Fedora :: Mount Virtual Disk Image?

Sep 28, 2010

Is it possible to mount a virtual disk image like qcow2 as a rw filesystem? I would assume guestfs could do it, but I couldn't figure it out from the man page. Basically I want to be able to read and write to the contents of a Windows virtual machine, just like I mounted a physical disk.

What i need is to mount several directories from any other partiton (or file system) as a new merge file system that can grow or decrease depending on the free space. As if it was a dinamic RAID,so i can work with huge files distributed over the partitions mounted.

Ejemp: /mnt/sda1/dir_raid1 + /home/dir_raid2 + /mnt/sda3/dir_raid3 ---> /mnt/RAID/

mhddfs and unionfs <---- are not the solution im searching (cant use huge files)

General :: Mount - How To Use Qcow2 Disk Image

Dec 27, 2010

I have a large qcow2 formatted disk image, which I use as storage. Often I need to move data to and from this disk image. I mount the disk using the qemu-nbd tool as follows:

modprobe nbd max_part=63
qemu-nbd -c /dev/nbd0 /host/disk100G.img
mount /dev/nbd0p1 /home/rup/disk

But disk access fails every now and then in the midst of some I/O operation with an "Input/output error". At that point I have to manually unmount the disk and re-mount it so that I can run the program again:qemu-nbd -d /dev/nbd0umount joborkhaki/What could be the reason for this? Is there a better tool that I can use to maintain a qcow2 disk image?

General :: Auto-mount Virtual Machine Locations When VMware Image Finishes Loading?

Jun 20, 2011

I mount a few locations from a VMware virtual machine, but currently every time I start up VMware I need to re-mount the locations once the VMware image has started up fully, which gets tedious. I'd like to be able to mount them automatically when VMware is started.

I generally double-click the .VMX file (which is associated with VMware Player) to launch the virtual machine, but once it has finished loading I would need to run the mount commands manually or execute a bash script that does it.

Is there any way you can think of to have it done automatically? One way I can think of is to start my virtual machine by running a script that starts VMware player, sleeps for a minute or so, then runs the mount command - but setting the right sleep interval would be difficult because this varies a fair bit - and overall, it's a solution that's kinda icky and that I'd like to avoid if there's some better option.

I would like to periodically test this Windows Server 2003 installation for viruses. Obvious solution would be to install an AV software under this Windows Server 2003 installation. However, I was wondering, is this possible to use NOD32 for Linux or clamav in order to test this Windows Server 2003 installation for viruses? Is NOD32 for Linux able to detect viruses inside the .vmdk file?

General :: Unable To Mount Fat16 Disk Image?

Aug 2, 2010

I am having a rather strange issue. I have windows 98 installed into a disk image that I use bochs to boot it with. I want to transfer some files to the image but now I am unable to mount it. I will attach the drive to the loopback device but when I go to mount I get wrong fs type bad option ... etc.

The command I used to mount was

Code:
#mount -t vfat /dev/loop0 /media/loopdisk
cfdisk shows it ok as does fdisk. shows as a fat16 file system. When I attempt to check it for errors using fsck.msdos I get

Code:
# dosfsck 3.0.6 04 Oct 2009, FAT32, LFN
# Logical sector size (64543) is not a multiple of the physical sector size.

When I boot into windows 98 in bochs and check the disk it tells me there is no problems.

I've been googling and there are alot of results but I'm still having trouble.

I don't remember if I used the default LVM partition scheme or if I did a FS. In fdisk it says linux partition but that's it.

I did the dd and cat method but fsck is complaining like usual.

I dd a file called tempfile and the append it using cat tempfile >> my.img then did resize2fs -f but it error out with "Bad Magic number on super block."

Ubuntu Security :: Mount The Image Or Extract The Image To Another Drive?

Feb 16, 2011

I was given a forensic Image which I now know is a DD image of the drive (Vista) and am trying to mount the image or extract the image to another drive. I'm not sure of the extention type or if the image is a partition or the entire drive. I think it is the entire drive.

