OpenSUSE Multimedia :: Easily Set VLC As Default For All Video Types?

Jul 25, 2010

I reinstall OpenSUSE (For whatever reasons) where I prefer having VLC as my default video player, for every media type (.wmv, .mkv, .avi, .mpg).

I realize that I can go into Configure Desktop > Advanced > File Associations, but then I have to individually select each (quite cryptic) media type, and manually change my preference.

This should be way easier than it is (I'm computer literate, but can you imagine a new user trying to change these settings?)

OpenSUSE Multimedia :: Set Vlc As The Default Video Player?

May 20, 2011

I just reinstalled my laptop with OpenSUSE 11.4, 64-bit and I'm using gnome 3.0, I can't figure out how to change the default video player to vlc though...I've tried going to 'Applications' --> 'System Tools' --> 'System Settings' --> 'System info'Here I can choose default programs, however vlc does not appear in the drop-down menu for videos. I do have vlc installed. I can choose to play videos with it when I right-click video files. But I'd like vlc to be the default so that I can just double click the video file and vlc plays it.It is a little bit confusing as totem is set as the default video player in the above-mentioned window, but when I double click a video file banshee starts

Software :: Wine Set It As Default Handler For Many Mime-types?

Dec 24, 2010

I don't have wine installed. But I use teamviewer [URL] to remote support my friends. Teamviewer provide an "linux version" using wine wrapper. Every time I run it, some mime types such as .jpg, .wmv, .txt, .ini, v.v... was set to be handle by a "A Wine application". So, nothing happen when I open those file, I have to reset their handler to proper linux application.

1. How can I completely remove those "A wine application" handler? Is there a tool, or a settings applet in gnome that allow me to do that. Currently, I have to find those files in nautilus, right click and change the open with settings, that's frustrated.

2. Can I lock mime type handling settings from being changed by some application? Or even lock it from any changed at all? I don't mind remove the write permission from some settings file, I won't likely to change my current mime type handling settings in near future.

Ubuntu Multimedia :: Reverting To Default Video Drivers

Jun 17, 2010

When Lucid Lynx came out I did a clean install on my laptop by burning an iso. Unfortunately, I got an annoying bug in which the image would always be wiggly (wavy) in the external monitor. In an attempt to fix the issue, I tried to installed Ati's restricted drivers. Unfortunately, my graphics card (Radeon x1200) isn't supported by them on Ubuntu 10.04, and trying to install it anyway only made things worse.

Right now, I just want it to be back to what it was when I first installed Lucid. Following the instructions on this page, I have already removed the fglrx drivers, and I think I installed the open-source driver. However, I can tell that things are not the way they were when I first installed. By going in "Main menu > System > Preferences > Monitors" I get the usual menu to configure the monitors, except I can't actually configure anything.

There's only one monitor (listed as Unknown), and the system doesn't let me change any of the settings (such as resolution or frequency). The external monitor is showing the same output as the laptop monitor, and doesn't get recognized by the system. I just want to use the exact graphics drivers that came installed in Ubuntu 10.04 Lucid Lynx. But I don't want to do a clean install.

OpenSUSE Multimedia :: Mkv In Smplayer Freezes Video While Scrolling - In Vlc No Video At All

Apr 1, 2011

OpenSUSE 11.1, 64 bit, 2 cores, intel graphics, 4 GB of RAM:_no_ problems

OpenSUSE 11.4, 64 bit, 4 cores, nvidia graphics, 16 GB of RAM:

Problem is very similar to: Problems playing mkv HD films in opensuse but not windows but with enough differences that I start a new thread:

* playback in VLC does not work -- there is only sound

* playback in SMplayer works, however -- when I scroll forward, the video freezes and sound continues, to unfreeze video I have scroll a tiny bit backward

I tried changing the video ouput driver (in SMplayer) from xv to xv/noveu-nvidia, it didn't help. Please note, that I use the same settings (initially) as before in OS11.1.

Ubuntu :: Video Card Swap - Screen Using A Default Video Driver

Jan 25, 2011

If I take out the existing video card and put in another one of a different type (but not a different brand), how does Ubuntu behave? I know what Windows typically does. Windows starts up the screen using a default video driver which is at least 1024 by 768 and then asks you what this new bit of hardware is and asks where the drivers are. I'm pretty sure Ubuntu has default drivers of its own, but I don't know what their resolution is.

Ubuntu :: Grsync - Filtering File Types / Getting Only Some File Types Getting Included And Not Others?

