Gnome is falling apart and I've had a lot of nagging problems that I couldn't overcome.I'm thinking of wiping the OpenSuse partitions and doing a clean install without wiping the windows partition.I initially setup using the 11.0/XP dual boot FAQ in the How To forum.I have my Home directory backed up on an external HD. Might try KDE next go-round or KDE & Gnome as separate users. I have 11.2 i586 installation DVD.
View 2 Replies View RelatedI just installed 11.3 and Gnome yesterday and all went well except that the system will not shut down, it simply reboots. I've tried shutting it down using halt and shutdown now as root and each time the machine reboots. I didn't have this problem with 11.1.
View 7 Replies View RelatedIf I click on the shutdown bottom (in my lower panel) I get an new window to choose if I really want to shut down or restart or suspend or hibernate. Under that alternatives there is an text that says: "[...] The system will automatically shut down in 60 seconds." Why is the text "60" not running down like a countdown? Can I set another (shorter) time for the automatic shutdown (10 seconds)? If so, where? Or shut I just make another bottom to shut down immediately?

I have OpenSuse 11.3 KDE installed in dual boot with Win 7. Have used Ubuntu in the past and remember that whenever I started my computer with Ubuntu, i had a black colored screen which showed various kernel options. So in short I was sure that the Ubuntu installation had updated itself. On the contrary, whenever I start Suse 11.3 KDE, it shows me just one option of Suse 2.6.34.7-0.7
I have doubts, is Suse up-to-date, and also there is mention of KDE 4.6 on kde.org website.
But my operating system information is as follows:
KDE: 4.4.4 (KDE 4.4.4) "release 3"
OS: Linux 2.6.34.7 -0.7 -default i686
System: openSUSE 11.3 (i586)
I have also seen that on 10th Mar 2011, Suse 11.4 will be realeased. Will update/ upgrade of this installation work in this direction?
Trying to install on a: Dell Precision T3500 OpenSuse 11.3 keeps showing the following message:
"Make sure CD number 1 is in your drive"
I ordered the DVD from the OpenSuse site, so they ARE NOT burned copies. I also tried burning images, the same problem happens. No matter what I do, it does not go beyond this message.
pm-hibernate and pm-suspend only work the first time after booting into runlevel 5. This behavior is reproducable. pm-hibernate starts out correctly but then hangs the system bevore it gets to save the image from memory to disk. The computer locks up and does not power down.
pm-suspend: on wake up there is no signal on the screen (pm-suspend called from X environment or text terminal shows same result). I spent some time reading information on s2ram s2disk and added the follwing options:
S2RAM_OPTS="-f" in
/etc/pm/config.d/00meine.config
(display adapter is GForce4 nvidia with the closed source nvidia driver for accel)
splash = n in
/etc/suspend.conf - to get some more information during the suspend / hibernate.
Any ideas to get pm-hibernate / pm-suspend to work more than one time after boot??? Hibernate would be a great start for daily work and for energy saving.
horstausdemwald PS: In runlevel 3 pm-hibernate works various times from a text terminal. Under the same condition pm-suspend leads to a scrambled text terminal after resuming (some help on this: using vga=normal in Grub). The computer continues to work - though without visual aid - when the text terminal is scarambled. For example Runlevel 5 can be called blindly from the text terminal.
Whenever I try to use a preload ISO from susestudio.com, it takes me about 5 tries to actually get it to install. I load it up in VirtualBox, and on the screen that warns "you are about to erase all data on /dev/sda, continue?", selecting "yes" will 80% of the time cause it to think you cancelled and waits 30 seconds before rebooting. Every now and then it decides to work, but sadly that's the exception and not the rule. If it makes any difference, the appliance I'm downloading is a custom one based on openSUSE 11.4 Minimal X with GNOME 3 installed on top of it.
View 1 Replies View Relatedi have a backtrack install that i would like to keep while installing suse for an everyday OS; i start the install process but when it gets to partitioning the hard drive, it doesnt seem to recognize anything already being on there; it just gives me the setup for suse, ie:
sda1 ext3 = OS sda2 or sda5 = swap. do i have to configure a partition scheme? i installed ubuntu on a desktop alongside windows very easily due to grub graphical install/partition; is there not a similar function for suse?
Hardware issue forced me to restore Win7. Installed EasyBCD to boot into openSUSE, no work. Boot puppy, it shows space where SUSE should be as unallocated space. I think Puppy doesn't see ext4 though. Can't boot live KDE off USB for some reason, though I originally installed from that exact medium. Tried ACPI=off and nomodeset. Error says trouble mounting clic filesystem, mounted as read only. Something like that. Then reboot 120secs, which it never actually does. I don't want to reinstall SUSE if I don't have to.
View 9 Replies View RelatedMain reason I am using openSUSE currently is because my Windows system's went bad. I haven't been able to easily restore and will probably have to do clean windows install. I want to make sure my entire openSuse system (application/OS setting/etc) backup so I can easily restore of it fast. Since this type of back takes awhile, I would preferably like do this while I am still logged into SUSE. I am where to disk cloning thing like clonezilla, but looks like I would need turn of my system entirely to get this done.
Currently my SUSE root and home are in a partition with another NTFS partition on my hard drive. I really don't want to use 'dd' to clone the entire hard disk. I would much rather store of required partitions in other locations. Hopefully, there is easy to get this done without too much of effort and time.