Is it possible to mount a DD image to a device. If I can't do that I just want to extract the files to run some programs against the drive. Can I view the files under Ubuntu or do I have to remove the drive and stick it into a Vista computer.

I purchased a second drive today and was hoping the command line would be something simple.

Or am I on the wrong track, should I be doing this all in a windows environment. The reason I picked ubuntu was because of the reporting tools.

Fedora Installation :: F13 "Tried To Mount Image #1?

Aug 31, 2010

I have installed numerous Linuxes and Fedoras. This is the 3rd F13 install - other 2 were no problem! This one has me stumped. I have tried dvd install, boot.iso on usbkey, netinstall on usb and dvd. This problem crops up each time! I always manage to get the disks reformated and partitioned but no further. If I go to screen F2, everything seems to check ok - the usb is mounted and visible. The partitions are mounted under sysimage, a loop device is mounted under runtime (cant determine what though).

All the boots result in "Select Partition" - looking for install.img. With dvd does not list dvd drive as an option. With usb - firstly search sda1 (no usb option appears initially), fails then show the usb drive! and it finds the install img! All strange. Logs all show that all devices are recognized and mounted (or mountable) and viewable. sysimages are all writable! (can copy files between etc )..

Anaconda last message was "transferring install image to install target". What is transferred and where should it be? What needs to be mounted can it be done manually from screenF2?? Is it possible to get more info out of anaconda?? Is there some way of bypassing that "tried " message as the only way out is a reboot!! I am getting desperate - I need this machine working for a field job very soon.

Fedora :: Yum Search / Info - Database Disk Image Malformed

Aug 25, 2010

Any time I've tried to run 'yum search' or 'yum info' I end up getting a error "database disk image is malformed"

Code:
$ yum info postgresql
Loaded plugins: presto, refresh-packagekit
Error: database disk image is malformed
I am, however, able to update and install software without this error occuring.

I've tried the 'yum clean all", "yum clean metadata", "yum clean datacache", and rebuilding with "yum makecache", but still this problem crops up. As I understand it, the error message comes from something possibly not having been updated properly in one of the sqlite databases that yum stores information in. I probably could fix it if I knew which sqlite db that 'yum search' and 'yum info' hit.

Fedora Installation :: Error W/ F13 Install To HD During Copying Of Live Image To Disk

Aug 25, 2010

I'm a Linux newbie and are trying to install F13 from bootable USB onto the HD of a DELL mini netbook. I've followed the install wizard's defaults including the "Use All Space option." The install errors out at about 20% of progress during the "Copying live image to hard drive" process. The error dialog is as followed:"There was an error installing the live image to your hard drive. This could be due to bad media. Please verify your installation media..." and it comes with options to Exit installer or Retry. I have since retried and restarted several times and still came to the same error. FYI, I've initially attempted to install F13 to the HD over an existing Windows XP.

General :: Mount Nfs: Mount(2) Input/Output Error, Virtual Box Involved?

Feb 11, 2010

I'm not really sure this is the right category for this post...

I've been thinking and reading but I really don't find a solution, and this is why I decided to post here. I'm not a newbie using Linux but I know absolutely nothing about nfs and related stuff. If explanations are not clear/precise I'm sorry and absolutely open to explain myself better (I'm really desperate, at this point).

I'm running a Debian in a VirtualBox inside a RHEL5. To supply space to the virtual machine I'm trying to mount a disk (? maybe not?) that I created in the RHEL.

In RHEL: I created a directory /some/path/dir and I granted access to it from the VM (edit /etc/exports file and restart the nfs service)

In Debian: I created a directory to be used as mounting point (mkdir /other/nice/path/dir) and I tried to mount (mount -t nfs -v redhat:/some/path/dir /other/nice/path/dir). What happens next is the following:

mount.nfs: timeout set for Thu ...
mount.nfs: text-based options ...
mount.nfs: mount(2): Input/output error
mount.nfs: mount system call failed

Now, this Input/output error is too vague to trace where the problem is, but I really have no idea about how to go more in depth (are there logs somewhere? What should I look for? ... ...).
