Running 11.3 on an Acer aspire 2920 laptop. OS is up and running as are other applications. I have been trying to install a .wmv player (for CBT), (kaffeine, MPlayer, VLC) and also crossover for linux. In all cases I get "Installation of package xxxxx rpm failed".
The system downloads without problem but the issue appears to be on the actual installation side.
I've installed FreeBSD (sdc1) and DesktopBSD (sdc4). When I try to boot DesktopBSD it boots FreeBSD.here is menu.lst

I guess the chainloader boots 1st ufs slice and ignores the other. I've installed GrUB in FreeBSD and when I try to boot with different menu 'configfile /boot/grub/menu.lst' it returns error 17. This is probably due to inability reading ufs.
I suspect this is a 'new Grub' problem. I installed OpenSuse 11.2 from DVD into one (sda10) of several partitions (the others containing other operating systems):-

I use NT Boot Loader for the multi-booting on the basis of chain-loading the boot sector of Linux partitions. (It is not destroyed by MS re-installations; and is actually very easy to use). I also have an older Grub shell boot floppy which can do likewise:- root (hd0,x)chainloader +1 boot FWIW I found the disc partition & boot loader parts of the installation a nightmare. Difficult to know what it is going to do; and I am sure it *did* fiddle with parts I asked it to avoid. Horribly, it did *not* make me a dedicated Suse boot floppy like I checked. (This is always the safest boot option for a new install: it leaves the present boot system intact, and provides an independant way of loading your latest. You can refine things later). I had also checked to have the boot sector on the *root partition*.
I have never been able to get into the Suse. NT Loader does not like the partition boot sector. Nor does (an older) Grub from its boot floppy. I have tried the DVD in 'system repair' mode, when it finds things wrong and corrects them, same next time... It offers a way of directly booting a selected system; that did not work.
Any suggestions? I can provide more precise error msgs, but it is tedious; and system repair from DVD dicey. I feel that *the partition boot sector is not being properly set up*.And I want to be able to make a dedicated boot floppy; how? I have an identical problem with Ubuntu, which makes me think it is related to the 'new' Grub.
I've setup a dualboot-system. SUSE 11.2 starts automatically and works well all the time.
But when I want to use XP (yeah, sometimes I do that...), in about 40% of all cases it won't be loaded when chosen in GRUB. Just a black screen without anything else.Then I need to restart and in the 2nd trial it works!
I just upgraded from 11.2 to 11.4 and the installation/upgrade worked just perfect. I than followed the instructions in the "New User How To/FAQ", "Multimedia and restricted format" post. I was following the instruction in the 11.4 section. I added the additional repositories as explained. I then was on the section where it talks about going into software management and selecting the "Packman" repository and clicking to "switch systems packages" to the versions in this repository (packman). I than click this link and the "warning" screen appears and I am present with conflict resolution after conflict resolution dialog. It just seems that there are some many conflicts, it just seems wrong and I canceled.
The installation/upgrade appears to have worked just fine. My mail is there, audio and dvd play back worked the first try after the upgrade. I am not clear if this is what I should expect or their is something wrong or if I even need to complete this step for a successfully installation.
I can't install vlc on suse 11.0. Even after add repo. Or can I install old vlc?

I try to install Ubuntu upgrade I get errors Failed to fetch http://us.archive.Ubuntu.com/Ubuntu/...ntu3.7_all.deb. could not resolve [url]....And many more similar to this one I'm using my android to type so I can't copy all of them.My log in screen is black with a cursor it started when my update failed to install properly.I use an Intel procceser, 512mb ram, intergrated Intel video card, 1.6ghz And uh 80gb harddrive.
View 9 Replies View RelatedI've had this issue since OpenSUSE 10.5 and Firefox 2.x. Now I'm on OpenSUSE 11.2 and Firefox 3.5.6. Here's the issue: I log into various sites to get my bank statements, utility bills, etc. They are all in PDF, and they open up acrobat reader and from there I save the bill as a permanent record. The first one I open opens fine. Subsequent sessions with subsequent providers (banks, whatever) opens up a new window as if to show me the PDF, but no PDF is there. Status on the window shows "done." No error messages. I have to shut firefox down, restart, log in again, and then it downloads fine. It's getting annoying.

