The support unit here at uni doesn't support linux. Only Windows and Mac OS. And I can't quite figure how to get the printing to work. For windows I have to go to:

\print.plan.aau.dk I think its a samba print server. From here (on windows) I can choose which printer to use. There is an accounting system, so I need to log on with username and password. Is there a way to set this up easily in OpenSUSE 11.2 64bit KDE4?
I find that the new KDE4 notification icon is not very easy to see.The "progress" indication is a microscopic vertical progress bar, that I find very difficult to interpret.OK, it is a minor annoyance, but I do find that I regularly try to use the network on my laptop before the connection has been established.It is also a regression over the icons in 11.1 or before, which were very clear.If people agree with me on this point, I will post a bug, with the aim of getting a clearer icon.

To mount an NFS share in the past, I had some Device-Link icons on my KDE3 desktop. That worked fine. Now, SUSE 11.2 comes with KDE4. The NFS shares are properly configured in /etc/fstab as usual (including 'users' option). And now the big question: What is the official way to mount my NFS share on demand as an ordinary
user?
Desktop icons are not KDE4ish. And the Device-Link method doesn't work either, because it apparently doesn't take care of /etc/fstab (i.e. the users option) and insists on root privileges. Also Dolphin is not able to mount NFS shares when I need it because it
simply does not show them. The only way to mount my shares is to perform the mount command in a
terminal session. But this couldn't be the truth with KDE4, isn't it?
I've just installed 11.2 KDE 64bit and I'm having trouble getting CUPS setup. I have a hp5440 deskjet that is not listed but I have used another model in the past with another distro. But when I put in my username and password it doesn't take it. there is no other password. How do I set up CUPS? Can I used hplip instead?
View 3 Replies View Relatedasus K60IJ intel 4400 dual-core 4gb ram trying to setup suse 11.2 64bit as dual boot. works fine with win7 in dual boot and system boots great. been following forums to setup wireless. after doing all term commands, it see's both built in wireless (atheros ar9285) on the pci-e and the usb verizon broadband modem as (curitel brand modem). after checking kernal dmesg, it see's devices but looking at usr/sbin/iwconfig, it see's no eth0. checked at the asus website and see nothing on getting any kind of ethernet drivers.
View 7 Replies View RelatedIm trying to setup multiple domU through the default bridge setup. I am able to access only one of them through the network at a time. If you ping one of the domU it works perfectly but you cannot ping any of the others until you stop pinging the one and even then it takes a bit before you can. Ive looked around for a while and seen similar problems but nothing ever seems quite the same. Im probably missing something really stupid. Or is this the way the bridge is supposed to behave? Do i need to use a routed virtual network?

I am trying for the last many days to setup my opensuse 10.3 as Samba PDC Server according to the URL mentioned below, but in vain:How to setup SUSE 10.3 as Samba PDC - openSUSE When ever I try to join a Windows XP machine to the domain setup on Opensuse, I get the error:'The following error occured while attempting to join the domain. The network path was not found'. What could be the reason for this error despite of the fact the I am able to ping the FQDN of the PDC from the XP machine, but the XP machine simply denies to join the domain because of the above mentioned error.

According to what I've read, this requires rarpd and tftpd which I've set up on opensuse, but also bootparamd which I can't find for 11.3. It seems it was last included with opensuse 9.2. Does anyone know if it's available, if I could use the suse 9.2 version, or any alternative?

Now the Xen network script a) does not take this bonding b) destroyes even this bonding From a number of posts I assume I have to configure this by hand, correct? Is there an instruction how to do this? Simply create a bridge on top of bond0??
View 1 Replies View RelatedI'd like to have a set up where my Ethernet card has a static IP set up but my WiFi card doesn't.Currently I have a profile for this set up in Network Manager, however on boot up and every time I replug the cable Network Manager chooses the default "auto eth1" profile. I manually have tochoose my own profile for the Ethernet card every time. How can I make it default??I know the workaround would be to use ifup but then I lose the ability to quickly change access points for my WiFi card so that's not a solution for me

I am unable to do my network setup. I have a lan connection. I used to easily setup it in windows xp in network connections > internet protocol > properties. But I do not understand anything in linux. I have installed latest version of open suse 11.1 and KDE environment. Secondly I am unable to play mp3 files on it and I do not hear any sound at startup too. I *945* motherboard with a inbuilt realtek lancard and it is working fine on windows.

