whenever I run my winxp VM image, I will still see the BIOS, but as soon as it begin to boot the hard disk, a black screen will just stay there and nothing else happens. Maybe I was too harsh on my virtual machine and it decided to break down. anyway, Im running on fedora 11 leonidas.Is there any way for me to repair my winxp.img file? or is there any way I can rescue the current situation
View 10 RepliesI had set up 4 virtual machines on centos 5.5 system where I directed the image locations to an external storage. I have lost the image files in the storage, but I have the image files that were copied from the virtual machine image location. I want to put up the same system on the same computer by copying these backup images. However, when I copy the image file to the same exact location and start the corresponding virtual machine I get "no bootable disk" error. When I increase the size of the image using "qemu-img" commands, I can get rid of this error, but get "error reading disk" error. Is there a way to overcome these problems, or is it not possible to restore a virtual machine by copying the machine image file under ..../xen/images?

My hardware fully supports virtualization, and I'm running qemu as the hypervisor with Virtual Machine Manager as the GUI to manage and create VMs. Host hardware is a Dell PowerEdge T710, with a quad core Xenon processor and four 1TB disks in a raid 6 array.
Within the Virtual Machine Manager when trying to create a new VM, there is the option to not "allocate entire virtual disk now". What format is created when you "allocate entire virtual disk now" and when you don't?
I want to create a qcow2 image format, but it doesn't look like it is supported. Does anybody know how to create a VM with a qcow2 image format?
When you create a blank disk with "qemu-img create -f qcow2 disk.qcow2 3700G", it indeed does create a qcow2 image. However, Virtual Machine Manager is unable to read these images, claiming that it is 15 megs or so in size (which is what it actually occupies in host disk space until you try and put a VM into it).
I mount a few locations from a VMware virtual machine, but currently every time I start up VMware I need to re-mount the locations once the VMware image has started up fully, which gets tedious. I'd like to be able to mount them automatically when VMware is started.
I generally double-click the .VMX file (which is associated with VMware Player) to launch the virtual machine, but once it has finished loading I would need to run the mount commands manually or execute a bash script that does it.
Is there any way you can think of to have it done automatically? One way I can think of is to start my virtual machine by running a script that starts VMware player, sleeps for a minute or so, then runs the mount command - but setting the right sleep interval would be difficult because this varies a fair bit - and overall, it's a solution that's kinda icky and that I'd like to avoid if there's some better option.
I have set up a virtual machine under VMware Player 3.1.2 in Debian. Operating system of this virtual machine is a Windows Server 2003. I would like to periodically test this Windows Server 2003 installation for viruses. Obvious solution would be to install an AV software under this Windows Server 2003 installation. However, I was wondering, is this possible to use NOD32 for Linux or clamav in order to test this Windows Server 2003 installation for viruses? Is NOD32 for Linux able to detect viruses inside the .vmdk file?

I have several others VMs with freeBSD, openBSD or Windows on it, but only ubuntu machine hes network problem after coping. I tried some other VM with ubuntu on it - same problem! I downloaded VM with ubuntu - same problem.I take a look into /etc/network/interfaces file and it looks just as it should (same as before coping) but ifconfig command returns parameters for lo only (before coping there was eth0 and lo).

The system boots to the point in the GUI where it checks the file system. It then suggests that I run fsck without the - a and -p options, and the drops to a sheel.
I enter the root pwd and then it says: "(Repair fileystem ) 1#" What do I do from there?

View 4 Replies View RelatedI have an issue with a PC (XP pro)that had a virus which deleted all the files in the windows/system32/config folder. I first attempted to do the second repair option on the XP cd and it wasn't available. So unable to boot to windows and run an anti-virus; I put the hard drive in my external enclosure. Plugged it into my ubuntu laptop and removed the virus infected files using Clam. I then tried using the XP cd in the first repair to copy the files only to get an access denied msg.
I would like to just copy necessary data from the drive with XP pro installed and then reinstall XP and give the PC back to the owners. However the person that did the original install used a volume license cd and I unfortunately have no more CD keys and hate using cracks in certain business environments. So I came up with good idea at the time to setup XP pro in virtual box and then copy the files from there however those files are in use when the machine is running and can't be copied. So is there anyway to mount the Virtual hard drive and copy the files while the virtual machine is off?

View 5 Replies View RelatedI'm having some issues with a windows virtual machine. The system is Fedora 11 and the virtual machine is Windows 2008 Server. If I start the virtual machine from the virtual machine manager, it only has a single cpu despite my setting it to eight. If I start the machine from the command line, I can get four cpus but not eight. In both cases windows seem to display the eight cpus in the device manager (or whatever program it is). It has been suggest that windows was imaged on a four core machine before being loaded on the eight core machine and that something in windows is maxing at four cores. But that doesn't explain why the virtual machine manager can only start one cpu. I just played around on my home machine with a fedora 10 live cd and it recognized the two cores on that machine and used them from the virtual machine manager without problem. Also upped it to three cpus without problem.
