I can use it properly.

I've just officially released a new open source partitioning utility: FixParts. As the name implies, its purpose is to fix broken partition tables, although it also has a few other specialized uses. Broken partition tables often manifest in GParted and other libparted-based tools as an empty disk, even when you know partitions exist on it; or sometimes as a disk with incorrect partitions shown. FixParts' three main goals are:
To remove stray GUID Partition Table (GPT) data from MBR disks. This problem can result from re-using a GPT disk by repartitioning it with a GPT-unaware utility, such as Linux fdisk or at least some versions of the Windows installer. To resize extended partitions that are too large or too small. This problem can be created by TestDisk under some circumstances, and perhaps by other tools, too. To change primary partitions into logical partitions, or vice-versa. Such changes might not technically be fixes of problems, but they can be, if something turned a logical partition into a primary partition, as the Windows XP installer does sometimes. This feature of the program can also be helpful in working around the problem of computer manufacturers who place four primary partitions on their disks at the factory.
The program is not intended for general-purpose partitioning; for that, use fdisk, GNU Parted, GParted, Disk Utility, or other tools. You should also be aware that FixParts may change partition numbers. This shouldn't affect a typical Ubuntu installation, but it might if you use partition device filenames rather than UUIDs in /etc/fstab or your GRUB 2 configuration.
FixParts is an offshoot of my GPT fdisk (gdisk and sgdisk) package, which is used to partition GPT disks. Because FixParts has such different uses, though, I've put it into a separate binary package. You can download them all from the GPT fdisk SourceForge download page.

Trying to install Fedora 12 using the 6 CDs. Trying to install on an older x86 box.Problem is that when detecting my hard drive, Fedora 12 recognizes it as a sda hard drive instead of hda hard drive. I have no SCSI connected to my computer what so ever. It's an old fashion PATA Western Digital hard drive.If I proceed with the install, Fedora 12 only installs 200MB of the OS from the first CD only. No options for additional software or anything.

I have 350GB external Western Digital USB hard Drive.When I try to remove it from the system by executing Safely Remove Drive menu the fedora 15 system gets stuck.The processor starts giving a hum sound and it goes on even if it is left for half an hour in the stuck state.The Mouse is not working and everything is halted.

i have installed fedora 14 with so many libraries ,development tools installed on my pc but i usually have to present some projects which can run on my system .........and can't be executed or compiled due to absence of libraries and tools there so, i there some way to so that i can use this current installation on my hard drive of my pc to some external media like external hard disk and plug and use that installation anywhere on any system..

My parents bought a new hard drive for a laptop that I've owned for several years. It's much larger than the current one, so I plan on splitting it up to dual boot it with Ubuntu.I have no problem with partitioning a drive (I always keep a LiveCD handy), but my question is this: how can I go about moving the existing partition to the new drive? This is a laptop, so I can't simply plug the new drive into another slot.
Also, even if I manage to move it, will Windows still work on the new drive in a larger partition? I've had this laptop for quite a while, and I've lost the recovery discs that came with it a long time ago. I also have a lot of software without CDs to reinstall them with. This makes not reinstalling Windows a high priority.

I have a BIOS affected by 1024 cylinder limit ,,(Just to explain , the BIOS will recognize only 137GB no matter how big the HDD is (160/250/320/500))This problem doesnt affect the OS in any way --Linux can read the entire disk and so can WIN after SP1 of XP...This problem is only upto the point of MBR handing over boot instructions to Bootloader..In that case LiLo or Grub1 or Grub2 would fail if the kernel of the OS is after the 137GBI want to know if I can mix 2 partitioning schemes..Say use MSDOS partitioning till the limit of say 100 GB and for the rest 60 GB use GPT partitioning and install GRUB2 (as I read only GRUB2 supports GPT cleanly) ...Then , maybe I can do away with options of restricting /boot within 137

What is the recommended method these days for command line partitioning and formatting for the Terabyte size hard disk.?
It was easy to keep up when your working or have access to hardware for re-purposing, but that has all dried up and my knowledge has been left behind. The problem(s) are with new, recent hardware
Following a crash from a now detectable faulty stick of RAMM, I've lost one of my data hard disks and my fiddling with replacement seems to leave various errors/warnings mainly about GPT not supported and this message is still present despite trying fdisk, cfdisk, gpart, gparted, and(?).
System is an ASUS mobo using SATA drives (root 500Gb: MBR+3 partitions;/, swap, /home), and two 2.4TB with single partitions.

i wrote the following script for copy one source harddisk to 5 destination harddisk simultaneously.

after finising to run this command the image was trasfered to all harddirve. But no verfication message. i saw the hash value entry in md5 log. how to check the source and destination clone properly

I am on F15 32-bit with GNOME 3. I keep getting "A Hard Disk Is Failing" warnings from the Disk Utility, very frequently. Is this a serious issue? Because I knew this to be a bug in Palimpsest DU back in F13/14. Also how can I disable any notifications from this application?
