This issue was prompted by Groupwise MTA not communicating with a Post Office that I had migrated to our first Linux box. I found out why, because I cannot communicate with it at all, other than through ethernet. I'm not sure what the problem is. View 2 RepliesTried turning firewall off, i tried port forwarding tcp port 22, but it still doesn't work. Also am unable to ping modem over WAN, i can ping the modem locally though. Tech support claims pinging and ssh is not part of the internet so they wont support it in any way.
View 6 Replies View RelatedI am having trouble connecting to my Garmin GPS unit, an eTrex Venture HC. I gather from all the resources I've checked that it my system is finding the GPS just fine, but I am unable to communicate with the device. Using gpsbabel, I get the following error:
I noticed that the gpsd service was disabled, so I enabled it, but that didn't seem to change anything.

I have two computers...Ubuntu server and Windows XP client. Both are connected to the internet using Ethernet. I have them connected directly using 1394 to increase speed of large transfers. The internet network and 1394 have different IP address scemes. Internet 192.168... 1394 10.0.0...
I am having problems getting the two computers to communicate with each other. I can ping the server's ip address and and it loops back. Same with the XP's IP address. I can't ping each other.
ifconfig shows my eth0 and eth1 connections are up. The eth1 Link Encap says UNSPEC.(Don't know if that means anything.)
Small home network consisting of a media server(headless, no monitor/keyboard/mouse)running OpenSuse 11.0, and 3 Windows clients running Vista. I don't need the server running 24/7 so I have it set to Suspend to Ram after 60 minutes, which works great. I have a WOL program on each client which works perfectly to wake up the server.
However, there are times when the server "sleeps" while I'm still using it. I can be downloading to the server, playing music, or whatever-doesn't really matter-and when the 60 minutes is up, it sleeps. What I need is some solution that will keep the server awake if I'm actually using it but let it sleep after the specified period of inactivity. My first thought was using Ethtool to wake it network activity directed at the server, but I've tried all the ethtool options and can't make it work right. Either it wakes on any network activity whatsoever, (which means it never sleeps) or doesn't wake at all.
I have a problem with my WiFi HP LaserJet P1102w printer. I can add the printer, but whenever I try to print anything, say, HP testpage, I get the following errors:

I'm using current testing repos and the system is updated.
The printer is detected and installed via hp-setup, it just doesn't print.
This setup used to work, but I haven't printed anything in a while so can't be sure what caused it to stop working: updates, recent power outage or something else.
Printer is using a static IP address.
What works:
Printing over USB works.
Printing over WiFi from a different, Windows, PC works.
Pinging the printer (connected over a WiFi router) works. Also, opening the printer admin page works.
What I've tried:
Restarting everything.
Purging all hplip packages and reinstalling.
Installation log: [URL] ....
hp-check: [URL] .....

One problem has led to another.. I had notebook version 9.10 and it worked OK. I Downloaded 10.04 onto USB and all seemed fine. After upgrade - disaster. I have as Asus Eee PC901.
1. I am in Italy and bought a TIM USB mobile broadband modem - Ubuntu can see the device but nothing happens except a bizzare message with no information at all 'Unable to Open Archive'. I have no idea what that meant nor what I should do to resolve whatever it is, so I went back to my older USB modem which worked under 9.10 - Now even that device does nothing.
2. as a result, Ubuntu software centre does not work, Synaptic Package manager is the same; also update manager.
3. Limited communications are available via the university wireless network. That network requires me to work through their own proxy;port address (with username and password) which I have set up using proxy manager including the username and password. This allows me to carry out web surfing and point to point downloads.
4. Firefox works fine, and it obeys the requirements for registering with the proxy. Thunderbird, evolution, Synaptic, Update manager, Software centre etc all fail because they failed to authenticate with the proxy. They all have been set up to use system proxy. (Also tried direct proxy address;port in each package but no go)
5. The ultimate frustration has come from the direct download of Skype (.deb). Double click and it starts to install then crashes because of numerous dependencies (things like libqtgui4).
I am trying to set up a website from my ubuntu machine through IIS of windows server 2003. I am sharing the folder I want to store the files in across the network and all the computers are seeing it find.
The question is, how do I do this so it does not require a password to connect to it or give windows the permission without having to put them in every time.
I can get to my website, but it is asking for username and pass... I need that gone.

Running 11.3 on an Acer aspire 2920 laptop. OS is up and running as are other applications. I have been trying to install a .wmv player (for CBT), (kaffeine, MPlayer, VLC) and also crossover for linux. In all cases I get "Installation of package xxxxx rpm failed".
The system downloads without problem but the issue appears to be on the actual installation side.
I've had this issue since OpenSUSE 10.5 and Firefox 2.x. Now I'm on OpenSUSE 11.2 and Firefox 3.5.6. Here's the issue: I log into various sites to get my bank statements, utility bills, etc. They are all in PDF, and they open up acrobat reader and from there I save the bill as a permanent record. The first one I open opens fine. Subsequent sessions with subsequent providers (banks, whatever) opens up a new window as if to show me the PDF, but no PDF is there. Status on the window shows "done." No error messages. I have to shut firefox down, restart, log in again, and then it downloads fine. It's getting annoying.

