Apr 12, 2010I have a a few questions about Testing's update manager. When I go to the update manager I get a message saying "Do you want to perform a safe-upgrade, which does not remove packages or install new ones"? Will my entire system ever eventually get upgraded if I only ever do safe-upgrades? Or is there a time and a place to do non-safe upgrades? I did a non-safe upgrade a few days ago and all it did was mess with a bunch of OpenOffice packages.
Why are only certain packages selected by default when doing a non safe upgrade? Why is it that whenever I do a non-safe upgrade when it's done applying the updates the same packages I just installed are listed as available updates? Also, I used this website to build my sources.list and there apparently is some sort of "fatal error" with one of the repositories I selected. Is there a text file somewhere I can go to see a readout of apt-get bug reports?

Aug 6, 2010Im having an issue with sudo aptitude install. If i attempt to install anything, it says it will remove all of the packages below. On the other hand,if i use the Synaptic Package Manager, it doesn't remove any packages what is going on here? Any ideas? I have added some karmic repositories, but i dont think that should do anything?

1. why is it that when i add a ppa to the repository and then i type sudo apt-get update,it has an error for that ppa but i can still install it? deluge is the main one that does that.
2. when i install apps, it tells me to use apt-get autoremove to remove unused packages but i need some of them like java etc. how do i take some apps off of the autoremove list?

Sep 9, 2010I use the show-leaves yum plugin, and sometimes I use that info to remove some unnecessary packages. But that list can be long, so I write them on a text file.
1) Instead of removing packages one by one is there a way to remove all packages written in that text file?
2) Why isn't the output of the show-leaves plugin compatible with the output of "package-cleanup --leaves"?

After installing the Ubuntu i opened update manager and started the updates and after half hour, some of the updates were done but the sound and multimedia package was not installed. Then i played a song and ubuntu asked me to install 2 packages for that and after i made a confirmation to that, it shows that it is unable to install the package.

May 6, 2011I installed Fedora fc14.i686 in a VMware player. I have been able to install many packages off the web.
First of all, I'm having this issue: I am having trouble with GIT, it keeps timing out on me. github.com[0: 207.97.227.239]: errno=Connection timed out fatal: unable to connect a socket (Connection timed out). This is happening over a 24hr period so I think its something on my end.
Also, my apache directory is not visible on my local LAN to other machines. I can browse in Fedora, however. Even the machine hosting the VM can't see my var/www/http directory. I set permissions but I have a feeling its a network issue somwhere. BTW, I can ping the Fedora VM (192.168.0.17) from other machines.

Aug 3, 2010Running 11.3 on an Acer aspire 2920 laptop. OS is up and running as are other applications. I have been trying to install a .wmv player (for CBT), (kaffeine, MPlayer, VLC) and also crossover for linux. In all cases I get "Installation of package xxxxx rpm failed".
The system downloads without problem but the issue appears to be on the actual installation side.

I have ubuntu 10.10 installed.This happened after i tried to install crossplatfromUI application for using Reliance Netconnect device. The device is working without this file. Ubuntu goes and tries to mess up with my boot configuration. wtf does installing a package have to do with messing up my lilo? Oct 8, 2015I have been using linux for about a year and have run into a new problem I am unable to solve. It started when I attempted to install some packages I needed to get VirtualBox to run VMs. I am on Jessie.
I am unable to install various packages, including gedit, aptitude etc. I do not think it is a problem with my sources.list as my laptop has the same sources.list and I am not encountering the same problems on it. Packages will not install any dependencies. -f install isn't doing anything for me.

May 24, 2011I am not able to install any package using software manager. I make sure that I remain online throughout the process. When I select any software package to install, a window appears that asks for the authentication code. After entering the code, no progress(in any form) takes place and the dialog box remains idle. The same thing happened when I tried to install cheese, netbeans, gcc, eclipse, build-essential, g++, codeblocks and many other such software packages. I would like to state that this problem is persisting from past two days. Earlier I was able to install software packages using software manager and I had already installed about 10 software packages before this problem actually came into notice.
