Applications :: Update From Firefox 3.0 To Firefox 3.5 Through Yum / Remove Previous Installation And Use Solely One Package?
Nov 16, 2009
Recently I have installed Fedora 10. It comes with firefox 3.xx by default. Now I was wondering if there is any way through which i can update it to 3.5 version though yum. I have tried yum update firefox but it did not work and returns following messages Loaded plugins: refresh-packagekit Setting up Update Process No Packages marked for Update I know that one way to update is download the latest Tar package and use it, but I want to totally remove my previous installation and use solely one package i.e. firefox 3.5.
Today, I try to update firefox by Package Updater but show error by bellow. "Missing Dependency: xulrunner >= 1.9.0.19-1 is needed by package firefox-3.0.19-1.el5.centos.x86_64 (CentOS5updates)"
Since m computer updated FF to 3.6.x FF runs really slowly if a page with java/js or flash opens. It gets so slow I can hardly use it at all. This is a known problem that many people are complaining about, as seen here:

I would like to depreciate back to 3.5.8 or 3.5.9 until this issue is resolved, as currently this is preventing me from working the internet on my websites, etc. How can I get a previous version of Firefox to install? Using Jaunty 9.04
Thought I'd be clever and upgrade Firefox to v. 3 using instructions at

Ended up with "Namoroka" which seems to be Firefox 3.6, and it's a prerelease version.
Flash works under my admin id but not under normal user id. Reinstalling Flash didn't help. Want to revert to Firefox 2 that came with Ubuntu 8.04 so Flash will work again.
Can't uninstall "Namoroka" - uninstalled Firefox-3 but it's still hanging in there!
After several site:centos.org searches on Google and not finding anything remotely related to this question, I ask, how do I update Firefox 3.0 to Firefox 3.5 without losing any of my settings, history, bookmarks ,etc.?
I did an update to Firefox 3.6.16 and now it crashes each time it loads the homepage. I don't want to use Firefox 4 yet because some of the addons are still incompatible. So, how do I get the previous version of Firefox 3.6.15 for Ubuntu 10.10?
How can I remove Namoroka (3.6.12pre) and reinstall firefox? I already tried the sudo apt-get purge firefox-3.6 but to no avail. Can anybody tell me what the ppa packages just are? Is it correct that they are Ubuntu specific packages for optimizing applications for Ubuntu?
Ubuntu 10.04, update manager: the package "libmyth-perl" shows up, but is greyed. I have purged all myth-tv (assuming this package belongs there) from my system, but I am unable to remove this package from the update manager.
I tried to install ffmpeg for Firefox videodownloader addon but did some nasty damage. First of all, I followed this guide: [URL] I'm using Ubuntu 10.10 Maverick 32-bit version The installation froze after this: Quote: Unpacking replacement x11proto-core-dev ... Couldn't find anyone having the same issue on the net, so I just exited the terminal and then I couldn't do anything anymore. When I tried to install again (or remove) that thingy, i got this in console:
just tried to install today's Firefox 4 update but fails, either using Fedora's default installer or Yumex. The download and installation seem to take place successfully but it don't,with the update remaining "available" in the update tools. I just ran a manual installation and this is what I got:
I never use firefox because I use opera however I am really bored and I want to play around with my firefox however I have already ran into a problem, my problem is that firefox does not let me update to 3.6. I am currently using 3.0. How can I update my firefox? I use ubuntu 9.04.
I've been having problems with the Update Manager ever since it tried to install an update for firefox a few days ago. I'm on Hardy, and I tried to completely remove the firefox package using Synaptic, and re-installing it, and I always get the same error. Maybe it might have something to do with ubuntuzilla? I know I used that a while back to install Firefox 3.5/3.6, since the only one I was getting from the package manager was 3.0. Anyway, here is the error:
E: /var/cache/apt/archives/firefox_3.6.3+nobinonly-0ubuntu1~mfs~hardy2_i386.deb: trying to overwrite `/usr/bin/firefox', which is also in package firefox-mozilla-build
This morning my Ubuntu 8.04 Hardy box was all Hardy. The Update Manager told me to install some updates, which included a Firefox 3.6.6 update. That update failed to install, and now I everytime I click on the panel launcher or go to "Applications," then "Internet" and then "Firefox" I get the following error: Could not launch menu item Failed to execute child process "firefox" (No such file or directory)
Note: When running Firefox from Terminal:
Code: jonathan@ubuntu-desktop:~$ firefox The program 'firefox' is currently not installed. You can install it by typing: sudo apt-get install firefox-3.0 bash: firefox: command not found
I've had this happen three times and only since a firefox update yesterday. When I try to shutdown using the shutdown icon on my desktop, it goes to the splash screen and there it sits.