I am succesfully able to do that.I used: mount -t cifs -o user..... command to mount it at /mnt/win on my linux and succesfully able to work with it.
Now, I want a user in my Linux box (both Linux images)to be able to write to the shared folder in windows (actually both linux images will write to the shared folder but it is based on acquairing locks and releasing them to be able to use the shared folder on windows).
I tried etc fstab and lot other options but my efforts were in vain.Simply put - I need a user in my linux box (suse 11.2) to be able to write to a windows shared folder.

I guess the chainloader boots 1st ufs slice and ignores the other. I've installed GrUB in FreeBSD and when I try to boot with different menu 'configfile /boot/grub/menu.lst' it returns error 17. This is probably due to inability reading ufs.

I use NT Boot Loader for the multi-booting on the basis of chain-loading the boot sector of Linux partitions. (It is not destroyed by MS re-installations; and is actually very easy to use). I also have an older Grub shell boot floppy which can do likewise:- root (hd0,x)chainloader +1 boot FWIW I found the disc partition & boot loader parts of the installation a nightmare. Difficult to know what it is going to do; and I am sure it *did* fiddle with parts I asked it to avoid. Horribly, it did *not* make me a dedicated Suse boot floppy like I checked. (This is always the safest boot option for a new install: it leaves the present boot system intact, and provides an independant way of loading your latest. You can refine things later). I had also checked to have the boot sector on the *root partition*.
I have never been able to get into the Suse. NT Loader does not like the partition boot sector. Nor does (an older) Grub from its boot floppy. I have tried the DVD in 'system repair' mode, when it finds things wrong and corrects them, same next time... It offers a way of directly booting a selected system; that did not work.
Any suggestions? I can provide more precise error msgs, but it is tedious; and system repair from DVD dicey. I feel that *the partition boot sector is not being properly set up*.And I want to be able to make a dedicated boot floppy; how? I have an identical problem with Ubuntu, which makes me think it is related to the 'new' Grub.
I've setup a dualboot-system. SUSE 11.2 starts automatically and works well all the time.
But when I want to use XP (yeah, sometimes I do that...), in about 40% of all cases it won't be loaded when chosen in GRUB. Just a black screen without anything else.Then I need to restart and in the 2nd trial it works!
When i am adding a user using "useradd -d /home/test test" or "useradd test", it is now creating the home directory, whereas when i am using the graphical mode and going through several menu options, i am getting the home directory.

Does anyone know of a Linux equivalent of MSN which allows video and audio communication. I have tried Kopete, although the call feature button is inactive, despite having setup my webcam in this program.
I have also tried installing a program called qnext, though webcam and audio support between alternate different Instant Messengers (IM's) are not supported.
I've got a Logitech QuickCam Communicate STX webcam. According to this website, this webcam works under Linux; however, when I open Cheese, I get only a screen full of colored bars (like what you see on a television channel that's off-air), and in Skype I get green snow.

Using Putty on the XP box to connect to Xvnc through a ssh tunnel works just fine. However, when I fire up TightVNC viewer and try to connect to 127.0.0.1 as I'm used to, TightVNC viewer is unable to establish a connection to X. I'm puzzled.
This has worked when I used another XP box as local computer. I'm running all within my LAN. Can this be a firewall/iptables issue? I've obviously posted this in wrong forum category. Sorry about that. Starts this thread in server category too.

I've been using transdroid on my nexus one to access transmission successfuly for some time now. But transmission is just too limited for what I really want. I really like either deluge or ktorrent and want to use them but this far I haven't been able to access either one remotely via transdroid. I'd greatly appreciate and advice anyone can offer.
I'm at work right now but can go into further details once I get home if need be. I've set up the webui plugin via the preferences menu in ktorrents settings and just can't get transdroid to connect.
I have Debian installed in embedded PC which is in a vehicle . This PC collects information related to engine .This pc is connected to internet using Verizon USB 175 modem.i connect to internet uing Wvdial. On connection it gets dynamic IP and uing this Ip i planned to login through Putty.This whole system Is in US , when i was in US i had laptop which is connected to internet using verizonPCMCI modem. from that laptop i used putty and entered dynamic ip in Putty and i could successfuly login to the system in vehicle.But when i came back to India i tried to login to the system , here i have different ISP not verizon , i tried to ping that IP ( technician called from US and informed the new IP ) in the Vehicle and i was successful in doing that , i got echo to my ping. Now using that Ip in putty to login but i could not login ,it gives time out

What about features though? What does openSUSE/Linux have instead of AD for file/folder sharing across the network? Are there roaming profiles? If so, how do I use that?I love openSUSE because of yast (and a few other things). And It's my main LinuxOS on my tower. I am still in college getting my certs and a degree (in networking). I really want to understand why Linux (openSUSE/ SUSE enterprise) is a better networking solution as opposed to Windows Sever 2003/2008.Also, why SUSE over RHEL/CentOS? Yast is awesome, but are there other reasons?

I have been using TightVNC (on XP) to remotely connect to my Ubuntu machine at home while in the office. This just worked. After upgrading to 10.10, I no longer can connect. Errormessage: Failed to connect to server (my ip) Looked at remote desktop settings, but these are not changed. Port forwarding is working and I use an internal fixed ip, so I can't imagine this being a problem (I doublechecked it anyway!). Anyone seen similar behavior> And, more interestingly, anyone know of a way to fix this?
