View 2 RepliesIs it possible to mount a virtual disk image like qcow2 as a rw filesystem? I would assume guestfs could do it, but I couldn't figure it out from the man page. Basically I want to be able to read and write to the contents of a Windows virtual machine, just like I mounted a physical disk.

What i need is to mount several directories from any other partiton (or file system) as a new merge file system that can grow or decrease depending on the free space. As if it was a dinamic RAID,so i can work with huge files distributed over the partitions mounted.
Ejemp: /mnt/sda1/dir_raid1 + /home/dir_raid2 + /mnt/sda3/dir_raid3 ---> /mnt/RAID/
mhddfs and unionfs <---- are not the solution im searching (cant use huge files)
I have set up a virtual machine under VMware Player 3.1.2 in Debian. Operating system of this virtual machine is a Windows Server 2003. I would like to periodically test this Windows Server 2003 installation for viruses. Obvious solution would be to install an AV software under this Windows Server 2003 installation. However, I was wondering, is this possible to use NOD32 for Linux or clamav in order to test this Windows Server 2003 installation for viruses? Is NOD32 for Linux able to detect viruses inside the .vmdk file?

I was wondering if it is possible to use the Live CD and then do the restore through Ubuntu. I know it's probably a long shot but thought I'd ask anyway.

View 4 Replies View RelatedI tried installing Ubuntu 10.04 WS on my PC but it did not see any disks to install on. I believe this is because my drives are all configured as RAID. My mobo is an Asus M3A78-EMH HDMI AM2+ socket with an Athlon 2X 5000+ CPU. The chipset is AMD 780G. I have the BIOS configured for RAID drives and I already run Win XP x32 and Win 7 x64 on it. My boot drive is configured as 'RAID READY' and I have 2 RAID 1 disks consisting of pairs of SATA drives.
From what I have researched it seems that with some tuning it should be possible to install Ubuntu 10.04 but I have little Linux experience and don't want to mess up my existing drives. I have installed Linux before a few times and run it but never with RAID. Is anyone aware of an existing disk image that I will be able to install from on my system or would it be possible for someone to create one for me to use?

View 2 Replies View RelatedMy laptop boot up time increased considerably (10 seconds) after allocating a virtual drive for virtualbox guest. The guest installation did not work so i removed it along with the virtual disk. Now everytime when i boot to ubuntu, after inputting my password in the login screen, it takes much longer to load the system. And during the loading time the disk activity indicator light blinks indicating the harddisk is actually busy loading the system.
I decided to search around for a possible answer and force reprofiling ureadahead does the trick Now boot time is back to what it used to be

View 1 Replies View RelatedI have a dvd I want to boot from, on a certain laptop. The problem is this:
DVD will NOT boot in laptop [1] with this DVD.
DVD WILL boot ok in laptop [2] with this DVD.
- Conclusion, DVD is ok.
* laptop [1] and laptop [2] boots other media in the cd/dvd drive ok.
I can see all files on DVD in both laptops. As a workaround I copied the DVD image off the DVD drive to internal hard disk with following command and the result was as follows:
- result of dd command
# dd if=/dev/sr0 of=/dev/sda4
6298816+0 records in
6298816+0 records out
3224993792 bytes (3.2 GB) copied, 473.18 s, 6.8 MB/s

View 1 Replies View RelatedI have an issue with a PC (XP pro)that had a virus which deleted all the files in the windows/system32/config folder. I first attempted to do the second repair option on the XP cd and it wasn't available. So unable to boot to windows and run an anti-virus; I put the hard drive in my external enclosure. Plugged it into my ubuntu laptop and removed the virus infected files using Clam. I then tried using the XP cd in the first repair to copy the files only to get an access denied msg.
I would like to just copy necessary data from the drive with XP pro installed and then reinstall XP and give the PC back to the owners. However the person that did the original install used a volume license cd and I unfortunately have no more CD keys and hate using cracks in certain business environments. So I came up with good idea at the time to setup XP pro in virtual box and then copy the files from there however those files are in use when the machine is running and can't be copied. So is there anyway to mount the Virtual hard drive and copy the files while the virtual machine is off?
I'm running out of space in wubi. Online wubi help didn't help much since they suggest creating extra virtual disk space(similar to having a diffrent partition i guess) .None of them speak about increasing the size of /root disk space(or root.disk). I store all files in space shared with windows or external disk and use ubuntu only to install and use softwares and browsing. So how do increase the available space for installing more softwares?

I had set up 4 virtual machines on centos 5.5 system where I directed the image locations to an external storage. I have lost the image files in the storage, but I have the image files that were copied from the virtual machine image location. I want to put up the same system on the same computer by copying these backup images. However, when I copy the image file to the same exact location and start the corresponding virtual machine I get "no bootable disk" error. When I increase the size of the image using "qemu-img" commands, I can get rid of this error, but get "error reading disk" error. Is there a way to overcome these problems, or is it not possible to restore a virtual machine by copying the machine image file under ..../xen/images?

How to attach my XP to this VM ?
I'm trying to set up a virtual machine environment in Centos5.5. My hardware fully supports virtualization, and I'm running qemu as the hypervisor with Virtual Machine Manager as the GUI to manage and create VMs. Host hardware is a Dell PowerEdge T710, with a quad core Xenon processor and four 1TB disks in a raid 6 array.
Within the Virtual Machine Manager when trying to create a new VM, there is the option to not "allocate entire virtual disk now". What format is created when you "allocate entire virtual disk now" and when you don't?
I want to create a qcow2 image format, but it doesn't look like it is supported. Does anybody know how to create a VM with a qcow2 image format?
When you create a blank disk with "qemu-img create -f qcow2 disk.qcow2 3700G", it indeed does create a qcow2 image. However, Virtual Machine Manager is unable to read these images, claiming that it is 15 megs or so in size (which is what it actually occupies in host disk space until you try and put a VM into it).
I have a 8GB SD card formatted as FAT32. I would like to move this disc image onto it. If there were a way to compress this, that would be great. Or, if I could reformat the card so that it could handle files larger than 4 GB, that would be great too. But I don't know how to do either one of these. Also, when I try to mount to the iso, it fails. Attempting with Archive Manager, it says "CD-ROM is NOT in ISO 9660 format".
View 1 Replies View RelatedIf you have a hard disk image (including partition table, multiple partitions,...), is it possible to let Linux treat it as a regular hard disk?
By "regular hard disk" I mean I would like to have the image show up as, for instance, /dev/hdx and its partitions as /dev/hdx1,...
(I know I can mount one of the partitions in the image using "mount -o loop, offset=x ..." but I don't really like this option.)