For some reason, every time I shut down and reboot my machine, the system time advances four hours. The local time here is EDT (-4hrs UTC). I have it set correctly in Yast and have the 'hardware clock is set to UTC' checked. However, for some reason, the next time I boot, the system time will be ahead four hours.
View 7 Replies View RelatedI have installed Suse on my Windows Vista 64bit machine a couple of times, but the last time I did it - after a disk change - presented some unanticipated problems. Prior to install, Windows Disk Management (whose output I was unable to paste into this question) showed that my disks were laid out as follows:

Disk 0 is a Seagate ATA drive, while Disk 1 is a Western Digital Ext HDD Usb Device. Looking back, I think I should have carved out a partition after M before installing Suse, but I was uncertain whether to make it a logical one or a primary, and in the past the installation has taken the 25 or so gig it needed from the last defined partition on disk 0. This time, however, it went after disk 1, and reformatted the entire drive, deleting about 300 gig of user data, including my system backup. What really suprised me is that it took up the entire drive: 2 gig for the swapfile, then a 20 gig partition, and all the rest for the third partition.
This is not what I would have expected. I especially would not have expected the installation to re-format user data. In any case, I did not want Suse on disk 1, so I reformatted the drive and then used my Partition Manager to rebuild the boot Mbr. So now, I am able to boot into windows, do not have Suse on my machine, but have lost critical data. My disks are now back to the way they were when I started (see above), except that drive F is now all free space, except for my latest backup. My question is how do I ensure, when I reinstall Suse, that it will choose disk0 for the installation and will not overlay any of the data that I have on that drive.
I have just downloaded a mirror copy of SUse 11.2 and formatted my hard drive, so i can install the linux OP. But it seems like that it is not readable or better to say the boot from CD-rom does not work! Am i on the right track here? How do i go by installing a Linux on a fresh hard drive?
View 2 Replies View RelatedI built a new pc and want to have Suse again. Unfortunately Suse installation does not recognize my CD/DVD device. So I boot from DVD select installation and a few moments later there's a popup 'make sure cd number 1 is in your drive'. I also did try to load other kernel modules but nothing helps. The only drive which is always recognized is floppy drive.
Here are some details about my system: Asrock P55M Pro board, Intel P55 chipset, 2 SATA HDD's, IDE NEC 2510 DVD writer, BIOS is set to AHCI due to Windows.
I tried following:
Use Suse DVD 11.0, 11.2, x86 or x64
Set BIOS to AHCI, IDE (compatible), IDE (enhanced)
DVD writer NEC was used in my former pc and did install 11.0 without probs.
Installing from HDD is new to 11.2 thus I copied the DVD to a directory. During Installation I can select the correct partition but suse is not able to find repositories.(?)
I have installed windows 7 in my laptop. i have only c drive with a memory space of 284mb. now i like to install suse 11 in c drive itself without distrubing windows 7. after installing i should be able to go for either windows 7 or suse 11 easily. i must have the both. I had partitioned windows 7 in fat. i had not use ntfs.
View 1 Replies View RelatedHave burned a DVD of 11.4 64bit and am trying to install alongside Windows 7. The boot from the disk starts, I get a SUSE splash screen and initial menu. I check install source (F4) is set to CDROM. When I then select "install" the kernel loads, but then it goes wrong. Whatever I do I get "No repository found". It's almost as though, having loaded the kernel from the DVD, the installer can no longer see the disk.

