Ubuntu Networking :: Dual Boot Kubuntu / Win 7 (64bit) - Wireless Drivers?

Jan 3, 2011

I dual boot windows 7 and Kubuntu on my laptop, my wireless card works on windows 7 no problem, and luckily the company also has a linux version of the driver. My question is, how can I install packages on kubuntu without a wired internet connection, and what packages should I download to be able to install the driver on kubuntu without getting errors?

My wireless card is Realtek 8192CE.
Here is the download page for the driver, in case I missed something.
I am dual-booting Kubuntu/Windows 7 x64bit.

OpenSUSE Install :: Can't Boot Into SuSE (Dual Boot With Win7)?

May 26, 2011

I'm trying to dual-boot Windows 7 with openSuSE 11.4, i was told that i should install SuSE after windows 7 as it takes care of the boot-loader and automatically detects my windows installation and not vice-versa,
But that is not true in my case.

So i had 2 hard disks one had windows 7 installed and one was empty so i decided that i should get openSuSE 11.4 on the empty hard disk and dual-boot it with windows 7 (that i already had installed). Downloaded the DVD, put it on a USB and installed SuSE on the other hard disk normally, it detected my windows installation on my main hard disk but i didn't touch that, only formatted my other hard disk to ext4

After the installation it booted automatically into SuSE, but now every time on a fresh restart the system boots automatically into windows. Methods i have already tried to resolve this and it didn't work:

1. Booted from the DVD and selected an "Upgrade" not "New Installation" so i could boot again into my SuSE installation which did work, checked my "Boot Loader" options from YaST and checked the "Boot from MBR" option instead of the "Boot from root partition" option, That Did NOT work.

2. Used the same method to Boot into SuSE with the "Upgrade" Option opened up the terminal and tried to install grub manually again using this link

OpenSUSE Install :: Suse 11.2 Won't Boot From Dual Partiton With Ubuntu 9.04?

Jan 11, 2010

I've been running a Suse 11.2 and ubuntu 9.04 on an internal HDD in separate partitions for about 6 months on an Acer aspire with 756 meg ram. I installed Suse first then Ubuntu as I couldn't work out how to alter the partitions and keep Ubuntu when installing Suse first. Yesterday when I tried to boot Suse I got the message Error 15 no file found. I went into boot edit for and Suse this is what I found.

Root (HD0.0)
Kernel /boot/vmlinuz-2.6.31.5-0.1-default root=/dev/disk/by-id/ata-s
nitrd /boot/initro.2.6.31.5-0.1-default

Id like to be able to fix this so I don't lose either OS as I use them both for different things and until I learn all about Suse and can make a live cd of OS, I really love it but am not prepared to dump ubuntu. I've put a lot of time into both and don't want to start again. I've got a Suse studio account and really want to create my own dedicated Video/audio KDE Suse. I'm new to dealing with grub and the terminal other than cut and paste, so may be a bit dim until I can understand them.

OpenSUSE Install :: How To Setup Two Drive Dual Boot With XP

I've been wanting to start using Linux for years now and after doing some research on which distro to use, I've decided to give it a try with openSUSE and ordered a DVD copy from Novel last night. Needless to say, I'm a newbie to Linux. I'm building a new computer with two identical hard drives and I'd like to install openSUSE and XP on them and hence make a dual boot system. This is also going to be my first time setting up a dual boot. So, while I'm waiting for the openSUSE DVD to arrive, how to actually set it all up?

OpenSUSE Install :: Setup On Dual Boot With MS-Vista On A Dell Studio 1537 Laptop?

Dec 20, 2009

This is not strictly a Linux question, although I am interested in any Linux cautions as to what to avoid that could impact my Linux on the computer in question. I have Linux (openSUSE-11.1) setup on dual boot with MS-Vista on a Dell Studio 1537 laptop. My wife is "fed up" with Vista, and has asked that I replace Vista with WinXP on this Laptop. I would like to do this over the Christmas holiday break. The laptop's 1 year support warrantee has expired. can someone explain to me the function of the two Dell /dev/sda1 and /dev/sda2 partitions ?

This laptop was purchased with MS Vista installed, with 3 primary partitions (small /dev/sda1 (called "Dell Utility" ),10GB /dev/sda2 (unknown - appears to be some sort of Dell backup/recovery partition ? ), /dev/sda3 (MS Vista which had the remainder of the 250GB drive, although I have subsequently reduced this to 69GB ).

