General :: Can't Do Network Setup For Opensuse?
Jul 10, 2010
I just installed Opensuse 11.2 today and I'm eager to start downloading and customizing, but I can't set up a network. I originally installed it with the GNOME desktop, and when I opened firefox i could only connect to [URL]... and [URL], other websites timed out, even if i got to them via search results or URL.
Now, I reinstalled using the KDE desktop because after a little thought I preferred it, but now I can't even connect to these search engines at all. I don't know how to configure the network! It's through the onboard ethernet port, ethernet cable direct to modem.

Im trying to setup multiple domU through the default bridge setup. I am able to access only one of them through the network at a time. If you ping one of the domU it works perfectly but you cannot ping any of the others until you stop pinging the one and even then it takes a bit before you can. Ive looked around for a while and seen similar problems but nothing ever seems quite the same. Im probably missing something really stupid. Or is this the way the bridge is supposed to behave? Do i need to use a routed virtual network?

I am trying for the last many days to setup my opensuse 10.3 as Samba PDC Server according to the URL mentioned below, but in vain:How to setup SUSE 10.3 as Samba PDC - openSUSE When ever I try to join a Windows XP machine to the domain setup on Opensuse, I get the error:'The following error occured while attempting to join the domain. The network path was not found'. What could be the reason for this error despite of the fact the I am able to ping the FQDN of the PDC from the XP machine, but the XP machine simply denies to join the domain because of the above mentioned error.

I have an opensuse 11.3 install which I want to set up as a network boot server to install Solaris 10 on a Sun Ultra 10 client. According to what I've read, this requires rarpd and tftpd which I've set up on opensuse, but also bootparamd which I can't find for 11.3. It seems it was last included with opensuse 9.2. Does anyone know if it's available, if I could use the suse 9.2 version, or any alternative?

while trying to set up Xen Virtual Nodes we encountered one issue with the network (which is why it is posted here On the DomU the interface is provided by a bonding -bond0- of three NICS. Now the Xen network script a) does not take this bonding b) destroyes even this bonding From a number of posts I assume I have to configure this by hand, correct? Is there an instruction how to do this? Simply create a bridge on top of bond0??

I'd like to have a set up where my Ethernet card has a static IP set up but my WiFi card doesn't.Currently I have a profile for this set up in Network Manager, however on boot up and every time I replug the cable Network Manager chooses the default "auto eth1" profile. I manually have tochoose my own profile for the Ethernet card every time. How can I make it default??I know the workaround would be to use ifup but then I lose the ability to quickly change access points for my WiFi card so that's not a solution for me

I've just installed openSUSE 11.2, one problem is suse didn't find an internet connection when suse performed the ..."automatic system configuration. This routine attempts to configure your network and Internet access and sets up your hardware"... Where can I manually configure the network. I'm in the network folder now no luck. I've been using every documentation I could find Novell Documentation and DVD installation/11.2 - openSUSE Network Status: Unknown network status

I am unable to do my network setup. I have a lan connection. I used to easily setup it in windows xp in network connections > internet protocol > properties. But I do not understand anything in linux. I have installed latest version of open suse 11.1 and KDE environment. Secondly I am unable to play mp3 files on it and I do not hear any sound at startup too. I *945* motherboard with a inbuilt realtek lancard and it is working fine on windows.

I have tried all kinds of DNS services. Like opendns, Google DNS, 4.2.2.x, Scrubit, DNS Advantage. In my experience none of them are consistent enough & there is a fluctuation in their performance.A guy told me to try enabling DNS cashing on my openSUSE box.I don't know much about DNS caching. So, I want to know
(a) Will enabling DNS caching improve my Internet experience ?
(b) Is DNS caching enabled by default in openSUSE 11.4 / How to find out ?
(c) If not enabled by default, how do I enable it ?

I have several Windoz machines in a peer-to-peer network and now two SUSE machines, one 11.1 and another 11.2.I have a network printer accessible now to all the machines. My next step is to be able to share files between all the machines and several network drives. I know how to set this up between the Windoz machines, but the only way I can get the SUSE machines to see the network (and be seen) is to shut down their firewalls, and I don't think that's how you are supposed to do it?Can someone point me to what it is that I need to read, or is there a FAQ somewhere to help get me started?
I think that this has something to do with Samba and I installed Samba (client or server? I forget) on the 11.1 and 11.2 seems to have it already built-in, but I don't know how to set it up with the firewalls on the two Linux machines so that it is all seamless (as if anything can be seamless).

My Samba setup works just fine however whenever I do stop/start/restart. I get these errors in the logs:
Jan 17 00:21:14 neutrino smbd[4297]: smbd_open_once_socket: open_socket_in: Address already in use
Jan 17 00:31:20 neutrino smbd[4557]: [2010/01/17 00:31:20, 0] smbd/service.c:1009(make_connection_snum)
Does anyone know what to think of these? My thought is since it works just ignore and probably the SuSE team will get to cleaning this up sometime.

