SUSE / Novell :: Program To Completely Destroy All Data In Free Space On Hard Drive?

Aug 10, 2010

I dont want to wipe the whole drive, and i don't want to delete only particular files. I want to completely destroy all data in free space.I've found some articles about secure-delete package for linux that would allow erasing freespace with the command 'sfill,' but I can't find it in the repositories nor through google. This would be ideal but it seems maybe it's debian only.

SUSE / Novell :: Correct Amount Of Free Space For The Root Partition?

Oct 4, 2010

I recently tried a frugal/poor mans install of knoppix that I placed in a folder in the root partition of /home (hda7) in opensuse 11.3. I decided to delete the folder and contents. The hard drive was busy for several minutes and after it was finished, I checked the disk usage and found that / was at 97% capacity, up from what was 10gig of free space. I could not find any traces of the deleted folder or its contents, so I used puppy linux and ran e2fsck on the / partition. Puppy linux reported 1.9gig free space and opensuse reported .5gig free space. My concern is if the deleted folder is taking up space in the root partition that I can not locate and why the difference in reported disk space usage in hda7. Also, if more packages are installed, where are they placed (/ or /home)?

Fedora :: Unable To Use Free Space In Hard Drive.

Jul 28, 2009

I installed Fedora 11 about a week ago. And all was going well until I woke up this morning, and started using it for a little bit. I noticed it was going painfully slow... (almost like Windows Vista >.<) and I started to look for a reason why. Turns out my free space in my filesystem is running out. I have a 500g hard drive, and for some reason my filesystem is only set to use 9gigs...

Why can I only use 9 gigs of my hard drive? And how can I increase that size to something less annoying so I don't have to delete stuff every few days? Also, I'm kinda new to Linux. So if this is a newb question, and you can link me somewhere to get the information, please do. I just spent an hour or so searching google, and using this forums search to no avail.

Ubuntu :: 1tb Hard Drive Free Space Gone (10.10 64bit)

Feb 9, 2011

I have a small issue with a 1tb sata drive I've just instlled. It was brand new, and I've install maverick 64bit on it, now I'm a little puzzled about the amount of free space there is on the drive. If I open nautilus it shows the amount of free space in the bottom left section of the screen (see picture-1) This seems a little odd to me, where the hell has all the space gone? my entire home directory is a total of 40.3gb (see picture-2)

I've done some looking about and I can't seem to find out where the space has gone, I had a look at the drive using gparted and this is what I got (see picture-3) If you look at the pictures it seems I'm missing about 320 gb or so, any guesses to where the hell it's gone?

Ubuntu / Apple :: Partition Hard Drive But There Is No Free Space Available?

Feb 24, 2010

I just installed a new hard drive with OS X on my iMac G5 PowerPC. The drive size is 1TB. OS X Leopard is currently only using about 80 gigs of that space. For some reason, at the disk preparation from my live PowerPC Ubuntu install, the entire bar is green with only 8kb of (white) free space. I want to partition the computer to add Ubuntu to it, but I don't want to risk partitioning my hard drive and losing any data affiliated with the current o/s installed on it (OS X Leopard). What is the best way to go about doing this? A manual partition?

Applications :: Finding A Program To Destroy Data On DVDs

Feb 7, 2011

What I want to do is force my DVD burner to use full writing power on the entire surface of a DVD. This should be able to invisibly damage the contained data, and should work on CDs, DVDs and BRDs too (in theory). I don't want to write data over it, so it's not a matter of having a RW disc or a R one. The result I want to obtain is simply an unreadable disc that does not look damaged. Do you know if there's a program able to ignore a disc being already full and perform this task?

Now sometimes I copy/move files from Windows partitions to /home, this is easily done. But when I restart the computer, It hangs and KDE is not loaded giving reason that disk is out of space. I have to work on commandline and delete some files from /home to free some space, only then I can restart the computer normally. This is very annoying. When I copy/move files then Opensuse should immediately give me a warning. It seems nonsense to not start kde.

SUSE / Novell :: Install Fails To Recognize Ide Hard Drives

Aug 25, 2010

I have an Intel MB (855GME with 6300ESB) that I'm having trouble installing OpenSUSE 11.1 onto the IDE drive. It will install to a SATA drive but for various reasons I need to install on IDE (PATA on 6300ESB). The install fails to find any ide drive (I know the drive/interface works because I can install XP on this same ide drive and boot from it). If I parse the dmesg output I see the message "ata_piix 0000:1f.1 device not available because of BAR 2 (0x0-0x7) collisions". I'm trying to determine if there's some workaround for this. I've tried various kernel parameters and no joy.

I've tried Ubuntu with similar results. Older kernels WILL install onto this same MB/PATA controller (Ubuntu 6.06, 2.6.15 and RHEL4) so it seems that something changed in the ATA driver as the kernel has matured and my bios isn't up to snuff for these pickier drivers.

OpenSUSE Install :: Free Space On Hard Disc?

It's the D* partition that I would like to add to my home directory. Is there an easy way of doing this, or am I looking at a complete re-install of openSUSE?

General :: How To Repair Filesystem - Appearing As Free Space - Recover The NTFS Data Partition ?

Feb 16, 2010

Original disk:
XP NTFS primary
Linux / ext4 logical
Linux /home ext4 logical
Win 7 NTFS logical
NTFS data logical
swap space
NTFS recovery partition

I tried to install linux, as there was a problem with XP overwriting grub, I chose write grub to /dev/sda8 (which is where the linux install was appearing earlier).

I guess this borked the filesystem somehow. Now the NTFS data partition and the swap space are appearing as one free space.
Well actually before that some linux live CDs (including gparted were seeing the entire drive as unpartitioned). I had to go into XP and delete the /ext4 partitions.

Is there any way for me to recover the NTFS data partition ?

SUSE / Novell :: How To Expand OS Drive / When Have No Room Left?

May 29, 2009

I have a hd5 (?) of 10 GB for the system OS. I had used about 7 GB and believed that adding software from a NIC would not greatly exceed space on this drive but was wrong - it now has about 40KB remaining. The system has a 2GB swap drive elsewhere on the SUSE 10.1 Enterprise desktop system, 127GB HD total. The total HD has about 63 GB of "unused" space - in the hd6(?).

I could not expand the hd5 partition using the on-board partition software and did not know how to handle it so rebooted. Now the system will not start since there is not enough space. My questions: 1) How can I/can I us the on-board partition expansion SAFELY to expand the 10GB to 20GB from a scripting bootup or similar? 2) I have GNU-parted but could not install it on the Linux before rebooting - not enough space. Can it/should it be expanded on a floppy drive or similar and be used to expand the hd5 partition? I do not have another Linux machine. How can I get out of this fix?such as creating another partition, 20 GB as hd7, moving all hd5 info. into it (by script since I cannot boot up?), then deleting the orignial hd5, and renaming the new partition hd5?