Again, I note /dev/sda3 is the 69GB MS Vista partition (I reduced it to 69GB when I installed Linux (openSUSE-11.1)). I also believe it may be in /dev/sda3 where I should plan on installing winXP. Currently I have openSUSE-11.1 Linux in /dev/sda4 (divided into extended partitions, with /dev/sda5 (swap), /dev/sda6 (root), and /dev/sda7 (/home) for Linux and it works well. I plan to keep openSUSE-11.1 Linux when Vista is replaced by WinXP Can I remove and merge /dev/sda1, /dev/sda2, and /dev/sda3 and replace them with one partition for WinXP ?

Or am I better OFF keeping /sdev/sda1 (Dell Utility) ? and am I better off to keep /dev/sda2 (some sort of Vista ?? recovery) ? and only put winXP on /dev/sda3 ? Aside from the MBR with Grub being destroyed (when I replace Vista with winXP) is there anything else I need to be careful of wrt keeping my openSUSE-11.1 Linux install on this laptop ?

I've also sent a slightly different version of this post as a question to the Dell Support mailing list. p.s. for information, here is some output from Linux commands showing the contents:

OpenSUSE Install :: Dual Boot Breaks Wireless?

Mar 16, 2011

I'm a regular OpenSuse user, but recently I had to download Windows7 on my computer for work. Everything was fine for a while, but now when I switch to windows, the wireless doesn't work sometimes (sometimes it works just fine). When this happens wireless is broken on the Linux side as well. The only way I know to fix it is to hard wire the laptop when booted into windows, and then everything is back to normal. It's really starting to tick me off and I have no idea what may be causing it. I didn't even know the two partitions can effect each other.

Ubuntu Installation :: Win 7/64 10.0.4/64bit Dual Boot Win-ok?

Aug 17, 2010

Dell Prec T5500 (Xeon E5504) with two 1T drives, 24G ram, NVidia Quadro NVS420 Windows 7 Pro 64 bit was installed first and works fine

SATA 0 is Win 7 Pro 64 bit , 1 NTFS partition
SATA 1 is partioned as follows
8G swap
200G EXT4 mounted as /
800G NTFS

I booted from Ubuntu cd, ran install chose manual partition scheme and set up SATA 1 as above. Grub2 boots into Windows 7 with no problems and I can see/use NTFS partition on SATA1 When I try to boot into default Ubuntu the screen goes black and then loses video signal and nothing happens, doesn't sound like the disk is doing anything. Grub for the linux boot is as follows

recordfail
insmode ext2
set root='(hd1,2)'
search --no-floppy --fs-UUID --set a05...yadayada....b7a
linux /boot/vmlinuz-2.6.32-21-generic root=UUID=a05....yadayada...b7a ro quiet splash
initrd /boot/initrd.img -2.6.32-21-generic

If I boot into Live CD I can mount EXT4 on SATA 1 partition and everything looks fine, e.g the files /boot/vmlinuz-2.6.32.21-generic and initrd.img-2.26.32-21-generic are both there and the UUID of that drive is the same as referenced in GRUB2.

SUSE :: Dual Boot 11.2 And XP?

Jan 6, 2010

I installed open SUSE to dual boot with XP and have an interesting problem. When my computer rebooted to complete the SUSE install, it would not work at all. I rebooted and the GRUB came up with operating system choices, but when I chose one, absolutely nothing would happen. I tried to reinstall SUSE and nothing happened. I rebooted with the XP cd and nothing happened. I then rebooted with a bood cd I have and it showed the hard drive but could not test it and said it was absent.

After freaking out, I shut the computer all the way off and started it up again. Now it works. It seems that I cannot reboot the system for it to work. I have to turn it all the way off before it will work at all.

Windows runs as well but was a bit shaky to start. I think it's ok now.

Anyone know why a reboot will not restart the system and I have to shut it all the way down? Soft boot, hard boot, doesn't make any difference.

OpenSUSE :: Migrate The Gnome Configuration From 32bit To 64bit SUSE?

Apr 27, 2011

My new HP625 Laptop came with SLED11 preconfigured - including such special keys as the wireless/bluetooth key etc under gnome. I need a 64bit OS and 8Gb for my applications and the HP site does not offer any explicit support for 64bit Linux. So I installed SLED64bit on separate system partition and can select now 32 or 64 bit from GRUB. There remains the problem of configuring gnome (or KDE) on the 64bit system to take advantage of the keyboard, sound, cam etc. I did find a 64bit wireless driver in the i586-Repo on the HP-site that requires the kernel from opensuse 11.3 and I got bluetooth working with gnome but just for the keyboard alone, I am stuck with finding a decent configuration under 64bit. Is it possible to migrate the system wide gnome configuration from the SLED32 bit installation (as configured by HP) to any SuSEx86_64 system?

