I'd like to be able to grab the actual bytes of sound that's being played/executed on my computer (whether from microphone, mp3 or flash) and be able to use the stream in realtime in a program (either c, c++ or java). Anyone know how to do this?

I accidentally muted my sound and shut down with it muted. Upon restart, no sound is present through headphones, speakers, anything. The sound card still shows up in the options. Sound also has been disabled on my LIVE DISC OF 11.04These sound problems are the absolute worst part of Ubuntu. I'm almost ready to jump ship back to...vista *shudder*

Every time I hibernate the PC, when i comes back up I have to go into the mixer app to unmute the thing.. I this some sort of "feature"? I hope not.. running xubuntu 11.04..
Everytime I boot Ubuntu 9.10 system there is no start-up sound. A check of the sound settings under the system/preferences showes the sound muted checkbox is checked. I can uncheck it and listen music, etc. normally the rest of the session but on a reboot it is muted again.

I am been using Fedora 14 on my HP mini for a few weeks now. Everything was working fine. However, since I have updated my system a few time using yum upgrade. I can no longer get the sound working.
If I go to Menu | multimedia | pulseaudio sound control
All the volumes levels are at 100%. However, the mute button is muted and everything I press it, it remains muted.
I've been having some issues with my sound for a few weeks. Every time I reboot, my sound is muted. I have to open up alsamixer every time and unmute it manually. It is not the "master volume" that is muted but instead the "speaker" volume is the one that is muted. This started when i started up my computer and the ubuntu log-in sound started playing extremely loud. I quickly tried to turn down the volume while it was still booting and ever since then, i have been having this issue. Also, the volume control on my laptop no longer works, even after i adjust the volume with alsamixer. It still shows on the screen that the volume is being adjusted, but it does nothing. I hoped i explained this well enough for someone to be able to help me with this issue. Also, sorry if this issue has been posted before.

I've got an asus a8js laptop and since installing karmic, the built in microphone is permanently on. Every once in a while I brush my finger of the mic unintentionally and it makes some mad feedback.
I've ruled out that this is caused by pulseaudio, the problem occurs when pulseaudio is off (pulseaudio --kill) and I've set .asoundrc to go straight through the hardware.
My first thought was to check alsamixer, but I muted (capture, mic, mic boost set to 0) it in there to no avail. Consequently, any time I move a slider (any one, PCM, mic, Front...) the microphone mutes for 3 to 15 seconds and then is suddenly live again.

My only glitch with Ubuntu, which runs flawlessly on this beast, otherwise.I have spent more than 50 hours on this problem. In my case, inserting headphone jack doesn't mute internal speakers. I recently bought a set of 2.1 speakers, all is fine. I like to listen to my DAB radio through them. When I boot up, (runlevel 3), sound is there via the mic/line-in jack, but as soon as KDE starts, the sound cuts. Maybe it's just an Amarok2 problem, but whenever another app (for example Konversation) plays a sound file, the audio instantly cuts out (in Amarok2) and will not come back unless I quit Amarok2 and restart it.
Amarok2 has only the options - "HDA ATI SB VT 1708S Analog" or "PulseAudio" (which is NOT installed).

I encountered this on a 10.3 system but there might be similar problem with the 11 series. Having gone through the business of obtaining config info on this card via pnpdump and subsequently using Yast to configure and install it, I encountered a situation whereby the card was fully functional as far as the "Test Sound" option of Yast was concerned. However, after a reboot, it was not loaded and no sound was possible. Debugging the "alsasound" script, I discovered that the directory /proc/asound was not in place at that time and, therefore, sound was not started.
The solution was to add the module name (snd_sbawe) to /etc/sysconfig/kernel to the parameter "MODULES_LOADED_ON_BOOT". Seems like Yast did not see a reason to do this itself.
I recently installed the x64 rpm of OSS on my Opensuse 11.2 installation (alsa does not have drivers for my lynx card). Sound works beautifully in KDE (login sounds, apps produce sound, etc), EXCEPT for firefox. I can get no sound at all from firefox. I am baffled at why only firefox does not play audio.

I burned the movie using K3b and it works awesome in both Ubuntu and on my DVD player with the television. BUT the thing will not play in XP! I understand this is because XP is the work of the devil, but that is not important. The disc shows 4Gb used (in XP) but only gives the title. I even made sure hidden files were visible, just in case somehow the movie was invisible. I have tried burning my DVD directly from the video_ts files in K3b, and first making an .iso file, then going over to XP to burn the DVD using Nero...annnnnd same thing. I can watch them on the TV and 'buntu but not XP.
What have I done wrong? Advice? Need more info? invariably someone wants to ask the irrelevant question "Why do you need to watch it in Windows?"

View 4 Replies View RelatedI would like to capture the sound of my peacocks. These birds "crow" (for lack of a better word) only a few times in a day.
Usually they do so at around the time it gets light, about 6:00-ish. They might call again once before I leave for work.
The problem is to capture a high quality audio clip of their sound I need to have the recording running when they call. Turning the recorded on an hour before they call may be an option, but the size of the data file produced is rather obnoxious.
So I need something like a kind of time-lapse function for sound. I'd like to set the recording to run and then have it fill a 10-minute circular buffer.
Then when the birds call, I can go and stop the recording and then I can extract the portions from the file that I like.
Now, finally, for the question: Is there a ready-made linux application I can use for this?
I don't do a lot of audio work, and don't expect to use the program more than a few times, so I am willing to build something from source too, so long as it is easy to clean up afterwards and as long as it compiles without too many issues.
I am running Ubuntu 10.10.
will firefox 3.6 be made available as an update? If not is there anything special I need to know before installing it myself i.e. will flash still work?
