I'm working on building a pre-patched image of Linux and Windows. Windows I used sysprep and worked out pretty well but not sure what is the steps for Linux? I am planning to use CentOS and Ubuntu, is there a command or script that will recheck the MAC address and prompt for new machine name?

I need to use the hdd for something else, so I want to create a clone image of the drive that I can later restore to a different hdd I put into the enclosure. What is the best method of doing this? Can I boot up into Linux on my external and create a single cloned image and save that image to the internal hdd on my computer? If so how do I do this? Is it a native function of Fedora or do I have to install a separate program?
View 11 Replies View RelatedMy HDD crashed (it wasn't completely disastrous, though). I was able to get my Ubuntu 10.10 partition of the disk with dd_rescue. I can see all of the data in the partition and everything. dd_rescue reported that there were no errors.Now, I have a fresh HDD, and I copied the image that I created with Gparted, and turned the boot flag on. I turn my system on, and all I get is a flashing cursor in the corner of the screen.I get the feeling that this would be easy for a seasoned user, but I'm not sure where to go. Not quick, mind you, but easier Now that I've got my flash somewhat stable, I'd like to know how to make a mirror image 'clone' of this flash to another, just like it. Between my Broadcom drivers, nVidea drivers, updates and flash/java, I've gotten pretty protective of this little flash drive! I've head 'dd' will do it, but, as a newb, is their an application or tool that might make the job easier.
View 2 Replies View RelatedI mount a few locations from a VMware virtual machine, but currently every time I start up VMware I need to re-mount the locations once the VMware image has started up fully, which gets tedious. I'd like to be able to mount them automatically when VMware is started.
I generally double-click the .VMX file (which is associated with VMware Player) to launch the virtual machine, but once it has finished loading I would need to run the mount commands manually or execute a bash script that does it.
Is there any way you can think of to have it done automatically? One way I can think of is to start my virtual machine by running a script that starts VMware player, sleeps for a minute or so, then runs the mount command - but setting the right sleep interval would be difficult because this varies a fair bit - and overall, it's a solution that's kinda icky and that I'd like to avoid if there's some better option.
Anyone tried using virtual xp image on sd card? Hows the feeling? No difference from installed?

View 4 Replies View RelatedI have an issue with a PC (XP pro)that had a virus which deleted all the files in the windows/system32/config folder. I first attempted to do the second repair option on the XP cd and it wasn't available. So unable to boot to windows and run an anti-virus; I put the hard drive in my external enclosure. Plugged it into my ubuntu laptop and removed the virus infected files using Clam. I then tried using the XP cd in the first repair to copy the files only to get an access denied msg.
I would like to just copy necessary data from the drive with XP pro installed and then reinstall XP and give the PC back to the owners. However the person that did the original install used a volume license cd and I unfortunately have no more CD keys and hate using cracks in certain business environments. So I came up with good idea at the time to setup XP pro in virtual box and then copy the files from there however those files are in use when the machine is running and can't be copied. So is there anyway to mount the Virtual hard drive and copy the files while the virtual machine is off?
I have a virtual disk image. Is it possible to boot the computer from it, instead of having to use virtualbox?

whenever I run my winxp VM image, I will still see the BIOS, but as soon as it begin to boot the hard disk, a black screen will just stay there and nothing else happens. I had set up 4 virtual machines on centos 5.5 system where I directed the image locations to an external storage. I have lost the image files in the storage, but I have the image files that were copied from the virtual machine image location. I want to put up the same system on the same computer by copying these backup images. However, when I copy the image file to the same exact location and start the corresponding virtual machine I get "no bootable disk" error. When I increase the size of the image using "qemu-img" commands, I can get rid of this error, but get "error reading disk" error. Is there a way to overcome these problems, or is it not possible to restore a virtual machine by copying the machine image file under ..../xen/images?

My hardware fully supports virtualization, and I'm running qemu as the hypervisor with Virtual Machine Manager as the GUI to manage and create VMs. Host hardware is a Dell PowerEdge T710, with a quad core Xenon processor and four 1TB disks in a raid 6 array.
Within the Virtual Machine Manager when trying to create a new VM, there is the option to not "allocate entire virtual disk now". What format is created when you "allocate entire virtual disk now" and when you don't?
I want to create a qcow2 image format, but it doesn't look like it is supported. Does anybody know how to create a VM with a qcow2 image format?
When you create a blank disk with "qemu-img create -f qcow2 disk.qcow2 3700G", it indeed does create a qcow2 image. However, Virtual Machine Manager is unable to read these images, claiming that it is 15 megs or so in size (which is what it actually occupies in host disk space until you try and put a VM into it).
I have set up a virtual machine under VMware Player 3.1.2 in Debian. Operating system of this virtual machine is a Windows Server 2003. I would like to periodically test this Windows Server 2003 installation for viruses. Obvious solution would be to install an AV software under this Windows Server 2003 installation. However, I was wondering, is this possible to use NOD32 for Linux or clamav in order to test this Windows Server 2003 installation for viruses? Is NOD32 for Linux able to detect viruses inside the .vmdk file?

This device, and the CF card, are Linux based, and so the card has Linux partitions on it. I need to be able to clone this CF card, using a Windows computer, onto another CF card, to replace one that has failed in one of these devices. Neither Windows XP nor Vista is able to do anything with it.
I use Casper to clone Windows hard drives and partitions which are FAT32, NTFS, etc., but it does not recognize or work with Linux partitions. I need a simple, hopefully free or inexpensive, program that I can install on a Windows XP or Vista computer, which can clone the good Linux based CF card (which would be connected via a USB Reader, or a built-in Media reader) onto a brand-new unformatted CF card that I would buy, and similarly connected.

View 4 Replies View RelatedI need to clone a 160GB hard drive with Linux Mint 9 (not more than 10GB used) to a 30GB SSD that is partitioned carefully (aligned to cylinder boundaries) and is currently running Ubuntu (which I wish to overwrite with Linux Mint 9). The SSD has a /boot partition, / and swap. The source (160 GB) does not have a separate boot partition. Can anyone help me fill in the steps below? /dev/sdc will be the source (160GB) and /dev/sda is the target (with partitions 1,2 and swap on 5).
make a copy of /etc/fstab from the target drive before proceeding. Ready the target partitions. Can I reuse the existing destination partitions on the SSD? Ready the filesystems on each of the target partitions. /boot is ext2, / is ext4 and swap is already set up too. As I said, all contain data (Ubuntu) that I wish to overwrite. So what steps are needed here? Do I need to erase anything (files, etc.) before the copy/clone? next, use dd to copy MBR (right?) And exclude partition table:

I'm working on a SBC9261 board with touchscreen, running Linux 2.6.24./dev/ttyS0 is the standard output and /dev/tty0 is the console on the touchscreen.What I would like to do is to clone the standard output to the touchscreen, so the console would be displayed twice.
