Ubuntu :: Getting ISO (Disk Image) Onto SD Card

I have a 8GB SD card formatted as FAT32. I would like to move this disc image onto it. If there were a way to compress this, that would be great. Or, if I could reformat the card so that it could handle files larger than 4 GB, that would be great too. But I don't know how to do either one of these. Also, when I try to mount to the iso, it fails. Attempting with Archive Manager, it says "CD-ROM is NOT in ISO 9660 format".

I need little help on live disk creation and disk image backup.
Can I create live disk using my hard drive installation? If yes then, can I restore the fedora from the live disk to the hard drive. I mean to say that from that live disk can I install fedora again in my hard drive.
Second question is, if I create the disk image of my hard drive( including ntfs & FAT32 partition) , can I restore it in a blank drive. If so , then can os will be restored also?

If you have a hard disk image (including partition table, multiple partitions,...), is it possible to let Linux treat it as a regular hard disk?
By "regular hard disk" I mean I would like to have the image show up as, for instance, /dev/hdx and its partitions as /dev/hdx1,...
(I know I can mount one of the partitions in the image using "mount -o loop,offset=x ..." but I don't really like this option.)

I am having a problem finding a piece of software. I've searched a lot and still have not come up with an answer. My situation is as follows: I have an image file the I wish to restore to my USB flash drive but so far I've had no luck doing this. I was wondering if there was a program/command that could help me restore the disk image.

I need to make a disk image of Jaunty. Something like Acronis True Image or Norton Ghost in the Windows contingence. I have tried Remastersys and Ghost 4 Linux. The former simply created an ISO file, which is 1/10th of the size of my hard drive and I do not know how to restore my computer using the ISO. The latter seems to be stuck at 0% even after leaving my PC on for 4 hours and verifying that all the settings are correct.

I have a Windows XP pc that has become corrupted and I have a image of the drive that I want to restore, however Drive Image won't allow me to restore to the main system drive. I was wondering if it is possible to use the Live CD and then do the restore through Ubuntu. I know it's probably a long shot but thought I'd ask anyway.

I transferred some pictures from an SD card then 'shift+delete'ed them from the card. But I forgot to 'unmount' the card before I removed it from its slot. Now when I insert the card, it shows that there are a bunch of JPG images on the card but they cannot be viewed or deleted. Here is the output when I try to delete them:

Recently, I made a disk image of my external hard drive (as it had recently failed). I have yet to get it replaced, so I have a .dd file sitting on my computer. Now, I can mount the .dd file so I can access the files, but I cannot delete any of them. I want to be able to copy the files file by file to my normal folders and delete them from the backup file, as my disk isn't large enough for me to copy them all to the folders and just delete the entire file.
TL;DR = Can I/How do I delete individual files from a .dd backup.

I am having a problem with the USB Start up creator. I am down loading the Ubuntu Netbook Edition ISO image in the normal way.I then start up the Start Up Disk CreatorI then attempt to select the ISO image to add to the USB stick by clicking 'Other'I then locate the image and double click on it to select it.The image does not show up in the Source disc image section at all.I have tested the image in a virtualbox to confirm that it is not faulty and have tried two different downloads of the imag

I am installing Linux on some spare space I left over from my previous two Windows installations.
From within Linux, what's the most risk-free way of imaging these two partitions and saving them to a single image file or archive? I want to preserve the entire partition because I have no idea what I may have forgotten to copy. What is the most suitable program that can do this?
Is there any way to run the partition in a virtual machine at a later date?
After this is done, I want to delete those old partitions and extend my Linux ones.

I am trying to create a bootable USB drive. I go to System > Administration > Startup Disk Creator and click on 'Other' as the image I want to use is not listed. I then find the Chrome OS image and double click but then I return to the Disk Creator and it is still not listed as the source disk.
So does anybody know how to get around this so I can use this program to create a bootable USB drive, or another way that I can create one? I have used the Disk Creator to create a bootable version of Jolicloud (which is probably one of the worst Linux distros out there) before, but now it won't work.

Basically, I want to be able to create the perfect disk image of a CLEAN Ubuntu installed in a 30 gb partition. The problem is, if I install Ubuntu, then some drivers are installed automatically. I am using an old computer at the moment (my main is back at home) and I want to be able to create an image so that when I restore that image onto my main computer, it is not cluttered with drivers of the old computer. Is there a method that can be used for uninstalling drivers?
I am looking for the cleanest way to uninstall drivers, hopefully to the point where it will not leave any "residue" That is my first question. My second question (in general about disk image--I have never actually created nor restored an image): Can I create an image of partition A and restore the image on partition B? Basically, creating an image of one partition and restoring it on another partition. Or does it have to be restored on the original partition?
Also, what if it is the same scenario but partition B is a larger size? I know that if partition B is smaller, it cannot be done because the image is larger than the partition. Finally, can partition A be restored onto a different hard drive? I have yet to find answers of these questions on different forums in other sites (this is my 3rd try). I know that the Ubuntu community is extremely active and more than willing to share their knowledge.

When I created the disk, I specified dynamically growth, but when I tried to copy a file larger than the available disk space (500MB), a message showed up saying that it couldn't be done.
Image resizing was added with VirtualBox 4.0:
VBoxManage modifyhd

So why my VirtualBox 3.2.8 let me create the disk with dynamically growth option??