View 9 Replies View RelatedI have installed "open-SUSE 11.4" on a "500GB Free Agent External Hard Drive". I didn't have any problem in booting since last week that I booted it from my laptop. Also I did it before several times from then when I try to boot it e.g. from an "Intel(R) Core(TM)2 Quad CPU Q9400 @ 2.66GHz" PC the time between loading INITRD and starting boot sequence messages lasts nearly 30 minutes!(i didn't actually measure it but it take a long time in the same order). after starting boot sequence which is showed on monitor everything looks normal. e.g copy of files would be done by speeds between 2MB/s to 30 MB/s depending on the targets.I used to use the external hard derive to boot from different laptops and PC's from start but I didn't have such a problem anytime.
View 1 Replies View RelatedRecently I installed openSUSE 11.2 (GNOME) on my HP DC7100 machine. I was very excited about it until shortly, when I started discovering the problems.
One of the more severe problems is that I can't shut down the system:
Pressing the "Shut Down" button brings me back to the login screen. From there I still can't shut down, but I also can't log-in any more. The only option left is the hard shut down.
"Restart" sometimes works, but often ends up in the login screen too.
As far as the "Suspend" and "Hibernate" is concerned, I did not experience any problems there.
By the way, after the installation, I consumed all available updates (including the kernel upgrade). I'm not aware it the problem existed before the updates.

View 9 Replies View RelatedA few days ago I installed Nvdia fx 5200 drivers and after that I had on my grub menu Opensuse 2.6.31.8-0.1 Desktop along with Default. Since Desktop worked alright and Default would work only in terminal, I erased Default from Grub menu. Yesterday Update Applet warned about some updates, I installed them and had on Grub menu 2.6.31.12 Desktop with 2.6.31.12 Default. When I wanted to shut down computer, the screen froze. It works when I reboot but if I want to shut down, it doesn't do this, I have to make a forced shut down. How can I solve this problem?

View 4 Replies View RelatedI powered up and saw to my consternation that several Firefox Tabs did not load (server unavailable). I gave it several tries, but it did not work. Hiding Firefox, I saw that KWallet was waiting for a password. After that, I entered the password for SU, and Firefox worked. Then it struck me:
I did not login - repeat: I DID NOT LOGIN - , no username, no password. And the password for KWallet is not the same as my user PW.
If I am correct, openSuSE 11.4 (64 bits) may have security problem. Do: Start Firefox 4.0 Beta 12 Start some application that needs a password stored in KWallet, do not enter the PW Place the Firefox window over the KWallet wind for the PW Do a shutdown via the Icon Wait 30 seconds after power down Turn the power on
If you now enter the session without specifying any user name or PW, then this message has some merit; if not, I will try to duplicate the issue tomorrow.
Just installed Gnome 3.0 on Open Suse 11.4, now can not find "shutdown or restart" tag, having to shutdown computer by using terminal
