OpenSUSE :: Update Applet Shows Firefox 3.5.9 Security Update, But 3.6 Already Installed

Apr 14, 2010

How can I make the security applet stop showing an update for firefox 3.5.9? I have a more recent version installed from mozilla repo: firefox 3.6. The mozilla repo already has a higher priority (95 instead of 99), so I don't know what to do.

Fedora X86/64bit :: FC11 Upgrade Made Firefox Max Out Cpu?

Oct 29, 2009

I've just upgraded from FC10 to FC11 (x86_64). Before the upgrade Firefox worked fine (it used a fair amount of ram but I typically have loads of tabs open :P ) but since the upgrade running Firefox maxes out my cpu. The whole system runs unusably slow if I have Firefox running now. I switched from KDE to LXDE and just ran Firefox to see if I could free up enough memory to save some tabs as bookmarks and close them but it's impossible (and not a permanent solution anyway). Konqueror runs blisteringly fast but with a cpu monitor running I can see starting Firefox just maxes out the cpu and it stays there, it's not just a heavy load at startup.I have 3GB ram and it's a dual core Centrino 2GHz so it's not an old system running out of resources and FF ran perfectly well under FC10.

Fedora :: Software Update Made NVidia Crash

Nov 6, 2009

I've had a working desktop even running compiz just before I updated today. Anyway, after the reboot which was required after my update, I got a notification in the boot message which says:

Code:
Checking for module nvidia.ko: [FAILED]
nvidia.ko for kernel 2.6.30-9-96.fc11.x86_64 was not found. [WARNING]
The nvidia driver will not be enabled until one is found. [WARNING]

I continued logging in and got a white screen (most likely brought by compiz without the nvidia drivers). I hit terminal and disabled compiz then tried to see how nvidia is doing. Here's what I got from nvidia-xconfig:

Code:
Using X configuration file: "/etc/X11/xorg.conf".
Backed up file '/etc/X11/xorg.conf' as '/etc/X11/xorg.conf.backup'
New X configuration file written to '/etc/X11/xorg.conf'
and finally here's what /etc/X11/xorg.conf contains: .....

Fedora :: Prevent Yum Update From Undoing Changes Made To Files In /etc/init.d?

Dec 27, 2009

One of my machines is a desktop with a WIFI connection. This machine is not configured to use NetworkManager; instead, it still does things the old way via /etc/sysconfig config files.

Problem: this WIFI connection requires wpa_supplicant. By default, F11 brings up the network at priority 10 and wpa_supplicant at priority 23. So dhclient fails its initial attempt to obtain an IP for wlan0 (it will retry and succeed but by then it's too late). This causes other network-related startup tasks to fail. For example, ntpdate fails. This is problematic for systems with faulty CMOS clock batteries since ntpd will reject updates if the clock skew exceeds some threshhold (so ntpdate is usually used to preset the clock).

The workaround is easy enough: add "Required-Start: wpa_supplicant" dependency to the init stanza in /etc/init.d/network and let chkconfig figure out how to rearrange the priorities. This ensures that wlan0 is actually capable of sending a DHCP request when dhclient starts.

This works fine...until yum update decides to replace the scripts in /etc/init.d and, consequently, things go back to the old, broken startup priorities.

So my question: Can yum be told to not change files in /etc/init.d that have been modified by the administrator? Or to at least not overwrite the LSB-style init stanza in those files?

Alternatively, is there a better way to do this that's not vulnerable to updates? I tried playing with the modprobe.conf "install" option to pre-start wpa_supplicant before wlan0 comes up but that has so far been unsuccessful.

Ubuntu Networking :: Desperate Now - Samba Update Has Made NAS Unusable?

May 31, 2010

I have had a good look round the forums but cannot come up with anything quite like this and the problem prevents me from using my NAS box and stuff is starting to stack up on my main PC now...

I have a Dell desktop running Ubuntu 9.04, a Shuttle running Mythbuntu 9.10 and a Netgear ReadyNAS Duo, all of which worked fine until this problem started. I have done nothing to any config files nor have I modified any settings from the outset, as far as I can remember I have just used everything as it came. This problem probably started a month or so back when update manager suggested a Samba update on both PC's which I accepted. I don't fire up my NAS box more than once or twice a month to back all my photos, music, video etc. so it was a while before I did (following the update) I could see the NAS and the Shuttle from the Dell but couldn't browse them I just got the error message 'Unable to mount location. Failed to retrieve share list from server' which I gather is all too common. I have searched around a bit on these forums and have tried a few things in the command line to gather information and I found something that worried me rather a lot. From Dell:

Code:
geoff@geoff-dell:~$ findsmb
*=DMB
+=LMB
IP ADDR NETBIOS NAME WORKGROUP/OS/VERSION

[Code]...

I haven't done any updates on the NAS box firmware so it can't be that and now I don't even see the shares in filemanager. What on earth is going on??? I know there are many other threads similar to this but but I am hoping that the slight difference might make this more obvious to solve. I forgot to mention that now I don't even see the shares in filedmanager - another thing that happened all by itself!

