Fedora :: Mount Virtual Disk Image?
Sep 28, 2010Is it possible to mount a virtual disk image like qcow2 as a rw filesystem? I would assume guestfs could do it, but I couldn't figure it out from the man page. Basically I want to be able to read and write to the contents of a Windows virtual machine, just like I mounted a physical disk.

Jan 22, 2011I have an issue with a PC (XP pro)that had a virus which deleted all the files in the windows/system32/config folder. I first attempted to do the second repair option on the XP cd and it wasn't available. So unable to boot to windows and run an anti-virus; I put the hard drive in my external enclosure. Plugged it into my ubuntu laptop and removed the virus infected files using Clam. I then tried using the XP cd in the first repair to copy the files only to get an access denied msg.
I would like to just copy necessary data from the drive with XP pro installed and then reinstall XP and give the PC back to the owners. However the person that did the original install used a volume license cd and I unfortunately have no more CD keys and hate using cracks in certain business environments. So I came up with good idea at the time to setup XP pro in virtual box and then copy the files from there however those files are in use when the machine is running and can't be copied. So is there anyway to mount the Virtual hard drive and copy the files while the virtual machine is off?

What i need is to mount several directories from any other partiton (or file system) as a new merge file system that can grow or decrease depending on the free space. As if it was a dinamic RAID,so i can work with huge files distributed over the partitions mounted.
Ejemp: /mnt/sda1/dir_raid1 + /home/dir_raid2 + /mnt/sda3/dir_raid3 ---> /mnt/RAID/
mhddfs and unionfs <---- are not the solution im searching (cant use huge files)

Dec 21, 2010whenever I run my winxp VM image, I will still see the BIOS, but as soon as it begin to boot the hard disk, a black screen will just stay there and nothing else happens. Maybe I was too harsh on my virtual machine and it decided to break down. anyway, Im running on fedora 11 leonidas.Is there any way for me to repair my winxp.img file? or is there any way I can rescue the current situation

CentOS 5 :: Create Virtual Machine From Existing Image?
Jan 3, 2011I had set up 4 virtual machines on centos 5.5 system where I directed the image locations to an external storage. I have lost the image files in the storage, but I have the image files that were copied from the virtual machine image location. I want to put up the same system on the same computer by copying these backup images. However, when I copy the image file to the same exact location and start the corresponding virtual machine I get "no bootable disk" error. When I increase the size of the image using "qemu-img" commands, I can get rid of this error, but get "error reading disk" error. Is there a way to overcome these problems, or is it not possible to restore a virtual machine by copying the machine image file under ..../xen/images?

May 18, 2010I'm trying to set up a virtual machine environment in Centos5.5. My hardware fully supports virtualization, and I'm running qemu as the hypervisor with Virtual Machine Manager as the GUI to manage and create VMs. Host hardware is a Dell PowerEdge T710, with a quad core Xenon processor and four 1TB disks in a raid 6 array.
Within the Virtual Machine Manager when trying to create a new VM, there is the option to not "allocate entire virtual disk now". What format is created when you "allocate entire virtual disk now" and when you don't?
I want to create a qcow2 image format, but it doesn't look like it is supported. Does anybody know how to create a VM with a qcow2 image format?
When you create a blank disk with "qemu-img create -f qcow2 disk.qcow2 3700G", it indeed does create a qcow2 image. However, Virtual Machine Manager is unable to read these images, claiming that it is 15 megs or so in size (which is what it actually occupies in host disk space until you try and put a VM into it).
General :: Auto-mount Virtual Machine Locations When VMware Image Finishes Loading?
Jun 20, 2011I mount a few locations from a VMware virtual machine, but currently every time I start up VMware I need to re-mount the locations once the VMware image has started up fully, which gets tedious. I'd like to be able to mount them automatically when VMware is started.
I generally double-click the .VMX file (which is associated with VMware Player) to launch the virtual machine, but once it has finished loading I would need to run the mount commands manually or execute a bash script that does it.
Is there any way you can think of to have it done automatically? One way I can think of is to start my virtual machine by running a script that starts VMware player, sleeps for a minute or so, then runs the mount command - but setting the right sleep interval would be difficult because this varies a fair bit - and overall, it's a solution that's kinda icky and that I'd like to avoid if there's some better option.

I would like to periodically test this Windows Server 2003 installation for viruses. Obvious solution would be to install an AV software under this Windows Server 2003 installation. However, I was wondering, is this possible to use NOD32 for Linux or clamav in order to test this Windows Server 2003 installation for viruses? Is NOD32 for Linux able to detect viruses inside the .vmdk file?

Or, if I could reformat the card so that it could handle files larger than 4 GB, that would be great too. But I don't know how to do either one of these. Feb 1, 2010I have an ubuntu server that I am using as a gateway router. I have 2 nics in the machine and am using iptables to run the NAT.I now have a need to provide several machines on the inside of the network with their own public IP. So I created a virtual interface on the the WAN card and attempted a 1:1 nat across it, but it's not working. The virtual interface isn't even responding to pings. If I ping the ip of the virtual interface from the outside, it doesn't work. If I run a tcpdump on the interface, I can see ICMP request packets but no replies. Watching the same dump while pinging the non-virtual interface IP results in both request and reply packets. What's stranger the inbound ICMP request packets on the virtual interface seem to be hit or miss. Sometimes when I ping it, I can see the request packets hitting the interface, sometimes I get nothing.

Dec 25, 2009I was testing a bug in F12+Acer Aspire One and its 'suspend' feature (you can probably find the thread) and I ended with my SDHC card messed up. I formatted it as ext2 (or ext3, don't remember exactly) and apparently its superblock got corrupted. For one thing there is a single file I want to recover from the card (I don't mind formatting it afterwards). I am no expert using e2fsck or fsck, that's why I am asking here. In addition I used the "dd" command to create a backup of the drive in a file (so I can start tinkering with it). What is the best course of action to recover my files? Either from the card or from the image?

Sep 29, 2010I have tried putting the SDHC card in before switching on laptop, after, unmounting and remounting several times... on the odd occasion (1/10?) it reads fine, but more often than not, i can see thumbnails of all the images but on opening the file it comes out wrong...either most of the image is a grey block - so can see a tiny bit of sky then its as if it hasn't rendered the whole image...or, the image is striped horizontally, with as if a film negative has been shredded and then misaligned with the colours going wrong...is there an update, something to install to fix this? ETA: - its not the card which works perfect on other laptops and its not the card reader it opens fine in windows 7 on the same computer.

Aug 23, 2009I have spent considerable hours searching forums and googling. I have yet to find out what "lm-sensors acpitz-virtual-0 Adapter: Virtual device temp1:" is actually looking at. I have an Abit IP35 motherboard with Ubuntu 9.04 installed.
Here is the output from sensors:
Virtual Device Temp 1 keeps going up to 121 degrees and the computer shuts down. None of the others overheat. Also, my bios does not show my voltages to be set like it lists above. The bios in the motherboard is the latest from Abit.

Aug 25, 2009When I create virtual ethernet interface and do a ping -I <v_int> <host> the outgoing address is the one of the physical interface and NOT the virtual interface.Is there no chance that trafic will go out with virtual interface address??Incoming trafic is done well i.e. responds to the virtual interface have the virtual address.
My problem is that I have 2 modems and want to check both default gw behind the modems.
If I do a "normal" ping both are reachable over default route even the modem which is not the default route will not work because ping goes over the working modem.So I have 2 routing tables and want to route the virtual interface to one modem the other to the other modem
