View 1 RepliesHas anyone gotten XP Mode to work in Win 7- while Win 7 is running in VBox? Everything installs seemingly error free- XP Mode, and the two updates. I then start Win XP Mode. The computer goes through 25 minutes or so of setting up XP mode for 'first use'. At the end, a message appears: "Could not complete setup. Please try again". In Win7, I've removed XP Mode from Programs and Features, and reinstalled. No change.
Using 11.3, Oracle/Sun VBox 3.2.8 with guest additions, and Win7 Ultimate with the three required downloads (after selecting Win7 Ultimate 32bit and English) Download Windows XP Mode
I have Fedora configured using XP and VBox. I am now out of space. As anyone run into this issue? What do you recommend that I do to transfer my current Fedora contents to a new virtual file?

I'm installing my first new Dell SCSI controller card (PERC 6) and storage array (MD1000) into my first RHEL server. I've done this plenty of times in a Windows world, but never in Linux. I know the BIOS will pick up the SCSI card and I can go into that during the boot screen to set up how i want the array (RAID5), but once Linux comes up, will it automatically find and mount the drives, or do I have to do something?

View 1 Replies View RelatedI've just put together a Centos 5.2 system using an old Future Domain SCSI card which would allow me to hook up an external DAT drive. On its BIOS screen it advertises itself as an AHA-2920 which should be handled by the aic7xxx module. However, the module doesn't even get loaded unless I force it in /etc/rc.modules and even then it doesn't pick up the card.

In my understanding, the way /proc/scsi/scsi gets populated, /proc/paritions also gets populated in the same fashion. i.e. the description for first entry of /proc/scsi/scsi can be seen in the first entry of /proc/partitions and same for rest.
So, With this assumption, in my project, I used to relate first entry of /proc/scsi/scsi with first entry of /proc/partitions to get its total size and same for all entries.
But, I observed some differences in following scenario, where
1) The first 4 entries in /proc/scsi/scsi are SAN luns attached to my system and for which the actual device names in /dev/ are sda, sdb, sdc and sdd.
2) The last 4 entries are the internal HDDs on same system. In /dev/, their respective device names are sde, sdf, sdg & sdh.
(Output attached at end of the thread)
But in /proc/partitions, the device order is different.
You can see their respective sizes in /proc/partition output as well.
So, my question is, in this particular scenario, I can't relate the first entry of /proc/scsi/scsi with first entry of /proc/partition. i.e. scsi0:00:00:00 is not /dev/sde, because it is actually /dev/sda.
It seems that my assumption is wrong in this scenario.
Is there any way or mechanism to figure out actual device name for an entry in /proc/scsi/scsi in /dev/ directory?
How can my application should relate /proc/scsi/scsi entries with their respective device names and sizes?
When I enter "cat /proc/scsi/scsi" I'm returned with "cat: /proc/scsi/scsi: No such file or directory". I've tried this on two different installs on two different machines.

Bonus points will be awarded if no closed source software is required.
Some of our workstations have LTO's attached and they seem to drop off every now and again, the only thing which picks them up again (besides a reboot) is the famous rescan-scsi-bus script from here
The thing is that I'd like non-root users to be able to run this script, which in turn needs root to /proc/scsi/scsi

View 9 Replies View RelatedI have an ubuntu server that I am using as a gateway router. I have 2 nics in the machine and am using iptables to run the NAT.I now have a need to provide several machines on the inside of the network with their own public IP. So I created a virtual interface on the the WAN card and attempted a 1:1 nat across it, but it's not working. The virtual interface isn't even responding to pings. If I ping the ip of the virtual interface from the outside, it doesn't work. If I run a tcpdump on the interface, I can see ICMP request packets but no replies. Watching the same dump while pinging the non-virtual interface IP results in both request and reply packets. What's stranger the inbound ICMP request packets on the virtual interface seem to be hit or miss. Sometimes when I ping it, I can see the request packets hitting the interface, sometimes I get nothing.

