SUSE :: 4 Terabyte Hard Drive Limit

Jan 23, 2010

My new motherboard came with two on-board harddrive raid controllers, for a possible total of 10 sata drives. Now that 1-terabyte drives are getting down to near $100, I never need to run out of space again.Except: last night I read that Suse Linux has 4 terabyte hard drive limit. Is that true? Is the limit per computer, per drive, or per controller?

OpenSUSE Install :: Move SUSE Hard Drive To New PC?

Feb 26, 2010

I came in this morning only to find that the Intel Core2 hyperthreading Dell machine is dead. It appears the processor is fried.

I have a new white-box X2 system that I will replace the dead Dell with. The X2 (AMD) does not have a hard-drive (HDD) so, I will simply put the SATA hard-drive into the PC.

Some of you may know how to do this, but I don't know where to begin after I get the Hard-drive in. (I know how to move a Windows configuration from one PC to another and handle it as it begins to blue screen (BSOD), but I don't have a clue with Linux)

This system was built with GRUB. At the very least, I expect the GRUB boot managet to surface on the display. But, what next....

I was testing an OpenSuse setup as a server. Nothing fancy and NO applications added. The only customization was the MB's LAN card and the display was set at 1024x768. I had 2 users, root and myself. What would you do? Is there some boot time options that I should follow?

OpenSUSE Hardware :: Installation Of SUSE 11.2 On A New SCSI Hard Drive?

Jan 22, 2010

I did an installation of SUSE 11.2 on a new SCSI hard drive. Keeping the old hard drive separate. I remembered there was some info on the old hard drive I wanted.

I added this to the system and mounted a partition. I then copied the data over. Then I umounted the partition rebooted the machine and removed the hard drive. However the machine will now not boot without this hard drive even though its not mounted. Not sure what the error message im given means I think it could be trying to fchk it.Do I need to do something more like remove /dev/sdd ?

Maybe i could copy settings over from another distro if i knew which settings to replace.

Ubuntu Installation :: Remove GRUB Reference To USB Drive

Jan 21, 2010

I was trying to load up Ubuntu 9.10 on a thumb drive to load look at the files on a computer with a dead disk drive, I couldnt boot up on the other computer, but thats another story (yes the drive was marked as bootable)

When I restart my laptop whose diskdrive I used to install Ubuntu onto the USB drive, I get a GRUB error No such device and can load anything unless I plug back in the USB drive. When it is plugged in, the USB boot is the primary (1st in the list) boot. I tried editing the .lst file on my laptops drive but it only has its kernels listed. Anyone know how to make my system quit looking for a USB mounted kernel? Or at least not fail if it can't find one.

Ubuntu :: Can't Boot- Bad Hard Drive Or GRUB?

Feb 12, 2010

I've been scouring the forums and Google for 2 days now and am not sure which track I should follow with my problem, because the GRUB path doesn't seem to be working, nor the fsck. I'd appreciate any insight anyone can provide, as I feel I'm spinning my wheels at this stage.A few days ago, I was transferring files from my Ubuntu server via SFTP to my laptop across my local network. All of a sudden, the transfer quit in the middle of transferring a file and since then, I was unable to FTP or SSH in to the server. I hooked up a monitor to see what was going on and there was only a black screen, so I powered off the server and powered back on.

While booting, the Ubuntu logo screen initially appears, but then goes to black and error messages come up, asking me if I wish to start the degraded RAID. "Gave up waiting for root device" is the message I get and it tells me that /dev/md2 does not exist and drops me to a initramfs shell. When I try to start in degraded RAID, it tells me:

mdadm: create user root not found
mdadm: create group disk not found
[49.702561] raid5: failed to run raid set md2
mdadm: failed to run RUN_ARRAY /dev/md2: Input/output error
mdadm: not enough devices to start the array

I have 4 hard drives in the server, configured as RAID 5.I boot from a Live CD and have a look at the discs. All are said to be healthy, except for the 4th which is said to have some bad sectors.I'm unable to access (or don't properly know how to access) the /boot/grub/menu.1st file to change the root delay parameter, which is what I thought I would try first.

Ubuntu Installation :: Grub 2 On A Second Hard Drive

Apr 11, 2011

I've been reading and searching the forums here and most of the problems I have read about stem from writing the grub2 to the MBR of the primary drive. So i'm trying to avoid these problems if possible. Heres what I'm trying to achieve. I have two seperate hard drives in my PC, on the first is Vista Home Premium 64bit. The second drive is now completely empty and has just been reformated to NTFS with the standard 4096 setting.

I would like to install Ubuntu 10.10 and grub2 onto the second drive so that nothing is written to the primary drive at all. In a thread I read it mentioned that to do this I would need to use a "Specify Partitions Manually (Advanced)" option. My thinking is that I can just use the same process I'm using to run Ubuntu from a dvd disk to start Ubuntu once installed on the second drive. The process is an F10 "Boot Menu" when the computer is first turned on just before it starts to run Vista.

So my question is about the advanced installer options. Is there a walkthough available anywhere? (with screenshots maybe). I'm just worried that something may come up in the advanced installer that I have no knowlege of. I can re-format the second drive again from within Ubuntu running from disk if I need to (NTFS???). Also when running Ubuntu from disk I can still see the main primary drive and all its files. It would be nice to have this option but its not essential. My system. Windows Vista Home Premium 6.0.2002 SP2 Build 6002. 64 Bit, Intel Q8200 Quad core, 8GB Ram, Nvidia 9600GT 512MB