When I shutdown via terminal, it closes down just fine.
Has anyone else experienced this or have any other suggestions? I will undo that update tomorrow being that i need a break from the computer screen.
I ran the update manager a few weeks ago and for whatever reason, it downgraded me from Firefox 3.6 to Namoroka (Firefox 3.6 beta release from what I understand). Having had Namoroka before, and knowing how unstable it was, I immediately removed it and reinstalled Firefox 3.5 from Linuxappfinder.com. Upon this last update, Ubuntu again downgraded me from Firefox 3.5 to Namoroka. I am worried about updating my other computer because of this problem.
Firefox refuses to recognize the upgrade--in existing user accounts only! I created a new account & Firefox picked the upgrade right up. I'm ready to reinstall Firefox or start with all new user accounts--but either option seems to be extreme overkill.
Ubuntu 10.04 LTS Firefox 3.6.8 Adobe Flash Player 10.1 r82 (old accounts are stuck at 9.x)
After an update firefox doesn't load anymore. Whenever I try to install anything apt-get fails and warns me about broken firefox packages. It is mentioning firefox branding and chrome something (the latter seems to have gone away after I removed firefox via synaptic) apt-get install -f fails also.
RE: Ubuntu Desktop 10.10 64bit Updates from 2-3 days ago.
Since then, Firefox starts and runs fine the first time. Close it down and later try to restart, error says that Firefox is already using that profile and will need to quit it before proceeding.
System Monitor then shows that firefox and firefox-bin are still loaded (although nothing in the gnome app tray at bottom of screen). Jill those 2 processes and Firefox loads normally.
Should I wait this out and see if later updates cure this? Reinstall Firefox? Submit a report to launchpad?
Firefox 3.6 "Namoroka" stopped working after a recent update. Clicking on my panel launcher or the launcher in the applications menu does nothing. I even tried starting Firefox from the terminal and got an error message: "(firefox-bin:3592): GLib-WARNING **: g_set_prgname() called multiple times", whatever that means.I would be willing to rip out Firefox and start all over again but I don't know how to remove the 3.6 version. I couldn't find a method in the Software Center for doing that graphically.
I updated from karmic to lucid server edition and now firefox wants to download some php files. index.php which is in the same directory is apparently correctly parsed.
Google chrome tells me that the site may be temporarily down and Opera informs me that the connection has been closed by the remote server.
Under karmic I had a standard lamp server installed and everything worked fine.
This is the first time I post in a forum and I hope this is fine here.
I just moved the scripts from the server to a local machine which I updated a couple of weeks ago to lucid.
Firefox auto update keeps failing so...I need help locating the original installation location.
I tried downloading the update and using archive manager to open rather than save, but still it wanted to save. Now I can't find the location it selected.
I want to locate the downloaded saved and delete the new files, to conserve space.
And I need to learn how to force an Automatic update.
I found a folder named firefox and another firefox 3.0 System will not let me delete / move to trash.
I want to update to latest version. Don't want to remove the original and lose all my bookmarks
I can not run GWT applications in Firefox; it say me that GWT plugin is needed; I download and install the plugin through Firefox plugin manager, but when it restart, ask me for pluging, again. What i can do?
Is anyone else having problems with Firefox Ver 3.6.8? Lately for no particular reason it just stops, goes all gray and when I look at the process Firefox-bin is running at 100% or more. Occasionally it only lasts a few seconds but often and can even bring the whole machine down requiring a reset to recover. Sometimes it opens, starts loading Gmail and locks up so it's not a particular site causing the problem. I tried the "report a problem" but it was so frustratingly slow that I gave up. I'm running Ubuntu 10.04 kernel 2.6.32-24 GNOME 2.30.2 on a Core2 with 2G RAM.This is only a recent occurrence but it has forced me to use Chrome till I can fix it.