Sep 1, 2011

I'm using Grsync and I want to be able to plug in any drive into my laptop and run rsync on it to back up all the user documents on there to another external hdd and to exclude everything else. Working on the principle that user documents don't always appear where we'd expect I want rsync to look through the whole drive and filter what it backs up by file type. I am only having partial success, however.

I am using the 'filter' option in the 'additional options' box. I am using the command
Code:
filter='merge /home/tim/Desktop/filter'
and I am attaching the filter file I have written. (I have added the .txt extention to upload it).

I have tested this script on my home folder and here's what's going wrong. Rsync will copy the entire directory structure regardless of whether there are any files to be copied over in those directories. I am also getting only some file types getting included and not others. .odt and .ods files are copied, for instance, but not .doc or .rtf.

Debian Multimedia :: Freedekstop MIME Types Versus Update Alternatives

Aug 15, 2010

I would like to know if there exists an article explaining how update-alternatives integrates with Freedesktop.org MIME. How do these systems coexist? How do they cooperate? Lately KDE and GNOME apps seemed to agree on default applications more and more; it seems there still exists an ordering problem [URL] , section Default application ordering), but things are generally working.

However, now I notice that some applications (which I've known for a long time to not be very Linux desktop friendly, I'm looking at Mozilla first, but this time I can't blame them without reason) use some totally different system, Alternatives. The example that comes to mind now is Icedove. Is there going to be a consensus on the default system or we'le have different applications using different systems?

OpenSUSE :: Sound Works Only For Some Types Of Applications?

Mar 9, 2010

I have used it for some times but never went behind basic use to use Internet, save files, write documents with OpenOffice...

I just installed the 11.2 version in 64-bit. I previously used a 11.1 version, and on which sounds worked fine.

I do get the login and logout jingle, and CDs play fine as well.

My problem occurs when I try to watch a video on Internet, so with FlashPlayer, and also when using Skype: I get neither the notification sounds, and a test call tells me I have a problem with the audio device.

When I point my cursor on the "sound" icon on my control board, it tells me the sound is at 0% even though it works for the above-listed tasks.

Here is what my computer has (from "system configuration"), including the last two lines I get when I click the "advanced" option:

HDA VIA VT82xx (VT1708 Analog)
HDA VIA VT82xx (VT1708 Digital)
HDA ATI HDMI, ATI HDMI (HDMI audio output)
PulseAudio
HDA ATI HDMI, ATI HDMI
HDA VIA VT82xx, VT1708 Digital(IEC958(S/PDIF) Digital audio output)

Everything has this same preset configuration: notifications, video, etc.

OpenSUSE Multimedia :: Sound Volume Default To Zero On Each Restart?

On each restart, I get no sound. I have to go to YAST, Hardware, Sound, Other, Volume. The 'Other channels', Front slider is at 0%. If I slide it up to 100%, my headphones start working. At this point the Help text says to press 'Next' to save the settings, but there isn't a 'Next' button...just a Cancel and OK. OK keeps the new setting, but apparently doesn't save it permanently.

What can I do to avoid having to reset this slider every time ?

OpenSUSE Multimedia :: No Audio With Video?

Aug 5, 2010

after installing opensuse 11.3 i am finding that i cannot recieve any audio with video with any application.

i can hear certain types of audio, it seems any audio that is not attached to video. i can hear the welcome chime through my speakers after i log in to opensuse and i can also listen to .mp3 files played with amarok. i can watch videos with multiple players, videos videos etc., but there is no audio happening with the video.

i am thinking now this may actually be a hardware problem, since it seems to persist with different software, and only with audio attached to video. i'm thinking maybe there is a problem with my graphics card and its driver (or a lackthereof), although i'm unsure of why i can still watch video. i don't receive any error messages or anything, nor have i attempted to manually install any drivers for my existing hardware. i tried cranking every volume control i could find, including the system volume, but still no volume with video (its weird, its like i can hear it a tiny bit when i crank it, perhaps this is just the internal system beep speaker trying to fill in for the gfx card?).

the card i'm currently using is an nvidia card and although its not exactly old, i have read about some problems with nvidia being reluctant to produce drivers for linux in the past. after some brief googling of nvidia and linux, i was surprised to see that nvidia has an entire portion of their site devoted to unix/linux and open source drivers (perhaps they're doing better now).

is there any way that i can troubleshoot this problem, or do you think the solution is simply purchasing another graphics card from a vendor that has a good reputation for linux support?