View 14 Replies View RelatedI don't care for domain 'authentication' by an "Authority". I don't trust no one, so CA's to me are as trustworthy as the gypsy in the park.
I can use a self-signed certificate, but the problem is most browsers makers are Fn idiots that say the connection is not secure, when it actually is, but because I did not folk out cash, it makes my website look bad. I can understand the need for a 3rd party to verify the domain host to prevent man in the middle attacks, but I do not care for this.. and browser makers should take more responsibility and introduce different padlocks for types of authentication, rather than saying "this connection is encrypted, but not secure because its self-signed". What a load of horse s***!
How many times does people stop to read certificate authoraties? I sure don't. I only care weather or not the connection has been encrypted.. so, I am looking for a way for simply providing encryption for my website.
From what I understand, when you submit a CSR to a CA, it includes the private key, meaning that the CA would be able to see the encrypt data, should they get hold of it. This is not acceptable for me.
Is there anything other way to use encryption other than the SSL model that is used typically amongst HTTPS browsers today?

View 5 Replies View RelatedI have Vbox 4.0.4_OSE installed on my 11.4/KDE4.7 Laptop with Win7 and WinXP VMs installed. Generally runs well, although the Win7 VM seems to lock up on occasion if I ignore it for too long. Compared to having to reboot to Win7 to do the few things still stuck on Windoze, it is a GREAT solution.
Question: I have seen several forum items related to difficulty with dual boot systems and the installation of Win7SP1, regarding SP1s checking the MBR for the Win7 boot loader. Has anyone done a SP1 update to a VM on Vbox? It is sort of unclear what SP1 might see in the VM disk container associated with the VM. Since the initial load process for a new VM is time consuming, I thought I would ask first before blowing up my otherwise working Vbox system and then having to reload from scratch.
I keep losing my keyboard in Virtualbox. I "fix" it be reverting back to the host and then switching to the VM and it will be back. Googling brought up others having similar issues with Ubuntu, but no solution that I saw.My host is Jessie and client is Wheezy, both with Xfce. The mouse works just fine.

Added a second guest - Jessie 8.0 KDE 64 bit. Works, but no seamless display, mouse issue ...
So added inside guest:
non-X11 guest utilities + X11 guest utilities from the repositories
(These utilities are meant to be run inside the the virtual machine. They provide closer integration ...)
I simply don't know, how to run those utilities ...
What I get is
Code: Select all# systemctl --failed

● virtualbox-guest-utils.service loaded failed failed LSB: VirtualBox Linux Additions
● virtualbox-guest-x11.service loaded failed failed LSB: VirtualBox Linux X11 Additions
LOAD = Reflects whether the unit definition was properly loaded.
ACTIVE = The high-level unit activation state, i.e. generalization of SUB.
SUB = The low-level unit activation state, values depend on unit type.
2 loaded units listed. Pass --all to see loaded but inactive units, too.
To show all installed unit files use 'systemctl list-unit-files'.

How do I run those xxx VBox applications inside guest?
launching vBox lately pops-up this; but if I allow it to go ahead, I get this.. : the window has no end (!), no scroll bars nor any further info. If I first uninstall in Yast, will I lose all of my machines? Up until now these periodic updates have been a breeze, only sometimes needing a vbox setup afterwards to tweak the kernel

View 4 Replies View RelatedI put vbox on my wife's Dell Inspiron 6000 to play Netflix but the video won't play. After buffering it says there's an "internet connection problem". From what I've read that means the connection is too slow. Netflix works fine on my wired desktop (also Lucid+vbox) and on the same laptop booting into Windows (not VM). So I'm thinking there's a problem with vbox slowing the connection between the laptop's wireless and the VM?
I don't know if it will help with Netflix but 2D video acceleration is grayed out on vbox. Strangely, the 3D acceleration is fine and I can select it. If this is due to an unsupported video driver, can I change it?
Currently I have a 500gb drive with Ubuntu on half of it. The other half is a soon to be Win7 install. I just picked up an identical drive for real cheap last week and I am interested in advice for going about setting up a RAID 1 for redundancy. My first road block is do I want software or hardware RAID? Is this even possible with a dualboot system? If hardware RAID is the way to go does anyone have a particular brand or model they could recommend?

Obviously Toshiba is no help with Linux and win 7 forum even cautions against creating an extended partition. Oh out of the box this baby had 3 primaries, one a recovery and hidden. Just an FYI
