Alright story is: i needed apache tom cat to work on my project, i don't wish to install it in ubuntu so i can keep my system clean and fast. I installed virtual box OSE. Do i need a disk to run? Cause it says "Fatal no bootable medium found system halted" Edit: alright i inserted my winxp disk and now it is installing, i need to know if any change i make will damage my computer? Since i allocated only 10GB to this virtual disk, now it is formatting it in NTFS...i hope it won't have any conflict with ubuntu's ext4 file system.

I have downloaded a bootable DOS iso CD image that I have burnt to CD and can boot from.I need to add more disk checking utilities to the CD iso image. The DOS disk checking utilities are designed to be run from a floppy disk, but my laptop does not have a floppy drive, so CD-ROM is an alternative, if I can remaster the existing iso image file? Can I mount the DOS iso file and then add other programs to it, and then remaster the updated iso, and make a new CD-ROM to boot from with the added tools?
View 3 Replies View RelatedI have installed Centos 5.4 and then on top of that i have been installing many softwares over the time ( like pbx system , web console , billing etc.) and now it has come to a quite stable stage. the problem is i have to move this installation to another machine with different config etc. even have to install it on multiple systems. the idea is to create a bootable linux iso of the current machine with all the softwares so i can simply put it in a different machine and make it install and run without much fuss. is creating a linux appliance the only solution ? or is there any way to backup the current machine in an iso format and then install it on another machine? also i would like to make this completely hardware independent.

In Bios there are 'Native' and 'Legacy' options for 'ATA/IDE Mode' and if I select 'Native', 'Configure SATA as' option is enabled with options 'AHCI' and 'IDE'. I reinstalled fedora with all possible configuration, Legacy mode, Native + AHCI, Native + IDE but got the same error when booting. I have also tried options; MBR on /dev/sda and first boot record on /dev/sda5.

Is it possible to mount a virtual disk image like qcow2 as a rw filesystem? I would assume guestfs could do it, but I couldn't figure it out from the man page. Basically I want to be able to read and write to the contents of a Windows virtual machine, just like I mounted a physical disk.
View 4 Replies View RelatedI have a laptop with Redhat 5 installed and a Windows 7 Virtual Machine. The laptop is connected to the internet but I cant access any web pages in firefox - it just comes up with Server Not Found (tried all different sites). I know the internet connection is good as if i go into my windows VM firefox works normal. Ive checked the network settings and tried setting to 'no proxy' and automatically detect but nothing seems to work. Ive uninstalled and reinstalled firefox and still get the same.
Ive tried both wired and wireless but makes no difference. Seems really weird that it works in the Windows VM but not in Redhat which its booting into.
I downloaded 64-bit version of Fedora 11 and burned the iso on my dvd. When I rebooted the machine it booted up from the dvd but it showed an error message that kernel "image not found". And it stops there itself. Can someone show me some way except downloading the iso again?

I've set up the first 4GB SSD (sda1) as / ext4 partition and the second 16GB SSD (sdb1) as an encrypted /home partition. sdc1 is the USB stick and sdd1 is a 16GB SD card in the card reader. They are not used in the installation. I realize, that the 4GB / partition will probably be too small etc, but I'm just trying to get the installer to go the package selection page.
After fixing network issue (change to vanilla kernel) and configuring alsa sound drivers, I realise that I may be spending some time doing some more config before putting my machine to hardcore use!
So, is it possible or can anyone recommend a program that can do an image of the hdd which I can save on an external drive and install/reinstall it on hard drive if i ever need to?
is it possible to setup a DHCP server using the loopback or a virtual interface? I installed Sun VirtualBox on my fedora system and want to try and kickstart them from within the same box on a virtual network. Is this possible and has anyone done it? View 5 Replies View RelatedI'm trying to setup and configure a server entirely with text only run mode 3 on a virtual machine so I can redo my current live server. I'm now trying to set up the firewall of the system using iptables. I've read up on it and came up with the following:
-clear all rules
#iptables -F
-set default policy rules
#iptables --policy INPUT DROP
#iptables --policy FORWARD DROP
[Code]....
Everything above worked for me but just out of interest I looked at my live server which was configured using a GUI. I ran iptables-save and it was pretty much the same but its port open lines read like this:
#iptables -A INPUT -p tcp -m state --state NEW --dport 80 -j ACCEPT
so finally my question is do I really need the "-m state --state NEW"? Wouldn't having that drop established connections on those ports? I'm just confused as to what exactly the NEW state is doing and would it make a difference if I didn't include it.
I completed my dvd-burn for Fedora 10. I booted up from the dvd, and the automatic 10 second installation text shows up. The setup loads the images, and proceeds to a loading bar. After the loading bar I saw an underscore. That all I see.. I wait a couple of minutes and I still only see an underscore. This is my first time trying to install a Unix type O.S. Are there any commands I need to run for the installation to move forward? Or is there some type of corruption in the installation?

How am I supposed to do this?
the things i've tried:
1. Created an asm bootloader code that calls a c function which just prints a hello message.
2. Compiled both and linked them using LD command using a .ld file available.
Steps followed from http://wiki.osdev.org/Bare_bones.I get a kernel.bin file which is of ELF format. I've set up a tftp server using tftpd32 tool and created the necessary pxelinux.cfg files.
Now how do i create a bootable kernel image out of the elf file. The steps given in the above website to create an image doesn't help.

View 1 Replies View RelatedI have a system built and running in exactly the basic configuration I want, with my recompiled kernel, extra packages, special drivers, everything works, life is good. What I want to do is take this exact setup and create an image I can copy onto a bootable USB stick. Is there a way to essentially take the contents of my hard drive and copy that onto a USB stick and then boot directly from that? The use case behind this is that I am building an embedded system of which I may have hundreds of boxes with identical hardware and software configurations. Instead of hard drives, I am going to use USB sticks for cost efficiency and maintenance. My idea is that when it's time to upgrade, I could just image a hundred new sticks and go out and swap them.
My issue is that a standard LiveCD install gets me maybe 25% of the way to a finished system. I need to recompile the kernel for realtime support with my CPU, add some fidgety drivers for some specific hardware, and install a whole bunch of additional packages. I suppose I could create a makefile(s) to replicate all the manual steps of the buildout but that seems like a lot of unnecessary complexity IF I can just image that running system as it is.