Since the printer has ethernet connectivity, I have managed to setup the printer with the 32bit openSuSE 11.2, 11.3 machines I have in my network. However, the 64bit 11.1 is another beast. I cannot make the printer work. The default and updated from officials repos hplip does not contain the PPD file for the printer/scanner/fax.I added the "Printing" repository (Index of /repositories/Printing/openSUSE_11.1) and downloaded the 64bit versions of hplip, hplip-hpijs packages. Now, the issues:hp-setup does not run with "Segmentation fault" error! Although I can see the printer, setup and modify it's configuration, cups cannot print, not even a test page.The errors I have are:

Regarding the 1st error, I "solved" it by using the hplip-qt3 package from KDE_3 repository. And when I used that version of hplip, (3.10.9-4.2, instead of the 3.10.9-31.1 of the Printing repository), I had no more filter related problems (foomatic etc).For the second one, it is obvious that the problem is related to the location of the 64bit filters.The /var/log/cups/error.log has the following lines:

I reinstall OpenSUSE (For whatever reasons) where I prefer having VLC as my default video player, for every media type (.wmv, .mkv, .avi, .mpg).
I realize that I can go into Configure Desktop > Advanced > File Associations, but then I have to individually select each (quite cryptic) media type, and manually change my preference.
This should be way easier than it is (I'm computer literate, but can you imagine a new user trying to change these settings?)
i've just setup a vps server with 11.4 everything is almost look fine now, but i couldn't setup a nameserver, i've searched on the internet about that but directories is different in suse. anyway i registered a domain on onlinenic yesterday and i want to use this domain as a nameserver and my hostname. how can i do that ? and do i need to have at least 2 ip for that ?

I originally installed it with the GNOME desktop, and when I opened firefox i could only connect to [URL]... and [URL], other websites timed out, even if i got to them via search results or URL.
Now, I reinstalled using the KDE desktop because after a little thought I preferred it, but now I can't even connect to these search engines at all. I don't know how to configure the network! It's through the onboard ethernet port, ethernet cable direct to modem.
I have tried all kinds of DNS services. I have a printer/scanner/fax that's on the network. i have the printer part set up through cups but how do I set up the scanner? What programs can I use on opensuse to see the scanner?
View 9 Replies View RelatedI have several Windoz machines in a peer-to-peer network and now two SUSE machines, one 11.1 and another 11.2.I have a network printer accessible now to all the machines.My next step is to be able to share files between all the machines and several network drives. I know how to set this up between the Windoz machines, but the only way I can get the SUSE machines to see the network (and be seen) is to shut down their firewalls, and I don't think that's how you are supposed to do it?Can someone point me to what it is that I need to read, or is there a FAQ somewhere to help get me started?
I think that this has something to do with Samba and I installed Samba (client or server? I forget) on the 11.1 and 11.2 seems to have it already built-in, but I don't know how to set it up with the firewalls on the two Linux machines so that it is all seamless (as if anything can be seamless).
My Samba setup works just fine however whenever I do stop/start/restart. I get these errors in the logs:

Just loaded Open SUSE EDU L I F E 11.2.2 on a Server and like what I see. The install went well and everything came up fine. I like the look and feel of this distro. The GUI features are impressive. Internet connects via eth1 . Sound, CD/DVD works and plays ok/ , grapics all working. I have two NIC cards installed.I am preparing (learning , testing, exploring) with a number of Servers that I want to take to schools in Africa.One of the key components that I need to get up and working is the LTSP. I was delighted to see that this version includes EASY-LTSP with a KIWI component. [SUSE KIWI-LTSP] So I printed out the LTSP/Quick start/Easy-LTSP (Guide) and tried to set up LTSP on my server.I went to KIWI/Prebuild in the Easy-LTSP presentation page.A box popped up with this info:

I am experimenting with Xen with the standard kernel (kernel-xen package) and utilities. I already got bridged setup to work with a single domU, but found out that because of my wireless card I cannot expect bridging to work when connected wirelessly. Now I am trying a NAT setup but I cannot seem to get any network connection from the domU to the dom0 and viceversa. Comparing the network devices and routing tables of others, I cannot see any problem.
The domU runs with IP 10.0.0.1 and the dom0 has a vif with IP 10.0.0.128 with a default gateway of 10.0.0.254. Pinging from the domU to the dom0 and viceversa does not show any traffic at all when I use tcpdump to monitor eth0 in the domU or the vif interface in dom0. It seems that basic connectivity of the vif interface and eth0 in the domU does not work. Any tips on how to debug this problem?

View 2 Replies View RelatedI'm trying to get OpenMPI (a parallel programming library) working on my home system. I have just two machines on it now, t61 and quad, connected through a router. (Which is also connected to cable modem for internet.) I can ssh between the machnes, mount directories with NFS, etc. However, I just can't get the OpenMPI to run. The OpenMPI message board suggested that the most probable cause is that the firewall is blocking TCP. I don't know how to tell if that's the problem, and can't find any manual for the SuSE firewall, while the various Wikis &c that pop up in a search don't provide any information that addresses my problem.