I need to expand a 15GB xen disk ".img" to 50GB, it's got centos as the guest O/S.
I've been googling and there are alot of results but I'm still having trouble.
I don't remember if I used the default LVM partition scheme or if I did a FS. In fdisk it says linux partition but that's it.
I did the dd and cat method but fsck is complaining like usual.
I dd a file called tempfile and the append it using cat tempfile >> my.img then did resize2fs -f but it error out with "Bad Magic number on super block."

Ok, so I have installed openSUSE 11.3 on my Lenovo Thinkpad T61p, setup the wireless adapter (why is this so difficult?) and installed a few applications. I do like the look of openSUSE but would like to check out a few other flavours. With my Windows 7 (can I say that here?) machines I can create a system image and a system restore CD with a fair amount of ease. Is there a similar process available for Linux?

My ubuntu partition is 19GB on 80GB hard disk. Then Reformat Hard Disk to 50GB and reload partimage image file. After reload the image file, using df to check Still 19GB.

I tried installing Ubuntu 10.04 WS on my PC but it did not see any disks to install on. I believe this is because my drives are all configured as RAID. My mobo is an Asus M3A78-EMH HDMI AM2+ socket with an Athlon 2X 5000+ CPU. The chipset is AMD 780G. I have the BIOS configured for RAID drives and I already run Win XP x32 and Win 7 x64 on it. My boot drive is configured as 'RAID READY' and I have 2 RAID 1 disks consisting of pairs of SATA drives.
From what I have researched it seems that with some tuning it should be possible to install Ubuntu 10.04 but I have little Linux experience and don't want to mess up my existing drives. I have installed Linux before a few times and run it but never with RAID. Is anyone aware of an existing disk image that I will be able to install from on my system or would it be possible for someone to create one for me to use?

this is in the wrong section, but I wasn't sure where to put it. Since the background to my problem is kind of long winded I've split this post into two sections: Short version of problem
I have a PC that has two internal drives: one drive (drive A) is empty, and the other (drive B) has a copy of windows vista installed. At the moment the PC boots from drive A. I'd like to transfer everything from drive A to drive B, so that this new disk will boot and behave nicely and windows will still function.
Is there any easy way to do this in ubuntu? I'm guessing I can use something like dd, but will this copy the boot sector and will I have to mess around with the partition table? Long version of the problem
Today I built a new PC for my dad with two internal drives. He was previously using vista on a laptop which died a few days ago, and I'd like to install vista on one disk of the new PC, and ubuntu on the other disk.
He has a licensed copy of Vista for his laptop, but it came as a "system restore" disk, and so I can't install vista directly onto the new PC. I have an identical laptop to his, so I took out the drive from his laptop, put it in my laptop, and did a "system restore" from the disk that came with the laptop. I then took out the drive from my laptop, and put this inside the new PC. It boots up fine, and I installed all the necessary drivers and etc to make windows work.
Now instead of using a slow/small laptop drive inside the new PC, I'd like to be able to clone the data on laptop disk and this onto one of the bigger/faster internal drives of the new PC. How can I do this from ubuntu, so that the new drive will boot windows?
I'm fairly certain it can be done using dd, but how do I make sure the information in the boot sector (or partition table) is correct for the new drive? I'm asking this because when I put my laptop drive into the new PC initially, I had connected it as an external drive, and when I tried booting from this there was an error, something like "Invalid partition table" (I think). I figured that when I did a "system restore" on my laptop, the drive was the only drive available, so this would be HDA, or SDA in the boot record of that disk. But when I added it to a system where other drives were available, it was no longer at that same location, so the boot loader couldn't find the data it was looking for to load the system.

I've been trying to load Debian with no success. Let me describe the issue:
1. I downloaded the iso image from the Debian pages. The md5sums match.
2. I changed the boot priority so the CDROM is accessed first.
3. Performed a cold boot and see a black screen that says Checking media [Fail]. I see this three times (HD is 4th on priority list) and then Mint loads.
Here is the odd part:
4. I can successfully load Arch from the cd/dvd drive.
5. I can also load Mint form the cd/dvd drive.
6. Cannot load Crunchbang from cd/dvd drive - same as when I try Debian.
I don't know how to proceed from here. I did erase my log files and performed another cold boot with Debian in hopes I might find some sort of error in them, but I really don't know what I am looking for. I saved the log files ....

I've installed Debian 5.0.7 on a partition of my hard-disk. Before I was using Slackware, so now I have in sda1 slack 13.0 and in sda2 debian 5.The problem is that Lilo can't find the ram disk image. I tried to insert in lilo.conf file the line "initrd=/deb5/initrd.img", but it doesn't work. I tried also to create from the installation cd an initramfs file and to make the link "/deb5/initrd.img" point to it.I've used the "lilo -v" command from slackware, so in / was /dev/sda1 with slackware 13 and in /deb5 was mounted /dev/sda2 with debian 5.

Is it possible to mount a virtual disk image like qcow2 as a rw filesystem? I would assume guestfs could do it, but I couldn't figure it out from the man page. Basically I want to be able to read and write to the contents of a Windows virtual machine, just like I mounted a physical disk.

Could anyone recommend a method of creating a full disk image. I have the Acronis bootable media, would this work to backup Linux partitions? I'm thinking that Acronis doesn't know or care what is written to the disk as it works at a lower level.

Anybody else get errors about the 11.2 disk image being bad? All the linux and windows software I use say it's not in the "proper" format. I also straight burned it as a bootable disk and it still doesn't work.