First of all, I'm having this issue: I am having trouble with GIT, it keeps timing out on me. github.com[0: 207.97.227.239]: errno=Connection timed out fatal: unable to connect a socket (Connection timed out). This is happening over a 24hr period so I think its something on my end.
Also, my apache directory is not visible on my local LAN to other machines. I can browse in Fedora, however. Even the machine hosting the VM can't see my var/www/http directory. I set permissions but I have a feeling its a network issue somwhere. BTW, I can ping the Fedora VM (192.168.0.17) from other machines.
I was trying to install git the other day and I system shutdown because of a power cut. Later, when i tried installing git, I get the following error message. In fact, I am not able to install any .deb packages. I get the same error when I try installing them

I found out why, because I cannot communicate with it at all, other than through ethernet. I'm not sure what the problem is. View 2 Replies View RelatedI have a windows machine (in a domain) and I have created 2 Virtual Machines with Suse 11.2 installed on them.Now, I want to share a folder in windows to both Suse images. I am succesfully able to do that.I used: mount -t cifs -o user..... command to mount it at /mnt/win on my linux and succesfully able to work with it.
Now, I want a user in my Linux box (both Linux images)to be able to write to the shared folder in windows (actually both linux images will write to the shared folder but it is based on acquairing locks and releasing them to be able to use the shared folder on windows).
I tried etc fstab and lot other options but my efforts were in vain.Simply put - I need a user in my linux box (suse 11.2) to be able to write to a windows shared folder.

View 3 Replies View RelatedI have been using linux for about a year and have run into a new problem I am unable to solve. It started when I attempted to install some packages I needed to get VirtualBox to run VMs. I am on Jessie.
I am unable to install various packages, including gedit, aptitude etc. I do not think it is a problem with my sources.list as my laptop has the same sources.list and I am not encountering the same problems on it. Packages will not install any dependencies. -f install isn't doing anything for me.

Here are the messages appears on terminal. I can reach those URLs by browser and manually download them. But when I try to install them on terminal or via package managers, simply my attempt fails.. What would be the problem here?
I am not able to install any package using software manager. I make sure that I remain online throughout the process. When I select any software package to install, a window appears that asks for the authentication code. After entering the code, no progress(in any form) takes place and the dialog box remains idle. The same thing happened when I tried to install cheese, netbeans, gcc, eclipse, build-essential, g++, codeblocks and many other such software packages. I would like to state that this problem is persisting from past two days. Earlier I was able to install software packages using software manager and I had already installed about 10 software packages before this problem actually came into notice.

I have an old German laptop that currently has Win2K installed, and I would now like to replace Windows with Linux on it. The computer boots the initial CD fine and gives me a number of installation choices. If I do not add a "root=/dev/hda1" to the parameters it stops the installation with a "Kernel panic: VFS: Unable to mount root fs on 08:01" and if that line is there the error message changes to 03:01.
Is this because the hard drive is already formatted to NTFS? Is there a way to delete the partition and create a new one from the Linux installation disks?
I have driver DVD for ASUS motherboard. This DVD has drivers (motherboard and audio) for Linux, how do I install these packages.

After installing the Ubuntu i opened update manager and started the updates and after half hour, some of the updates were done but the sound and multimedia package was not installed. I cannot get package installer, either Synaptic, Ubuntu Center, sodo aptitude install or plain double clicking on .deb files I have already downloaded on my PC to work.I get this:dpkg was interrupted, you must manually run 'sudo dpkg --configure -a' to correct the problem.When I do(even after a clear)sudo dpkg --configure. Ubuntu goes and tries to mess up with my boot configuration. wtf does installing a package have to do with messing up my lilo? I get this regardless of how I try to install the package and it makes no sense(ok, If I do this graphically, I get the same errors from a widget window)
View 2 Replies View RelatedI installed natty finally on my laptop (T410 Lenovo) via an upgrade from maverick. I tested maverick thoroughly first, since I had to perform the upgrade over the network, due to issues with natty booting from DVD. The upgrade went fine to natty, the system came up and I was able to get on locally and install other packages, though I did notice from time to time a lag in network performance. I installed VNC server and started it, as well as other network related services. However, I am noticing a definite issue with the network support and I suspect the natty kernel. The configuration looks sound, ifconfig, netstat and other functions appear to display the correct information, at least what I had with maverick (which worked).
Has anyone else seen issues with natty and networking? The glass looks okay, though I am using xfce and frankly there is nothing new there to really force me to upgrade, its just that this is a new LT and if I can cold install natty right now, it will save me an upgrade later.