Installation :: Dual Boot Windows 7 / Suse 11

Sep 5, 2010

I am trying to install Suse 11 on my new laptop. The laptop has 250GB capacity. As I only use Linux for some scientific programming, I only needed to allocate about 20GB to Linux.

SDA1 is NTFS PQ Service 13.1 GB
SDA2 is NTFS Sys Reserved 101.9 GB
SDA 3 was the mainWindows user partition.
I shrunk this partition to 195GB using GPARTED.

I then tried to add 3 new Linux partitions to the unallocated disc space for usr home and a swap partition. GPARTED informed me that I would need to produce an extended partition to do this.

SDA4 became an extended partition 24.42GB
SDA5 EXT2 10.74 GB
SDA6 SWAP 1.46GB
SDA7 EXT2 11.21GB

When I started the SUSE install, all of the partitions were recognised correctly, but on the Grub details screen (Grub was allocated by SUSE to SDA4) I was warned that as this was beyond 128GB, my computer might not boot correctly. Is this likely to be the case, or do I need to alter something to get SUSE to install. The last thing i want with a new computer is a system that won't boot at all.

Ubuntu Installation :: Studio 9.10 64bit To Dual Boot With Existing Windows XP OS?

I have been using ubuntu for a little while so i'm not a total newbie. But im not very confident with installing the latest verion of ubuntu studio. Previously i upgraded to ubuntu studio through the terminal window from Jaunty. This time i want to do a fresh install via a DVD. I tried earlier but the part im confused about is the partitioning and formatting process. I have 2 hardrives. One of my hard drives has my XP OS on it along with my entire life. So I cant afford to make a mistake. The other has an older 32bit version of ubuntu studio on it.

I have looked online but I havent found much help. What i was thinking of is just unplugging my windows drive, doing a fresh install on the other. But then i wouldnt know what to expect when i boot up and plug in the XP drive.

Ubuntu Installation :: Partitioned The Drive And Made A Dual Boot With The 64bit 10.04?

Sep 26, 2010

New gateway laptop with a 330M nvidia card and windows 7. I partitioned the drive and made a dual boot with the 64bit 10.04. Everything seemed to be running fine. I installed the recommended drivers for the nvidia card (and also ran an update). I rebooted. Now I get the same thing whether in recovery mode, normal boot or even to a liveCD, first ubuntu with the five dots (with an odd green halo around them) then a few screens flash by and then blackness.

None of the f keys do anything, nor does holding shift during the boot and ctrl+alt+anything does not have an affect except ctrl+alt+delete will shut down still. Once in my frustrated button bashing I did somehow get a stretched out window saying there seems to be some graphics problem, from there I did get to a somewhat normal looking desktop. I didn't to do anything then, foolishly thinking I could do it again in the future (for some presumably unrelated reason I could not get online = no updates and no Internet help) I haven't gotten back there since.

Slackware :: Take Current Windows7 (x64) Setup And Make It Into A Dual-boot Setup With Slackware 13.0?

Jan 24, 2010

I'm trying to take my current windows7 (x64) setup and make it into a dual-boot setup with slackware 13.0 (x32) and am hitting a brickwall. I guess I would like to know if I can salvage the situation without formating my windows drive. I fully intend to, but I had hoped to not do it this month. I'd like to get dual boot going so I can master it and acquire all the files/drivers I'll want and then format and do it 100% right next time.

Currently I have windows setup on a 3x 500gb Raid0 onboard array which itself has been flawless. After I shrunk my current partition size to give me about 25gb of free space I proceeded to setup Linux, and I was unable to perform the cfdisk portion for partitioning the array for Linux.

I tried using cfdisk:
/dev/hdx (a1-a3,b1-b3)
/dev/sdx (a1-a3,b1-b3)

I even attempted to locate with: cat proc/partition and tried using cfdisk on every device it located. It always said it was either an unknown partition table and should I start at zero, or bad partition. I was of course too concerned over my windows setup (which has almost 1tb of stuff I have not backed up) to go any further into the unknown.

PS: I have used Slackware before, back at 8.1, 10, and even a very brief interlude at 12.0, this is my first attempt on this computer however with 13.0, it is currently running fine on my laptop and my PS3 (Laptop is even dual booting 7/Slack13. Albeit without raid)