Just loaded Open SUSE EDU L I F E 11.2.2 on a Server and like what I see. The install went well and everything came up fine. I like the look and feel of this distro. The GUI features are impressive. Internet connects via eth1 . Sound, CD/DVD works and plays ok/ , grapics all working. I have two NIC cards installed.I am preparing (learning , testing, exploring) with a number of Servers that I want to take to schools in Africa. One of the key components that I need to get up and working is the LTSP. I was delighted to see that this version includes EASY-LTSP with a KIWI component. [SUSE KIWI-LTSP] So I printed out the LTSP/Quick start/Easy-LTSP (Guide) and tried to set up LTSP on my server.I went to KIWI/Prebuild in the Easy-LTSP presentation page.A box popped up with this info:
Prebuild Images:
IP 10.0.0.254

I am experimenting with Xen with the standard kernel (kernel-xen package) and utilities. I already got bridged setup to work with a single domU, but found out that because of my wireless card I cannot expect bridging to work when connected wirelessly. Now I am trying a NAT setup but I cannot seem to get any network connection from the domU to the dom0 and viceversa. Comparing the network devices and routing tables of others, I cannot see any problem.
The domU runs with IP 10.0.0.1 and the dom0 has a vif with IP 10.0.0.128 with a default gateway of 10.0.0.254. Pinging from the domU to the dom0 and viceversa does not show any traffic at all when I use tcpdump to monitor eth0 in the domU or the vif interface in dom0. It seems that basic connectivity of the vif interface and eth0 in the domU does not work. Any tips on how to debug this problem?

I'm trying to get OpenMPI (a parallel programming library) working on my home system. I have just two machines on it now, t61 and quad, connected through a router. (Which is also connected to cable modem for internet.) I can ssh between the machnes, mount directories with NFS, etc. However, I just can't get the OpenMPI to run. The OpenMPI message board suggested that the most probable cause is that the firewall is blocking TCP. I don't know how to tell if that's the problem, and can't find any manual for the SuSE firewall, while the various Wikis &c that pop up in a search don't provide any information that addresses my problem.

Newbie Question: How do I setup networking on openSuSE 11.4 on an HP Proliant DL385 G7 with 4 NICs to host Windows 2008 R2 on Xen? I've installed openSuSE 11.4 with all the patches (and most of the server patterns - Mail and News, LAMP, LDAP, Samba, etc.), and I've installed Windows 2008 R2 in a Xen virtual machine. I'm having problems configuring the 4 NICs eth0, eth1, eth2, eth3 are "bound" without an ip_address as br0
eth0 connects to my ISP - currently through a private LAN - It connects directly to the router with static IP 192.168.0.105 Eventually, one of the other NICs will serve ip_addresses via DHCP to a separate LAN (for use in an office setting), and eth0 will be set with a static IP from the ISP That means, eth0 will be static to the ISP, and the other NICs will attach to a switch serving private ip_addresses in the 192.168.0.xxx range.
Currently, I have br0 unconfigured and eth0 static. I have configured eth0 in the External Zone and br0 in the Internal Zone in the firewall, and all the correct ports are opened (afaik) I have enabled masquerading. Hostname, Domain (workgroup), DNS Server addresses and IPv4 Gateway are configured.
Windows 2008 R2 (Guest VM in Xen) "sees" the other machines on the network, and "browses" the internet, although it will not download patches except intermittently. I have not tried connecting to it from the LAN Eventually, I wish to run Windows Terminal Server. openSuSE cannot "browse" the internet, though it initially did. What am I missing? I "think" I need routing or NAT, or I may have my bridge setup incorrectly, although I've tried almost every combination. Google says Xen should be setup with either NAT or a Bridged Network.
Output of ifconfig:
br0 Link encap:Ethernet HWaddr 3C:4A:92:76:B8:F2
inet6 addr: fe80::3e4a:92ff:fe76:b8f2/64 Scope:Link

I tried to have him ping my ip and that wouldn't even work. I'm confused and wondering why it doesn't work. We share a lot of files and this would make both of our lives much easier.

The support unit here at uni doesn't support linux. Only Windows and Mac OS. And I can't quite figure how to get the printing to work. For windows I have to go to:
Code:
\print.plan.aau.dk I think its a samba print server. From here (on windows) I can choose which printer to use. There is an accounting system, so I need to log on with username and password. Is there a way to set this up easily in OpenSUSE 11.2 64bit KDE4?

Is there a good way to set up internet tracking on an openSUSE 11.3 computer? I don't want users visiting porn sites or any other nonsense, and if they do, I want to know about it. Is there a good program that the administrator can set up to report this kind of thing or at least track it? Obviously, this would need to track all websites visited regardless of the application/browser used, and would need to be completely inaccessible to users. I don't want them having the ability to turn it off or circumvent it somehow.