Software :: Latest Ubuntu 9.10 Update Made Videos Choppy?

May 5, 2010

I have a ton of .avi files. Ever since my last ubuntu online update, they can't play at full screen even though they played fine last week. I tried reinstalling mplayer. No difference. Same problem with xine.

They freeze for about 1/2 second at at time and chop their way along. Not even viewable. But, they look fine in mini-mode.

I have 4 gb ddr3, a quad core, 2.83 gzh intel and an ati 4850 / 512 mb video card. CPU on gkrellm shows < 10%. I think I still have the proprietary ati drivers because I can still move my applications around the screen instantaneously. I have tried xv, gl and gl2 under mplayer -> prefs -> video. All are the same.

Everything works perfectly if I reboot to xp. Where does one begin to debug this?

OpenSUSE :: Firefox Spelling Does Not Update ?

Apr 28, 2010

Firefox checks spelling in text areas, which is good. However, the dictionary it uses is global and dictionary changes do not reflect across text areas. When your chosen spelling dictionary is Polish and you enter text in English into box#1 and then into box#2, and then you decide to review your spelling, you can change the active dictionary to English. However, this will affect the spelling of box#2 only, which is good because box#1 might actually be in Polish. So you go back to box#1 and change the dictionary to English? Nope; the dictionary is English already so choosing English has no effect and the words are still marked as incorrect!

What you need:

A frame with two text areas, e.g. Bugzilla.

Steps to reproduce:

1. Set the spelling dictionary to Polish.
2. Enter "damaged " into box#1.
3. Enter "damaged " into box#2.
4. While in box#2, choose the English spelling dictionary.
5. Return to box#1.
6. Append text "damaged " (once more).

Actual results:

2. box#1: damaged
3. box#2: damaged
4. box#2: damaged
6. box#1: damaged damaged

Expected result:
6. box#1: damaged damaged

New to Suse. Have been driving Zorin, where all updates can happen at once. Have been trying to update Firefox (3.5.10) to new ver and Yast doesn't seem to be aware of it. Do I need to compile? My Zorin package (Ubuntu variant) sees each Firefox and everything else update and installs or gives me option. What do I need to do in Suse to get up to ver 3.6.8, and why isn't Yast aware?

Some time ago I did an automatic update and after that firefox, thunderbird and yast2 don't start. It's not that there is an error message or sth. Their icons just start jumping and after a while it stops without anything opened. I tried even removing the zilla directories and so on but it doesn't help. Of course I tried to simply reboot the machine and strangely enough, still does not work. Opera works though and I am ok with that, however yast2 not opening is more annoying. I do all the stuff that I want from the console, but of course that's not the point

OpenSUSE :: ATI Fglrx Video Driver Install Made A Mess / How To Fix

Jun 13, 2010

OpenSuse 11.2
linux 2.6.31.12-0.2-desktop x86_64
ATI fglrx video driver v10.4
ATI radeon hd3200 video adapter

VirtualBox (any version) crashes at startup if the video acceleration options are enabled. This was not a problem before installing fglrx. The crash occurs when VirtualBox queries the video driver about OpenGL, I am guessing from the log file.

To (supposedly) have access to all of the features possible in the video adapter I installed the ATI fglrx video driver. I (apparently foolishly) chose the custom, installation-specific path rather than the more general default path.

After installing the driver I saw no observable improvement in performance or feature set. Worse, there are couple of new features that are decidedly undesirable, and cannot be disabled. At least one pre-loaded font simply disappeared.

So I reverted to the original (open source?) radeon driver ("sax2 -r -m 0=radeon" at runlevel 3). All seemed welluntil I ran VirtualBox.

One thing I have not tried is to run the fglrx default installation. I fear making things worse.

Can anyone suggest what might have happened with the fglrx installation, and how to fix it?

OpenSUSE Install :: Unaccessible And Not Used 1.2 Tb Ghost Ext4 Partition Made During Installation?

Sep 16, 2010

I am not sure this is the right forum, its more about partitions, but it is a bit like it. This is the problem; I have a problem concerning my partitions; I run Opensuse 11.3 KDE 4.4.4 (standard issue) 64 bit. When I installed suse I had only attached one harddisk. A 1.5 Tbhardisk. In that I had made a 50 Gb partition and installed Windows. I tried out linux mint, just for the fun, and thenI installed Opensuse, let it erase mint and gave it another 50 Gb In that it made home etc. The rest Suse also formatted in ext4. Somehow it didn't get a mount point.I then attached second and third harddrive, and gave them mount points Windows/E and F respectively. (They are formatted in ntfs-3g)Yesterday I decided to give it a mountpoint, and gave it /windows/DI changed my mind and changed it to /home2In both these places I could access it but only as read only. And most weird of all, it had a lot of files in them, very much looking like root.

My questions are; How can I access and use that partition? What might these files be? Can I delete them? How would I best mount them? This is a picture of yast expert partitionerImageBam - Fast, Free Image Hosting and Photo Sharing
